‘Dark Matter’ Season 2 Filming Update: When Will the Second Season Release?
Image
Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama, Dark Matter season 2, is almost here! The first season premiered in May 2024, and since then, fans have been waiting for season 2. Thankfully, the show was renewed by Apple TV for season 2 in August 2024.

In February 2025, series creator Blake Crouch announced through his Instagram that principal photography for the next season had begun. Then again, on Aug. 1, 2025, he revealed through a video post on Instagram that filming had wrapped on Dark Matter season 2. So a potential late 2025 or early 2026 release window is possible.

Based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, and starring Joel Edgerton, the show follows Jason Dessen, a physicist who gets thrown into alternate timelines, and he has to navigate them to return to his family. With season 2, the producers want to deliver a story that gives more to viewers than what the original book did. So there might be...

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Thesy Surface on Playing the Offensively Strange Margaret McPoyle
Image
In the world of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, being a member of the McPoyle family means you’re a terrifying inbred weirdo. Yet, even in the sea of nauseating McPoyles, a good candidate for the most offensively strange is the deaf-mute Margaret McPoyle.

Played by Thesy Surface (who has neither her character’s trademark mustache nor unibrow Irl), Margaret McPoyle first appears briefly in Season Two when her brother compliments her “top-notch boobies.” She tailgates with the rest of her family early in Season Three, before wielding a shotgun at the behest of her brothers in “The Gang Gets Held Hostage.” She also first has sex with a member of The Gang, Dennis, during the same episode. Her next sexual conquest is Mac in Season Six’s “Who Got Dee Pregnant?” before making her final appearances in Seasons Eight and Eleven.

We haven’t, though, seen Margaret McPoyle in...

Bones And All (July 1) Credit – MGM

The It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Episode That Pays Homage To A Bruce Willis Movie
Image
The gang on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" tends to view the world through the lens of pop culture, and that means there are a tremendous number of references to movies and TV shows throughout the series. Charlie (Charlie Day) has dressed up as Al Pacino's Frank Serpico from "Serpico," for example, and the whole gang made several "Lethal Weapon" sequels with some questionable choices (that led to the episodes being banned from streaming), so it's clear that movies are at the forefront of their minds. In season 3, we got one of the best tributes to a movie ever in the form of "The Gang Gets Held Hostage," which pays homage to the Bruce Willis-led action classic "Die Hard."

In "The Gang Gets Held Hostage," Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Mac (Rob McElhenney), and Charlie get held hostage by the McPoyles, members of a massive inbred family who attended...

5 Essential It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Episodes Everyone Should Watch At Least Once
Image
There are a lot of truly amazing episodes of the long-running FX sitcom "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Over 16 seasons, the five miscreants known as "the gang" have gotten up to all kinds of shenanigans, with the comedy in each episode ranging from low-art nonsense like poop gags to jokes like "the implication" that are much, much darker. It can be a bit daunting to look at all of those seasons, but there are a handful of "Always Sunny" episodes that everyone should check out, whether they decide to watch the rest of the series or not. After all, it's the longest-running live-action American sitcom of all time, and it's had an impact on pop culture, even if it's somehow never won any major industry awards.

There are honestly dozens of episodes that I could recommend because the show has such a wide variety of killer episodes with some super meme-able moments.

Channing Tatum's 52% Rotten Tomatoes Action Movie With Jamie Foxx Is Streaming For Free
Image
While Channing Tatum is best loved for the Magic Mike franchise, Step Up, and his comedy roles, he also has a slew of action roles. Among them is his collaboration with Roland Emmerich, White House Down, which sees him as a US Capitol Police officer, who is in a life and death situation. The exciting feature is now available to stream for free.

Tubi has added the movie starring Tatum to its roster this month. The movie follows Tatum as a divorced police officer, who has been denied his dream job of protecting the US President as a member of the Secret Service. Not wanting to disappoint his daughter, Cale takes her on a tour of the White House. While the two are there, a heavily armed paramilitary group attacks and seizes control. Now it's up to Cale to save his daughter and the president.

Despite a thrilling premise and compelling action,...

