Mike Colter Reunites With Robert & Michelle King On Legal Drama ‘Cupertino’ In Works At CBS
Image
Like other prolific showrunners, Robert and Michelle King are starting to build a King-verse, bringing actors from one series to another as new characters.

Following the end of the Kings’ supernatural drama Evil, one of its leads, Mike Colter — who also recurred on the duo’s The Good Wife and offshoot The Good Fight — is set to star in Kings’ latest project, Cupertino, pending a series order by CBS.

The legal drama, which was originally set up at CBS for development last summer, took a major step forward in May when, after the Kings’ pilot script had been well received, the network commissioned a full writers room to produce 12 more scripts. The room will open this fall after Robert King is done directing an episode of the duo’s CBS crime drama series Elsbeth, which returns for a third season.

Bringing Colter on board gives another boost to Cupertino — described...

Seth Rogen on the verge of making Emmys history with 4 wins for ‘The Studio’
Image
Seth Rogen is the odds-on favorite to win so many Emmys for The Studio, he'll need to bring a mantelpiece as his plus-one.

According to Gold Derby's predictions for the 2025 Emmys, Rogen is out front to win Best Comedy Series (for which he's a producer), Best Comedy Actor, and Best Comedy Directing (for "The Oner"). Plus, he's the runner-up in Best Comedy Writing (for "The Promotion"), behind only the Hacks showrunning trio of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky (for "A Slippery Slope").

Should Rogen win all four, he'd be the only person in Emmy history to win those specific trophies in the same year. In 2020, Daniel Levy won three of the four for Schitt's Creek, but his acting award was for supporting, not lead. Here's what Rogen tells Gold Derby about potentially making history:

When Ryan Gosling Bombed An Audition For This Popular 2000s TV Show: “It Wasn’t The Right Fit”
Image
Which Popular 2000s TV Show Did Ryan Gosling Audition For?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Today, Ryan Gosling is a two-time Oscar nominee and a certified heartthrob thanks to La La Land and Barbie. But a few decades back, he was just another young actor hustling through TV auditions in hopes of a big break.

It turns out that not all of his tryouts were home runs. In fact, one casting experience left him out in the cold. Long before he won over the world with The Notebook, Gosling failed to impress the team behind Gilmore Girls. Yes, that cozy Stars Hollow show turned him down, and the story behind it is as awkward as it is surprising.

Ryan Gosling’s Gilmore Girls Audition ‘Fell Short’

In the early 2000s, Ryan Gosling was already gaining prominence in casting rooms. Not quite a household name, but someone to keep an eye on. Casting...

‘Étoile’ vs. ‘The Residence’: How to cancel a show without derailing its Emmy chances
Image
Talk about an Emmy buzzkill.

When Prime Video officially pulled the plug on Étoile on June 6, the announcement sent ripples through the entertainment industry. While the cancellation of a freshman series is hardly uncommon, it was the timing of the news, not the decision itself, that may have ended the show’s Emmy aspirations.

Just one week before Emmy voting began, Étoile was poised for awards consideration. The ballet dramedy marked the return of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. The Palladinos are no strangers to Emmy gold, with 10 wins and 24 nominations between them. While Étoile hadn’t toped the streamers charts, it was quietly building momentum and Amazon originally committed to two seasons. FYC events were scheduled, and cast appearances had been lined up. The campaign machine appeared to be just getting into full swing.

Then came the surprising announcement, right in the middle of FYC season, and any momentum...

‘Gilmore Girls’ Heads To Hallmark Channel
Image
Cult classic Gilmore Girls is coming to the Hallmark Channel.

Beginning August 25, the series will air all seven seasons in sequential order, starting with the pilot. It will air on weekdays from 2-6 pm and on weekends from 8-10 am, in addition to special occasion marathons, as part of the linear-only partnership.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, Gilmore Girls starred Lauren Graham as Loralei Gilmore, a single mom, and Alexis Bledel as her academically-minded teenage daughter Loralei “Rory” Gilmore. It premiered October 5, 2000 and became a flagship series for The WB network. The seventh and final season aired on The CW, ending on May 15, 2007.

