10 Best Modern Western Movies of All Time
Image
The Western genre has been one of the most successful and well-written in Hollywood history, and has been made iconic by the screen presence of stars like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. While most fans typically associate the West with horses and wagons, violent bandits, rogue bounty hunters and the perils of the 19th century, many of its best stories are set in contemporary America. This became particularly common in and after the 1970s when the mythos of the Western hero started to define the protagonists of modern action and thriller movies.

The archetypes, themes and tropes of the Western genre are as fleshed out as any, something that continues to allow it to be as versatile as entertaining. Whether combined with horror, crime, action or even science fiction, these neo-Westerns continue to serve up some of the best stories from modern Hollywood. Although the Old West is a great setting,...

10 Movie Franchises With Only 1 Good Film
Image
Since the earliest days of Hollywood, the film industry has turned many iconic hits into film series, as can be seen in the success of anything from the MCU to the James Bond movies. While most franchises manage to deliver multiple great films, particularly those with big budgets, this hasn't been universally true. In fact, some film series have continued for decades, despite only having a single good entry.

Film franchises can miss the mark for many reasons. One of the most common is the departure of key talent from future projects, which can be anything from the writer and director to leading stars. Meanwhile, other franchises stand out as an example of a studio not knowing when to call it quits, pushing them into a cycle of diminishing returns as they cling to an IP. Just as some musical bands go down as one-hit wonders, the same has been...

It’s the Little Things: An Appreciation of the Miniatures in ‘Escape from New York’
Image
In a world that’s becoming increasingly more literal by the year, it’s intoxicating to realize that your eyes have betrayed you.

For many fans of genre filmmaking, that feeling is what initially pulled our tastes towards the bizarre and dream-like. It’s a realm containing stories that give us permission to discard the rational portions of our brains for a couple of hours and embrace the possibilities of the imagination. Coupled with this escape is the promise of sights that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world but are somehow made flesh. These visual achievements elicit the same sense of childlike excitement you experience when encountering a particularly convincing magician: you know you’ve been fooled but, almost giddily, have no idea how.

When we think of special effects, what usually comes to mind are the times when monsters from our nightmares have been pulled into reality...

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell would make Oscar history with win for ‘No Time to Die’
Image
Two years ago, siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell shared in four Grammy wins for the album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” (Album of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Album) and its single “Bad Guy” (Record of the Year; Song of the Year). Now, they have concurrently earned their first Oscar nominations for co-writing the song “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. If they prevail later this month, they will become the fourth brother-sister pair to both be honored by the academy and the first to win for the same film.

The first brother-sister Oscar champs and first sibling winners overall were Douglas Shearer and Norma Shearer. In 1930, he triumphed in the Best Sound category for “The Big House” while she took the Best Actress prize for “The Divorcee.” They were followed by Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore, who respectively...

The Time Travelers
Image
Ib Melchior’s best-directed movie is a futuristic space opera with a time travel theme, all done at a production level suitable for a Halloween fun house. Yet its talented crew comes up with exciting visuals to match Melchior’s flaky-but-fun eclecticism: Androids, Mutants, ‘deviants,’ hydroponic gardens, force fields, time warps… and a sexist attitude or two to remind us that we’re seeing 2071 through the eyes of 1964. And it’s one of the earliest Hollywood credits for cameramen Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs.

Tremors 4K
Image
This 1990 monster romp still feels bright, smart & fresh, a mix of light comedy and old-fashioned scares. The entire show is one long battle against smelly burrowing beasts called ‘Graboids.’ Desert handymen Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must work hard to avoid taking their place in the Graboid Food Chain. Ambitious it ain’t, but it delivers what monster fans want — gross-out thrills, excellent effects and solid laughs. Arrow’s 4K Ultra HD disc is as sharp as a tack, and a second Blu-ray disc contains an unprecedented volume of featurettes, interviews and production documentation.

August 13th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Vice Squad Collector’s Edition, Radioland Murders, and Steelbooks of Forbidden World and Galaxy Of Terror

Other notable releases for August 13th include Avengers: Endgame, The Velocipastor (ahead of its Blu-ray release on September 17th), A Dark Place, Devil Music,...

October 9th Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Trick ’R Treat and House On Haunted Hill (1999) Collector’s Editions, Hotel Transylvania 3
For the second week of October, I hope horror fans have their wallets ready, because there are a multitude of Blu-rays and DVDs that would be perfect editions to your home entertainment collections, especially with All Hallows' Eve being just right around the corner. The fine folks at Scream Factory are truly doing the dark lord’s work this Tuesday, as they've put together some incredible Collector’s Edition Blu-rays for both House on Haunted Hill (1999) and Michael Dougherty’s Trick ’r Treat.

