Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen in Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023)
Book Club: The Next Chapter - Cast & Character Guide
Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen in Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023)
Book Club: The Next Chapter will see the continued adventures of the titular women's reading group, and while all four main actresses return, they're not the only members of the Book Club: The Next Chapter cast. The original 2018 movie, Book Club, was directed by Bill Holderman and co-written by Holderman and Erin Simms, and it sees the lives of Diane (Diane Keaton), Vivian (Jane Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen), and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) change after they all read Fifty Shades of Grey. Book Club 2 found the women in Italy on a bachelorette trip celebrating Vivian's engagement to Arthur (Don Johnson), culminating in a destination wedding.

The combined talent of the lead veteran actresses turned Book Club into a hit, as it grossed over $106 million worldwide against a $10 million budget (via The Numbers). While Book Club 2 got mixed reviews, with negative critiques pointing to an unoriginal plot, the cast was praised. The...

Where Was Book Club 2 Filmed? Italian Filming Locations Explained
Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Book Club: The Next Chapter

Book Club: The Next Chapter sees the characters traveling to Italy, and the filmmakers and cast were on-location for the majority of the shoot. Directed by Bill Holderman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Erin Simms, Book Club 2 takes the decades-long friends to a place they’ve always wanted to visit, but never got a chance to because things would come up.

Vivian (Jane Fonda), Diane (Diane Keaton), Carol (Mary Steenburgen), and Sharon (Candice Bergen) decide to be adventurous after lockdown, flying to Italy ahead of Vivian’s (surprise) wedding in Tuscany. Between having their luggage stolen, meeting new people, and shopping for a wedding dress, the lifelong friends have quite a memorable time. Book Club: The Next Chapter was actually filmed in Italy, with production primarily taking place in and around Rome, with some scenes shot in Venice as well.

After lockdown is over, the women of Book Club: The Next Chapter decide to take a trip to Italy. Doubling as a bachelorette outing for Vivian, who is engaged to be married to Arthur, the foursome go on a journey together that is long overdue. Book Club: The Next Chapter has received a...

Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Book Club: The Next Chapter

Book Club: The Next Chapter is a follow-up to 2018’s Book Club, and the film has a soundtrack that includes a mixture of American and Italian songs. Directed by Bill Holderman from a screenplay co-written with Erin Simms, Book Club: The Next Chapter takes its main characters to Italy, a trip that is long overdue for them since they initially planned to go over 40 years prior.

Book Club: The Next Chapter Review - The Page-Flipping Fab Four Head to Italy, But It’s Not So Fab
Image
The opening title card in Book Club: The Next Chapter comes from the great novelist Paulo Coelho: “At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie.” It’s the elixir we take into this follow-up of the surprise 2017 box office hit Book Club, which starred Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen playing four 65+ women who have a kind of sexual awakening after reading the mega bestselling romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Like that book, the discussions in Book Club were frank, and the film went on to garner more than $100 million at the box office. And, like the Fifty Shades of Grey films, Book Club: The Next Chapter just falls limp.

Ms. Fonda, Bergen, Keaton, and Steenburgen: With all due respect — we love you, and you deserve better.

Book Club: The Next Chapter Review - A Thin But Heartwarming & Entertaining Sequel
Image
Some movies are heartfelt and moving despite not having much of a story at all, and Book Club: The Next Chapter is one such film. The sequel to 2018’s Book Club, The Next Chapter sees the characters on a trip to Italy as they enter the next stage in their lives and reaffirm their friendship. It’s a lovely, warm film overall, though it lingers for longer than need be and has no major conflict. Directed by Bill Holderman from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erin Simms, Book Club: The Next Chapter is fluff, but if you’re willing to go along for the ride, it will occasionally pull on the heartstrings, while also serving as a beautiful travel commercial for Italy.

The film begins by covering what the four friends — Vivian (Jane Fonda), Diane (Diane Keaton), Sharon (Candice Bergen), and Carol (Mary Steenburgen) — have been up to during the initial pandemic lockdown.

Jane Fonda Recalls Evening Tour of Sistine Chapel While Shooting ‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ in Italy
Image
From riding boats in Venice to landing in Tuscany in a helicopter, “Book Club: The Next Chapter” star Jane Fonda had quite the adventure in Italy with Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen.

Her favorite memory there? “When we went to see the Sistine Chapel at night, and there was nobody else there,” Fonda told Variety at the New York premiere on Monday night. “And we had the whole ceiling explained to us by a great guide. That was a real treat.”