The show follows the duo, both navigating coming-of-age in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, while mom operates the Dragonfly Inn and daughter gets into private school with dreams of attending an Ivy League university. The series also features now-household names including Melissa McCarthy, Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia among many others.

Emmy Noms Breakdown: ‘The Studio’ Claims Frontrunner Status; ‘The Pitt’ and ‘Adolescence’ Gear Up for Drama and Limited Series Showdowns
Image
The excitement of Emmy nomination morning fades quickly for studios and networks, because the more daunting question is always the same: How do we actually win?

It’s tempting to judge frontrunners based on sheer nomination tallies. If we followed that logic, drama series “Severance” with 27 nods, satirical comedy “The Studio” with a record-breaking 23, and the villainous limited series “The Penguin” with 24 would seem like the ones to beat. But this is the Emmys — nothing is ever that simple.

Looking at the drama categories, the race looks to shape up with Apple TV+’s “Severance” versus HBO Max’s critically acclaimed freshman entry “The Pitt,” which earned a solid 13 nominations.

On Emmy night, winning is rarely about just one factor. It’s about crafting the “winning package,” and both “Severance” and “The Pitt” performed exceptionally well with the Television Academy’s four largest branches: Executives, Actors, Writers, and Editors.

Emmys Nominations Snubs: ‘Squid Game’ Shut Out, ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Only Lands One Nod — Uzo Aduba Surprises
Image
The 2025 Emmy Awards failed to recognize a number of longtime favorites with nominations, with past winners Squid Game, Elisabeth Moss, Jon Hamm, Ted Danson and past nominees Yellowjackets and Selena Gomez not nominated this year.

Squid Game, which won six Emmys including the top prize of best drama actor for Lee Jung-jae for its first season in 2022, saw its second season completely absent from this year’s nominations. The hit Netflix series’ third and final season will be eligible for next year’s awards.

Similarly, The Handmaid’s Tale was once so adored by Emmy voters that it received multiple nominations in 2019 solely off of hanging episodes. The adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel of the same name, which won best drama series for its first season in 2017, only scored one nomination for Cherry Jones’ guest role, leaving out the rest of its acclaimed cast, including star Moss, who also...

Emmys: ‘Andor’ & ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Final Seasons Score, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Exits Quietly; Canceled ‘Residence’ & ‘Étoile’ Get Noms
Image
Several recently departed series are getting a nice Emmy sendoff with nominations for their final seasons. The list includes two shows designed for a short run, Disney+’s Andor and Netflix’s Arcane, as well as FX veteran What We Do In the Shadows and HBO’s Somebody Somewhere.

Andor picked up 14 nominations for its second and final season, including Outstanding Drama Series as well as Writing and Directing For a Drama Series. That that exceeds the Season 1 haul for the Star Wars offshoot, which included eight nominations, including again Outstanding Drama Series, Writing and Directing For A Drama Series.

Arcane, set in Riot’s League of Legends universe, also ended its run after two seasons. Its Season 2 nominations tally, two, is down from five noms for Season 1 but that includes another Outstanding Animated Program nomination. The series already won the top animated category in 2022, the first streaming show to do so.

'The Studio' Kicks 'Ted Lasso' to the Curb To Set a New Emmys Record
Image
A fictional studio head just made very real history as The Studio, Apple TV+’s hit satirical comedy about the absurdities of Hollywood, has officially broken the record for most Emmy nominations ever for a comedy series in its first season. With 23 nods announced on Tuesday morning, the show has leapfrogged past Ted Lasso — another Apple TV+ darling — which previously held the record with 20 nominations back in 2021.

Created by Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, Frida Perez, andSeth Rogen, The Studio centers on Matt Remick (played by Rogen), a chaotic new studio chief trying to navigate the collapse of the old studio system while chasing awards gold, cultural relevance, and the ever-elusive Zoë Kravitz shout-out. The series has been a streaming and critical juggernaut since its debut, earning rave reviews for its bold stylistic swings and biting insider satire — and now it’s got the Emmy numbers to back it up.

