We have already covered the greatest DC Comics ever, as well as various countdowns of the best of the best from Marvel, but let's be real for a second: the indie market has its fair share of seminal comic books too. For many readers, that's where the real magic happens, as creatives play outside of the assigned sandboxes and free from corporate oversight and meddling. The only limit here is where their imagination takes them.
But how do you pick the best comic books outside of Marvel and DC? It isn't an easy task and requires a few considerations. Ultimately, it comes down to being a mix of universally popular series and personal preference, but also analyzing the books' wider influence on pop culture. Did they lead to on-screen adaptations or video games? Did they force the industry to up its game? Those types of questions. In addition to this,...

The bearded Hulk from the Jason Aaron era of the franchise returns for an all-new Marvel game. The Hulk made his on-panel debut in May 1963's The Incredible Hulk by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and over the course of the last 62 years, his costumes and appearances have constantly evolved. Even most recently, Hulk has maintained some cool redesigns, and Marvel wants to remind fans of his most underrated.
Aipt Comics reveals that Hulk will be one of seven heroes getting their own variant covers this September for Marvel Mystic Mayhem, a new mobile exclusive video game release from NetEase Games launching on iOS and Android on June 25. While Marvel was not the first company to do swimsuit specials featuring their characters (a play on how Sports Illustrated dedicates an issue of its magazine every year to a swimsuit special), its series of Marvel Swimsuit Specials were by far the most famous examples of that approach, especially as the first such special, released in 1991, was released before Image Comics debuted, so it featured art from a number of the superstar Marvel artists who then left to form Image, including pieces by Image founders Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, and Whilce Portacio.
The final Marvel Swimsuit Special was released in 1995, but now, in the wake of DC doing its own Swimsuit Special last year, after 30 years, Marvel is returning to its Swimsuit past with a new one-shot, Marvel Swimsuit Special: Friends, Foes & Rivals #1, due out in July!

The closest we've come to a solid update on Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is a report from the trades revealing The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie is penning the screenplay.
Who knows how much has changed since then but, as far as we're aware, no director is attached and Lesslie may not even be the current writer on the project.
Despite that, the casting rumours continue coming in thick and fast. Yesterday, we shared a breakdown of the actors who are supposedly in the running for X-Men. And today, we have possible Mister Sinister casting!
According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing Dune, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skyfall star Javier Bardem to play the iconic X-Men villain in the MCU. You may recall that he was once said to be in line to play The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Galactus.

The Walking Dead introduced its fair share of iconic villains throughout its epic 193-issue run, with the foul-mouthed Negan receiving one of the bloodiest introductions of any character in the history of the comic book medium. Immediately becoming a foe fans loved to hate, Negan’s debut issue was a critical and financial success, with series creator Robert Kirkman recently revealing what record it broke and why Negan’s debut helped achieve this incredibly impressive feat.
Making his presence known in 2012’s The Walking Dead #100, Negan didn’t waste any time showing what he was about, with his profanity-spewing R-rated personality, signature barbed-wire-wrapped bat Lucille, and brutal murder of fan-favorite character Glenn, instantly making him a villain worth hating.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and, by extension, the Sony Spider-Man Universe have set itself up as a continuity where each characters' introduction feels like the definitive live-action iteration. As a result, the likes of Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man or Tom Holland's Spider-Man feel irreplaceable. That said, there were many names that embodied certain characters before, and it proved that there are many takes that help define one character. That said, some aren't appreciated until much later, such as one controversial villain from Spider-Man 3.
The behind-the-scenes history of Spider-Man 3 is just as popular as "Bully Maguire" or the shoehorned introduction of Venom in a movie that already features multiple villains. Even still, Sam Raimi's final outing in the world of Spider-Man has grown to become appreciated by fans for what it did and its unfailing ability to keep the spirit of what made the other two movies so iconic.

