Psst! Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky would make Emmys history with a third writing win for ‘Hacks’
Image
Who's ready for a little Emmys history lesson?

If Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky were to win Best Comedy Writing this year they would enter the Emmy record books as the women with the most wins for writing a single narrative series. They're nominated for the penultimate episode of Hacks Season 4, titled "A Slippery Slope."

With four Emmy nominations, Aniello and Statsky have already tied Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Diane English (Murphy Brown) for the most bids for a woman in the Best Comedy Writing category. To date, Aniello, Statsky, Fey and Anne Flett-Giordano (Frasier) are the only women to prevail twice for a comedy; Fey has a third writing win under her belt for the variety program Saturday Night Live. For dramas, Robin Green (The Sopranos) holds the record for a single series for a female writer, with six noms and two wins.

Jay-Z vs. Beyoncé, Emmy Firsts for ‘American Graffiti’ Stars Ron Howard and Harrison Ford — and More Trivia From 2025’s Nominations
Image
Jay-Z and Beyoncé are the Emmys’ “’25 Bonnie and Clyde.” Let’s just hope the power couple stays Drunk in Love even after this year’s competition, where they’re competitors in the outstanding variety special (live) category.

Jay-Z, under his real name Shawn Carter, is among the executive producers nominated for Fox’s “The Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar,” which earned four nods total. Beyoncé is up for Netflix’s “Beyoncé Bowl” as executive producer and performer (billed as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter); that Christmas event also landed four nods.

Perhaps Jesse Collins can keep the peace. Not only is Jesse Collins Entertainment once again producing this year’s Emmy telecast, but the company was part of both the Kendrick Lamar halftime show and the Beyoncé event. On Emmy night in the production truck, Collins is likely to face 99 problems — hopefully this isn’t one.

That’s...

Best Comedy Writing Emmy predictions: Why ‘The Bear’ could miss the cut
Image
With 94 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Writing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

As expected, there are many single submissions from many of these front-runners, with no series entering more than two installments. But what may come as a surprise is the number of writers credited for scripting each episode — The Studio, for instance, has five writers for its entry. This, of course, does not matter in terms of voting, as writers are not listed on the ballot, but it’s an interesting side note to see how many scribes it takes to make people laugh.

This is a category that often defies conventional wisdom. Voters often gravitate towards shows that are less represented, such as last year when the branch nominated two canceled programs over others that were nominated for Best Comedy Series.

While there are often surprises here, this year the reigning champion,...

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ cast on alternate series finale endings and the parody that didn’t work
Image
The cast of What We Do in the Shadows was visibly sad when they realized they may be all together for the last time, appearing on stage at Disney FYC Fest at the DGA Theater. But as the sixth and final season of the FX series demonstrated — as well as a slew of alternate endings they screened at the panel — they've gotten pretty good at handling goodbyes.

Showrunner Paul Simms, who parodied the famous finale moments in The Usual Suspects, Rosemary’s Baby, and Newhart in the alternate endings, revealed the additional iconic last-moments reference they were really trying to make happen but couldn't make work.

"The one we talked about most besides these was the ending of M*A*S*H, where he leaves in the helicopter and he spelled out 'Goodbye' in the rocks," Simms said. "We thought, budget-wise, how would we do that? Then for a while we...

Image
“Adolescence” was the big winner at the Gotham Television Awards, taking home three prizes, including breakthrough limited series, on Monday night.

Seth Rogen’s “The Studio” won breakthrough comedy series, and “The Pitt” won best drama.

The actors, directors, writers and producers feted at the ceremony, hosted at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street, emphasized the need to preserve and protect the entertainment industry amid geopolitical strife and AI fears.

“We love this business,” said Amy Sherman-Palladino, accepting the Creator Tribute alongside her husband Daniel Palladino. “God please help everybody. Let’s make it survive.”

“Let’s keep the arts alive!” shouted an enthusiastic Parker Posey. “Let’s turn this business into entertainment that everyone can love. That old people and young people and even babies laugh at!”

Posey, who was honored with the Legend Tribute, was introduced by her “White Lotus” co-stars Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell, who took...

Five Great Sitcoms with Truly Terrible Final Seasons
Image
Plenty of sitcoms jump the shark. Sometimes the cast loses a key character or the writers run out of ideas. But perhaps the most frustrating foil is when a sitcom is solid all the way through only to shit the bed for its final season, tarnishing its legacy for all time.

If only these five shows had gotten out a year earlier, we could binge rewatch them without that looming sense of dread.