‘The Studio’ Breaks ‘Ted Lasso’ Emmy Record for Most Nominations for a Freshman Comedy Series, Ties ‘The Bear’ for Most in History
Image
A fictional studio head has broken the Emmy record.

Apple TV+ continues its awards season dominance as its freshman comedy series “The Studio” shattered records Tuesday, receiving 23 Emmy nominations — the most ever for a comedy series in its first season. It also tied the record set by “The Bear” last year, as the most nominated comedy series ever.

The previous record was set in 2021 by “Ted Lasso,” another Apple TV+ production, which scored 20 nominations during its debut year. That series went on to win seven Emmys, including three for acting and outstanding comedy series.

Created by Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, Frida Perez and Seth Rogen — who also directed, wrote and star in the series — “The Studio” follows an embattled Hollywood studio head struggling to balance corporate demands with his passion for producing quality films. The ensemble cast also includes Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders and Kathryn Hahn.

Étoile Cast Shares Disappointment About Ballet Dramedy’s Cancellation, Wants to ‘Celebrate the Fact That It Existed’

Cast members from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Étoile are sharing their complicated feelings over the classical ballet’s Prime Video cancellation, a show that was axed despite being given a two-season order.

‘Étoile’ Cast Unpack Feelings About Prime Video Cancellation: “I Thought About Starting A GoFundMe!”
Image
Prime Video’s decision in early June to ditch Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s classical ballet themed dramady Étoile after just one season sent shockwaves through the high-end drama community.

Cast members Yanic Truesdale, Taïs Vinolo and Ivan du Pontavice put on a brave face as they touched down at the Scad Lacoste Film Festival in France’s Provence region this past week for a screening and Q&a, which was arranged prior to news of the non-renewal.

“Of course it’s a bummer, but at the same time, we’re here to celebrate the fact that it existed,” said Franco-Anglo actor Pontavice.

He plays hot-headed French dancer Gabin Roux in the drama about two world-renowned New York and Paris ballet companies that decide to collaborate and share dancers to save their financially-struggling institutions.

“We’re just celebrating the experience. We like to tell tales about how it happened,...

Why Prime Video Canceled Étoile After Committing To A Second Season
Image
Television's streaming era has shown a preference for established creators over new voices at almost every turn, and as the landscape continues to buffer the future, even fan-favorites are encountering bumps in the road. People in charge of these large studios and corporations trust an established name a lot more than a new hand, with few exceptions, and that can make the pool of shows and movies available feel a bit smaller than it did in the past. Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino were bound to get another chance to work with Prime Video after the success of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and that chance came with "Étoile" on the popular streamer, until the company chose to end things after just one season.

Prime Video actually gave "Étoile" a two-season order, in a wild turn of events, things are indeed done after just one eight-episode block, and that choice reveals...

From ‘Andor’ and ‘The Studio’ to Selena Gomez and Pedro Pascal, 14 Possible Emmy Records and Milestones in Sight
Image
As the 2025 Primetime Emmy nominations voting nears its end, some of this year’s contenders are poised to make history in a variety of ways. With groundbreaking representation, unprecedented season hauls, and potential new records, here are 14 significant milestones that could be achieved when the nominations are announced, possibly paving the way for historic wins.

“The Studio” Eyes First-Season Emmy Record

In 2021, “Ted Lasso” set the bar with 20 nominations for its debut season — the highest ever for a comedy in its first year. Now, another Apple series, “The Studio,” could challenge that record. Variety predicts the show is hovering around 19 nominations, but insiders say it could surpass “Ted Lasso” if additional technical or acting nods come through.

Seth Rogen Could Tie Record for Most Individual Wins in One Night

Speaking of “The Studio,” Seth Rogen has four submissions tied to the Apple romp — comedy series, lead actor, writing and directing.

Rtp Boards Lorena Iglesias’ ‘Millennial Mal,’ From Tornasol Media, Ukbar Filmes, Filmin (Exclusive)
Image
Looking ever more to Spain, a natural partner, Portuguese public broadcaster Rtp has boarded “Millennial Mal,” a series created by actor, screenwriter and stand-up comic Lorena Iglesias who co-directs with Andrea Jaurrieta, who made a splash with her second feature, “Nina.”

