‘The Goldbergs’ to End After 10 Seasons
Jeff Garlin, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, and Sean Giambrone in The Goldbergs' Excellent Adventure (2021)
“The Goldbergs” is coming to an end after 10 seasons on ABC, according to reports. The ’80s-set half-hour comedy was based on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood experiences.

With over 200 episodes and a decade-long run, the Sony Pictures Television series — which follows the title family in a Pennsylvania town — has earned the distinction of being the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air. The season finale, set to air May 3, will now serve as a series ender.

The logline for Season 10 is as follows: “With everyone living back under the same roof and Beverly adjusting to her new role as Grandsmotherer, the Goldbergs pandemonium is crazier than ever. As this latest chapter of life continues to unfold, the Goldbergs remind us that there is no bond greater than family, and there is nothing they can’t handle with each other’s support.”

‘The Goldbergs’ to End With Season 10 at ABC
Image
“The Goldbergs” is ending after 10 seasons at ABC, Variety has confirmed with sources. The Season 10 finale set to air on May 3 will serve as the single-camera comedy’s series finale.

The move to end the series is not altogether surprising, even though it has been a cornerstone of the ABC comedy slate throughout its run with solid ratings returns. “The Goldbergs” is currently the longest-running live-action network comedy on the air, but has faced difficulties in the past few years. George Segal, who starred as Albert “Pops” Solomon on the show, passed away in early 2021. Later that same year, series star Jeff Garlin exited the show following an Hr misconduct investigation.

Ending the show also comes at a difficult time for the broadcast TV business, with the major networks having ordered just a handful of comedy pilots at this point in the traditional pilot season as overall pilot order volume continue to plummet.

‘The Goldbergs’ To End With Season 10 On ABC
Image
Exclusive (Updated With Confirmation & Details): The Goldbergs’ journey through the 1980s is over. The family comedy’s current tenth season will be its last, with the May 3 season finale serving as a series finale. (Watch a promo for The Goldbergs‘ final episodes above.)

This does not come as a surprise. For shows of that age, renewals are not straightforward because of rising costs and declining ratings, and there had been questions over the past couple of years on how long The Goldbergs can go. The half-hour, from creator Adam F. Goldberg and Sony Pictures TV, is the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air and, given the way the broadcast business is going, there likely won’t be many others coming behind it that would be able join the exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies with double-digit season, 200+ episode runs.

A year ago, ABC signed new deals...

‘The Goldbergs’ Renewed for Season 10 at ABC
Image
“The Goldbergs” has been renewed for Season 10 at ABC.

However, questions still remain about how the single-camera comedy series will handle Jeff Garlin’s character, Murray Goldberg, going into the new season.

Garlin exited “The Goldbergs” in December following an investigation into the comedian’s onset behavior after he was accused of misconduct. Variety exclusively reported that Garlin would still be a part of Season 9 through the use of off-camera dialogue pulled from earlier episodes and unused takes, as well as previously shot images of Garlin.

According to an individual with knowledge of the production, official plans for Garlin’s character are forthcoming, but it is likely that he will be written off the show.

“The Goldbergs” remains one of ABC’s more popular shows even this late in its run. Season to date, the show is averaging a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and just over 4 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings.

‘The Goldbergs’ Renewed For Season 10 By ABC
Image
The Goldbergs, which recently hit the 200-episode mark, will keep going as ABC has renewed the family comedy for a 10th season.

With the pickup, the series from creator Adam F. Goldberg and Sony Pictures TV joins an exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies that have gone to double-digit runs. It is the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air.

The Goldbergs renewal comes as little surprise given that ABC in March inked a new deal with star/EP Wendi McLendon-Covey to continue on the series, as Deadline exclusively reported. Fellow original cast members Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile and Hayley Orrantia also have closed deals to return, Deadline has learned. They will continue to star alongside Sam Lerner, who was upped to series regular in Season 5.

Jeff Garlin, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, and Sean Giambrone in The Goldbergs' Excellent Adventure (2021)
“The Goldbergs” will be back for a 10th season, ABC announced on Tuesday.

The show will continue to focus on the Goldberg clan, led by mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey).

The series was created by Adam F. Goldberg, whose on-air stand-in is played by Sean Giambrone.

A premiere date for the 10th season has not yet been announced yet.

In this Wednesday’s episode, Beverly decides to join Adam and Brea (Sadie Stanley) on their much-anticipated beachside vacation in Miami to take of care of Pops’ (George Segal) possessions at his Florida condominium. Meanwhile, Barry (Troy Gentile)’s celebratory joy after acing the McAt is short-lived after Erica (Hayley Orrantia) becomes the local hero when she saves a man from choking at the mall food court, per ABC.