Although the sequel was filmed nearly five years after the original, Fonda never lost contact with her “Book Club” co-stars.

“We’ve seen each other ever since we made the first movie,” Fonda said. “We go to each other’s houses for dinner, we text each other, we email each other, we do Zoom together. It’s not like we were apart and then suddenly reunited.”

Box office preview: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will tower over Mother’s Day weekend
Image
A few new titles open this weekend, some quite moderately, in the hopes of offering something unique to rival “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Remember, it’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, where the moms get to pick the movie for once. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Regardless of the number of new entries this weekend, Marvel’s “Guardians,” directed by James Gunn, will remain above the rest with a second weekend of around $50 million or more, capitalizing on positive word-of-mouth from audiences from its opening.

Released by Focus Features into 3,000 theaters is the comedy sequel “Book Club: The Next Chapter,” once again starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candace Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, along with Andy Garcia, Don Johnson and Craig T. Nelson. In the movie, once again written and directed by Bill Holderman and Erin Simms, Bergen’s Sharon is getting married, and her...

Box Office: ‘Book Club 2’ Targets $10 Million Debut, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ to Rule Again
Image
Moms, it’s time to swap the paperback copy of “Normal People” for a movie ticket. “Book Club: The Next Chapter” opens on the big screen this weekend, and the sequel to 2018’s sleeper-hit septuagenarian comedy is expected to earn $7 million to $10 million from 3,507 North American theaters in its debut.

Focus Features is hoping the film, which reunites the core group of readers in Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, will bring out the same crowd of older females that powered the first “Book Club” to $68 million domestically and $104 million globally. The original, which was released by Paramount, debuted to $13.5 million.

The $20 million-budgeted sequel faces a tougher theatrical landscape than the first, with older audiences more reluctant to go to the movies because of the pandemic. But given the built-in awareness that benefits second films in a franchise, it’s surprising that “Book Club 2” is tracking below Paramount’s “80 for Brady,...

Book Club: The Next Chapter – Review
Image
So this Summer movie season is fully upon us as we get yet another example of a staple of the warmer months, mainly the other “s” word, the sequel. Sure we expect it with the big “franchise” flicks like last weekend’s MCU blockbuster. However, this one expands on a rather modest “niche” comedy that found a very receptive audience five years ago. They are probably eager to revisit their old friends, but the story needs a “hook” to increase that fan base. For this, the producers harkened back to sequel ideas of the past in which the familiar face would be in new locations (think Gidget Goes Hawaiian or Tarzan Goes To India). Hey, it works for the more recent series of The Trip flicks. And like that comic duo, this quartet is packing their bags in Book Club: The Next Chapter.

After a brief “flash-forward” (just a hint...

‘Book Club 2’ Stars Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen Adore Each Other On-Screen and Off: ‘I Feel Like I Know Her Throughout Time’ (Video)
Image
You put four seasoned superstars together in one film, point a camera at them and turn them loose in Italy and you can bet there will be plenty of fun to be had both on that camera and off it. And that’s exactly what happened when Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen and Diane Keaton reunited for “Book Club: The Next Chapter.” Watching the film, you can see the connection these women have, which makes one wonder, are they acting or are they members of a mutual admiration society behind the scenes? TheWrap got the answer rather quickly when we sat down with Fonda and Steenburgen.

“I’m in love with her, and I’m sure it’s quite obvious,” Steenburgen said, shooting Fonda a smile.

“We like each other a lot,” Fonda responded with a laugh. “I feel one of the greatest things for me about ‘Book Club...

Jane Fonda, ‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Team Talk Making Films for Older Actors
Image
Hollywood icons Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen took to the baby blue carpet in New York City on Monday to celebrate the premiere of their upcoming movie Book Club: The Next Chapter.

“I never thought when I was like in my 20s or 30s that, at almost 86, I would still be doing this,” Fonda tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It feels pretty great.”

Despite there not being as many projects focusing on older people, director and co-writer Bill Holderman says he loves seeing these actors and actresses onscreen, so he doesn’t understand why there aren’t more movies and TV shows about them.

“They, to me, they’re some of the most inspiring people on the planet, these four women,” he tells THR. “But it’s also it’s like, they’re great actors. Why wouldn’t you use the talent that we have?”

Co-writer Erin Simms echoes that statement,...

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Review: You’re Going to Need a Lot of Wine to Enjoy This Sloppy Sequel
Image
In 2018, when Bill Holderman’s directorial debut “Book Club” first hit the big screen, this writer wondered — not entirely facetiously — how high the amiable comedy’s white wine budget must have been. After all, most of the action of the star-studded feature unfolded in cozy living rooms and swanky hotels (read: sets on top of sets), with many of these locales being positively sloshed on, over, and under with light libations.

