It’s embarrassing to even call “The Little Mermaid” (2024) a film. It’s as bad, lazy and sloppy as it can get, reducing characters to stock, vapid types. There’s no attempt to make the delivery arch and camp, even though there’s so much scope here. Leigh Scott has written and directed a film that’s a travesty across the board, the juvenile writing exacerbated by the silliest performances. There’s no redeeming value to be found, only an endless barrage of the most ridiculous scenes that strain your endurance, push the very tether of what you can accept to watch.
Rarely has the trope of the vicious, seductive mermaid poised to kill been so deathly boring. The sinister edge appears forced and crashing in its doling out of stupidities. What could have been fun only comes off as amateurish and unbearably harebrained. It’s as if the makers...

In The Little Mermaid, Leigh Scott transforms the classic fairytale from Disney’s family-friendly narrative to an unsettling R-rated horror story.
The film unfolds on a Caribbean island, where supernatural elements depart from the original’s innocence, dragging the mermaid myth into darker territories. This version draws from Caribbean folklore and Lovecraftian themes, reimagining the mermaid as a malevolent force.
The island setting critically shapes the narrative, placing it between traditional storytelling and modern horror. Supernatural and psychological aspects aim to create tension, yet the film’s slow rhythm often diminishes its ability to shock viewers. Brief glimpses suggest a larger mythology, but the story struggles to weave these cultural threads into a unified whole.
Scott’s work explores a nuanced cultural landscape, attempting to merge traditional stories with global horror conventions. The film’s limited cultural exploration makes it feel like an incomplete vision, leaving audiences pondering the transformation...

There’s a common error made by filmmakers in the horror genre that has led to some appalling movies: they forget that horror should be fun. This isn’t to say that all horror movies should have some humor or camp; I’m not asking Ari Aster to pump up his stories of grief and trauma with cheesy one-liners. But when you set out with a B-movie concept of remaking a fairytale that is most known for its Disney adaptation into a horror movie, the last thing you should do is take yourself too seriously. And, yet, that is exactly what happens in Leigh Scott’s The Little Mermaid.

Something tells us this particular take on The Little Mermaid won't be belting out "Part of Your World" and cavorting with Sebastian and her other aquatic pals "Under the Sea."
Continuing the recent trend of re-adapting Disney favorites such as Winnie-The-Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio and Bambi for the horror genre, a new adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale is on the way from Lionsgate's Msr Media International and Grindstone Entertainment, and the first full trailer is now online (via Bloody Disgusting).
First published in 1837, Anderson's original story was significantly darker than the Disney animated version and the more recent live-action remake, but turning Ariel (here named Aurora) into a flesh-eating monster might be taking things a bit too far!
This version of the titular mermaid is a member of an ancient, advanced prehistoric society that's unearthed during an archaeological expedition.

Disney might be focused on superheroes and other live-action films at the moment, but its core business remains the one of animated films. Because of that, the studio will continue to explore some of its older stories, creating a new take on The Little Mermaid's Ariel.
Per Disney, the upcoming animated series will premiere on Disney Junior on June 27 and will follow a young Ariel and her underwater friends. The new series, which was announced in June 2023, will take elements from the iconic The Little Mermaid, which first premiered in 1989. However, it looks like the 2023 live-action version starring Halle Bailey as the iconic Disney princess sets the base for the new animated series.

The Little Mermaid is one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved fairytales. The story has been made popular by Disney’s 1989 animated feature, which altered a lot of the original story, and which also received a live-action remake in 2023, starring Halle Bailey. But, it seems that this was not the final live-action adaptation of the story, as Msr Media International is bringing us a live-action horror adaptation of Andersen’s story, which recently received its first trailer and poster.

What do you get when you cross bio-engineering, strippers, deadly fish, gold-flake cinnamon drank, and lovable losers? You get awesome, is what you get. This particular serving of awesome is called 'Piranha Sharks', and it comes to you from the mind of one Leigh Scott. Sigh. Yes, 'Transmorphers' Leigh Scott. No, this is not 'Transmorphers'. Relax.
Piranha Sharks are bio-engineered creatures, that are repackaged, and targeted towards kids, as the year's hot new Christmas item. However, when the animals make their way into the New York water system, it falls on Jackson (Collin Galyean), and his pest-killing buddies (John Wells, and Josh Hammond) to get rid of them, before they destroy the city.
The writing works first, to set this film apart. It takes a shot at many of the cheesy indie cliches, with hilarious class, and accuracy.

The drama, set during the Northern Ireland “Troubles”, was passed over by the International Jury headed by James Schamus, but received a Special Mention from the Ecumenical Jury.
The German distributor also acquired New Zealand director Toa Fraser’s Maori action epic Dead Lands, which is currently in production on the North Island as a UK-New Zealand co-production and is being sold internationally by Xyz Films.
In addition, rights for the motor cycling documentary Road were bought for a straight-for-dvd release from The Works.