The series is produced by Oscar winner Tornasol Media (“The Secret in Their Eyes”), Ukbar Filmes, behind Netflix smash hit “Turn of the Tide,” and Spanish SVOD platform Filmin which also has Spain’s first TV window. Rtp now serves as the show’s anchor broadcaster in Portugal.

Written by Iglesias, “Millennial Mal” turns on Judith, 42, an out-of-work debt-drowning librarian, who receives a university grant in a bureaucratic error. To access it, however, she has to attend the university and pass herself off as under 30. Aided by two younger women, has a Gen Z makeover. Trouble is, she ends up believing her facade.

‘Etoile’ Star Gideon Glick Talks His Biggest Challenge With the Famous Rapid-Fire Palladino Dialogue
Image
Gideon Glick is an Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino veteran, having worked with them on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, on which he had a recurring role as a peculiar magician. Therefore, he knew what to expect when it came to the rapid-fire, cadenced dialogue that the Palladinos are known for. But their new show, Étoile — set in the world of ballet, spanning across New York and Paris with its dialogue half in French, half in English — brought its own set of challenges to the theater actor, whose Broadway work includes Spring Awakening and To Kill a Mockingbird, which garnered him a Tony nomination in 2019.

“The text is always challenging because it’s meaty,” says Glick, who also starred in the TV shows Devious Maids and American Horror Story: NYC. “The experience of living in another country — granted, it was Paris — was [an added challenge] because I’m pretty deaf. I can’t hear in my right ear,...

5 Songs With ‘Étoile’ Music Supervisor Robin Urdang
Image
Music supervisor is a job that is part professional music nerd, part aural detective and part crate-digging business affairs exec. 5 Songs is a Deadline series that highlights the work of these below-the-line workers through songs and stories.

What do Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Joan Jett, BTS, Rob Zombie and Tchaikovsky have in common? Their songs were all used in Amazon ballet drama Étoile.

Étoile came from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino and followed the the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies in New York and Paris as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.

It starred Luke Kirby, Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, Charlotte Gainsbourg, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Lamay Zhang and Simon Callow.

‘Étoile’ Bosses Get Real About the Challenges of Bringing the Global Ballet Series to Life
Image
“Étoile” is not the first television show Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have made about the ballet world. That distinction belongs to “Bunheads,” the ABC Family dramedy that aired for one season more than a dozen years ago. Since “Bunheads” was a coming-of-age story about four aspiring ballerinas growing up in a small coastal town, the married, 10-time Emmy-winning creators consider “Étoile” their first true workplace comedy.

The Prime Video series, the pair’s first TV project since “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and was canceled June 6 after one season (after we spoke to them), follows two renowned ballet companies — one in Manhattan, the other in Paris — whose respective artistic directors, Jack McMillan (Luke Kirby) and Geneviève Lavigne (Charlotte Gainsbourg), agree to swap their best talent in a last-ditch effort to save their struggling institutions.

“Setting a workplace comedy in the world of ballet, you see the behind the scenes, you...

Fans Launch #SaveÉtoile Campaign After Shocking Cancellation of 'Gilmore Girls' Creator's Second Ballet Series
Image
It’s been just under a week since Prime Video announced it was not moving forward with another season of Étoile, but fans of the show are not content to stand by on the sidelines while it perishes. A fan campaign dubbed #SaveÉtoile was put together shortly after the series was canned at Amazon, and it has garnered over 600 signatures in the last few days, as well as daily social actions like fan art, comment storms, and letters to Amazon. Étoile originally received a two-season order, which made its cancellation sting all the more. The show also developed a strong fan base upon the release of all Season 1 episodes at once on April 24, partially due to its glowing LGBTQ+ representation and love stories.

This isn’t the first time that Prime Video has delivered a gutting blow to fans who have taken it upon themselves to push back. Just in the last month,...

Campaigning while canceled: ‘Étoile’ could follow these other deep-sixed shows to Emmy glory
Image
It was a classic late-Friday news dump: Amazon confirmed that Étoile, the splashy ballet-themed Prime Video dramedy from the Emmy-winning team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) had been canceled after one season. The timing was curious: the news broke on June 6, just one week before Emmy voting was set to begin.

