- Grandfather of Brooke Shields
- Ex-father-in-law of Teri Shields.
- Famously handsome, flamboyant amateur tennis player. Reached the 1931 Wimbledon finals, but was forced to default due to injury, the first time a player (in this case, Sidney Wood) won a singles major by default.
- Pancho González paid tribute to Shields as being one of his biggest supporters and inspirations. In something of an irony, Pancho's last wife, Rita, is the sister of Shield's grand-daughter Brooke's ex-husband, Andre Agassi.
- His second wife was the sister-in-law of Beatriz de Borbón y Battenberg.