1 Roseanne

Roseanne is probably the most famous example of this, as the final season undermined the basic premise of the show. The whole idea behind Roseanne was that it was a show about a struggling blue-collar family in the Midwest and its best episodes often dealt with the Conners’ money troubles. So, in the final season, what do they do? The Conners win the lottery, eliminating their relatability.

The show also had its most beloved character, John Goodman’s Dan Conner,...

Bill Lawrence On The Importance Of Mentoring Young Writers, Or “People Who Will Give Me My Last Job When I Am Un-Hirable,” As He Accepts WGA East Award
Image
“The best thing about Hollywood, other than, obviously, award shows, is that all of us got in the door because someone believed in us,” said Bill Lawrence, accepting the WGA East Herb Sergeant Award in New York tonight, urging the assembled to “go out and find a young person to believe in.”

“Give an hour of your time to someone every month. In the worst case, you get to talk about yourself for an hour,” said the creator of Scrubs, which has a reboot in development, and Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso, eyeing a fourth season. His long list of credits also includes Apple’s Shrinking and Bad Monkey, Spin City and Cougar Town. He was, however, quite serious, devoting his acceptance speech to helping the next generation of writers, especially in a new landscape of small writing staffs, and young writers jumping from show to show. It’s never been harder.

‘English Teacher’ Renewed for Season 2 at FX
Image
“English Teacher,” one of the buzziest comedies of the 2024 television season, will officially be coming back for Season 2. The 10-episode installment is expected to premiere in 2025.

“‘English Teacher’ was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said in a Friday statement. “We look forward to the new season.”

Created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, “English Teacher” follows Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas. Most of the series revolves around Evan grandstanding, often about his liberal beliefs, only to be defeated time and time again by his own ego and short-sightedness. As he navigates his relationships with his friends, co-workers, students and on-again, off-again boyfriend, the series asks, “Can you really be your full self at your job?”

In addition to Alvarez, “English Teacher” stars Stephanie Koenig,...

Brian Jordan Alvarez in English Teacher (2024)
The FX comedy series “English Teacher” has been renewed for Season 2, Variety has learned.

The series originally debuted on FX and Hulu back in September 2024 to positive reviews. Brian Jordan Alvarez created the series and also stars. Along with Alvarez, the cast includes Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher.

The news comes following sexual assault allegations against Alvarez made by Jon Ebeling, his former friend and co-star from “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo,” a 2016 webseries Alvarez produced and starred in. Quick LinksHumble Comedy Beginnings Gave A Foothold For A FilmWhat We Do In The Shadows Takes Over Festival BuzzWithout The Film, The Series Would Have Never Taken-off

It isn't out of the ordinary for large movies to spawn spinoff TV series in the same way a sequel movie would happen. The Avengers helped create Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Krypton was originally planned as a spinoff of Man of Steel, and more recently The Batman spawned the hit series The Penguin. Yet, one of the most popular TV series 2020s was created because of a hilarious indie film.

In 2014, a couple of Kiwi Directors made a truly funny film, which turned into the show people love today. What We Do In The Shadows has only recently ended with great fanfare and adulation from both its cast and creators as well as its adoring fans. Before this absolute...

WGA Awards Nominations Revealed
Image
Anora, Challengers, A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys and Wicked are among the feature film screenplay nominees for the 77th annual Writers Guild Awards, which revealed its nominees Wednesday to honor the year’s best in film, TV, new media, news, radio and promotional writing.

Winners will be announced February 15 during concurrent ceremonies in New York at the Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.

Today’s nomination comes after the WGA delayed its announcements from last week due to the impact of the devastating wildfires across Los Angeles last week. Several groups delayed their noms announcements in order to extend voting deadlines including the Oscars.

Last year’s WGA Awards saw The Holdovers and American Fiction win the top film awards at the strike-delayed ceremony, which came after the Oscars were handed out and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay.

The Writers Guild Award nominations have room for Hit Man, Challengers

A lot of great movies, actors, and screenplays fall through the cracks during awards season as the Oscars race typically narrows to a handful of expected nominees. That's why it's fun to see what earns attention with some of the other more niche awards bodies. The Writers Guild of America...

Why FX Canceled What We Do In The Shadows
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

As far as comedy TV shows in the last ten years go, it's hard to find one more beloved than "What We Do in the Shadows." Premiering on FX in 2019, the series was based on the movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Yet, as good as some things are, they must inevitably end.

The "What We Do in the Shadows" season 6 finale served as the series finale, with the vampires saying goodbye after more than 60 episodes and over five years on the air. The decision was made before the season started, however, so it's not as though this came as a surprise to any of the creatives involved, nor for any viewers who stay tuned into the news.