Although Étoile has been canceled, the campaign continues. There are billboards and trade ads touting the positive reviews and making a play for votes. Given the publicity surrounding Étoile and the Palladinos' track record (they have 10 Emmys in 24 bids between them), there's a chance that when nominations come out on July 15, Étoile could make the cut. And if it did, it wouldn't be an outlier.

Four years ago, in July 2021, Lovecraft Country received a whopping 18 Emmy nominations for its first and only season, leaving many stunned that a canceled show nabbed the fifth most...

‘Étoile’ Co-Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino on How the Ballet Series Captures the ‘Universal Struggle of Trying to Figure Out Where You Fit’
Image
“Étoile” co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says her Prime Video ballet series taps into the struggle for art, declaring that art is “everything. Art is expression. Art is joy, and it’s part of the human experience.”

When it comes to “Étoile,” which immerses viewers in the ballet world, “the relatability of this is not just about art. It’s about just a dream and disappointment in life and wanting to be something that maybe you’re never going to be or maybe you are going to get there. And that sort of universal struggle of trying to figure out where you fit into the grand scheme of anything,” Sherman-Palladino said at a Q&a moderated by Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford.

She continued that everyone shares the same questions: “Do I matter? Does what I think matter? Does what I care about matter? It does matter. It matters so much. And...

Amazon canceled Étoile despite season 2 renewal (and this is very frustrating)
Image
When you're a fan of television shows, you become accustomed to the unfortunate downside of the business. Shows you love will inevitably be canceled before their time, sometimes on a cliffhanger, and the decisions made by networks and streamers will leave you puzzled. Well, the most recent decision Amazon made regarding the new drama series Étoile will have you scratching your head.

Étoile canceled after one season of double order

From Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, ballet drama series Étoile premiered on Prime Video on April 24, 2025. Amazon had ordered the drama straight to series with a two-season commitment. Following the first season's release, Amazon has decided to walk back on that two-season order and cancel Étoile after only one season.

Sadly, it's not the first time something like this has happened and it won't be the last. Things change on a dime in the television industry.

‘Étoile’: Exclusive 4-part conversation with creators, star Luke Kirby, cinematographer, and choreographer
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino wear many hats (literally) on the sets of their TV shows — creators, writers, directors, executive producers. So over the course of their career, from Gilmore Girls to Étoile, they've built a family of trusted professionals around them to help them realize their creative vision, in front of and behind the camera.

In Gold Derby's exclusive four-part "Dream Team" conversation series, they open up about how they all work together. It all starts, of course, with their own partnership. Sherman-Palladino and Palladino, who've been married for years, say they've figured out how to divide and conquer the tremendous amount of responsibility that comes with showrunning. "It's pretty organic," says Sherman-Palladino. "Frankly, when you've been doing it this long, what you want is to be jealous of something that someone else has done. ... It keeps you on your toes."

When it comes to casting, the Palladinos are...

Prime Video Decides If 'Gilmore Girls' Creator's New Drama Series Will Keep Dancing
Image
Original shows have a hard time of making it work in the modern world, and we lost one of the better ones. Prime Video's Étoile was cancelled after just one season. Deadline reported that the Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino series was cancelled despite having a two-season order. According to the report, it was due to the show's performance vs. cost report and not a change of who is in charge of Amazon MGM Studios. Jennifer Salke had been the one to give the series a two-season order, and she left her position in March.

The cancellation is devastating for fans of the series. The Season 1 finale left fans with an open-ended question about Jack (Luke Kirby) and Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge) that was, seemingly, going to be answered in the next season. But it was reported that part of the reason for the show's cancellation came down to how...

Gilmore Girls Creators’ New Show Canceled By Prime Video Despite Two-Season Order
Image
Prime Video has been in the news recently for some high-profile cancellations. The Wheel of Time, a sprawling fantasy epic, was recently axed. The big-budget adaptation of the Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson novels saw a decline in viewership for its most recent third installment. Despite the fact that the drama series is reportedly well-liked by executives, with a strong global audience, that wasn't enough to pave the way for The Wheel of Time season 4.