Segal, who played Sean’s beloved grandfather, died on March 23, 2021, and his character received an emotional farewell on the sitcom.

‘The Goldbergs’ Renewed For Season 9 By ABC

ABC has renewed The Goldbergs for a ninth season. The comedy chronicles creator Adam F. Goldberg’s chaotic but loving family as he grew up in the Reagan era.

The ’80s-set series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, Sam Lerner and Jeff Garlin.

The Goldbergs is produced by Happy Madison, Doug Robinson Productions and Adam F. Goldberg Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television. Goldberg, Doug Robinson, Alex Barnow, Chris Bishop, Annette Davis, Mike Sikowitz, David Guarascio and McLendon-Covey are executive producers.

The Goldbergs suffered a huge loss with the passing of George Segal, its Oscar-nominated co-star, before the end of Season 8. Segal died March 23 of complications from bypass surgery at the age of 87. He was a series regular on the family comedy for eight years, playing Albert “Pops” Solomon, Beverly’s (McLendon-Covey) laid-back widower father and a World War II Veteran.

Image
Joshua Malina (Scandal) and Beth Triffon (Ten Days in the Valley) have joined the casts of Showtime’s Shameless and ABC’s The Goldbergs, respectively, in recurring roles. Both initially signed for one-episode guest shots, which have already aired. Both were received well and ultimately turned into sizeable guest arcs.

Malina recurs as Arthur Trilling on the eleventh and final season of Shameless. Arthur is a longtime Chicago cop who stays safe on the job by refusing to leave his squad car. Then he is assigned Carl Gallagher as his junior partner and that changed everything.

Starring William H. Macy, the final season of Shameless finds the Gallagher family and the South Side at a crossroads, with changes caused by the Covid pandemic, gentrification and aging to reconcile.

Jeremy Allen, Ethan Cutkosky, Cameron Monaghan, Noel Fisher, Steve Howey, Shanola Hampton, Christian Isaiah and Kate Miner also star.

Ken Jeong’s ‘Dr. Ken’ Manages to Reboot ‘Community’ and Heal Dan Harmon’s Rift with Sony at the Same Time
Ken Jeong
Ken Park, a doctor pursuing a career in comedy, has been offered a great opportunity: A starring role in Dan Harmon’s new comedy about a group of misfits at a community college.

Park is a bit of a goofball, so ultimately Harmon writes the part of Señor Chang, an eccentric Spanish teacher, for the comedian. Sound familiar?

The Season 2 finale of Ken Jeong’s ABC sitcom “Dr. Ken” rips a page out of real life, sort of. “Community” creator Dan Harmon guest stars as, you guessed it, Dan Harmon (playing a particularly surly version of himself). Also appearing:

Alison Brie – who played Annie on the show, opposite Jeong’s Chang – and a few other familiar faces from the show, including recurring actors Erik Charles Nielsen (Garrett), Danielle Kaplowitz (Vicki), Richard Erdman (Leonard), and Luke Youngblood (Magnitude – pop pop!).

“The word ‘surreal’ was pervasive,” Jeong said of having Harmon on set.

NBC Drops Bill Cosby Sitcom Due To Sexual Assault Allegations
The fallout from rape allegations against Bill Cosby continues. According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has canceled a family comedy starring the 77-year-old actor. Although the show didn’t yet have a final script, many speculate that Netflix “postponing” its Thanksgiving special with the former Cosby Show star may have helped push NBC to its decision.

Rules of Engagement’s Mike Sikowitz and Shameless‘ Mike O’Malley were reportedly wanted to help write and produce the show, in which Cosby was a father of three married daughters with families. His name has been flooding headlines for the last few weeks after decade-old allegations of his sexual assault resurfaced. At the end of October, Queen Latifah and her team canceled a Cosby interview on The Queen Latifah Show due to the reports. Last week, his social media effort “Meme Me” went south quickly when Twitter users used the campaign to highlight the accusations against him.

NBC Pulls the Plug on Bill Cosby Comedy Project
Bill Cosby in Cosby (1996)
Less than 24 hours after Netflix postponed a planned Bill Cosby special, NBC nixed a comedy project that could have brought the 77-year-old comedian back to prime time.

An insider confirmed to People that the project is no longer in development for summer or fall 2015. The idea came from Mike O'Malley (Glee) and Mike Sikowitz and was only in the early stages; the duo hadn't even delivered a script.

The hope was for Cosby to play a patriarch of a multi-generational family in a classic family sitcom, and there was even talk of O'Malley playing one of the sons-in-law.

But that...

