Why Netflix Canceled Chris Hemsworth's Hulk Hogan Movie
Image
Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan has left behind a legacy that is both immensely problematic and impossible to ignore. Perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable personalities in professional wrestling, Hogan was a major player during the 1980s wrestling boom (his 1988 match with André the Giant still boasts insane American viewership records). Since then, things have only gone downhill, with one controversial scandal after another piling up, culminating in the unsavory Gawker lawsuit and the exposure of Hogan's racist mindset, cementing his fall from grace in the public eye.

Hogan's legacy as a legendary, but deeply conflicting public figure (who also made some very questionable decisions that negatively impacted the wrestling sphere) is, for better or worse, fuel for a big-budget Hollywood biopic. As a result, a Hulk Hogan biopic with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the wrestler was in development for the longest time before being scrapped by Netflix last year.

Hulk Hogan’s Biopic Announcement

Back in 2019, it was announced that Thor actor Chris Hemsworth had been cast to play the lead role in a Hulk Hogan biopic directed by Todd Phillips (director of The Hangover and Joker) and made for Netflix. If you are wondering whether the biopic is still happening, we have you covered.

What Happened to Hulk Hogan’s “Very, Very Dark” Biopic by Chris Hemsworth That Netflix Scrapped?
Image
Legendary wrestler and WWE star Hulk Hogan has died following a cardiac arrest just a few hours ago, as TMZ reports that medics were dispatched but couldn’t keep the former wrestler alive.

The wrestler, who had his biopic in the works at Netflix with Chris Hemsworth attached as the lead role, couldn’t make the deal work out, and the film was eventually scrapped. However, it seems that before his death, the retired wrestler had some things to say about his canceled biopic.

Amidst declining health and being 71 years old, Hulk Hogan revealed in an interview with the Pdb podcast that the film was scrapped because a certain payment wasn’t made on time.

They kind of missed a beat in the contract, yeah. There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time.

Despite the failed project, Hulk Hogan was still happy reminiscing about the script that was “Very,...

Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan dies at 71
Hulk Hogan, Jacob Widén, and Oscar Kempe
Hulk Hogan was the inescapable face of wrestling in the 80s as he crossed over from being a WWE (then WWF) Superstar to a pop culture icon thanks to his larger-than-life persona and stature. People.com reports that Terry “Hulk” Hogan, whose birth name was Terry Bollea, had suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Florida and died at the age of 71. TMZ broke the news today that medics were sent to his residence and he was carried out in a stretcher. More details are sure to be revealed as the story develops.

Hogan brought attention to professional wrestling as the 12-time world champion and is credited with inspiring generations of younger wrestlers. He transcended the profession when Sylvester Stallone cast him in Rocky III as a fictitious wrestler named “Thunderlips.” This appearance would be the earliest of Hulk Hogan’s film resume. He would go on to star in a number of movies,...

'You're Talking About Me:' Anthony Mackie Reveals How Eminem Made 8 Mile Rap Battle Personal
Image
Anthony Mackie has made a name for himself outside the superhero world, but 2025 came with his first leading solo film, Captain America: Brave New World, where he took the shield as the titular character. However, his first role featured a different face-off.

Mackie made his debut in 2002's 8 Mile, which starred Eminem in the leading role. The musical drama is a semi-autobiographical story, following Eminem's Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, an aspiring rapper who attempts to win a rap contest to find a better life. Mackie played his opponent, Clarence aka Papa Doc, the leader of the Free World group, and revealed during an appearance on the Pivot Podcast that Eminem used his personal details during their rap battle at the end of the film.

8 Mile drew inspiration from Eminem's real life, but the rapper also used information from Anthony Mackie's real life. Around the 12:00 mark, Mackie addressed the film,...

'Joke's On Them': Lady Gaga Speaks Out on Joker 2's 'Hurtful' Razzie Win in SNL Monologue
Image
Joker: Folie à Deuxis infamous for how much it underperformed upon release last year, bombing at the box office and garnering rather harsh reviews. It was even given several Golden Raspberry Award (Razzie), including Worst Sequel along with Worst Screen Combo for Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix.