It speaks to the fact that Prime Video, outside of action shows like Reacher and superpowered stories like The Boys and Invincible, is struggling with some of the quieter genres that make up a more balanced television portfolio. That is exemplified in the streamer's latest cancellation, which comes as something of a surprise.

Prime Video just canceled its ballet drama series Étoile after its first season, despite giving it a two-season order when it was first greenlit. The cancellation of Étoile comes as a major shock to the fans, as the ballet drama series ended on a cliffhanger, and now they have no way to see the resolution.

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, the Prime Video series revolves around Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, the artistic directors of two world-renowned ballet companies, one in New York and one in Paris. In a desperate attempt to save their companies, they decide to exchange their most talented dancers.

Étoile stars Luke Kirby and Lou de Laâge in the lead roles with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, David Haig, Lamay Zhang, and Simon Callow.

'Gilmore Girls' Creator's Ballet Dance Drama 'Étoile' Canceled by Prime Video After 1 Season
Image
It looks like Amazon are taking stock right now and bringing down the curtain on several of their shows that are not paying their way. Following the shocking announcement that The Wheel of Time would not be renewed for a fourth season, Prime Video has now dropped dance drama Étoile after a single season despite a two-season order being in place.

According to Deadline, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet dramedy series has struck its end pose much earlier than expected, and will not be returning for a new season as originally planned. Having been given an order for two seasons, this would have come as a surprise to many, including the show’s creators, who were also behind the hit series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Just like The Wheel of Time, it seems that money is at the heart of the cancellation, with the performance vs. cost result...

Why Did Prime Video Cancel ‘Étoile’? Ballet Series Scrapped Despite 2-Season Order
Image
Well, blink and you miss it. Étoile, that elegant dance of drama and pliés, twirled onto Prime Video only to tiptoe off-stage roughly six weeks later. And let us tell you, it’s not every day you watch a streaming service ghost its own two-season promise like a bad date. We watched it, we admired its sinewy ambition, and now we’re sitting here with the dramatic whiplash of a dropped arabesque.

Despite a global storyline, highbrow ballet politics, Charlotte Gainsbourg’s icy brilliance, Luke Kirby’s tortured charm, and the holy grail of Rotten Tomatoes approval, Étoile still got the guillotine. So, why was the show canceled after only one season, despite an earlier two-season promise?

We’ve taken a pointed look (pun intended) at every toe-cramping reason!

Real Reason ‘Étoile’ on Prime Video Will Not Return for Season 2: Explained
Image
Once upon a time in the land of prestige TV, dance dramas pirouetted into the spotlight. And now, with all that twirling nostalgia, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino decided to return to their roots with Étoile—a show that felt like the elegant, grown-up sibling of their short-lived cult favorite Bunheads.

Bursting with drama, sparkle, and signature chaos, Étoile twirled its way onto Prime Video, brought to life by the creative minds behind Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And just when the show found its groove, the music stopped. Yep, Étoile won’t be returning for an encore. It’s been canceled after just one season, leaving fans mid-spin, wondering why something with so much potential was cut short.

Prime Video Ends Étoile After One Season Despite Two-Season Commitment
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Luke Kirby, and Lou de Laâge in Étoile (2025)
Amazon’s Prime Video has halted further production on ballet drama “Étoile,” shutting down the project after its first eight-episode season. The decision comes even after the show secured a rare two-season straight-to-series commitment when it was ordered in 2023.

Created by “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” duo Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the series launched on 24 April with a full-season drop, filming on location in Paris and New York at a reported high cost. Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg led an international ensemble that included Lou de Laâge and Gideon Glick.

Viewer data proved underwhelming. TheWrap notes that “Étoile” never appeared in Nielsen’s streaming top ten and quickly surrendered Prime Video’s internal chart to action hit “Reacher,” challenging the business case for a second run given the expense of dual-city shoots and a company of world-class dancers.

Internal shifts also played a part. The order was issued under former Amazon...

