This loved-up ensemble piece is cheerfully apolitical, pro-drugs and pro-hedonism – and features a very funny film debut from Danny Dyer
A warm nostalgic glow surrounds this likably daft and zeitgeisty one-crazy-night clubbing adventure from 1999. It’s a Cool Britannia time-capsule written and directed by Justin Kerrigan, starring John Simm, Shaun Parkes, Lorraine Pilkington, Nicola Reynolds and a cherubic young Danny Dyer making his movie debut. Dyer’s character ends up down the pub moodily swearing off drugs for ever – and if we wondered how that was going to turn out, we can flashforward to his performance this year in Nick Love’s Marching Powder, in which he does much the same thing.
Human Traffic revolves around a group of gurning mates: a classic 90s ensemble of mononymous characters – Jip, Koop, Lulu, Nina and Moff – individually introduced in freeze-frame voiceover in that distinctive 90s Britmovie style, as popularised by Danny Boyle...

Doctor Who had one of its best episodes air on June 30, 2007, eighteen years ago, which Russell T. Davies reportedly wrote only in four days. The series 3 finale ‘Last of the Time Lords’ was written by Davies and was directed by Colin Teague and Graeme Harper, continuing the story of the Master and the Toclafane invasion from the previous episodes.
While the arc is considered to be one of the best in the New Who era, many were also disappointed with it, calling the episode the weakest entry in the trilogy and a dissatisfying finale. Davies still considered it a separate story from the previous two episodes, but it is the obvious conclusion in the story arc.

Mystery thrillers are one of the staples of British television, with the creative minds from across the pond able to churn out gripping, twisting tales at an impressive rate. However, with such high competition coming from the likes of Death in Paradise and The Marlow Murder Club, it can be tough to find long-standing success, a fate that has befallen a recent British thriller starring a comic legend as a man sucked into the dangerous world of criminal drug gangs in rural Britain.
Said series is Out There, a hard-hitting drama starring the beloved Martin Clunes as farmer Nathan Williams. According to The Sun,Out There has officially been axed by ITV after just one season, leaving many disappointed after the show had received strong reviews. However, that "many" were still too few, with higher-ups citing the lack of achievement in the ratings department as the main reason behind the chop.

Popular ITV detective drama Grace is officially back in action as production on Season 6 has kicked off in Brighton. The series, based on the bestselling novels by Peter James, has grown into a flagship title for the broadcaster, blending gritty British crime storytelling with a stellar titular performance by Life on Mars and Doctor Who alum John Simm as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace.
Since its debut in 2021, Grace has seen its fanbase continue to expand thanks to its procedural intensity and much-lauded minimalist approach. The choice of Brighton as its filming location and the focus on quality over churning multiple episodes has endeared it to a fanbase that has embraced it as a breath of fresh air within a sub-genre that, you can argue, has become oversaturated. With each season drawing from James’ Roy Grace novels, viewers are treated to adaptations that walk a fine line between literary loyalty and cinematic tension.

From the moment a lifeless figure is discovered in a dusty pigeon loft, I, Jack Wright drags us into a chamber of rituals: the solemn gathering, the crack of the lawyer’s ledger, the will proclaimed like an oracle’s verdict. Jack’s sudden absence reveals itself less as an end than a threshold to revelation—each beneficiary framed in the cold light of familial obligation, greed and unspoken grief. That single act of reading seals destinies, fractures loyalties and summons questions that refuse easy answers.

The world loves a British detective series. Whether it's the long-running Midsomer Murders or a critically acclaimed series like Broadchurch, the gorgeous British countryside or gritty urban streets make for perfect crime-fighting locations, often solved by troubled geniuses in senior positions at the Metropolitan Police. A favorite of many, the hit ITV crime drama Grace, based on the series of bestselling novels by Peter James, was recently renewed for a sixth outing before the fifth had even begun, such is the faith given to it by higher-ups.
However, before thoughts turn to what lies in store for the titular detective in the sixth season, there's the small matter of an emotionally powerful fifth to come. It has now been officially confirmed, as cited on Radio Times, that Grace Season 5 will return to screens on Sunday, April 6, at 8 p.m. BST. Whenever a book becomes popular and a bestseller, it's only a matter of time before it becomes a movie or TV show. And when these books reach a certain level of popularity or relevance, they can receive multiple adaptations. Books like Pride and Prejudice, Stephen King's It or Carrie, or Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express are now classic books that have received multiple movie or TV show adaptations. But while these popular books have taken to the screen more than once, they aren't close to the many adaptations some of the most adapted books of all time have.
Everyone knows the story of Dracula, Frankenstein or Tarzan, but probably not everyone knows just how many adaptations these books have. Some of the most adapted books have over 100 adaptations between movies, TV and theater productions. One of these books has more than 500 different adaptations. Other books have become such...