For its sequel, Holderman and his crackling cast — including returning stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen — have allegedly leveled up, taking their booze-swilling and truth-talking foursome on the road for a whirlwind trip to Italy. The Prosecco budget? High! The rest of it? Well, despite claims that the production decamped to Italy for over two months, even the glitziest parts of “Book Club: The Next Chapter” look as if they were filmed on location at glamorous Caesar’s Palace.

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Review: A Moderately Engaging Sequel That Should Have Been Funnier
Bill Holderman
If the opening sequence of Bill Holderman’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” is any indication we might have officially turned the page on psychological “lockdown despair” narratives and entered the (somewhat cringey) era of lighthearted “lockdown nostalgia.”

That’s what the leading ladies of 2018’s lovely, if not a tad underwhelming, friendship comedy “Book Club” signal in the sequel’s opening moments, reuniting for a similarly boozy and moderately engaging adventure soaked in deep Italian reds, but not enough laughs.

It’s probably easy to feel a little nostalgic for the days of lockdown. Halcyon days for those who were financially privileged, healthy and could afford to take up new interests during that low-key downtime, like pickling, playing the accordion or caring for a new pet parrot. The fabulous (and evidently wealthy) quartet consisting of Jane Fonda’s perennially independent Vivian, Mary Steenburgen’s fretting Carol, Diane Keaton’s...

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Review: Keaton, Fonda, Bergen, And Steenburgen Head To Italy In Crowd Pleaser For Older Moviegoers Looking For An Alternative
Image
Focus Features has the right idea in releasing the new sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter just in time for Mother’s Day. Reuniting four genuine movie icons – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen – whose first film in this senior franchise, 2017’s Book Club, was a surprise hit making over $100 million worldwide, there was proof positive that older female audience was eager for a night or matinee out at the multiplex if the idea and cast were right. Since then the pandemic hit and changed moviegoing habits for the older crowd, a group that is hard to get back into theatres (although not impossible – witness The Lost City and Ticket To Paradise). My guess is that with this quartet back in fine form, and now all over 70 (!), this could again play with the usual Hollywood conceit that women of a certain age are not boxoffice. Throw in Italy...

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ Review: Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda in an Affectionate But Strained Romp
Image
Signed, sealed and delivered, Book Club: The Next Chapter is an unabashed love letter to four great movie stars. As a vehicle for their talents, it’s less of a sure thing. If you can see past the clunky plot contrivances, strained hijinks and one-liners that don’t land, and focus on the Italy-set comedy’s Mediterranean glow and the dazzling quartet of go-getters at its center, the movie might fit the bill as a celebratory pairing with Mother’s Day brunch.

The tagline on the key art encapsulates the sequel’s problems: “Slightly Scandalous. Totally Fabulous.” That qualifying “slightly” signals the softer cadence of this reunion. In the 2018 hit, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen transcended the often tepid humor with their rat-a-tat delivery; here, returning director Bill Holderman, again working from a screenplay he wrote with Erin Simms, struggles to find a rhythm, and flat...

Book Club: The Next Chapter Review: Celebrating Travel As a Key for Unlocking the Self
The Alchemist
Since Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist came out in 1988, it’s obtained an almost apocryphal status that it’s bound to never outgrow. The book, which concerns an Andalusian shepherd on a journey to find out what his destiny is, has been acclaimed less as a gift of great literature than as a fount of self-help. Given that it’s an affirming and, especially, digestible tale of discovery and hope, it makes for an apt early reference point for Bill Holderman’s Book Club: The Next Chapter: Though its main characters don’t carry on an official reading series in this sequel, each points to Coelho’s book as something of a north star in their lives.

The film is cinema as affirmation, asking us to think of it as a ticket to a far-flung locale, where love might be birthed alongside conversations with good friends about innocuous barriers that we pretend are insurmountable.

While twenty-somethings remain Hollywood’s hottest ticket in town, there’s nothing like when silver-screen legends shine like diamonds on the big screen. Focus Features debuted its Book Club: The Next Chapter trailer, showing what happens when four friends escape to Italy for food, fun, and plenty of frisky business.

Bill Holderman returns to direct from a script he co-wrote with Erin Simms. Book Club: The Next Chapter is the surprise sequel to 2018’s Book Club, also directed and co-written by Holderman and Simms. As you can see from today’s Book Club: The Next Chapter trailer, the sequel finds Mary Steenburgen, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Candice Bergen taking Italy by storm, and getting into trouble in the process.