NBC's Bill Cosby project will not move forward
Bill Cosby
As new accusations of rape and sexual impropriety are levied against Bill Cosby, the comedy legend's broadcast partners are, predictably, pulling back. One day after Netflix announced that it was postponing the premiere date for the comedy special "Bill Cosby 77" (and one day after former supermodel Janice Dickinson told Entertainment Tonight that Cosby raped her in 1982), NBC confirms that it will not be moving forward with plans to bring Cosby back to TV with a new pilot. Back in July at the Television Critics Association press tour, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke described the Cosby show as "an important show for us." At the time, the project was described as a multi-cam set at Sony with Mike Sikowitz and Mike O'Malley writing. "It’s a multigenerational family show, so it’s very ensemble," Salke said. "Bill Cosby plays the patriarch of the family dispelling his classic wisdom on relationships, parenthood,...

Bill Cosby sitcom dumped by NBC
Bill Cosby
NBC has halted development on its Bill Cosby sitcom. In the wake of mounting rape allegations against the legendary comedian, the broadcaster has shelved its plan to return The Cosby Show star to primetime. The move follows Netflix "postponing" its plan to stream a Cosby stand-up special next week. NBC first announced an untitled family sitcom starring Cosby last January, with a pilot to be written by former Glee star Mike O’Malley and sitcom veteran Mike Sikowitz. The show was still in early development, but NBC intended to potentially debut a series next fall. Despite the traditional media and social media tempest,...

Netflix Postpones Bill Cosby Comedy Special
Bill Cosby in Cosby (1996)
Bill Cosby won't be telling jokes on Netflix anytime soon. In light of the groundswell of accusations from women who have accused the 77-year-old comedian of sexual assault, the pay service opted against giving Cosby a platform on Nov. 27. "At this time we are postponing the launch of the new stand-up comedy special Bill Cosby 77," Netflix said Tuesday evening in a statement. Cosby's publicist has reportedly said the decision was mutual. The special was billed as a birthday celebration for Cosby, who was expected to share "intimate and wildly entertaining stories from his childhood, first loves, and the endless adventure of parenthood.

What Will Happen to Bill Cosby’s NBC Show and Netflix Special?
Bill Cosby in Cosby (1996)
This summer, NBC execs were very happy to talk about the new sitcom they were developing for Bill Cosby. “We’re very committed, and that’s an important show for us,” Peacock entertainment president Jennifer Salke told reporters at NBC’s portion of the TV Critics Association summer press tour in July, announcing that former Glee star Mike O’Malley had agreed to write the new Cosby show (with another sitcom vet, Mike Sikowitz). A month later, Netflix was equally eager to kvell about Cos, saying it was “thrilled” to include a set by the comedy icon on its ambitious new slate of stand-up specials. But following a flurry of attention to decades-old allegations of sexual assault by Cosby against multiple women, as well as a brand-new accusation, NBC and Netflix have suddenly gone silent: When Vulture inquired about the status of the projects, both companies replied with a terse “no comment.

Bill Cosby is returning to television.

EW has confirmed that NBC has made a deal for an untitled family comedy starring Cosby and written by Mike O’Malley. The show is reportedly being eyed for summer or fall of 2015 with O’Malley set to executive produce alongside Mike Sikowitz.

NBC Exec Breaks Silence on 'Community' Cancellation
Chevy Chase, Ken Jeong, Joel McHale, Jim Rash, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, and Donald Glover in Community (2009)
NBC officially expelled Community back in May, canceling the eccentric cult comedy after its fifth season. Fans rallied to keep the series on the air with a web campaign based on the mantra "six seasons and a movie," but the network wasn't interested in heeding those audience demands. According to entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, the decision to pass came down to ratings, plain and simple.

11 Things We Learned at the NBC TCA: Scoop on 'Constantine,' 'Parenthood,' and More
NBC's presentation at the Television Critics Association's 2014 Summer press tour took place on Sunday, and we were on hand to get all the juicy details on the network's fall schedule. We learned a few goodies about highly-anticipated new shows "Constantine" and "State of Affairs," plus, new info on the Emmys, their upcoming live musical, and more.

1. Walken the Plank?

Perhaps the biggest news of the day was the announcement that Christopher Walken has landed the role of Captain Hook in the live musical version of "Peter Pan" -- an event planned for a December 4th airing. The actor "will be the first tap dancing Captain Hook you've ever seen," according to NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt.

2. A Maya Rudolph show isn't off the table

There may be more Maya Rudolph coming to the network in the future. Her "Maya Rudolph Show" special was considered an "imperfect first episode" and she...

NBC explains why it canceled 'Community'

It was the ratings, of course. But NBC’s top entertainment executives went on record to give a little more insight into their decision-making process on canceling Community and The Michael J. Fox Show last season.