Emma Frost is one of the few Marvel characters who routinely change her look; being the femme fetale that she is, Emma's outfits are more than just clothes; it's part of her act. Frost dresses in the way she does, not just to be self-expressive, but to lure her allies and enemies, especially men, into believing that she's nothing less than the psychic, business-mogul, secret-society-leading mastermind she truly is.
While Frost is justifiably argued to be nothing more than eye candy for the male gaze, in her case thats exactly the point. She is a defiant self-made woman who, after rejecting her fathers fortune due to his appalling abuse toward her older brother, saw men capitalizing on the unfair advantages society had given them.
Emma emphasizes her sexuality, primarily through her clothing, both for the power of her own expression and to gain leverage over those shell inevitably take advantage of.

Wolverine is one of Marvels top characters, but according to iconic G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama, sales on his solo book were once so low that it was in danger of being canceled. The Joe scribe was then given the task of taking over the title, turning sales around until it was one of Marvels top-selling titles.
Appearing at the Wolverine: 50-Year Anniversary panel at Dragon Con 2024, Larry Hama explained how he got the job writing Wolverine. I was having trouble getting writing work at Marvel at the time, Hama said, I had the number one book in G.I. Joebut they said. G.I. Joes a fluke.
Amazingly, Marvel's brass at the time might have been wrong about Hama's G.I. Joe, but they were right to give him the opportunity to write Wolverine, which not only solidified the author's reputation as a comics maestro, but it salvaged the X-franchise's...

Wolverine is one of the most iconic heroes around and I mean both visually and characteristically. He has endured for 50 years in the comics and is now a big-screen powerhouse. He has an instantly recognisable aesthetic whether he is in costume or his street clothes. He even has the ability to change his fatigues on a regular basis and still hold that visual appeal. Sometime last year I did a round-up of his most famous costumes and highlighted some of the best artists to work on each. This is an extension of that, but looking more in-depth at what artists have contributed what visuals to Wolverine body part by body part (which sounds way dirtier than I meant it). By the end of it, I will present to you my top 5 Wolverine artists of all time. I want to preface all of what is about to follow by saying that...

Image Comics' Spawn is a record-breaking ongoing series, having ran for over 350 issues in the decades since its debut and in that time, the series has produced scores of iconic comic covers, many of which are truly stunning, unforgettable works of art. At their peak, Spawn covers represent some of the best the industry has offered in the past thirty-plus years.
In 1992, Todd McFarlane's Spawn helped lead the "Image Revolution", an era in the 1990s defined by the migration of superstar Marvel artists to their own, creator-owned company. McFarlane's demonic antihero has since achieved record-breaking success as the longest-running creator-owned comic in the industry.
Spawn has been drawn by some of the most talented artists in comics, from Greg Capullo and Brett Booth to Marc Silvestri and Phillip Tan. This is especially true when it comes to covers, where some of the biggest names in the industry have turned in vibrant and attention-grabbing art.

One of the most identifiable X-Men covers of all time is back - in a whole new universe. The beauty of comics is that artists carrying other titles can refer back to their own work in intricate or sometimes obvious nods. Right as this famous image is gaining traction again, this iconic Uncanny X-Men cover is back in this artist's homage to himself.

Chris Claremont wrote the X-Men comics from 1975 to 1991, but he could've — and would've — gone even longer. Marvel Editor Bob Harras, though, was giving more and more power to artist Jim Lee, to the point Claremont was basically just writing the dialogue for Lee's stories. After building the X-Men from the ground-up and spending a decade-plus with the characters, having his comic hijacked like that had to sting. Thus, Claremont departed after "Uncanny X-Men" #279. He's returned to the X-Men several times since, but the last stories of his unbroken run were the first three issues of the relaunched 1991 comic simply titled "X-Men."
Had Claremont stayed on, he had plans for stories at least up to "Uncanny X-Men" #300. He was building up to an arc where the malevolent psychic the Shadow King manipulates man and mutant kinds into all-out war. Claremont also wanted to permanently write out, if not kill, Professor X...