As far as recent releases go, Hotel Artemis and Skyscraper arrive on various formats this Tuesday, and while they both may not be straight-up genre films, each of these films flew under the radar upon their theatrical releases, and I found them both to be a lot of fun and very much worth a watch, so I felt like including them here. Also, for all the kiddos out there,...

Scream Factory Blu-ray Reviews: House On Haunted Hill (1999) Collector’s Edition, Scream For Help (1984), and The Bride (1985)
As Halloween grows nearer and Scream Factory prepares to break out the big guns over the next few months in the form of titles like Trick ’r Treat, Creepshow, and Candyman, the company is still busy putting out smaller and less universally beloved titles to round out the library of every obsessive horror fan. Our latest Scream Factory roundup runs pretty much the whole gamut: we have a modern classic, an undiscovered gem, and a pretty forgettable dud. The world, as they say, is a rainbow.

Once upon a time, I would have called William Malone’s 1999 remake of House on Haunted Hill one of the most underrated horror movies of the ’90s. But like so many other films that have the benefit of time and distance, a cult of fandom has developed around the remake in the almost two decades since it was released. The first film from Dark Castle Entertainment,...

A Clever, Resourceful Special Effect Surprise
A Savant Article

CineSavant shows off an arcane observation: in 1957, scenes from a glossy CinemaScope Fox production directed by Raoul Walsh, were almost immediately re-purposed, with grandiose special effects added, for a landmark science fiction fantasy. It’s an opportunity to admire the resourceful artistry of Jack Rabin, Louis DeWitt and Irving Block, special effects professionals that did fine work but were seldom if ever considered for industry awards.

Back in the 1970s I picked up from Larry Edmunds’ Bookstore a copy of a one-shot special effects fan magazine that I think had been put together by the effects master/researcher Robert Skotak. The photo magazine lauded the efforts of a Hollywood effects partnership consisting of Jack Rabin, Irving Block and Louis DeWitt. Their names appeared on dozens of 1950s films, for their creative optical work — whatever enhancements might be needed, from simple title sequences to matte shots and even stop-motion animation when required.

How a low budget film led to James Cameron's Aliens
Ryan Lambie Jul 14, 2017

A cult gem in its own right, 1981's Galaxy Of Terror also gave James Cameron his start in big-screen filmmaking...

In most respects, it's pure Roger Corman: low-budget, swiftly made, and loaded with gratuitous gore and bare flesh. But take a closer look at Galaxy Of Terror, the amiably tawdry sci-fi horror flick released by Corman's New World in 1981, and you'll see the creative fingerprints of one James Cameron.

See related 8 Star Wars games we'd like to see

Directed by Bruce D Clark - who also co-wrote - Galaxy Of Terror slams together the plots of Ridley Scott's Alien and the 50s classic, Forbidden Planet. A group of explorers land on the planet Morganthus, where they discover a huge ancient pyramid; one by one, the visitors are terrorised and killed by monsters from their subconscious. One luckless character is torn apart by claws and tentacles...

Review: "Queen Of Blood" (1966) Starring John Saxon And Basil Rathbone; Blu-ray Special Edition From Kino Lorber
By Hank Reineke

Though the 1966 space-age vampire flick Queen of Blood is not new to home video, it has been one of the more elusive science-fiction titles of the 1960s. Issued on VHS as Planet of Blood back in the early 1980s on the budget “Star Classics” label and later in 1990 on a much improved laser disc from Image (paired with Mario Bava’s similarly-themed Planet of the Vampires), Queen of Blood has been mostly unavailable to collectors for nearly twenty-five years. In March 2011 MGM finally re-issued the title as part of its Limited Edition Collection, but only as a made-on-demand release. In 2015, Kino Lorber has – very happily for genre fans and collectors - rescued this title from the wasteland of cult-film marginalia with their superb Blu-Ray release of this Roger Corman-Curtis Harrington classic.

Queen of Blood (for reasons we’ll get into a little later on) more...

DVD Savant 2015 Favored Disc Roundup
or, Savant picks The Most Impressive Discs of 2015

This is the actual view from Savant Central, looking due North.

What a year! I was able to take one very nice trip back East too see Washington D.C. for the first time, or at least as much as two days' walking in the hot sun and then cool rain would allow. Back home in Los Angeles, we've had a year of extreme drought -- my lawn is looking patriotically ratty -- and we're expecting something called El Niño, that's supposed to be just shy of Old-Testament build-me-an-ark intensity. We withstood heat waves like those in Day the Earth Caught Fire, and now we'll get the storms part. This has been a wild year for DVD Savant, which is still a little unsettled. DVDtalk has been very patient and generous, and so have Stuart Galbraith & Joe Dante; so far everything...

