The Summer 2024 anime season will feature the debut of Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc, a new anime that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original Kinnikuman television adaptation. The mere fact the series has reached this milestone is a testament to the show's long-term popularity and influence. But one of the most fascinating things about the Kinnikuman franchise is that many Americans have fond memories of the series, despite not being aware of the anime, manga, or the grander franchise due to Kinnikuman's rich import history.

The Kinnikuman series was created by Yudetamago, a shared pen name of Yoshinori Nakai and Takashi Shimada. Making its debut in Shnen Jump in 1979, the original Kinnikuman series follows Suguru Kinniku. At the start of the series, Suguru is a clumsy oaf who, despite dreaming of being a superhero, has already developed a reputation as a liability as he always loses battles. But, when...

M.U.S.C.L.E. (1983)
In a recent interview with Weekly Osakanichi, co-creator of Kinnikuman manga, Takashi Shimada, opened up about the immense pressure and challenges he faced when he debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

His revelations shed light on the demanding environment within one of Japan’s most popular manga publications and the toll it took on its young creators.

Reflecting on the early days, Shimada revealed a strict policy enforced by their editor stating that taking breaks were absolutely forbidden in the magazine, as doing so would result in their immediate dismissal.

According to the mangaka, this pressure stemmed from the limited entertainment options available for children at the time, making manga a major source of enjoyment. Moreover, the rising...