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters at his Television Critics Association press tour session in Beverly Hills on Sunday that the Community fandom’s “six seasons and a movie” mantra had nothing to do with the network.

“That sixth season thing was created by them — I’m surprised they didn’t say ’10 seasons and a movie,’” the executive said. “And before my time...

Mike Sikowitz Joins CBS Comedy Pilot ‘The McCarthys’ As Showrunner
Mike Sikowitz has taken on his first assignment under the rich new overall deal he just signed with Sony Pictures Television. The comedy writer-producer has joined the studio’s CBS multi-camera comedy pilot The McCarthys as executive producer/showrunner. The McCarthys, from Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment, was retooled as multi-camera after shooting a single-camera pilot last season. Written/co-executive produced by Brian Gallivan, The McCarthys revolves around a big, sports-crazed Irish Catholic clan in Boston and the gay son (Tyler Ritter) whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. Sikowitz will exec produce alongside Olive Bridge’s Gluck and Richie Schwartz. This marks a return to multi-camera comedy and to CBS for Sikowitz, who previously served as executive producer on Sony’s long-running CBS comedy series Rules Of Engagement. He is repped by ICM Partners and Michael Gendler.

Mike Sikowitz Signs New Overall Deal With Sony TV
Exclusive: Comedy writer-producer Mike Sikowitz is staying at Sony Pictures Television with a new overall deal. Under the rich seven-figure pact, which I hear is for three years, he will continue to develop projects for the studio. Sikowitz was among Sony’s most prolific writers last development season, landing two pilot orders, for Welcome To The Family at NBC and Divorce at ABC. The first went to series that aired on Thursday last fall, and the second came close to a series pickup, with ABC keeping it in contention past May and Sony extending the options on the cast. Sikowitz, repped by ICM Partners and attorney Michael Gendler, previously served as an executive producer on Sony’s long-running CBS comedy series Rules Of Engagement. His credits also include CBS’ The Class, Fox’s Grounded for Life and NBC’s Friends.

Fall 2013 Network TV Preview: NBC Comedies a mostly forgettable bunch
NBC, at one time a bastion of network comedy, is now down to one two-hour comedy block each week, and with The Office now off the air, they’re hoping at least one of these new sitcoms will find an audience, or at least the critical buzz of Parks and Recreation. The first to premiere will be the much-anticipated return to weekly network TV of Michael J. Fox.

The Michael J. Fox Show, “Pilot”

Written and Created by Sam Laybourne and Will Gluck

Directed by Will Gluck

One of the most buzzed about new series this fall is The Michael J. Fox Show, premiering with two episodes on Sept. 26th and starring Michael J. Welcome to the Family Draws Inspiration from Famous Families
NBC's new comedy Welcome to the Family may portray a white family often bumping heads with a Latino family, but the cast and creator Mike Sikowitz clarified that the sitcom is not a culture clash.

The series follows a white family (Mike O'Malley and Mary McCormack) and a Latino family (Ricardo Chavira and Justina Machado) who bond when their children (Ella Rae Peck and Joey Haro) fall in love and plan a family.

TCA: ‘Welcome To The Family’ Stars, Ep On Latino Stereotypes & ‘Devious Maids’
Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Despite standing as such a large percentage of the overall U.S. population, Latino culture remains a largely invisible piece of the network primetime television landscape. So the cast and producers of the new NBC comedy Welcome to the Family were asked their thoughts on helping to break that mold a bit during a TCA session this morning. The series chronicles how cultures collide when a white family and a Latino family in Los Angeles are bonded together by their children who fall in love, followed quickly by an unplanned pregnancy. Exec producer Mike Sikowitz maintained that he wasn’t necessarily looking to push Latino culture to the forefront in the show, however. “I just felt it was important to do a show that I feel reflects L.A. or really any area in the country today,” Sikowitz said. “I was just...

New 2013 TV Series Breakdown: NBC
The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.

The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.

None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.

Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

TV News: NBC Announces Fall Schedule with Six New Shows, Changes to Every Night
Chicago – When you’re in as much of a ratings struggle as NBC, it makes sense to shake things up and that’s exactly what they’re doing in the Fall with a new show or an old show in a new time every single night of the week. “Chicago Fire,” “Revolution,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Parenthood” are moving. “Community” is being held until a midseason, 13-episode run. No decision yet made on “Celebrity Apprentice” or “Hannibal,” which isn’t that surprising as they are mid-season shows anyway although it shouldn’t give fans of either program confidence as NBC announced a midseason schedule as well and they’re not on it. Anything could still happen with either program however and they could be held as replacements for shows that fail. That may be the best shot for “Hannibal” fans now. The best new show on the...