On Saturday night's episode of Saturday Night Live, Gaga appeared to pull double duty as the show's host and musical guest. In her opening monologue, she took some time to address the Joker sequel coming up short. After sarcastically remarking that people thought the film was "awesome," she then suggested she was happy about her Razzie win, explaining that this will help make her an "Egort."

“I’ve been very diligent about selecting films that would showcase my craft as a serious actor. Films such as Joker 2. Apparently, people thought it was awesome," she said. "Joaquin and I even got nominated for a Razzie,...

Joker: Folie à Deux Gets Brutally Mocked During Oscar Segment
Image
Joker: Folie à Deux continues to be the butt of jokes in the film industry following its much-publicized flop. Even the Academy Awards couldn't resist taking shots at the derided DC sequel as the event made one brutal joke at its expense, with the help of Los Angeles' finest.

Host Conan O'Brien led a segment during the 97th Academy Awards where he introduced members of the Los Angeles Fire Department and had them read some jokes off the teleprompter, saying “Now, I know you’re going to find this hard to believe, but there are some jokes even I’m not brave enough to tell,” before adding, “On behalf of myself, would you please read what’s in the prompter? Remember — everyone in this audience has to laugh; these are heroes!” LA Fire Department captain Erik Scott started the segment with a fiery joke about Folie à Deux, referencing the...

Oscars Host Conan O'Brien Calls on Firefighters to Poke Fun at 'Joker 2'
Image
Conan O'Brien is taking full advantage of his hosting duties at the 97th Academy Awards, making all sorts of hilarious jokes and references to the phenomenal and also turbulent year that 2024 was for the film industry and the greater Los Angeles area. In one of the more unique segments of the Awards show, O'Brien brought out the Los Angeles Fire Department Captains to celebrate their heroic efforts to put out the LA Wildfires. Besides recognizing the brave first responders, O'Brien also took the opportunity to give them the spotlight in a fun way— by having them tell jokes he deemed too brutal for him to tell. One such joke targeted a controversial and poorly received movie released late last year, Joker: Folie à deux. When O'Brien let the first Firefighter Captain tell a joke, it was an unexpectedly ruthless, with the Captain saying:

23 Years Ago, This Captain America: Brave New World Star Made Their Cinematic Debut Alongside One of Hip Hop’s Biggest Stars
Image
Anthony Mackie became one of Hollywood’s hottest stars with his lead role as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, which premiered on Feb 14. But Mackie has been part of the Marvel Universe since 2014, when he took on the role of Falcon (Sam Wilson) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although Steve Rogers gave him the shield already in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, was unsure about taking on the role. After John Walker briefly became Captain America, Sam ultimately decided to embrace the title by the end of the Disney+ series.

In his 23-year screen career, Mackie has played diverse characters. He portrayed Harry Mitchell, a junior adjustment agent in The Adjustment Bureau (which earned him two award nominations), and Sergeant J.T. Sanborn in The Hurt Locker, for which he won in the “Best Ensemble Cast” category and was nominated as “Best Supporting Actor” at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Lady Gaga Breaks Silence On ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Negative Reviews: “You Keep Going Even If Something Didn’t Connect In The Way You Intended”
Image
Months after her latest film Joker: Folie à Deux opened to bad reviews and very disappointing box office, Lady Gaga is sharing her perspective on the matter.

“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” Gaga told Elle in an interview published Tuesday. ‘It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” She adds that the fear of failure is what can be really damaging: “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey | Written by Todd Phillips, Scott Silver | Directed by Todd Phillips

Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 hit Joker, is an ambitious but ultimately misguided attempt to blend psychological drama with musical fantasy. While the original film’s gritty realism and subversive narrative struck a chord, this follow-up falters under the weight of its own pretensions, failing to deliver the emotional or thematic resonance it aspires to.

One of the most glaring issues lies in the film’s transformation into a musical. While the concept could have amplified the story’s exploration of Arthur Fleck’s fractured psyche, it instead comes across as incoherent and jarring. The elaborate musical numbers, such as Arthur and Harleen Quinzel’s (Lady Gaga) fantasy duets, feel disconnected from the grim, nihilistic tone of the story. This tonal dissonance...