'Étoile' Canceled After 1 Season Despite Prime Video Previously Ordering 2 Seasons
Image
Etoile has been canceled after one season despite an initial two-season order.

The comedy-drama series will not be renewed for a second season, even though it was originally picked up for two seasons by Prime Video back in 2023. While multi-season orders usually have multi-season runs, this is not always the case, as each season needs to be evaluated and approved. The show will not return for a second season due to performance and cost reasons, according to Deadline.

Keep reading to find out more…

Etoile tells the story of “dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.” It was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the creators of Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The eight-episode first season of Etoile was released on Prime Video on April 24.

‘Étoile’ Canceled After Just One Season Despite 2-Season Order at Prime Video
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Luke Kirby, and Lou de Laâge in Étoile (2025)
The curtain is down for “Étoile” at Prime Video. Despite receiving a two-season order when first greenlit, the Amazon ballet drama from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino was canceled at the Amazon streamer.

The series, which had originally received a two-year commitment from Amazon but pending an official green light for Season 2, ended on a cliffhanger.

The show was originally ordered when Jennifer Salke was in charge of Amazon MGM, and the change in management — Salke left that job in late March and MGM Amazon is now run by Prime Video boss Mike Hopkins — may have played a role.

But the show also struggled to find an audience on Prime Video. It debuted April 24 with all 8 episodes premiering, a now-rare release strategy for Amazon, as most Prime Video shows stream weekly.

When “Étoile” debuted it didn’t make Nielsen’s streaming top 10, and despite hitting the top spot on Prime...

Prime Video Cancels New Series With 85% Rt Score Despite 2-Season Order
Image
It's going to be a one-season run for Étoile on Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios is shelving the series after its first season, despite putting in an initial order for two seasons at the start.

Per Deadline, Étoile has been canceled. The show will continue to receive support for its Emmy campaign in the comedy categories, so there's still a chance it will get some award recognition, even if it isn't getting a second season. The series was initially given a two-season order in 2023, making Étoile a rare case of a series not to move forward with another season after initially having an order put in for multiple.

Étoile was the follow-up show to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from the team of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. While there were high hopes in the future of the show, it would seem that the resulting viewership isn't reaching levels that are...

‘Étoile’ Canceled After One Season at Amazon Prime Video, Despite Two-Season Order
Image
The first bow of “Étoile” is also its last. Prime Video has canceled the ballet series from “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, despite the streamer initially greenlighting the production with a two-season commitment.

The final pirouette comes roughly six weeks after the series first debuted in late April and earned generally positive notices from critics. All eight episodes were dropped simultaneously on Prime Video. That binge-release model of premiering all episodes at once has become a bit of a rarity for Amazon’s original programming.

“Étoile,” which starred Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as ballet company directors teaming to save each other’s storied institutions, was ordered to series in 2023, about one month before the series finale of Sherman-Palladino and Palladino’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” premiered on Amazon’s streamer. “Maisel” was also initially picked up for two seasons back in 2017, though that commitment came after a pilot was produced.

‘Etoile’ Canceled at Amazon After One Season — Despite Two-Season Order
Image
Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled Étoile after a single season — even though the streamer had initially asked for two.

The news comes about six weeks after the series, from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, premiered its full eight-episode season. Étoile is set in the world of ballet and centers on the heads of historic but struggling companies in New York and Paris (played by Maisel alum Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg) who decide to swap their principal dancers.

Prime Video gave the show a two-season, straight-to-series order in 2023 as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was in its final season. Such deals often have contingencies, however, by which a streamer or network can opt out after part of a multi-season order. That was the case with Étoile.

In the three weeks of Étoile’s release for which data is available, the show has not dented Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts.

Étoile is taking its final bow, a little earlier than expected.

Amazon’s Prime Video has cancelled the Amy Sherman-Palladino ballet comedy after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports, despite Amazon giving the series a two-season order initially. The decision to cancel “came down largely to performance vs. cost,” Deadline says.

‘Étoile’ Canceled By Prime Video After Season 1 Of Two-Season Order
Image
Exclusive: Adieu, Étoile. Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet drama series, Deadline has learned. The streamer and Amazon MGM Studios will continue to support the series’ Emmy campaign in the comedy categories.

