Over a decade before the Arrowverse shows and their crossover events set the standard on The CW, its predecessor, The WB, was already experimenting with similar ideas involving multiple DC Comics superheroes teaming up to fight evil. On October 9, 2002, the network's "Birds of Prey" introduced a Batman-free version of Gotham City where crime runs rampant and familiar faces from the DC universe clash.

From a modern point of view, the show had a lot going for it. Its promo clips heavily suggested that its events existed in (a version of) the same continuity as the Tim Burton Batman movies -- not that this stopped the series from briefly introducing a distinctly new version of the Joker, as voiced by none other than Mark Hamill.  As its main character, "Birds of Prey" had Helena "Huntress" Kyle (Ashley Scott), the super-powered daughter of Catwoman and Batman. The Batman villain Harley Quinn made her debut on the "Batman: The Animated Series" episodes "Joker's Favor", where she was voiced by actress Arleen Sorkin. The character was envisioned as a clown-like moll for the Joker, and was given a ditzy personality and a broad Noo Yawk accent. She proved to be so popular that she was eventually incorporated into Batman comic books, and soon grew to have titles of her own. Over the years, Harley Quinn has appeared in multiple TV shows and movies, most recently played in live-action by Lady Gaga in "Joker: Folie à Deux." 

Fun trivia: Harley Quinn was actually preceded by a very, very similar character called Prank (Corinne Bohrer), a clown-like moll to a very Joker-like villain named the Trickster (Mark Hamill) on a 1991 episode of "The Flash." Whether or not the makers of "Batman: The Animated Series" were aware of Prank is a matter of speculation.

Though some of you may not even be aware of this, Warner Bros. aired a Birds of Prey TV series back in 2002, which ran for 13 episodes before being abruptly cancelled despite relatively strong ratings.

The show was set in an alternate DC Comics reality, taking place years after Batman abandoned Gotham City (now known as New Gotham) and focusing on a trio of heroes joining forces as the city's new protectors in the Dark Knight's absence.

The team was made up of Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle's daughter Helene Kyle/Huntress (Ashley Scott), Barbara Gordon/Oracle (Dina Meyer), and Dinah Redmond/Black Canary (Rachel Skarsten), with Doctor Harleen Quinzel (Mia Sara) as their main adversary.

Birds of Prey is not exactly well-regarded (and wasn't at the time), but it has since gained something of a cult following, with most of the episodes available to watch on YouTube.

On Tuesday, What’s On Netflix revealed that Netflix will be streaming 10 Hallmark Christmas movies as part of its 2024 holiday season programming. All but one premiered in 2023. Three of these movies star Hallmark Christmas Queen Lacey Chabert.

Hallmark has announced its 2024 Countdown To Christmas list. This is the 15-year-anniversary and the feel-good network has promised some fantastic holiday movies. This includes Donna Kelce in two Christmas movies, as well as adventures in Iceland, Finland, and a football romance in Hallmark’s home town of Kansas City. In addition, there is a sequel to the network’s biggest movie Ever, Three Wiser Men and A Boy.

Here are all the Countdown To Christmas movies airing on the Hallmark Channel. There are also new holiday movies on Hallmark Mystery, and Hallmark+. According to Variety, that is a total of 47 new Christmas movies for 2024!

Hallmark Channel is ready for the holidays.

The network is celebrating 15 years of their “Countdown to Christmas” franchise with 31 new movies, including the highly anticipated Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story with Hunter King and Tyler Hynes, while Hallmark Mystery will feature nine new movies as part of “Miracles of Christmas,” and Hallmark+ has an additional seven titles.

The festivities officially launch on October 18. All films premiere at 8 p.m. Et on the channel, unless otherwise noted.

Seven new movies will be part of two franchises: Christmas on Cherry Lane will see three new movies, while Unwrapping Christmas is a new, four-movie franchise following the holiday romances of four friends working at a store named All Wrapped Up.

The TV movie follows Kate Gabriel (Rachel Skarsten), a commercial pilot looking forward to spending her holiday break flying the Sharpe family on a luxurious vacation to Switzerland. During the flight, a snowstorm forces her to land at a small airport in Maritimes, Canada.

Although hesitant to divert the plane, Oliver Macleod (Andrew Walker), the pragmatic Air Traffic Control Officer, guides them to the nearby (and very real) Christmas Island, their safest option. Fate does its thing bringing Kate and Oliver closer together as they help the Sharpe family make the best of things by partaking in some local holiday traditions. Spoiler Alert: It’s probably a love connection.

Rachel Skarsten is starring as Kate Gabriel in the new Hallmark Channel movie Christmas Island and if you were interested to know more about her personal life, we have you covered.

The 38-year-old actress has a long history with the Hallmark Channel and has starred in a bunch of movies for the network including The Royal Nanny, Timeless Love, and Marry Me at Christmas.

You might also recognize Rachel from her roles as Alice in Batwoman, Elizabeth of England in Reign, or Andrea in Fifty Shades of Grey.

From the outset, the CW’s Batwoman series was one of the better offerings, thanks to a strong visual sensibility and a winning performance from Rachel Skarsten as the damaged Alice. And like every other Arrowverse show, it threatened to suffer from character bloat by the end of its second season. Thankfully, supernumerary characters and plot points were jettisoned and Javicia Leslie, as Ryan Wilder, made Batwoman her own character after Ruby Rose’s departure.

Season three, therefore, offered a lot of promise and across thirteen episodes we saw the show flirt with good, solid storytelling, too often succumbing to mind-numbing plot holes and illogic. It suffered from being hampered by the idiotic notion that Circe could waltz into the Batcave and make off with Batman’s greatest rogue weapons, all neatly fitting into a duffel bag.

The CW is parting ways with one of its superhero dramas.

The network has officially canceled Batwoman after three seasons.

Showrunner Caroline Dries took to social media to reveal the news.

"Just got the sad news that #Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes," Dries wrote.

"So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers, cast and crew."

"Thank you, fans! We love you."

Batwoman Season 3 averaged 458,000 viewers and a 0.09 rating in live + same day results, with the number swelling to 760,000 viewers with a week of DVR factored in.

In live + same day ratings, the series ranks #9 out of the 16 scripted series the network aired this season.

While the numbers were soft, the series was expected to eke out a renewal due to its ties to the Arrowverse.

“Batwoman” began airing on The CW in 2019, albeit with a different lead actress. Ruby Rose originally starred in the series, but exited after the first season. She later claimed that unsafe working conditions led to her exit, as well as issues with co-star Dougray Scott.

Javicia Leslie was then brought in as a new character to take over the mantle of Batwoman. The show also starred Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Victoria Cartagena, Robin Givens, and Nick Creegan.

The season 3 finale of Batwoman is finally here and if you think it arrived quicker this season than in prior seasons, you are correct! The series only had 13 episodes this season and while I enjoy Batwoman, the less episodes allowed the writers to focus on a stronger and more concise storyline. The first half of the season was extremely strong while the second half has struggled recently to remain focus, especially since they shipped Renee and Poison Ivy off to an island, as they have not gone “all in” with Marquis as the main villain.