Polarizing flop ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is coming to Max very soon
Image
In a year rife with spectacular cinematic misfires, “Joker: Folie à Deux” is the biggest one of all. Director Todd Phillips’ nihilistic musical sequel to his billion-dollar-grossing 2018 Batman-adjacent psychological thriller cost over $200 million to produce and failed to break even at the box office. Most critics didn’t like it and audiences fully rejected it; it’s the only superhero movie to ever get a “D” audience rating from market research firm CinemaScore.

And now, the film is maniacally dancing its way onto streaming, where viewers who didn’t want to spend their time and money seeing it in a theater can see if it’s really as bad as its reputation suggests. “Joker: Folie à Deux” premieres on Max next week, the streamer announced Friday.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Gets Max Streaming Release Date
Image
“Joker: Folie à Deux,” Todd Phillips’ sequel to the Oscar-winning film starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be available to stream on Max on Dec. 13. It will debut on HBO linear on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. Et.

The divisive film grossed $206 million at the global box office, including $58 million in North America. It cost $200 million to produce and is expected to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run.

Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge called “Folie à Deux” a “scandalously unpopular sequel” and wrote that this time around, it “feels like ‘Joker’ hates us — or, more to the point, it’s as if Phillips turned on his original audience.”

“Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital,” reads the film’s logline.

Lady Gaga stars in “Folie à Deux” as Harley Quinn alongside Phoenix’s Joker.

Is 8 Mile Based On A True Story?
Image
While the 2002 movie is fiction, the 8 Mile true story is so close to the life of star Eminem (Marshall Mathers) that it borders on being a biopic. Directed by Curtis Hanson with Scott Silver on screenwriting duties, 8 Mile stars hip-hop megastar Eminem as Jimmy Smith Jr., a struggling underground Detroit rapper trying to escape from his working-class routes using the local rap battle scene. Taking to the stage under the name B-Rabbit, Jimmys story in 8 Mile so closely mirrors Eminems life that many wonder how much of the 2002 movie is true.

The similarities between 8 Mile and Eminems life arent coincidental. The rapper was a key creative driving force behind the movie, collaborating with Scott Silver on the story and personally choosing director Curtis Hanson. A huge amount of the plot of 8 Mile rings true to Eminems early career, so while the 2002 movie is a work of fiction,...

Todd McFarlane Thinks ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Was Good – Offers To Make It Better: “Give me all the film, put me in a room for three days, and let me edit it”
Image
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ premiered to poor reviews from both critics and audiences, with a low 32% approval rating, marking it as “rotten.”

It also received a “D” on CinemaScore—the lowest rating yet for a superhero film, although calling ‘Joker 2’ a superhero movie might be a stretch.

The movie flopped at the box office and again on PVOD. Given its troubled development, this outcome isn’t surprising. Lady Gaga reportedly didn’t expect it, but others involved in the film weren’t shocked by its performance.

Recently, legendary comic artist Todd McFarlane shared his thoughts on Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and offered suggestions for improving the 2024 DC film, which has faced criticism.

McFarlane sees where the movie could be adjusted to make it flow better. He thinks there’s a version of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ that could work with the right changes and even jokes about editing it himself.

Todd McFarlane Thinks ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Was Good – Offers To Improve It: “Give me all the film, put me in a room for three days, and let me edit it”
Image
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ premiered to terrible reviews from both critics and audiences. Right now, it has only a 32% approval rating from both groups (critics and audience), marking it as “rotten.

It also earned a “D” on CinemaScore, the lowest rating yet for a superhero movie—though calling ‘Joker 2’ a superhero movie or even a comic adaptation is a bit of a stretch.

The movie bombed at the box office and bombed once again on PVOD, and quite frankly based on its nightmarish development we could expect nothing more. Lady Gaga was reportedly surprised at this turn of events, but it seems not everyone who was involved with the development of the movie was shocked to see the movie failing.

Most recently, legendary comic book artist Todd McFarlane shared his thoughts on Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and suggested ways to improve the 2024 DC film, which has faced criticism.