British crime dramas, comedies, mysteries and procedurals are becoming more and more popular. And platforms like Britbox make these series more accessible to people from all around the world. Britbox has some of the best and most popular British TV shows, from Sherlock to Line of Duty. There are also some underrated cult classics available on Britbox, like The It Crowd, which almost had an American remake.
British TV series are popular because of their character-driven narrative and limited episodes, which gives the storylines enough time to develop without including too many filler episodes. Many British TV series are also based on books by popular authors like Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Peter James. After two years of waiting, Sacha Dhawan's incarnation of the Master makes his return to the Whoniverse in a new Doctor Who audio adventure. The actor made a surprise debut in 2020's season 12 premiere "Spyfall", where it was revealed that the Thirteenth Doctor's (Jodie Whittaker) MI5 contact 0 was the rogue Time Lord, vengeful and angered after his world was shattered by recently uncovered Time Lord history. Burning Gallifrey down and wiping out the species once more, Dhawan's incarnation of the Master tried to invade Earth with interdimensional foes, created Time Lord/Cyberman hybrids, and stole the Doctor's body.

The following contains major spoilers for Inspector Ellis Season 1, Episode 1, "Hanmore," now streaming on Acorn TV. It also contains discussion of violence and sexual assault.
Acorn TV's Inspector Ellis is the latest entry in British television's long list of crime dramas, and it will immediately grab viewers' attention because of who's in the title role. Sharon D Clarke is a powerhouse, with three Olivier Awards and a Tony Award nomination under her belt, to name just a small cross-section of her acclaim. It's kind of surprising that no one has cast her as the lead of a series like this yet, but her performance as Detective Chief Inspector Ellis is everything viewers could possibly ask for.
The rest of Inspector Ellis, though, doesn't rise up to Clarke's level. Series creators Paul Logue and Sian Ejiwunmi-Le Berre have crafted a show that is completely outshined by its lead actor. Season 1, Episode 1, "Hanmore,...

The following contains spoilers for Ridley Series 2, Episode 1, "A Sleeping Tiger - Part 1," which debuted Sunday, Sept. 15 on PBS.
There's no shortage of star-led crime dramas in British television -- but amongst that busy group, Ridley stood out upon its debut because of the performance of Adrian Dunbar. Centering a whole show around one protagonist means that the aforementioned star has to completely hold the viewer's attention, and Dunbar has always been able to do that in spades. Now Ridley Series 2 has made it over to American shores by virtue of PBS, and he's still the best thing about the program.

It's a day like any other for Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler (John Simm), the Manchester policeman at the center of BBC One's Life on Mars (available through a BritBox subscription). Everything is normal until strange circumstances send Sam hurtling into the past. The logline concept sounds great on paper, but it's even better in execution. With far more than just a shoddy framework built around a gimmick, Life on Mars is a hefty series that's never bogged down by awkward exposition. As Sam tries to figure out what happened to him, his journey takes him through intriguing cases, pits him against his peers, and, yes, ultimately answers its most pertinent questions.
Life on Mars aired for two seasons from 2006 to 2007 before spawning an equally brilliant sequel series, Ashes to Ashes (2008-2010). Whereas many other shows premised on similar sci-fi twists tend to lose the thread (and audience interest...

Exclusive: Labour Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is being urged to amend existing diversity monitoring to include age in the UK.
Nicky Clark’s Acting Your Age Campaign (Ayac) has today released a film calling for the amendment to mandatory monitoring, which it says is a major challenge to women over 45 in UK broadcasting.
A list of British actresses including Julie Graham, Hermione Norris, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Sarah Parish, Amanda Redman, Juliet Stevenson and Indira Varma have backed the call and appear in the film, along with actors such as John Simm, Adrian Dunbar and Martin Clunes.
Campaigner and Ayac founder Clark said the film is an “open letter” to Nandy, claiming that without women’s age representation being monitored, it cannot be measured and the real picture behind equality in the industry “is vague to the point of obfuscation and can’t be challenged and ultimately changed.”

The 2023 comedy thriller Cocaine Bear may be getting a sequel, with reports suggesting that an ursine follow-up is in development.
Last year’s Cocaine Bear was an interesting saga that didn’t quite live up to its promise of its title. Ahead of its release, the film garnered plenty of interest because of the irresistible nature of its premise: it’s a ‘trapped in the woods’ story where tourists, locals and criminals are hunted by a terrifying predator that, (as the title implies) is off its head on cocaine.
The ensemble cast, the 80s setting, the late Ray Liotta making an appearance – there was much to enjoy, although when all was said and done, there was a feeling that Elizabeth Banks’ film didn’t quite hang together as well as everybody was hoping it would.
Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Alden Ehrenrich, and Liotta co-starred alongside the titular bear in the R-rated film.