Generally speaking, the show documented the nightly exploits of vampires Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja...

Taika Waititi’s “5 Minute Idea” Which Led to Emmy Winning TV Show With Six Seasons and a Movie of the Same Name
Image
After Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s 2014 movie What We Do in the Shadows received positive response from the audience and critics, they created a TV series of the same name.

The sci-fi mockumentary drama that revolves around a vampire universe debuted on the FX network in 2019. The series, which was executive-produced by Paul Simms finally concluded with season six on December 16, 2024.

Over the years, the show became massively popular among the fans, so much so, that the creators threw in an extra episode in the last season instead of their regular 10-episode-a-season rule for their loyal fandom.

The storyline of the plot follows a group of bloodsucking roommates living in Staten Island who are exploring their semi-normal lives. The series had a good run for six seasons with 61 hilarious episodes.

As the show ended, Waititi in an...

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Finale Revels in a Silly-Brilliant Ending for a Silly-Brilliant Series
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 6, Episode 11, “The Finale.”]

Not that long ago, “What We Do in the Shadows” showrunner Paul Simms had a casual conversation with his son — one that could have easily been cast aside as the common, curious musings of a young, growing mind. Instead, it got the writer and producer thinking, once again, about the peculiar perspectives guiding his FX vampire comedy. “My son said to me, ‘You’re 56,'” Simms remembered during a past interview with IndieWire. “He’s like, ‘So you’ve lived five decades?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, more than that.’ And he goes, ‘Doesn’t it get boring?'”

“I didn’t know how to answer,” Simms said. “First, I gave the dad answer, which is there’s something interesting about each age. But then I thought back on the times of my life when I’d think, ‘This is...

“Things end. And it hurts!”

This is Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak) early in the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows, trying and failing to bring Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén) out of his grief from learning that the documentary crew that has been filming Nandor and his vampire housemates for years is packing up and going home.

10 Cameos in Popular TV Shows That Make Absolutely No Sense
Image
A well-placed cameo can take an ordinary episode of television and turn it into one that people remember forever. But occasionally, when a famous face pops up on a familiar TV show, they're so out of place that their presence is simply bizarre.

Some cameos are jarring because of the sheer size of a celebrity's star power. In other instances, it's unclear how the celebrity who is appearing connects to the series in which they're appearing. There is no shortage of glaringly out-of-place cameos in the archives of TV — but that's always necessarily a bad thing.

Nadja's Customers Kill Sofia Coppola What We Do in the Shadows — Season 4, Episode 9

Vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows has become known for its habit of frequently integrating clever celebrity cameos. Typically, these involve the casual appearance of an actor or actress who is known for portraying a vampire in other media.

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Stars & Creatives Tease Series Finale ‘Sticks the Landing’ (Video)
Image
The end is nigh for the Staten Island vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proskch) and their human pal Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) as FX‘s What We Do in the Shadows prepares to present its series finale episode on Monday, December 16th. In anticipation of the show’s ending, TV Insider caught up with stars Novak, Guillén, Berry, and Proksch alongside creatives Paul Simms, Sarah Naftalis, and Sam Johnson in our studio at New York Comic Con to discuss the final season. So, do they stick the landing? It’s a question that looms over the show as we anticipate the finale episode, but according to Proksch, they do indeed. @Mattdoylephoto “I think it’s hard on a comedy, based on history, to stick the landing,” Proksch says in the video interview, above. “But I feel like we accomplish that.” It...

For Season 6, ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Had to Dress Over 200 Vampires in Brooklyn
Image
Prep school vampires. Bronx bomber vampires. CitiBike vampires. JFK Tsa vampires. “What We Do in the Shadows” isn’t leaving any New York (or vampire) subculture behind in Season 6; this in turn has given costume designer Laura Montgomery the gift of delivering new twists for the FX series’ final run around Staten Island.

The biggest lift of the season was probably Episode 9, “Come Out and Play,” the show’s loving tribute to “The Warriors” and confirmation of the hidden, evil agenda of every Brooklyn barista/artist-and-writer vampire. Montgomery and her team needed to dress the episode’s huge background cast with enough distinctiveness that each group read quickly and comedically as part of the show’s quick-panning, constantly readjusting mockumentary style.

“The show is 22 minutes long and [the costumes are] purely a visual gag when you’re calling out all these vampires,” Montgomery told IndieWire. “Because we had to dress crew, [we had] Location Support On Camera vampires,...

