25 Years Of Josh , Mansoor Khan & Shah Rukh Speak
Image
Mansoor Ali Khan’s Josh featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai as siblings which turns 24 on June 9, was the director’s last film. Thereafter, he quit the film industry and moved to calm Coonoor.

In a throwback interview Mansoor admitted to this writer that Josh was inspired by Robert Wise’s 1961 musical. “But I found something missing in West Side Story . It got away with those shortcomings because of the music. Josh took too long to make. It got delayed because of a certain superstar. I will give you a hundred points for guessing who that was.I lost the plot. I rewrote many scenes.”

Mansoor admitted Josh was not a pleasant experience for him. “Totally not. It was nightmare. I returned the money for the two other films that I had signed. But that’s not why I quit filmmaking. I wanted Aamir to do the role Chandrachur Singh did.

This Day That Drivel: Revisiting Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, Which Was Released 23 Years Ago Today
Image
Subhash K Jha is once again focussing on a film that is well, maybe, not the best in this edition of This Day That Drivel: as he revisits Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, which released in 2002.

If only wishes were cabinet portfolios. Bihari Babu Shatrughan Sinha plays an idealistic Home Minister battling militancy in the Valley. The Kashmir problem was so poorly depicted in Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir and Tinu Verma’s Maa Tujhe Salaam that any attempt to tackle the core issue, albeit on a basic and simplistic level, raises our interest level in the potboiler genre of the Hindi commercial cinema.

Director Osho Raja, who earlier made some unsuccessful mixed-up mainstream films under his real name Ashok Tyagi, tackles the issue on a strictly “filmy” level. Except for the conflicted militant Shabbir (Chandrachur Singh), the characters are all one-dimensional heroes from the Indian government services and villains, naturally from...

Mansoor Khan Speaks To Subhash K Jha About Directing Cousin Aamir Khan
Image
Mansoor Khan, a noted director in the Hindi film industry, speaks To Subhash K Jha about working with Aamir Khan, who by the way is his cousin, the role he never planned Aamir to play, and which film that they did together was his favorite.

Mansoor, you went on to do three very successful films with him. Akele Hum Akele Tum?

Yeah. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Hoi Sikandar, Akele Hum Akele Tum. That’s it.

What is your opinion of him as to how he has evolved as an actor?

I think Aamir chose some very wrong films. Especially in the beginning. Yeah, in the beginning. But one film which I think opened him up was Dil. Indra Kumar’s style is very different from mine. His moments are loud, you know. You know, every scene is a little more intense and more over the top. So, I think that helped him.

Looking Back At Sunny Deol’s Maa Tujhe Salaam As It Clocks 23 Years
Image
“When will Kashmir get its azaadi? ” shrieks one of the chic militants in this shindig of cheap thrills and bumpersticker jingoism.

The audience roared with approval every time the brave soldiers of stunt co-ordinator Tinu Verma’s first directorial venture made nasty digs at the enemy across the border. A boisterous and jokey soldier played by Sharat Saxena whose only wish is to have his favourite song played on the radio, says, “Pakistan doesn’t understand that even if we stand and pee on their border their entire country would be flooded.”

Now this is serious Paki- bashing. Far more critical and damning than anything we’ve seen on the theme of militancy and /or border disputes like Sarfarosh, Gadar, Indian and of course J.P.Dutta’s Border from which Verma seeks several thematic and visual reference points.

No harm in going to the classics for inspiration, or for that matter,...

“Aarya Is Ram Madhvani-Sushmita’s Ode To Feminine Rage” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Aarya

Starring Sushmita Sen, Chandrachur Singh, Ankur Bhatia, Namit Das, Sikander Kher

Directed by Ram Madhvani,Sandeep Modi, Vinod Rawat

As a bereaved wife and a protective mother who would go to any lengths for her family, Sushmita Sen towers over the proceedings as only she can. Thankfully, the series– a clever, canny altogether cool but not always crisp adaptation of the Dutch series Penoza– is a stirring enticing mixture of crime and family drama blended in a heady brew which doesn’t always stand steady on its feet.

Even when the narration stumbles, there is a certain grace to the fall. Luckily even at its lowest ebb Aarya never hits the ground. Like its supremely inviolable survivor-heroine, the series keeps afloat even when it has serious length issues. I feel the same story if told in 5 instead of 9 episodes would have been much more alluring with a landscape that exuded unrest without diversions.

Subhash K Jha: “Zilla Ghaziabad is an ode to mayhem and machismo”
Zilla Ghaziabad

Starring Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi,Paresh Rawal,Arshad Warsi, Chandrachur Singh,Ravi Kissan, Divya Dutta.

Directed by Anand Kumar

Rating: ** ½

Wasseypur’s gangs never had it so good. Seeing the glorious guttural outflow of gore blood bullets and profanities in Zilla Ghaziabad one could safely(?) assume, Wasseypur is safe. So is the other release this week. Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che is as far removed from its Friday competition as flying kites are from speeding bullets.