Crowdfunding Friday: mice, monsters and a Christopher Walken dinosaur
Feature Ryan Lambie 17 May 2013 - 05:47

Here's a fresh batch of worthy, geek-friendly crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye this week...

The best part of putting together this weekly crowdfunding column? While trawling through the dozens of ideas that appear online every day, we stumble on all kinds of weird and wonderful things.

Some ideas are semi-practical - a new kind of flip-flop with soles made from astro turf, for people who want to feel as though they're walking on grass all day long - while others are downright strange - such as a set of tabletop gaming figures shaped neat like little human backsides.

Some ideas are commercial and enticing enough to sale past their funding goal - a zombie Lego Batman mash-up animation's already doing well - while others are rather more niche - we spotted a strip poker text adventure, which has, unsurprisingly, attracted rather less interest so far.

The Bells Of Saint John

By Steven Moffat

Directed by Colm McCarthy

The Doctor is in the early 13th century, meditating over the living (well, living somewhere) mystery that is Clara Oswin Oswald. So when he’s told “The Bells of St. John are ringing”, he races back to his hidden Tardis, (with its “St. John’s Ambulance” label) where the phone in the door is ringing. Virtual Refractions 1.5: Ulmer/"Beyond the Time Barrier" (The Blackout Cataclysm)
Beyond the Time Barrier is part of Anthology Film Archives' Edgar G. Ulmer retrospective in New York.

Above: The Light Ahead (Edgar G. Ulmer, 1939).

“Nicholson was able to photograph the parked F-102a from a matched angle to complete the second side of the split-screen shot begun at the abandoned airfield the previous day. Fortunately, the weather had remained consistent, or the composite could never have been assembled. For the film, the jet would now appear in the same shot with the wrecked control tower and Clarke, though existing in actuality some twenty miles apart.

At every step, Ulmer sought production value and realism whenever he could squeeze it in, even when barely possible. Says Clarke: ‘We were very exited about [trying to get] a B-36 as it was taxiing along. We were so hopeful that the actors playing the officials from the Pentagon would get their dialogue correct and that their car...

Prometheus Blu-ray – First Details
The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.

Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.

Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

You also get Ridley Scott providing an audio commentary so it will be very interesting...

The Russian heritage for Ridley Scott's Prometheus?
Over at the Prometheus Forums is an interesting post and set of picture-comparisons by the poster 'Lethal_Mutation', in which it's suggested that the space-suits in Ridley Scott's Alien prequel, released in early June of this year, derive a lot of tech-dna from a 1962 Soviet science-fiction film called Planeta Bur (aka Planet of the Storms, Planet of Storms, Planet of Tempests, and Storm Planet, among many others).

Lethal_Mutation (those of us who don't speak Russian will have to trust him on this) has translated part of a rather aggrieved article from a popular Russian Prometheus blog...

It appears that the design of the Prometheus spacesuits is not original but based on spacesuits from the Ussr developed in the early 1960's. Spacesuits of a similar design were first shown in the 1961 Soviet science fiction film, Planet of the Storms directed by Paul Klushantsev...It was purchased by the American studio,...

Retro Review: Invasion Earth – The Aliens Are Here
Invasion Earth: The Aliens Are Here

Stars: Janice Fabian, Christian Lee, Larry Bagby, Dana Young | Written by Miller Drake | Directed by Robert Skotak

Aliens invade a small town invading the towns cinema where the patrons are watching a sci-fi marathon. Taking over the projection room, the aliens splice together footage of old sci-fi films from the 50s to try an “bore” the audience into losing their minds so that they can take them over. A couple of teenagers in the audience realise that the alien threat is real and set out to put an end to the aliens plans before it’s too late.

Only really notable for being the one and only directorial effort from Robert Skotak, a visual effects whiz who has worked on such films as Tremors, Darkman, Terminator 2 and more recently Joe Dante’s The Hole, Invasion Earth: The Aliens Are Here isn’t really a movie,...

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox) Sequel to the seminal 1980s film catches up with a weathered, but still determined Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, who seems to savor every syllable of Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff’s screenplay) just out of jail and back on the comeback trail. In attempting to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan), Gekko forges a reluctant alliance with her fiancé (Shia Labeouf), himself an ambitious young turk who finds himself seduced by Gekko’s silver tongue and promise of riches. Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Robinson Crusoe on Mars’ Monkeys With Sci-Fi Genre
Chicago – A fascinating B-movie gem from 1964, “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” gives modern viewers an idea of what America’s collective imagination (concerning space travel) looked like during that brief moment in time. As an entertainment, it’s hokey and creaky beyond belief, but as a cinematic time capsule, it’s quite a trip.