The following contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine, now playing in theaters.
Thanks to the Merc with a Mouth's ability to break the fourth wall, Deadpool & Wolverine is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most meta film so far. The movie follows Deadpool and Wolverine on an adventure in the Void to save Earth-10005 while a rogue Tva agent prunes other alternate realities. Deadpool & Wolverine's constant metatextuality made way for dozens of Marvel Easter eggs, some of which very few fans noticed.
Some of these Easter eggs are references to the comics while others are about other films or even about real life -- specifically about Ryan Reynold's career. Since Easter eggs are key ingredients of the MCU films, viewers are often looking for them, but these references in Deadpool & Wolverine are a bit obscure, so not everyone identified them quickly.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine
The invariably countless possibilities in the realm of Marvel multiverse have become a sort of safety net for the studio which hasn’t seen a single good day in the last half-decade. The situation is further exacerbated by the lack of an Avengers film, which, given the state of the MCU right now, seems like a distant dream rather than a viable prospect.
The experimental phase that lasted 5 years but felt like 50 has only gone on to deliver diminishing returns, with a ray of sunshine here and there with No Way Home and Loki on Disney+.

The fact of the matter stands, however, when one looks at the statistics. Compared to the 23 films of the Infinity Saga, the staggering 18 projects that Marvel released from January 2021 to November 2022 almost amount to the decade-long build-up of the MCU’s first three phases.

Spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine" ahead.
"Deadpool & Wolverine" has advertised itself as a multiverse adventure. It is a movie that bridges the 20th Century Fox "X-Men" movie franchise with the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- not that you need to be a Marvel super-fan to enjoy "Deadpool & Wolverine." Since there's only so many different worlds one can visit in two hours, the film has a montage of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) jumping from universe to universe and meeting many different Wolverines.
One of the Wolverines he finds is in dire straits, crucified on a Saint Andrew's cross in an apocalyptic landscape. X-fans might recognize the image from the cover of "Uncanny X-Men" #251 ("Fever Dream"), drawn by Marc Silvestri and Dan Green.

This article is the best at what it does, but what it does is spoil Deadpool & Wolverine.
When it comes to the big screen, there’s only one Wolverine and his name is Hugh Jackman. After Dougray Scott stuck shooting Mission: Impossible II for longer than anticipated and had to drop out of playing Logan in 2000’s X-Men, Jackman has owned the part. Not even a noble and beloved death in Logan can put a stop to Jackman’s reign as cinema’s premiere Canucklehead, as he dons the goofy mask and yellow duds in full for Deadpool & Wolverine.
But while Deadpool & Wolverine does further delay the inevitable recasting of Logan for the MCU, it also gives viewers a look at different types of Wolverine. Sure, these are all still Hugh Jackman—save, of course, for the one played by Henry Cavill—but at least there’s some more flavor.

Aside from Logan (Hugh Jackman) himself, "Deadpool & Wolverine" looks to be bringing back many mutant characters from 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" films. Among them is Sabretooth/Victor Creed, Wolverine's nemesis, played once more by Tyler Mane as in the 2000 "X-Men" movie. These two are eternal rivals, but why?
Chronologically, the last we saw of Sabretooth was Cyclops (James Marsden) blasting him off the Statue of Liberty. Production-wise, Creed appeared in the 2009 prequel "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (played by Liev Schreiber instead of Mane). The movie looked to fill in the (many) gaps in Logan's backstory, such as why he and Sabretooth had a blood feud.
The movie mashes up three comic stories: 1989's "Wolverine" Volume 2 issue #10 (where it's revealed Sabretooth murdered Logan's lover Silver Fox), Barry Windsor-Smith's 1991 "Weapon X" (which revealed how Wolverine got his adamantium skeleton and claws), and Paul Jenkins and Andy Kubert's 2001 "Origin" (which revealed...