‘Black Mirror’ VFX supervisor James MacLachlan reveals that ‘the Callister itself needed updating’ for the unprecedented sequel
Image
“What's really interesting is the breadth of what's going on,” Black Mirror visual effects supervisor James MacLachlan says of the buzzy seventh season. He adds that series creator Charlie Brooker "would pull things out of the recesses of his brain, references that were really obscure. Even to the point where we were discussing escalators in Tottenham Court Road, and how the metal shines when it catches the light." Watch our full interview above with MacLachlan joining our Gold Derby "Meet the Experts" VFX panel.

Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped on Netflix this year after a two-year break. Each episode of the anthology series takes on new characters to tell a dystopian tale of technology. However, the most recent season broke new ground with “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”

Kyra Elise Gardner
Slay: Zoey Luna, Aya Cash, Shawnee Smith, & more star in horror dramedy from Kyra Elise Gardner and Jimmi Simpson
Kyra Elise Gardner
A couple of years ago, Kyra Elise Gardner – who happens to be the daughter of special effects artist and puppeteer Tony Gardner, who has been bringing killer doll Chucky (and Tiffany and Glen) to life for the last twenty years – took viewers on a journey through the Child’s Play franchise with the documentary Living With Chucky. Now, Deadline reports that Gardner has made her scripted feature directorial debut with the horror dramedy Slay, which also happens to be the feature writing debut of actor Jimmi Simpson.

Zoey Luna (The Craft: Legacy) and Aya Cash (The Boys) star in the film, which recently wrapped production. The story centers on seven high school seniors whose weekend of backstabbing turns literal. Of Course Liam McPoyle From ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Wrote A Movie About Stabbing
Image
Fan-favorite It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia guest star Jimmi Simpson is making his scripted feature screenwriting debut with a horror-dramedy called Slay — hopefully it will be as terrifyingly funny as the time when he gave the Gang Stockholm Syndrome.

Beyond his recurring role as one-half of the incestual and sweaty McPoyle brothers on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Simpson is one of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood, whose lengthy list of IMDb credits is only dwarfed by Danny DeVito when it comes to the central Always Sunny cast. With so much experience in TV and film, the Westworld, Black Mirror and House of Cards star inevitably had to try his hand at some behind-the-camera work, choosing to write his first feature film about a topic he knows well from his Always Sunny days: getting stabbed.

According to Deadline, Simpson’s project Slay, which just wrapped filming this week, will tell...

Director Kyra Elise Gardner — daughter of special effects legend Tony Gardner — has wrapped production on Slay, Deadline reports.

Written by actor Jimmi Simpson, the horror dramedy follows seven high school seniors whose weekend of backstabbing turns literal.

“I wrote Slay about that moment in adolescence where you realize your friends know how to hurt you better than anyone else,” Simpson told Deadline. “Slay lives right there— but with sick music, jokes and stabbings.”

‘I didn’t think he was a jerk’: Paul Giamatti on finding the humanity in his standout ‘Black Mirror’ episode
Image
The only formula for Black Mirror is that there isn’t one. “Eulogy,” the fifth episode of the current season, is essentially an hour-long solo performance by Paul Giamatti. Though he does have a costar in Patsy Ferran, he holds the screen himself for nearly the full hour, acting opposite an avatar (spoiler alert!) as a middle-aged man named Phillip coming to terms to terms with long-buried memories of a lost love.

What’s first presented as a simple ask to collect memories soon reveals itself to be a far deeper, more emotional journey, led by Ferran’s “The Guide” through — and into — old photographs. And it takes an actor of Giamatti’s caliber — with accolades from the Oscars, the Emmys, the Globes, BAFTAs, SAGs, and more — to keep us riveted.

Here, Giamatti tells Gold Derby why he empathizes with Phillip, why he likes playing bad guys, and why he...

Minha Kim, Anna Sawai, Jimmi Simpson and all the ‘Pachinko’ actors submitted for Emmy ballot
Image
Pachinko is hoping for better luck the second time around at the Emmys.

Based on Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel, the critically adored epic Apple TV+ series, which follows four generations of a Korean family, is submitting six of its ensemble for acting categories, Gold Derby has learned.