Russell T Davies expands the Whoniverse with a long-awaited spin-off focusing on the Sea Devils at San Diego Comic-Con. The series reunites familiar faces like Kate Stewart and introduces new characters played by Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The Sea Devil's emergence triggers an international crisis that involves Unit in The War Between The Land and The Sea.
Terrifying old foes and familiar faces collide, as the first spin-off of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who era is confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con with The War Between The Land And The Sea. Gatwa took on the role of the Time Lord following David Tennant's brief return for 2023's 60th-anniversary specials. Despite representing a whole new era of the show, returning showrunner Russell T Davies has long wanted to see the Whoniverse grow, revisiting familiar companions on their own journeys and taking advantage of the full scope of the universe.

If Doctor Who is clear about one thing, it's that death is not necessarily the end. After all, what else is regeneration but a way for the Doctor to cheat death? But he's not the only person who's done such a thing. Some of his friends and companions have died in tragic and dramatic circumstances, only to return later on.
In truth, Doctor Who doesn't really like permanently killing off its characters. It's a family show and children hate it when a favorite character is taken away from them. And that's fine there are other shows for that. So plenty of the most loved people on Doctor Who have lived to fight another day after their supposed final moments.

The following contains major spoilers for Grace Series 4, Episode 2, "Want You Dead," now streaming on BritBox. It also contains mention of child abuse and descriptions of violence.
If the Grace Series 4 premiere was an excellent example of a reliable TV mystery, Series 4, Episode 2, "Want You Dead" is a cautionary tale about how easy it is to miss the mark. It's still a worthwhile watch -- but largely because of the performances of the BritBox series' impressive cast. Plot-wise, there are some clear deviations from Peter James' book of the same name, and some massive plot holes that the episode falls flat into.
"Want You Dead" picks up shortly after the events of the premiere, with Detective Inspector Roy Grace convinced his nemesis Alvin Smallbone is plotting against him and his pregnant fiance. However, the discovery of a body in a park leads Grace and his team through a chain of magic-related murders.

The following contains major spoilers for Grace Series 4, Episode 1, "Dead Man's Time," now streaming on BritBox.
The crime drama has become a British television staple because of series like Grace, which returns for its fourth series on BritBox for U.S. audiences. The show follows a proven path to success: take the works of a successful British mystery author -- in this case, Peter James -- find a compelling lead actor, and build a series around those two things. But in the hands of veterans like writer Ed Whitmore and star John Simm, it never feels formulaic. Rather, it feels like an example of why British crime dramas are so good.
The Grace Series 4 premiere "Dead Man's Time" adapts James' novel of the same name, which centers on an elderly woman attacked in her home. But what seems like a typical home invasion, of course, turns out to be something...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 4, "73 Yards."
Doctor Who continues the trend of introducing political villains, with the new Prime Minister adding a dark twist to the series. Roger ap Gwilliam stands out as a realistic and ominous villain, mirroring modern right-wing politics with his nuclear ambitions. The new character adds a more believable and unsettling dimension to the already intriguing catalog of Doctor Who villains.
Doctor Who's returning showrunner is continuing a trend he began almost two decades ago, adding another villain to the franchise from a specific political arena. Russell T Davies brought Doctor Who back in 2005 and remained in charge until 2010, when he handed the keys to the franchise to Steven Moffat. During Davies' first time in the showrunner's chair, he introduced a string of antagonists who all held the position of British Prime Minister. Now, in Doctor Who's Disney era, it seems as...

Talk about cinematic ecstasy. Has any film captured the ‘90s rave generation like Human Traffic? Justin Kerrigan’s 1999 pilled-up cult classic is a rave-centric romp through a carnage-fuelled Cardiff weekend – a love-letter to getting loaded, featuring the first performance from Danny Dyer, and early turns from John Simm, Andrew Lincoln, and Shaun Parkes. The film has remained a firm favourite over the decades – and 25 years on, Empire celebrates its impact and ongoing legacy in a brand new anniversary feature, speaking to Kerrigan, Dyer and Simm about their memories of its madcap making.
Just like the on-screen antics, the creation of Human Traffic was something of a non-stop party – with all involved not holding back in bringing the good vibes to the screen. Take that legendary “Nice one, bruvva!” scene, in which Dyer’s Moff and Simm’s Jip end a phone call in endearingly chaotic style. “We pushed that to the absolute fucking extreme,...

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