"Let Me Edit It": Todd McFarlane Offers Generous Joker 2 Review After Disastrous 32% Rt Score & Thinks He Could Fix It
Image
Legendary comic book artist Todd McFarlane gives his thoughts on Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie Deux and suggests a way to improve the poorly received 2024 DC film. Joker: Folie Deux divided audiences due to its musical numbers and its drastic turn on the titular character's motivations, among other criticisms. Despite Joker's critical and commercial success only five years prior, Joker: Folie Deux flopped at the box office and received abysmal reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Image Comics president and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, lauded for his work on Batman: Year Two and Spider-Man, shares with Screen Rant his thoughts on Joker: Folie Deux. The artist acknowledges the criticisms Joker: Folie Deux has received and argues that certain parts of the film could be rearranged to create a more streamlined movie. McFarlane believes "there's a hybrid" in there that could be recovered with enough changes and playfully offers to edit the film himself,...

As Warner Bros. deals with the heavy ramifications of Joker: Folie Deux's undeniable failure, one of the studio's bosses acknowledges that the blockbuster sequel's fate is no laughing matter. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav offers his thoughts on the widely derided comic book movie.

During a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call, Zaslav bemoaned the "inconsistency" of the company film's business after a string of hits and misses at the box office in 2024. Zaslav conceded that the Joker sequel's results have been "disappointing," as Warner Bros. deals with the financial ramifications. "Inconsistency also remains an issue at our motion picture studio, as reinforced recently by the disappointing results of Joker 2," Zaslav said.

Why Netflix Scrapped Chris Hemsworth's Hulk Hogan Biopic Movie Explained By The Retired Wrestler
Image
Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan reveals why his planned movie biopic starring Chris Hemsworth has been scrapped by Netflix. Hogan rose to prominence as part of the WCW and WWF (rebranded to WWE) wrestling franchises in the 80s and 90s, and won multiple wrestling championships. In the early 1990s, Hogan left WWF to pursue an acting career, before being coaxed back to the ring with WCW. A popular yet controversial figure, it seemed only a matter of time before a biopic on the star would be commissioned. Netflix was developing a Hogan biopic, with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the wrestling icon.

However, in an interview with Pdb podcast, Hogan revealed that the project was scrapped due to issues with the contract. He then spoke about how he loved the script and how it was dark. The retired wrestler elaborated that the role could have seen Hemsworth in Oscar contention.

Hulk Hogan Reveals Why the Chris Hemsworth-Led Netflix Biopic Was Scrapped
Image
An "amazing" Hulk Hogan biopic starring Chris Hemsworth was once in the works at Netflix, but an issue with the contract ultimately led to its demise. The feature, with Joker collaborators Scott Silver and Todd Phillips attached as writer and director, respectively, had undergone a three-year process when a "payment wasn't placed at the right time." According to the controversial wrester himself (real name Terry Bollea), the biopic was shaping up to be a potential award season contender. During an appearance on the Pbd podcast, Hogan spoke about the scrapped film.

"They kind of missed a beat in the contract. YeahThere was a payment that wasn't placed at the right time. The script was amazing. Scott Silver, who wrote the script for Joker, Wolf of Wall Street, a bunch of other movies, said, 'This is the best thing I've ever written.' When I read it, I'm like, oh my god,...

Hulk Hogan says canned biopic tied to contract issues with Netflix, calls script “amazing”
Image
Whatcha gonna do, when your biopic gets canceled on you? The once-planned Hulk Hogan biopic which was set to star Chris Hemsworth looks to have been leg dropped into oblivion, disappearing without much fuss. Now, Terry Bollea himself is running wild on just what happened with the movie.

Appearing on the Pbd podcast (via Wrestlezone), Hulk Hogan said the now-scrapped biopic ran into issues with dropping the ball over legal matters with Netflix. “They kind of missed a beat in the contract. Yeah…There was a payment that wasn’t placed at the right time. The script was amazing. Hulk Hogan Reveals Why His Planned Biopic Failed
Image
The name Terry Gene Bollea will probably not mean that much to you unless you’re a proper fan, but the name Hulk Hogan probably will. And yes, they are the same person, the two of them. Hulk Hogan is a former professional wrestler with a famous career path, but also a very popular celebrity.

Back in 2019, it was announced that a Hulk Hogan biopic was in the works and that The Hangover and Joker director Todd Phillips was attached to direct, with Chris Hemsworth set to play Hogan. The film has been in developmental hell for years before, earlier this year, Phillips confirmed that the movie had been scrapped.

Hogan was recently a guest on the Pbd podcast, and among the topics discussed there was the canceled movie. Hogan was asked about the cancelation and the former wrestler revealed what actually happened and why the movie ended up being...