Jin Ha (Solomon Baek) and Lee Min-ho (Koh Hansu) will be entered in for Best Drama Actor; Minha Kim (young Sunja) for Drama Actress; Youn Yuh-jung (elder Sunja) and Anna Sawai (Naomi) for Drama Supporting Actress; and Jimmi Simpson (Tom Andrews) for Drama Supporting Actor.

(As Gold Derby previously reported, Netflix is submitting Simpson for Limited Series/Movie Supporting Actor for the “USS Callister: Into Infinity” installment of Black Mirror. Sawai, meanwhile, won Best Drama Actress last year for her role in Shōgun.)

Based on our latest odds, Pachinko is on the outside looking in regarding the major Emmy races. The...

Netflix will submit eight cast members from Black Mirror for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has learned.

Paul Giamatti and Chris O'Dowd will be submitted for Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Rashida Jones will be submitted for Limited Series/TV Movie Actress.

Jimmi Simpson who stepped back into the role of Walton for Black Mirror's "USS Callister: Into Infinity," the sequel to the Emmy-winning episode that originally aired in 2017, will be submitted for Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor. Likewise, his costar Cristin Milioti, who similarly reprised her role for "Into Infinity," is being submitted as Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress. The decision would potentially make her eligible for two Emmy nominations, since she is planning on going in the lead category for The Penguin.

A Casting Director Once Told Charlie Day That He’ll Never Work in Comedy
Image
If Charlie Day had listened to his worst critics, he never would have begun a career in TV comedy, and Paddy’s Pub would have closed down after its very first health inspection.

Today, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and producer is one of the most celebrated comedic actors on television, but like most great artists, Day took his share of lumps during his climb to the mountaintop. After graduating from Merrimack College with an art history degree, Day moved to New York City to test out his performing talents on its competitive comedy scene, often acting in sketches alongside his future Always Sunny collaborators David Hornsby and Jimmi Simpson. Then, when Rob McElhenney recruited him to shoot a shoestring budget pilot about a bunch of a-holes living in Philadelphia and running a bar together, Day’s comedy career took off into the sitcom stratosphere where he has...

Jimmi Simpson on the Wild Chaos of Making ‘Black Mirror’ Sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity”
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the Black Mirror season seven sequel “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”]

Making Black Mirror‘s first-ever sequel was a wild ride. Jimmi Simpson, one of almost all of the returning actors who came back for the season seven episode, likens it to “an artistic battalion.”

“It was chaotic, but everybody was up for it,” he says of returning to play his character, Walton, who is now running tech company Infinity in “USS Callister: Into Infinity” after the death of former CEO Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) in the first film. The 90-minute sequel — which was at first set to be a series — reunited Simpson with co-star Cristin Milioti and gave him the chance to act opposite her not only in the real world but also as their in-game characters (who Simpson describes as his Caveman Walton and Spaceman Walton) as they voyage on another adventure to save themselves inside the immersive game.

Why Michaela Coel Didn't Return For Black Mirror's USS Callister Sequel Episode
Image
Although "USS Callister: Into Infinity" takes place only a few weeks after the original "USS Callister" episode ended, in real life, almost seven years have passed for the actors involved. The season 7 episode does an admirable job covering up the signs of time, but there was one hiccup that prevents everything from feeling seamless: Michaela Coel, who played Nanette's coworker Shania, is missing. Her absence is notable given how sympathetic a character she was, and how she ended her original episode excited to start a new chapter in the game. She'd just escaped a fate that would've left her an ugly tentacle monster forever, and it would've been nice to see her enjoy her freedom going forward.

The reason for Shania's absence is simple: Michaela Coel is a much bigger name now than she was in 2017, so it was a lot harder for her and the show to get their schedules worked out.

Black Mirror Season 7 Debuts With Poorer Viewership Numbers Than Season 6, But Better Reviews
Image
Black Mirror has been a hit since its 2011 release, exploring various genres and possibilities beyond day-to-day life. The series has just returned with Season 7.