In the Book Club: The Next Chapter trailer, Fonda’s Vivian reveals she’s engaged to Arthur (Don Johnson), which means the girls need to throw a bachelorette party in an exotic place.

‘The Last Ridge’: ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Backer Argent, ‘Nine Days’ Producer Mandalay & ‘Book Club’ Writer-Director Bill Holderman Team For WWII Pic About 10th Mountain Division
Bill Holderman
Exclusive: Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent Pictures, Nine Days producer Mandalay Pictures and Book Club writer-director Bill Holderman are teaming up on a feature adaptation of WWII tale The Last Ridge about the 10th Mountain Division, a troop of U.S. expats-turned-soldiers who helped turn the tide against the Nazis in Europe.

Holderman will adapt McKay Jenkins’ non-fiction book which charts a remarkable true story. When World War II broke out in Europe, the American army had no specialized division of mountain soldiers. That changed after an amateur skier named Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole convinced the U.S. Army to let him recruit an extraordinary assortment of expats, wealthy ski bums, mountaineers, and thrill-seekers and form them into a band of Alpine soldiers.

The group included the Sierra Club’s David Brower, Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, and Aspen Skiing Corporation founder Friedl Pfeifer.

The men endured nearly three years of gruelling training in the Colorado Rockies and forged 10th Mountain Division which finally faced combat in the winter of 1945 in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, against the seemingly unbreakable German fortifications north of the Gothic Line. There, they planned and executed one of the most daring nighttime mountain attacks in U.S. military history, smashing a linchpin of the German army’s lines.

Argent’s Jill Ahrens, Ryan Ahrens and Ben Renzo, and Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman will produce the film with Holderman and Erin Simms of their banner Apartment Story. Executive producers are Argent partners Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Michael Finley, and Derrick Brooks with co-executive producers Eric Bromberg and Stephen Michael.

Argent’s Ryan Ahrens said, “Very few details about the U.S. Army’s elite 10th Mountain Division have been introduced to the generations that followed WWII. This story is long overdue, so we’re happy to be entrusted with the source material to tell a cinematic story depicting the courage, sacrifice and heroism of this group of men.”

Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman added, “I have had a very strong desire and passion to help tell the story of the heroes that made up the 10th Mountain Division ever since I first learned about them and their bravery while a teenager who often visited Colorado with my family growing up. Bill Holderman and I have been talking about this incredible true story since the first day we met at the Sundance Intsitute Labs back in 2014. It is so exciting to collaborate with my close friends and partners at Argent, Jill, Ryan and Ben, to bring this project to life with Bill and Erin.”

Holderman, well known for hit 2018 comedy Book Club, which took more than $100M, and Bill Bryson story A Walk In The Woods, commented, “This is one of the great untold stories in American history and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Jason, Jill, Ryan, Ben and of course, my partner in crime, Erin, to bring this harrowing and triumphant tale to the masses.”

He quipped, “Following on the heels of Book Club, I feel like I’m pigeon-holing myself but those are worries for another day…”

American Made and Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent recently finished shooting Good Joe Bell with Mark Wahlberg and Connie Britton. Recent Mandalay films include Edson Oda’s Sundance hit Nine Days, which was picked up by Sony Classics, and upcoming Netflix original The Last Days Of American Crime with Edgar Ramirez.

The project marks the fourth collaboration between Argent and Mandalay Pictures in the last year following Netflix’s Uncorked, Fox Sports boxing story They Fight and upcoming horror-comedy Bride And Doom.

Holderman is represented by Wme and Paul Hastings.

‘The Favourite’, ‘Bumblebee’ Among 2018 Films To Get ReFrame Stamp
ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.

The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).

The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

“While 2017 saw an uptick in films directed by women,...

ReFrame, IMDBPro Announce 20 Certified Gender-Balanced Films
The ReFrame coalition of industry leaders and IMDBPro have unveiled 20 movies certified as gender-balanced productions among the top 100 box office films released in 2018.

The list includes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Paramount Pictures’ “Bumblebee,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “The Favourite,” Stx’s “I Feel Pretty,” Lionsgate’s “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” and Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians.”

ReFrame, founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, launched the data initiative last June in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. It said Wednesday that the increase in recipients of the ReFrame Stamp from 12 in 2017 to 20 stemmed from gains in the roles of department heads and women-of-color leads and co-leads. Still, the report noted that there remained shortfalls in several key areas.