The film begins with the most heartbreaking bait and switch in camp movie history. Two years before his success with “Batman,” Adam West shows up as an astronaut orbiting Mars. The deadpan earnestness of his performance is priceless right from the beginning, as he scolds a floating monkey with the line, “Listen Mona, this banana paste is meant for your survival only!” Sadly, the ship is soon forced to evacuate, killing off West and leaving only disgruntled monkey Mona and West’s crewmate, Kit, played by Paul Mantee. Seriously, it’s like being promised Keir Dullea and getting Gary Lockwood.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars Blu Ray Review
Robinson Crusoe on Mars Directed by: Byron Haskin Written by: Daniel Defoe (novel), John C. Higgins, Ib Melchior Starring: Paul Mantee, Victor Lundin and Adam West With a title like Robinson Crusoe on Mars [1], it's easy to lump in Byron Haskin's [2] quiet and deliberate survival film with sci-fi b-movie fare like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians [3] or Mars Needs Women [4]. While I don't think it's so horrible to hold company with goofy films such as those, Robinson Crusoe on Mars certainly excels beyond Saturday Matinee fare and gives us an interesting spin on a classic tale, resulting in a film that's both entertaining and scientifically accurate (sort of). The film is a sci-fi retelling of Daniel Defoe's original novel, Robinson Crusoe [5], substituting a tropical island for a harsh Martian landscape. When Commander Christopher 'Kit' Draper (played by Paul Mantee [6]) and his co-pilot Colonel Dan McReady (a pre-Batman...

Blu-ray Review: Robinson Crusoe on Mars (Criterion Collection)
The first thing that came to my mind after only a few minutes of watching Criterion's new Blu-ray transfer of Robinson Crusoe on Mars was Forbidden Planet. This isn't exactly a mind-blowing revelation. In fact it's a rather elementary observation at best, which is exactly where my knowledge of old school sci-fi films lies.

I like old school science fiction, but I don't have the patience to search out the quality amongst the crap. I'm a huge fan of the original "Star Trek" television series, I enjoyed Forbidden Planet and had fun with director Byron Haskin's Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but Haskin's original War of the Worlds did very little for me. I know in some circles this is probably considered blasphemy, but if it helps any Steven Spielberg's remake, while I admit to enjoying it when I saw it the first time in theaters, hasn't been a...

[Blu-Review] Alien Anthology
Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.

Alien:

How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.

Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

Alien Anthology Blu-ray Review
Holy God. That’s one of the first reactions one has to 20th Century Fox’s six disc Blu-ray release of the Alien Anthology. It was put together by Charles de Lauzirika, and he’s the guy who’s been doing all the supplements for this franchise for years now, including the awkwardly named Alien Quadrilogy. His task was to make a collection that had not only improved picture and sound quality, but all the supplements of previous releases, and even more additional content. He and his team delivered; this is the mother lode. Of course, the series is also presented immaculately, with each film offering two cuts, deleted scenes, commentaries and isolated scores. The six disc set has over 60 hours of supplements. It’s mind-boggling and overwhelming, but also the perfect franchise for this sort of study, and it’s perfect for Blu-ray. Our humbled review of the Alien...

Joshua Reviews Roger Corman’s Galaxy Of Terror And Forbidden World [DVD Reviews]
When people think of Roger Corman, they think of two things: camp filled films with copious amounts of blood and skin, and Death Race 2000. However, hoping to help change that is the genius collective known as Shout! Factory.

Releasing a collection of films under the banner of Roger Corman’s Cult Classics, then company has added to their ever growing catalogue of Roger Corman produced projects, which currently includes the aforementioned Death Race 2000 among others, with two new releases of classic projects, Galaxy of Terror, and Forbidden World.

Both are solid winners here, but the true king of the pair here is Galaxy Of Terror.

The film follows the crew of a rescue ship, who while on a mission, come into contact with a group of monsters. However, these aren’t just your run of the mill beasts. These monsters are bread from th very subconscious of each member of the crew,...

Blu-ray News: Grindhouse Confirmed for October 5th; Alien Anthology Arrives on October 26th
In addition to the excellent Criterion Blu-ray news we reported earlier today, we have two more items that will please HD cinephiles. First up, Blu-ray.com confirms a story we ran a couple weeks ago that hinted the Blu-ray of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse was on the way. While there are no details about the set (although Edgar Wright said he did a commentary track for his fake trailer, Don’t), you should mark your calendars for October 5th. I’m excited to see these films put back together because that’s how they were meant to be seen.

Hit the jump for news on the highly-anticipated Alien Anthology box set.

I am convinced that studios are conspiring to bankrupt me on October 26th because that’s when Alien Anthology hits shelves. It also happens to be the date when the Blu-rays of the Back to the Future...