Black Mirror comes from Charlie Brooker, who brought the series back to its roots in Season 7 after a short detour with Season 6. The series is contemporaneous, criticizing many current themes, including capitalism, technology, and the healthcare industry, but it also brings a sequel to the beloved USS Callister. Black Mirror failed to debut at the top of the charts and had a weaker debut than Season 6, per Tudum.

Black Mirror premiered on Apr. 10 on Netflix, and had two days to make an impression for the week between Apr. 7 and 13. In its short time, the series debuted in fourth place with 7.1 million views and 43.7 million hours viewed. Black Mirror Season 7 debuted in the Top 10 in 71 countries in its first week, including the U.S.

Every new season of Black Mirror launches a feverish debate over which episode was the best. We've consulted the cumulative IMDb scores for all seasons and have come up with the definitive ranking of Black Mirror episodes. Can you guess the No. 1 choice?

Season 7 was released in April 2025 and brought the total number of episodes and specials to 34. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi anthology series began on the U.K.'s Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix (and becoming a worldwide phenomenon) in 2016. The show took a four-year break after Season 5, thanks in part to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, but that just gave people even more time to relive their favorite episodes from the beginning.

USS Callister director Toby Haynes hopes to complete the trilogy
Image
The seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror dropped onto the Netflix streaming service earlier this month – and among its six episodes, for the first time in Black Mirror history, there was a sequel! The season 7 episode USS Callister: Into Infinity is a follow-up to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister, and Toby Haynes, who directed both of the USS Callister episodes, has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s hoping to make this a trilogy!

Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black...

Why Black Mirror Creator Charlie Brooker Won't Watch Severance
Image
They say that one of the best things a fiction writer can do is read and watch as much fiction as they can, to learn from what other artists in the field are doing. This is good advice 99.9% of the time, but Charlie Brooker's relationship with "Severance" might be that rare exception. Brooker is the creator and ongoing showrunner of "Black Mirror," a TV show that's long explored some very "Severance"-esque concepts. He's spoken in a recent interview about his refusal to watch the hit Apple TV+ series:

"There's certainly a show I haven't watched that's made me jealous. People keep telling me to watch 'Severance,' and I haven't let myself do it because they also say to me, 'Oh, you'll love it. It's a bit 'Black Mirror'-y, but it's much better.'"

It's easy to see Brooker's reasoning. Not only is "Severance" a similar show,...

Cristin Milioti Reveals Whether She Would Return For Another Episode of Black Mirror
Image
The following article contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 6, "USS Callister: Into Infinity"

Cristin Milioti reprises her role of Nanette Cole in the newly released season of Black Mirror, seemingly concluding her character's arc from Season 4. However, Milioti isn't completely shutting the door on a potential return to the hit anthology series.

Milioti and most of the cast from the fan-favorite Season 4 episode, "USS Callister", returned for Black Mirror's first-ever sequel episode in the newly released Season 7, providing some potential closure to a story series creator Charlie Brooker had been longing to finish. However, the feature-length sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity", may not be the end, according to Milioti. The ending of "USS Callister: Into Infinity" sees Nanette's clone finally escape the world of Infinity, having merged with her physical body in the real world. While her crew escapes as well, they appear to be stuck in Nanette's brain,...

Black Mirror Creator Reveals if the Show's Only Sequel Episode Will Get a Part 3
Image
The following contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, episode 6, "USS Callister: Into Infinity"

Black MirrorSeason 7 contains the show's first-ever sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," an epic feature-length conclusion to a story arc that started back in Season 4. However, series creator Charlie Brooker recently teased that, based on how the sequel episode ends, there may be another adventure for the USS Callister crew in a future season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brooker addressed whether he would return to make a "USS Callister" part three, considering how the sequel episode concludes. While Captain Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti) finds a way to escape the video game world of Infinity by the end of the episode, her crew ends up being trapped inside her brain, providing a chance for a potential sequel episode, given the right story down the line. Brooker, who co-wrote "USS Callister: Into Infinity" alongside Bisha K. Ali,...