Hulk Hogan Explains Why His Netflix Biopic Was Scrapped
Image
Despite fan excitement, Netflix decided to cancel its Hulk Hogan biopic. While very little explanation was offered at the time, the former WWE superstar recently opened up about why the project was dropped.

According to Hogan, a few missed deadlines caused the contract to fall through. "They kind of missed a beat in the contract. There was a payment that wasn't placed at the right time," he told the Pbd Podcast before praising the writing team. "The script was amazing. Joker 2's Struggles Continue With Digital Release Following Box Office Disaster
Image
Joker: Folie Deux continues to be a laughingstock as its reputation takes another hit following its much-talked-about box-office disaster. The panned comic book film struggles to find its footing via Premium Video-On-Demand (PVOD) one week after debuting on the platform.

Per Collider, Folie Deux is fourth in its debut week on the iTunes charts, which focus on transactions, trailing the horror drama The Substance in third. Meanwhile, the Joker sequel also placed fourth on the Fandango charts, which rank films based on revenue. Another Warner Bros. title, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, tops both charts in its fourth week.

Quentin Tarantino Praises ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’: Todd Phillips Is ‘Saying F**k You’ to the Audience and ‘Comic Book Geeks’
Image
Quentin Tarantino stands alone as an auteur with praise for Todd Phillips’ box-office disaster “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Where Paul Schrader couldn’t get through more than 25 minutes of the widely panned sequel, now sputtering out in theaters and headed to VOD, Tarantino adores Phillips’ anti-paean to comic book lovers, movie audiences, and fans of the first film.

Appearing on the “Bret Easton Ellis” podcast (via World of Reel), Tarantino praised Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as one of the greatest he’s ever seen. Meanwhile, “Joker 2” continues to tank in theaters, grossing just over $201 million worldwide. Globally, the 2019 original “Joker” grossed more than $1 billion.

“I really, really liked it, really, a lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking,” Tarantino said. “But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie,...

Joker: Folie Deux Finally Reaches Box-Office Milestone Before Digital Premiere
Image
Joker: Folie Deux has something to smile about during its dismal box office run, at least a little bit. The widely panned comic book movie reaches its last major financial milestone before it hits the digital market.

Per ComicBook.com, Folie Deux crossed the $200 million mark worldwide this past weekend, with the Joker sequel making $201.1 million at the time of writing. However, the movie has yet to make $60 million domestically, with the $600,000 it made across North American cinemas taking that tally to a disappointing $57.8 million. Folie Deux was kicked out of thousands of cinemas heading into last weekend, with the film failing to make the top 10 box-office chart.

Joker 2 Box Office Manages To Pass Major Global Milestone Four Weeks After Release Despite Lackluster Theatrical Run
Image
Despite a collapse at the box office, Joker: Folie a Deux just crossed a major milestone worldwide. As the sequel to the divisive $1 billion Joker movie, Folie a Deux has received extremely negative reviews and has become a severe financial disappointment. The movie reportedly has a $190 million budget, which far exceeds the original's $65 million, and added Lady Gaga to the cast as Harley Quinn. It was released on October 4.

After three weeks, Joker 2 has finally crossed the $200 million milestone at the worldwide box office, according to a report by The Numbers. The results were a disappointing total for the sequel, which has earned just $57.8 million domestically and $143.3 million internationally. Surprisingly, this news comes just days after it was announced that the movie would be available digitally on October 29. 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD copies will be available starting on December 17.

Joker: Folie a Deux Plot Recreated in Incredibly Short Lego Fan Video
Image
A creative fan-made two-minute Lego video has given DC fans the chance to see a retelling of the entire plot of Joker: Folie a Deux without needing to sit through the heavily panned box office bomb. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 hit Joker failed to capture the magic of the original film when it arrived in cinemas at the beginning of the month, but this humorously condensed short manages to do the impossible and turn the movie into something worth watching.

Summarizing key events, character arcs, and plotlines of the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-starring movie in a runtime that is only a fraction of the Todd Phillips film, the stop-motion video puts a lighthearted spin on the dark and dreary story of Arthur Fleck. While the film may have disappointed the vast majority of critics and audiences, this fan take on the story is still worth checking out,...