To be fair one can’t compare two films as disparate in intent, purpose tone and treatment as Kai Po Che and Zilla Ghaziabad…except for the fact that somewhere down the line as we approach the crux and the core, both films say the same thing.

If you want to survive in this cut-throat world you have to recognize your own weaknesses and strengths. Not that I see the hurried...

Chaar din ki Chandni Movie Review
I was extremely wary of watching this movie. Except for a couple of trailers and songs, the only little information I had was that it’s Tusshar Kapoor’s solo-hero project. That limited knowledge did not warrant for a theatre watch. The makers had not succumbed to marketing gimmicks, the films promotional appearances were far and few. Samir Karnik’s whose last flick Yamla Pagala Deewana was a moderately successful yet ludicrous outing; banking on Deol strength, returns with a similar feel sticking to the familiar recipe.

The story set in Rajasthan, of Maharaja CV Singh (Anupam Kher) who when not being pompous of his ‘royal’ heritage, threatens to shoot anyone who crosses him. Adding to the royal tomfoolery are CV’s four sons each characterized by idiosyncrasies – lecherous ‘choli’ leering pervert (Mukul Dev), hot-tempered with a passion for arms (Sushant Singh), alcoholic (Chandrachur Singh) and Harish. There’s more...

Karnik says, “Ajay Devgn did the voice over for our last film Yamla Pagla Deewana and it turned out to be a hit. I have high regards for him. Ajay has a fabulous voice. He comes in the opening sequence of the film and introduces the characters and setting.”

The film stars Tusshar Kapoor, Kulraj Randhawa, Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Johny Lever, Mukul Dev, Anita Raj, Sushant Singh and Chandrachur Singh and others.

Arshad Warsi's 10 Best Roles
Although Arshad Warsi has been in the Bollywood for almost 15 years, he has yet to be fully appreciated as a solo hero. Most people know him as either Munnabhai's comic sidekick Circuit or perhaps as one of the crazy crew from the seemingly endless (but always hilarious) low brow comedies with the catchy names: Dhamaal, Golmaal, etc. etc. But if digging just a little into his prodigious back catalog, a more nuanced performer reveals himself.

Ballu in Tere Mere Sapne (1996)

The esteemed Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (Acbl) put out its first film in 1996, Tere Mere Sapne, a modern update on classic mistaken identity tales like Ram aur Shyam. The twist in this update was that the main role was not a double one - instead the film debuted two new heroes: Arshad Warsi and Chandrachur Singh. While Chandrachur was all icy smoothness as the upper class Britsh-educated Rahul, Arshad radiated...

Josh - Movie Review
'Josh' (2000): Director Mansoor Khan took the classic American musical 'West Side Story' and turned it into a distinctly Indian tale. While 'West Side Story' harkens back to America’s past, 'Josh' is relevant to contemporary India—with its many contentious ethnic and religious factions—and the film is therefore tinged with an immediacy and realism that’s missing from the Broadway musical. 'Josh' takes place in Goa, a city on the western coast of India that was colonized by the Portuguese, and many Goans are Catholic and have European names. The opposing gangs in this adaptation are Catholic and Hindu. Max (played by Shahrukh Khan) is the leader of the Catholic gang and Prakash (Sharad Kapoor) the leader of the Hindu gang. Prakash’s sensitive brother Rahul (Chandrachur Singh), who wants nothing to do with the gang, falls in love with Max’s...

While Rameshwari’s stepmom Mohini is a kind soul of sorts, her mother Kokoi is diabolical character, a witch whose sole aim is grabbing Raghavendra’s entire property for which she is even.

Sohail Khan, Sanjay Suri, Chandrachur Singh this Friday - Take your pick!
There is a surprise in store for all Bollywood fans and followers; though not really a pleasant one. Even as producers and multiplexes continue to play the game of ‘luka chuppi’ not just amongst themselves but also with the audiences, there are a few daring film makers who are going ahead and bringing their movies in theaters this Friday. Now this was a good news. The bad news though is that none of these three releases have witnessed any promotion whatsoever and arrive sans any fanfare.

These movies are ‘Maruti Mera Dosst’, ‘Team - The Force’ and ‘Anubhav’..

'Maruti Mera Dosst' is no kiddie film
Abhimanyu Singh's Contiloe Films has produced several successful television shows and the enterprising producer has now forayed into feature films. Abhimanyu, the youngest brother of actor Chandrachur Singh, has completed his first feature film Maruti Mera Dosst and is in the thick of his second film, the 3D animation Mahayodha Rama. "Maruti Mera Dosst is no kiddie film. It's a film that would appeal to kids and adults alike," Abhimanyu states. The film is a live-animation feature, an experiment that hasn't really worked in the past. "That's because the story and animation were of poor quality. The biggest of hits in Hollywood have been animation films. If it can work there, why not here? It's a matter of time," Abhimanyu states confidently. Maruti Mera Dosst signals the return of actor Chandrachur Singh, after a hiatus. "Every actor reaches a stage in life when he feels he needs to take a break,...