Black Mirror Season 7 Finds A Way To Make The Show's Most Despicable Villain Even Worse
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 7, episode 6 -- "USS Callister: Into Infinity"

When Netflix ordered "Black Mirror" season 7 with a sequel to one of the show's best episodes -- the season 4 opener, "USS Callister" -- fans of Charlie Brooker's dystopian sci-fi anthology perked up their ears. When the first trailer for the pitch-black show's newest season dropped, glimpses of high-octane shootouts and both versions of Nanette (Cristin Milioti) meeting face to face were more than enough to further intrigue the fandom. Now, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is actually here, and it brings us one particularly big surprise: Jesse Plemons' villainous Robert Daly is back, and he's worse than ever.

The original "USS Callister" outdid the classic "The Twilight Zone" episode "It's a Good Life" by giving it a high tech twist. Daly is introduced as the chief technology officer of Callister, a company behind the online game "Infinity.

‘Black Mirror’ star Jimmi Simpson on the importance of the ‘USS Callister’ sequel: ‘It makes everything more pertinent’
Image
Jimmi Simpson is stepping back into the role of Walton for Black Mirror's "USS Callister — Into Infinity," the highly anticipated sequel to the Emmy-winning episode that originally aired in 2017. Simpson says this new chapter isn’t just a continuation — it’s essential.

“It makes everything more interesting and more pertinent,” he tells Gold Derby.

The sequel reunites Simpson with costar Cristin Milioti and director Toby Haynes, nearly a decade after the original episode debuted. Despite the nine-year gap, Simpson says slipping back into the role felt effortless.

“It was like the gang was back together,” he shares. “Just a little bit older.”

Before being cast in "USS Callister," Simpson, best known for his role on HBO's Westworld, was already a die-hard fan of the Charlie Brooker-created anthology series and could hardly believe it when he landed the role of Walton.

“I was driving home, and on my phone...

The ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first
Image
Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

As for the other new episodes,...

Classic Black Mirror episode "USS Callister" almost got a full spinoff show
Image
Black Mirror season 7 is here, folks! The dark anthology series has returned for six new episodes, including the show's first-ever sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," which continues the saga of the characters first introduced in the season 4 episode "USS Callister."

That original episode remains one of the standout entries of the entire series. It follows shy programmer Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), who steals DNA from his coworkers and codes their consciousness into his very own, idyllic video game. He essentially keeps them trapped inside a space-sci-fi universe very reminiscent of Star Trek, where he is in charge. The installment won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

For a few years, fans have been pleading for a follow-up episode. While the original ended with something of a definitive conclusion, there remained plenty of space for more adventures. I mean, we are introduced to the voice of Gamer691 (voiced...

‘Black Mirror’: Everything to remember about the original ‘USS Callister’ before watching new follow-up

The final episode of Season 7, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," catches up with the surviving members of the crew. They may have escaped a dire fate before, but now they need to figure out what comes next.

To get you ready for the sequel, here’s everything you need to remember about the original "USS Callister."

What happened in the original "USS Callister" episode?

Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), a deranged programmer for Callister Inc., used his skills to digitally clone several of his coworkers and place them into Infinity, the massively multiplayer game that their company produces.

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 reviews: ‘The series hits the high notes of human loss and love’
Image
Black Mirror returns with mostly favorable reviews of the seventh season of the Charlie Brooker-created series. The April 10 drop featured six episodes, including a sequel to 2017's "USS Callister" episode with Cristin Milioti and has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Some episodes, as you’d expect with a potpourri, are less compelling than others, but the series hits the high notes of human loss and love amid our relationship with tech and the search for life’s meaning with flashes of Brooker brilliance," writes Carol Midgley (The Times).

One episode receiving high praise is titled "Eulogy." It stars Paul Giamatti, who gives a powerful performance as a man who can step into old photographs to relive certain moments with a former love. "One could watch this episode entirely divorced from the world of Black Mirror and witness one of the best short films of 2025," writes Brian Tallerico (RogerEbert.com ), and...

‘Black Mirror’ Creator, Stars Unpack ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ Ending and if There’ll Be Another Sequel
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 6: “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”

Nearly a decade after filming “USS Callister” for “Black Mirror” Season 4, creator Charlie Brooker reunited the cast and crew — including stars Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson and director Toby Haynes — for a sequel episode, titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity.”