Joker: Folie à Deux sets 4K Blu-ray date; full special features are now listed
Image
While this year has had its fair share of surprising flops, Joker: Folie à Deux is probably one of the more surprising ones. It had the hype of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn and the musical twist potentially lent itself to exploring interesting territory as an R-rated sequel to a notorious comic book villain. The movie’s response would become incredibly underwhelming, and Blu-ray.com has announced that Warner Bros. is already set to release the film’s 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray release on December 17. The digital release is going to be even sooner, with a recent Variety report on the film’s box office woes revealing WB is dumping it on digital early – October 29 – in the hopes of recouping some of its $200 million investment.

Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, and Harry Lawtey. The description reads, “Joker: Folie À Deux...

Movie Sequels With Worse Box Office Openings Than Their Predecessors
Image
The current state of the movie industry shows that sequels are all the rage at the box office. The majority of the highest-grossing movies of 2024 so far have been sequels, having incredible opening weekends and heavily persuading people to go to the theaters to see them. Usually, sequels manage to out-gross their predecessors, and the opening weekend is crucial to their overall intake.

However, as seen recently with Joker: Folie Deux, not every sequel to a blockbuster sensation will have the same commercial success. This particular sequel's inability to earn a solid opening weekend made major headlines, and it's been going downhill ever since. It wasn't the first time a sequel bombed on its opening weekend, as various superhero films and continuations of memorable blockbusters met a similar fate.

Quick Links Joker Barely Resembled the DC Character Arthur Fleck or the Joker?

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux to follow

Directing 2019s Joker and its 2024 sequel Joker: Folie Deux, Todd Phillips recently and publicly confirmed that Joaquin Phoenix's version of the titular villain is not the same one that comic book fans have treasured all these years. In addition to these two psychological thriller films lying somewhere outside the DC canon, the directors most recent moniker of calling Fleck an "unwitting icon" attempts to deconstruct the character, making him easier to understand for audiences. But something has to be asked: if Todd Phillips (and writer Scott Silver) always had it in their minds to deviate so wildly from the original character, was the Joker persona needed in the first place?

Before exploring all the dark aspects and gritty themes of the movie, there are a couple...

Todd Philips and Joaquin Phoenix Think Joker 2s Ending Was Optimistic
Image
Joker: Folie Deux is the long-awaited sequel to 2019's Joker. The first film, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, was a success, scoring 89% on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, and grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Given the success of its predecessor, it was only expected that Joker: Folie Deux would follow in the same footsteps. However, the sequel, which was released on October 4, 2024, has taken a rather sour turn and looks on its way to becoming a box office bomb.

The sequel sees Arthur Fleck incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital and awaiting trial for the crimes he committed two years prior. While in hospital, Arthur meets and falls in love with Harley "Lee" Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. Already in constant flux about his identity, Arthur's new love would prefer him to own his identity as Joker, while his lawyer hopes to argue that Arthur has dissociative identity disorder and that the...

New Report Reveals How Much Warner Bros. Will Lose Following Joker 2's Big Flop
Image
Instead of having Warner Bros. executives laughing their way to the bank, Joker: Folie Deux looks set to land the prominent studio in a serious hole. A new report confirms the financial losses the sequel is set to trigger following its box-office bomb.

According to Variety, Folie Deux is set to cost Warner Bros. a fortune, with the sequel now projected to make $65 million domestically and earn between $210 million and $215 million worldwide when its box-office run ends. Considering the Joker follow-up's budget is $200 million, not including the roughly $100 million spent on marketing and distribution, the movie is expected to lose Warner Bros. between $150 million and $200 million following its disastrous run in cinemas, according to insiders and rival executives.

After setting multiple unwanted records at the box office, Joker: Folie Deux is going to be coming to Digital earlier than expected. The sequel's Digital release date has been revealed, and it's going to happen less than a month after the movie's release.

This comes just weeks after the film premiered in theaters on Oct. 4, being met with harsh reviews and falling far short of expectations at the box office. The big-budget sequel will not even come close to topping the $1 billion mark at the box office like the original film did in 2019. Currently, Joker: Folie Deux is sitting with $165 million earned worldwide, a number that is seen as a big disappointment given the $200 million budget with roughly $100 million more spent on marketing costs.