Even though it’s been nearly two months since Disney+’s X-Men ’97 ended, fans are still debating what occurred in the jam-packed first season. This new iteration of X-Men continues the iconic and beloved animated series X-Men: The Animated Series that aired from 1992 to 1997. More than just a nostalgia trip, the updated series brought back many of the former creatives from the original series in order to stay true to the 1990s sensibilities but push the envelope of what a modern-day X-Men series could look like. In the Lethal Protector miniseries, Venom discovered his vulnerability to being overwhelmed by sound the hard way, when he underestimated "Z-list" villain Humbug, and was defeat with loud insect noises. Humbug's use of sound technology made him a surprisingly dangerous adversary for Venom, exposing the symbiote's most notable weakness. Even the most astute Marvel readers may not be familiar with Humbug, making him a surprising – though no less effective – adversary for Venom.
As strong as Venom is, he has two major weaknesses; both fire and noise can do significant damage to the symbiote, and this allowed one low-level villain to defeat Venom with ease. While Venom has regularly gone up against heavy-hitters like Spider-Man, and dark gods like Knull, the one villain that took Venom down with ease is one only the most hardcore Marvel fans have ever heard of.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
It takes five minutes for “Motendo” segment of the latest episode of X-Men ’97 to reveal its big bad. A stomach-churning yellow creature covered in metal appears on screen and yells, “I am Mojo, your primetime psycho inter dimensional TV producer who feeds off ratings!”
That’s actually a pretty good description for Mojo, one of the strangest Marvel villains of all time. The “Motendo” segment finds Mojo kidnapping Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (not yet taking his Sunspot moniker) and sending them into a video game. There, they battle various computerized baddies and garner praise from an audience, which in turn makes Mojo more powerful.
Unsurprisingly, the segment includes plenty of nods to the history of X-Men video games. And if you’re the type of person who got upset that the episode used a Snes portmanteau to describe a system that looked...

The Krakoan era not only took X-Men storytelling to new heights, it allowed for some breathtaking artistic accomplishments, including some of the franchise's all-time great comic book covers. Artists including Russell Dauterman, R.B. Silva, & Leinil Francis Yu helped to shape the Krakoan era into a truly ascendant period in X-history, in large part thanks to their cover work. Cover artists like Dauterman, Rod Reis, and Ivan Shavrin creatively used color, shape, and contrast to extend the stories of the Krakoan era onto their covers, and to capture the essence of their mutant protagonists.
As much as the Krakoan era has been a high point for X-Men stories, it has also given readers plenty of Omega-level art, including some truly stunning covers. Iconic artists and newly introduced talents alike fully embraced the era's creative freedom, resulting in some of the X-franchise's most memorable images.

Image Comics was formed in the 1990s by disillusioned Marvel artists who wanted greater control over their work. Cyber Force, ShadowHawk, Gen 13, The Maxx, and Stormwatch were among the top first issues from Image Comics in the 1990s. Spawn #1 was the book that put Image Comics on the map and laid the foundation for Todd McFarlane's multi-media empire.
Image Comics was formed in 1992 by seven former Marvel artists. These artists became disillusioned with Marvel, namely over the issue of creator’s rights. Image’s founders wanted fairer deals and greater control over their work. Image was revolutionary for its time in that creators would retain complete creative control over their works. Wolverine's Patch persona showcases the character's versatility and ability to fit into different tones and genres, making it one of Logan's most memorable alternate identities. Cosplayer Batsturd perfectly captures the look of Patch, with the eyepatch, slicked hair, and white suit. Logan's Patch disguise is a humorous take on superhero identity, and Batsturd offers an excellent tribute to this enduring character design.

Little good came out of "X-Men: Apocalypse." The preceding film "Days of Future Past" was meant to be a fresh start for the Merry Mutants. Instead, director Bryan Singer was exposed as creatively bankrupt; "Apocalypse" rehashes beats from Singer's previous movies like a "greatest hits" compilation. Singer always had little interest in the source material comics and "Apocalypse" showed he was out of his depth trying to make an "X-Men" movie that felt more like them.
This feeling of running on fumes, juxtaposed with a comical misuse of Oscar Isaac's talents, meant "Apocalypse" was the beginning of the end for 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies, not a new dawn. It's certainly when their spell over me ended.
The post-credits scene of "X-Men: Apocalypse" in particular is pointless. Its very inclusion was Fox taking a page from rival Marvel Studios, but the sequel set-up doesn't pay off.

This past week we lost one of the industry’s best. As Dan Green pulls his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky I look back on an amazing career. For me, Dan Green was probably the first inker I knew the name of. This comes from hunting down my back issues of Wolverine. Marc Silvestri and Adam Kubert were two of my favourites to track down issues of and Green was always the third name in the credits. Perhaps this is doing inkers a discredit. They are like drummers in rock bands in that regard. Essential to creativity but one step behind the limelight. If someone like Joe Sinnott was like the old-school drumming of Ringo Starr, then Green is more akin to the style of John Bonham. In my opinion, he was the first rock star inker.
The journey began for Dan Green in Detroit.