In the Palladinos’ followup to their critical and commercial hit for Prime Video, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, they received a two-season initial pickup for Étoile in 2023. (Mrs. Maisel itself scored Prime Video’s first multi-year order with a two-season pickup in 2017 off a pilot. Étoile was ordered straight-to-series. )

While most multi-season orders result in multi-season runs, that is not guaranteed, and there have been exceptions. There is still an evaluation process after each season that triggers a formal green light with contingencies built in. That is something Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power goes through, getting a Season 2 and, most recently...

‘Étoile’ creators on ‘secret weapon’ choreographer Marguerite Derricks
Image
If there’s a common thread to the Palladino-verse (beyond the fast-talking), it’s dance — the actors in shows created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino glide across our screens as if performing on a stage, as do the cameras tracking them. That’s credit to choreographer Marguerite Derricks, who’s been part of the Palladino pack for years — but with Étoile, she gets to strut her stuff. “I’ve done a lot,” she says, referring to her long career, “and I finally feel like Étoile is my thing.”

Gold Derby: Marguerite, tell me your origin story. How did you first connect with Dan and Amy?

Marguerite Derricks: I first connected with Dan and Amy on the TV show Bunheads. That was our first. Étoile is our fourth show together. So we did Bunheads, which was heaven, absolute heaven. And then they wrote a bunch of dance in the Gilmore Girls reboot.

“It’s Just for the Pure Love of This Art Form”: ‘THR Frontrunners’ Panel With ‘Étoile’ Showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino
Image
Amy-Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino have dabbled in the world of ballet before — their 2012 series Bunheads focused on a ballet school and their Gilmore Girls character of Miss Patty (Liz Torres) was a dance teacher. But with Étoile, the showrunner couple wanted to explore the art form even deeper.

“I was a dancer, so I grew up in that world,” Sherman-Palladino said at a recent THR Frontrunners panel. “Most of the stuff that I’ve seen done around the ballet world, it’s usually like, ‘Oh, they’re so pretty and fluffy onstage,’ but then offstage they push each other off buildings and murder each other. I’m kidding. But there’s just so much more to it than that. They are actually a really interesting group of people, and it’s the one art form where you’re guaranteed to never make a dime. You’re going to die...

Inside the Gotham TV Awards: David E. Kelley’s inspirational call to follow creative north stars amid challenging times
Image
By the time Steven Bochco took to the Gotham Television Awards stage on Monday night to honor longtime colleague and TV writing goliath David E. Kelley at New York’s storied Cipriani Wall Street, The Gotham Film & Media Institute had already delivered several tributes to some of the industry’s biggest needle-movers: Elisabeth Moss and The Handmaid’s Tale ensemble, Dope’s Brian Tyree Henry, Étoile’s Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Squid Game’s Hwang Dong-hyuk, Parker Posey and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

But the Presumed Innocent creator’s acceptance speech and Bochco’s introduction of the Visionary Tribute recipient — a man who “makes the conflicts and values of an arcane and specialized world” not only comprehensible, but dramatic and engaging “in a country where they no longer teach civics” — would also serve as one of the clearest encapsulations of the bold, risk-taking creatives and defiant, timely, and representational...

‘Étoile’ creators say cinematographer M. David Mullen was their ‘film school’
Image
The man responsible for making Mrs. Maisel look, well, marvelous is Emmy-winning cinematographer M. David Mullen, who teams up again with collaborators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino on their latest series Étoile. Once again, he brings his brilliant, bright eye for detail to the world of ballet in both New York and Paris. (Pro tip: His Instagram posts are veritable works of art in themselves.) “It's a true collaboration of love,” says Sherman-Palladino.

Gold Derby: David, how did you first team up with Dan and Amy?

M. David Mullen: I interviewed for the pilot for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel back in the summer of 2016. And then we shot the pilot in the fall that year.

Amy Sherman-Palladino: Yeah, and it went terrible.

Mullen: Terrible, obviously. I blew it. But no one else was available. It went well, I guess. I actually interviewed with you guys the year before for...