What We Do in the Shadows Star Reveals BTS Reaction to Surprising True Blood Cameo
Image
What We Do in the Shadows star Doug Jones discusses his reaction to meeting True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård on set.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Jones opened up about the experience of meeting Alexander Skarsgård — who played the vampire Eric Northman on True Blood — on set for a surprise appearance in an episode of the final season of What We Do in the Shadows. Jones noted that he was "tickled pink that we were going to get a pretty stormy vampire to show up in our goofy comedy show." Jones continued, "And when he walked onto the set, he was, like, 6'5", he's a little taller than me, and strappingly handsome, and everybody's going like, ‘[In awe] Oh.’ But he pulled the funny out in a way that we did not expect, I didn't expect. So, getting to banter back and forth with him was delicious for me."

Golden Globe odds update: Brian Jordan Alvarez (‘English Teacher’) skyrockets in predictions
Image
The Best TV Comedy Actor race at the 2025 Golden Globes looks to be getting some fresh blood in the form of Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”). He plays Evan Marquez on FX’s freshman comedy series that takes place at the fictional Morrison-Hensley High School. Alvarez has skyrocketed up to fifth place to win this category, compared to two months ago when he placed outside of Gold Derby’s predicted nominees.

Alvarez’s likely co-nominees, according to our Golden Globe predictions for Best TV Comedy Actor, are Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) at 18/5 odds, Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 9/2 odds, Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”) at 5/1 odds, Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) at 15/2 odds, and Vince Vaughn (“Bad Monkey”) at 10/1 odds.

The series stars Alvarez as a high school instructor who finds himself at a crossroads in his life while working as the titular “English Teacher.” Other...

3 Reasons Why “What We Do in the Shadows” Ending After Season 6 Is Probably Not That Bad
Image
The final season of What We Do In The Shadows began airing earlier this month. The vampires of Staten Island are all set to get an ending to their arcs (though probably not their lives) after six seasons of fun and frolic. The FX series was based on the 2014 mockumentary film of the same name, created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement.

While a cult classic comedy film hardly made it a great contender for a series adaptation, What We Do In The Shadows hit big and received consistently good reviews from fans and critics alike as the seasons progressed. It will definitely be sad to see the fan-favorite vampires hang up their cloaks, but it may just be for the better.

The 15 Best Episodes of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’
Image
Picking the best episodes of FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” is kind of like… well, like picking your favorite character on “What We Do in the Shadows.” Or your favorite guest star. Or your favorite aspect of the series created by Jemaine Clement and based on the film he made with Taika Waititi in 2014; it’s just wrong, impossible, unnatural — like vampires themselves, some might argue.

For the IndieWire team, this masochistic exercise was born from our denial that the series from showrunner Paul Simms will end its run with Season 6, which premiered on October 21 with three episodes. Soon, fans will have seen every episode of the entire show, and that’s a milestone we dread even while feeling gratitude that “Shadows” gets to end on its own terms and a high note.

To celebrate the finale episodes and the triumph of this series, we picked 15 of...

What We Do In The Shadows' Final Season Fulfills 1 Major Goal For Showrunner: "This Is The Season"
Image
The showrunner of What We Do in the Shadows has revealed the major goal they were able to accomplish in season 6. The FX mockumentary show, which stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Mark Proksch as Staten Island-based vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson, alongside Harvey Guilln as the human familiar Guillermo, is based on the 2014 New Zealand movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. What We Do in the Shadows season 6, which premiered with three episodes on October 21, will be the final season of the show.

Screen Rant had the opportunity to sit down for an interview with What We Do in the Shadows showrunner Paul Simms to discuss season 6. He revealed that the season was not necessarily fulfilling any long-term goals because each time they develop a season, they "use up everything we have." However, for the final season they got...

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Cast and Showrunner Look Back: ‘It Was Such a Slow Burn’
Image
When the cast and showrunner of “What We Do in the Shadows” talk about their impeccable FX comedy, two words keep coming up: fancy room.

This is the formal, technical, and maybe even industry term for exactly what viewers will suspect; the ornate sitting room of the Staten Island mansion where a group of vampires gather to lounge, fight, and occasionally hypnotize a private school principal to the point of irreparable brain damage. For showrunner Paul Simms and actors Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Mark Proksch, who all gathered together for a PaleyFest panel on October 19, group scenes in the Fancy Room were among what they’ll miss most now that “Shadows” has wrapped filming.

“Those were the scenes where I’d feel probably the most nervous going in,” Novak recalled of the early seasons. “‘Oh wow, these guys, it’s gotta be good, and I can’t fuck up.