Wolverine’s ferocious android double Albert is back and joining the new Dark X-Men team of misfits and villains. All the best X-Men teams have a Wolverine among their ranks. And given that it’s a dark time for mutants after the massacre at the Hellfire Gala, the formation of the Dark X-Men calls for a dark Wolverine.
In an interview with Cbr, writer Steve Foxe discussed the lineup of the Dark X-Men team. Beginning in Dark X-Men #1 by Foxe and artist Jonas Scharf, Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor will be bringing together a new squad of mutants to protect a world that fears and hates them. Described as a mix of X-Men and the horror of Evil Dead, the new book will see Pryor, the ruler of Limbo, joined by antiheroes like Gambit, Archangel and Havok, along with outright villains like Azazel and Emplate. Also joining the ranks will be Albert,...

Sue Storm confronts Reed Richards about his guilt from turning Ben Grimm into the Thing, suggesting that perhaps they would all be better off without Ben. Sue believes that Ben has been intentionally tormenting Reed by reminding him of his own unhappiness, blaming him for his rocky condition. Despite the harsh words, Sue's speech is likely driven by concern for her husband and the family eventually reunites on Monster Island.
As Marvel's first family, the Fantastic Four has had plenty of fighting among its members over the years. One of the most prevalent pressure points among the group is Ben Grimm's resentment toward Reed Richards for turning him into the Thing — an act Ben has alternatively blamed and forgiven Reed for over the years. Though Reed often calls the incident his greatest mistake, the Invisible Woman has a different outlook on the event.

With the Fall of X looming, the writer of the new X-Men book Dark X-Men has teased how the title will handle its horror tone and has also given new insight into its leader, Madelyne Pryor. With the mutants of Krakoa heading into their most challenging period yet, a team like the Dark X-Men might be exactly what’s needed to save them.
In a new interview with Cbr, Dark X-Men writer Steve Foxe explains exactly how the new series will balance horror with more classic Marvel action. "I'm a fan of some pretty relentless, pitch-black horror, but this is ultimately a Marvel comic, and we don't want to leave readers too traumatized," Foxe says. "We want to shock and spine-tingle but also have those cathartic laughs and 'Did they really go there?' moments peppered throughout." The comparison made to the Evil Dead in Dark X-Men’s announcement is...

The loss of Iron Man’s father, Howard Stark, is one of the defining moments in Tony's life, but recent revelations hint that Howard could still be alive, stuck in one of the most unexpected places in the Marvel multiverse, and only the X-Men can help him. Having apparently died in a car crash when Tony was young, Howard Stark’s specter is ever-present in his son's life. Tony constantly measures himself against his father's expectations, even if Howard left behind a complicated legacy of arms dealing and neglect. The thing is, Howard Stark actually faked his own death while working for an ancient version of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Marvel never developed this story further, leaving open the question of what’s really happened to him in the years since.

With the ever-changing news of comic book writer Todd McFarlane’s iconic character Spawn receiving a live-action reboot extending as far back as 2009, fans of the Malebogia-fighting antihero continue to wait for an official trailer with bated breaths. Despite Michael Jai White’s perfect casting as Al Simmons/Spawn in the 1997 Mark A.Z. Dippé Spawn film, that particular project has gone down in history as one of the worst comic book movies ever made and as one of the worst movies ever made altogether. Nevertheless, Spawn has enjoyed a successful toy line and has been featured in various other forms of media since his 1992 creation, thus maintaining a loyal fan base.

Wolverine #32 Writer: Benamin Percy | Artist: Juan Jose Ryp | Colourist: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Cory Petit
Are we going to have to start calling this series Beast Goes Full Evil? At this point I think Benjamin Percy is the only writer I would trust to have a comic called Wolverine completely dominated by Beast and his continuing journey to the dark side. It has been going on for three issues now and it works. Beast is the center of attention in this book right now and Percy is killing it! Not to completely scare fans off, Wolverine does make a fleeting appearance in this issue in true Wolverine fashion. Barging in on the Quiet Council and telling them exactly what is what and how he is going to put things right. Though out reading this issue I did keep asking myself how and if this ties into ‘Fall of X’ or...