“This positive news within the top 100 films is offset by the significant discrepancy in female hires with...

Podtalk: Filmmakers Bill Holderman & Erin Simms Join ‘Book Club’
Chicago – If your impression of a book club is one of staid pseudo-intellectuals creating pithy symbolism out of nothingness, then your impression is about to change. Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star in the new comedy “Book Club,” co-written by Erin Simms and director Bill Holderman.

The awesome foursome – all nominated for Oscars at one point, with three winners – portray members of the title activity, which has been together for 40 years. When Vivian (Jane Fonda) brings in the book “Fifty Shades of Grey,” it titillates and upends the lives of the other club members. Sharon (Candice Bergen), a Federal Judge, begins to look for love again after many years on the sidelines. Diane (Diane Keaton) is a retired widow, but finds her engines revved by a handsome pilot (Andy Garcia). Carol is a chef and wife to Bruce (Craig T. Nelson), and wants to ignite the fire in her marriage again,...

‘Deadpool 2’ Shoots to $18.6 Million at Thursday Box Office, Smashing Record for R-Rated Film
Josh Brolin, Ryan Reynolds, Terry Crews, Bill Skarsgård, Leslie Uggams, Morena Baccarin, Lewis Tan, Stefan Kapicic, Rob Delaney, Shioli Kutsuna, Zazie Beetz, and Brianna Hildebrand in Deadpool 2 (2018)
“Deadpool 2” shot to $18.6 million at the Thursday box office, surpassing its predecessor which earned $12.7 million in previews two years ago.

The sequel also broke the R-rated Thursday box office record that was previously held by “It.” The horror film grossed $13.5 million last September in previews.

Independent trackers expect the film to at least match the $132 million opening weekend scored by the first “Deadpool” in 2016, which was then a record for February releases.

‘Book Club’: How Robert Redford’s Former Producers Made the Rare Rom-Com About Women Over 65
Bill Holderman
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.

There are four leading ladies in Bill Holderman’s directorial debut, “Book Club,” and each of them get equal time to explore burgeoning new romances that light up their individual lives (and that are further enlivened by the introduction of E.L. James’ steamy “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy to the eponymous book club). It’s cute idea, but it’s also one that’s quietly revelatory: each of the film’s stars is over the age of 65. Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, Candice Bergen, and Diane Keaton all play long-time best pals trying to squeeze some life out of their waning years. The lesson, of course, is that they’ve gotten plenty more to do, no matter the number of candles on their birthday cake.

Romantic comedies have sputtered out in the studio world over the past...

Book Club movie review: Reading between the sheets
Book Club is this week’s counterprogramming offering against the summer superhero tentpoles, but it’s actually good for everybody. It’s got positive messages for both men and women, senior and junior. Vivian (Jane Fonda), Sharon (Candice Bergen), Carol (Mary Steenburgen) and Diane (Diane Keaton) have kept their book club going for decades. Each at various stages in their romantic lives, the books they read inform their love lives. Getting these four actors together is comic gold, and the script by Erin Simms and director Bill Holderman gives them sophisticated material. If you’re wondering how highbrow it is, there are Werner Herzog […]

Peter Bart: Why Has Female Empowerment Led To So Many Downer Roles For Women?
Peter Bart
The #MeToo movement notwithstanding, I’ve been worried about women lately, perhaps because I’ve been seeing too many movies. At a time when women are achieving more muscle in managing their lives and careers, the female characters they portray in movies lack both muscle and self-esteem. Women need a movement – any sort of movement. They also need help at the box office.

Let’s start with Melissa McCarthy, Charlize Theron and Amy Schumer. In Spy, McCarthy three years ago displayed hilariously lethal skills, but in her new Life of the Party she’s a mopey mom whose daughter is embarrassed by her and whose husband dumps her. Meanwhile, Theron, the delectably homicidal heroine of Atomic Blonde, becomes a downbeat, defeated housewife in Tully. Schumer, who devours men in Trainwreck, is dopey and delusional in I Feel Pretty, cast as a woman whose self-esteem is tied to her (imagined) svelte figure.

'Book Club' Review: Four Screen Legends, 'Fifty Shades' and One Really Bad Movie
E.L. James
Four female friends think they can spice up their book club, and maybe their love lives, by wallowing in the kinky prose of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey. That's the premise of this life-after-60 comedy, and there's not a doubt in the world that it's a pleasure to bask in the company of the four lead actresses – Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. Until, that is, you see what debuting director Bill Holderman and his cowriter Erin Simms have concocted for this quartet of greats.