“It was like it was only six months since the last one — that’s what happens in the story — but it was like nine years,” Simpson told TheWrap, while Milioti noted returning to the same characters and sets felt like a “head trip.”

“In our dynamics as the cast and crew, it felt like we were right back, even though I hadn’t seen some people since we wrapped seven years before; it felt like we clipped right back into place together,” Milioti said.

“The casts’ schedule [and] availability, getting Toby back, was a gargantuan task,” Brooker told TheWrap,...

‘Black Mirror: USS Callister’ Recap: What to Remember Before the Sequel
Image
A reuniting adventure with the crew of the USS Callister is imminent in “Black Mirror.”

The first entry – “USS Callister” – aired back in 2017 as the Netflix show’s Season 4 premiere. The entry immediately jumped to the top of most fan’s rankings of best “Black Mirror” episodes and has stayed there since. A sequel to the popular episode seemed likely and Season 7 is finally delivering the goods.

But what happened in the “Star Trek” inspired first outing of the Callister? Here’s what you need to remember before diving into the sequel – “USS Callister: Into Infinity” – when Season 7 premieres.

Who Is Robert Daly?

At the beginning of the episode, Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) comes off as the William Shatner-esque captain of the USS Callister. But it isn’t long before Daly’s confident captain persona is revealed to be a farce, part of the lifelike simulation he’s running.

Black Mirror Season 7 TV Review: The anthology is back with a sequel and unique original tales
Image
Plot: Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series will return in 2025 with six brand new episodes, including a sequel to the sci-fi adventure USS Callister.

Review: Since Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror moved from the UK’s Channel 4 to Netflix in 2016, we have been lucky to get four seasons and the interactive movie Bandersnatch. The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 wraps up with a bang in Episode 6, ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity,’ bringing back the starship crew we first met years ago. Charlie Brooker revisits this fan-favorite world, flipping the script on a tale we thought was done. It’s a wild ride packed with space battles, betrayal, and that dark ‘Black Mirror’ edge, stretching into a feature-length finale that feels like a proper send-off—or maybe a new start.

Jesse Plemons returns as Robert Daly, the unhinged captain, joined by Cristin Milioti as Nanette Cole, the coder who broke free last time. Jimmi Simpson’s back as Walton, and we’ve got fresh faces like Milanka Brooks as Elena, a new crew member with her own spark. It’s a love letter to sci-fi nerds and a gut punch to anyone who thought these characters were safe. Here’s how it all plays out.

Black Mirror Returns With A USS Callister Sequel, But Star Trek Is No Longer The Main Target
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 7.

Despite being known for its creepy shared universes and slyly placed connective Easter eggs, "Black Mirror" has never actually delivered a true sequel episode until this week. Season 7, the latest chapter of Charlie Brooker's long-running dystopian anthology show, ends its mixed-bag run with a clearly branded, feature film length sequel: "U.S.S. Callister: Into Infinity."

A follow-up to season 4's "Star Trek" homage "U.S.S. Callister," the new chapter picks up about a year and a half after its events, filling in any gaps our memories might have of the original episode (which somehow aired eight years ago) with plenty of mini-flashbacks and exposition. The sequel immediately reunites most of the crew of the Callister, a virtual spaceship designed by incel programmer Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) for the purpose of terrorizing and exploiting digital versions of his coworkers while...

Black Mirror: USS Callister: Into Infinity Review — A Worthwhile but Imperfect Return to the Universe
Image
As an anthology series, the episodes of Black Mirror are pretty much standalone (with the exception of some shared universe easter eggs)… until now. Season 7 featured not one but two follow-ups to previous entries, including a sequel to one of the most acclaimed episodes in the series: USS Callister. Although USS Callister: Into Infinity doesn’t reach the new frontiers of its predecessor, it is a consistently entertaining entry that will have audiences swept away in its adventure.

Black Mirror: USS Callister: Into Infinity Review

This episode picks up after the events of the first episode, with the digital crew of the USS Callister free in the metaverse of the VR game Infinity, now fighting for their existence against human players and their real-life counterparts. As the title suggests, expanding the scope of the setting allows Into Infinity to be among the most ambitious in the show’s history, with...
