"Superman" features writer-director James Gunn's muse Nathan Fillion as the Justice Gang's self-appointed leader (and name decider), the hothead Green Lantern Guy Gardner. But you may have missed that the former Captain Reynolds isn't the only "Firefly" star in the movie.

Compared to previous "Superman" films, Gunn's picture features lots more of the casual sci-fi silliness of Silver Age "Superman" comics. Metropolis gets attacked by a kaiju, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) has his own pocket dimension, and Superman's (David Corenswet) Fortress of Solitude has several robot attendants.

The robots have uniform designs, but also unique voices and numbers. The lead robot is #4, but by the end of the movie, he's taken a new name: "Gary." Gary is voiced by Alan Tudyk. Since his days playing the funny starship pilot Wash on "Firefly," Tudyk has become a prolific voice actor.

We might always associate Man of Steel with Metropolis or Krypton, but it’s really Cleveland that is the home of the Man of Steel. Now, Superman is being immortalized in that hometown with a statue that stands on an 18-ft. pillar.

This past weekend, the Siegel & Schuster Society — so named after Superman co-creators Jerry and Joe — erected the statue in the men’s namesake tribute plaza. And yes, it is made of stainless steel. Long established as an allegory for the immigrant experience, especially when viewed through the personal histories of Superman’s comic book co-creators — second-generation Jewish immigrants Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn said his forthcoming film entry of Kal-El keeps in tune with the original 1938-created vision.

“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” the Superman helmer told The Times U.K. in a new profile. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

When asked how the blockbuster may be perceived in predominantly red versus blue states, especially amid prevailing anti-immigrant and refugee sentiment, Gunn responded, “Yes, it plays differently, but it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind...

“Superman,” DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind. DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn are producing the film, which Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

The film stars David Corenswet in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

And the global tour isn’t stopping either. From recent stopovers in Brazil and the Philippines, Gunn had a vision to do something unusual in the genre today: to create a story about doing good. Being good.

“The movie is about a character who is purely good in a world that isn’t good, and I think that’s something we don’t really see.

Superman has just proven to be one of pop culture’s most valuable heroes, with the cover of Action Comics #1 being auctioned off for an outstanding total of $408,000. To clarify, that amount was paid for the cover alone, not the whole issue, making this auction sale all the more notable.

Superman made his debut in Action Comics#1 (1938) by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, with fans getting their first glimpse of the Man of Steel on what is arguably the most famous comic book cover in history. The iconic image shows Superman in his original suit, lifting a green car over his head.

Drawn by Shuster himself, the scene’s dynamic action and bright colors make the cover instantly recognizable. Now, it has proven its immense worth by selling for an incredible sum of money through Heritage Auctions on June 26, 2025.

Although the classic Superman's red trunks are canon, designed by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, fans have been clamoring for James Gunn to put Superman back in them. Zack Snyder, lauded for his illustrious vision in film, decided to remove the red trunks for Henry Cavill's Man of Steel.

His reason was sound. Snyder has said that he tried “a billion different versions” but could never make the classic design work. Although the trunks were an iconic facet of Superman's suit, Snyder thought they didn't fit the tone of a Kryptonian suit designed for functionality and practicality.

The latest trailer for Superman was heavy on action, and in a couple of blink-and-you'd-miss-them scenes, Ultraman's true face is seemingly revealed.

By now, we know enough to posit that Lex Luthor creates the villain and has him pose as the Hammer of Boravia to turn Metropolis against its greatest protector. We've also been hearing chatter for months that Ultraman is a Superman clone, something potentially confirmed by his and the Hammer's ability to use Heat Vision.

With that information, the prevailing theory among fans has been that Ultraman will be a deformed version of Superman, and perhaps even an early iteration of Bizarro. However, a closer look at the unmasked villain suggests filmmaker James Gunn is heading down a much weirder route.

Starting Tuesday, June 10, Amazon Prime members across the U.S. can purchase tickets on Fandango for exclusive early screenings of DC Studios’ Superman in select theaters on July 8 at 7 p.m. local time—three days before the film’s nationwide release in theaters and IMAX on July 11.

Members can also make their ticket purchase count for a good cause through Fandango’s roundup program. While giving fans first access to one of the most anticipated films of the year, these Prime Early Screenings will allow customers to round up their movie ticket purchase to the nearest dollar and donate the balance to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

These exclusive early member screenings are part of a larger “Anyone Can Be Super” campaign developed by Amazon Ads Brand Innovation Lab, which immerses fans in Superman-inspired experiences across Amazon, allowing them to discover how their simple actions can create a meaningful impact.

In April, the Superman lawsuit filed by co-creator Joe Shuster's estate was dismissed after a U.S. court found no jurisdiction, thereby clearing the path for the Warner Bros. Discovery/DC Studios movie to be released globally amid ongoing copyright legacy battles.

However, the ongoing legal battle reared its ugly head again last month when Shuster's estate filed a new lawsuit that could have resulted in the reboot being caught up in yet another heated legal fight.

That would have seen Superman blocked from being released in countries like the UK, Ireland, Canada, and Australia. Fortunately, that same New York judge has now blocked the Shuster estate's bid to stop the movie from being released overseas.

That's good news for DC Studios and even better news for fans who want to watch Superman on the big screen next month.

Director James Gunn has been posting on his socials to promote the upcoming film. Threads, Instagram, Facebook, X – the marketing campaign is in high gear and fans have been blitzed with new posters and videos and images almost daily.

James Gunn’s Superman is all set to make a grand worldwide launch on July 11. However, the fate of the movie in four international markets hangs in the balance after Superman creator Joe Shuster’s estate seeks an injunction on the film’s release. While the estate’s January lawsuit on the matter was dismissed in April, they have filed a new lawsuit.

It could potentially stop the film from releasing in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and Australia. These countries are some of the biggest markets for Superman outside of the United States. This isn’t the first time that the estate of Superman‘s creators has entered into legal battle with Warner Bros. over copyright claims.