While the makers of cheesy shark movies keep trying to come up with the next big thing, writer-director Leigh Scott is thinking smaller with his new horror-comedy Piranha Sharks. We’re gonna need a bigger aquarium!
Forget about that Sharknado soon to strike New York City, great white sharks the size of piranhas are swarming the Big Apple in this tongue-in-jaws nature gone amok flick from Leigh Scott (The Penny Dreadful Picture Show, Dorothy & the Witches of Oz).
Josh Hammond, John Wells, Noel Thurman, and Jessica Sonneborn are amongst those forced to contend with the man-eating, mutant, pint-sized apex predators that get loose in the plumbing of New York City.
Synopsis:
Great white sharks bio-engineered to be the size of piranhas with the purpose of living in rich people's exotic aquariums terrorize New York City when they get into the water supply and do what great white sharks do best.

Fans of horror anthologies like Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt will find plenty to love with The Penny Dreadful Picture Show. The film has some flaws, but they are easy to look past thanks to a great blend of horror and humor and the icon creating performance of Eliza Swenson as our tour guide Penny. Writers/Directors Nick Everhart, Leigh Scott and Eliza Swenson have put together an eclectic collection of horror shorts with Penny (who is just looking for love, even if she has to find it on the Internet), Wolfboy (Dillon Geyselaers) and Ned (Collin Galyean) introducing each as we watch in an abandoned movie theater that serves as Penny’s home and place where she is meeting...

Legendary UK film studio Hammer didn't only dabble in films; Hammer also created thirteen one-hour shorts to be shown on television as Hammer House of Horror. These episodes aired on ITV during the fall of 1980.
I watched Witching Time to get a feel for the release as well as the series. It's a funny thing to pop in a DVD of a made-for-tv series and find the episode shows full nudity before the credits even roll, as is what happens in Witching Time. The UK has always been more open about such things than the supposed 'Land of the Free', and this was certainly true in 1980. That's not to say the nudity shown in Witching Time is overtly lascivious - it's fairly restrained, actually - but it is a reminder how lamely conservative our own "oh please, think of the children" television is.

When Jonathan Frid joined the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows in 1967, little did anyone know his portrayal of a tortured vampire Barnabas Collins would be catalyst that would launch the series into stratosphere of pop culture popularity and make the Hamilton, Ontario born actor a legend.
The actor passed away on April 14 at the age of 87 in his home town of natural causes.
Born in 1924, Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He graduated from McMaster University in 1948, and the following year was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He moved to the United States in 1954, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 1957. Classically trained, Frid spent thirty years in live theater, starring in the first productions at the Williamstown Theater and stage productions in Canada, England and the United States, though occasionally working in television.

Actress/model Chanel Ryan tells us that since she made the decision to switch her focus full time to acting, she has been busy with a number of new 'genre' feature film projects.
"I Just finished shooting the comedy/horror film 'Bad Kids Go To Hell' in Texas and Wow was it Hot!," said Ryan. "We basically went straight from filming in Dallas to San Diego Comicon to unveil the teaser, and do a bit of promotion.
"'Bad Kids' started out as a best selling indie comic book series/graphic novel of the same name, written by Barry Bazza Wernick who is also the film's producer. Matthew Spradlin is the director.
"Fans of the series will be happy to know that since both writers were on set everyday, the project is staying true to the comic in production, script & mood...sort of a "Breakfast Club" meets 'The Grudge'.

Bleeding Cool has posted the trailer for The Witches of Oz. The film (which appears to be a sequel of sorts to the original The Wizard of Oz story) is directed by one Leigh Scott, a veteran filmmaker from Hollywood knock-off masters Asylum. Transmorphers is amongst the number of features he’s made for the company (no prizes for guessing which franchise was being paid “homage” to there) .
Wonder if Oz is any good? It looks well shot and the effects work appears to be more than adequate for this type of low-budget fantasy flick. This has been produced by an independent company called MarVista Entertainment Inc, who seem to have a little more money then Asylum, as the ensemble cast proves. B-movie regulars like Christopher Lloyd, Lance Henrikson and Jeffrey Combs are all present and correct, and it’s also a shrewd move on the company’s behalf to...

Maybe this will help us get the taste of 'Tin Man' out of our mouths. Finally.
Not since 1987's made-for-tv Return to Oz have I been this excited about an Oz film. Let's face it - the original musical 1939 version with Judy Garland reduced the menacing, opium-induced political propaganda originally created by L. Frank Baum to so much MGM glitter and Oscar romance. But Fairuza Balk's first starring role, as Dorothy Gale who returns to Oz to face an evil Nome King, a headless princess, wheeled human punk rockers who chase you through the streets of the broken Emerald City, and talking chickens, was awesome. And since then?
Just more gibberish in musical form and a really bad made-for-tv SyFy Channel Dorothy movie that I think we'd rather all forget.
