Tears for Fears Offer Spacey New Song “Astronaut”: Stream
Image
Tears for Fears are back with “Astronaut,” the latest new song off their upcoming live album Songs for a Nervous Planet.

“Astronaut” features some sublime, reverb-ridden falsetto from Roland Orzabal and takes a majestic, glammy turn in the chorus. “I wanna be an astronaut,” Orzabal sings with harmonies surrounding him. “Emotionally it’s about this guy who doesn’t feel he belongs here and wants to be an astronaut floating out into space… a lot of people identify with the emotion of that song, that sense of alienation,” said the band’s Curt Smith in a statement.

The song came together during the sessions for Tears for Fears’ 2022 album, The Tipping Point. “Once we realized that we were going to end up doing more than just one new track for this album, Roland sent me the original recording of “Astronaut” and I had forgotten...

Psych: The True Story Behind The Show's Pineapple Obsession
Image
Pineapples became a staple in Psych thanks to an improvised line by James Roday in the pilot episode. Fans loved searching for pineapples in nearly every episode of Psych, making it a recurring and fun gag. How I Met Your Mother also used pineapples as a running joke, but not as frequently as Psych.

Psych had a reputation of having a humorous obsession with pineapples, but many fans have wondered why. The tropical fruit made multiple appearances throughout the USA series, and the show's attachment to pineapples even extended to promotional photos of the cast, comic con conventions, and merchandise. Through its eight-season run, Psych made use of a number of recurring jokes and gags. These included Shaun's long list of fake nicknames for Gus (Dul Hill), references to popular movies from the 1980s, Gus' "Magic Head" moniker that originated in a season 1 episode, and many more.

Recording Mad World For Donnie Darko Took No Time At All
Image
"Donnie Darko," the 2001 Richard Kelly-directed mind-bender of a movie about time travel, death, and the dreadfully existential experience that is high school is memorable for many reasons. Today, if you so much as mention the cult film, images of Frank the rabbit and his shot-out eye immediately come to mind. Frank is the stuff of nightmares, enhancing the movie's atmosphere with his mysterious and ominous presence in the title character's life. However, Frank's creepiness is only one part — albeit a big one — of the film's peculiarities, none of which would be anywhere near as effective if it weren't for one major thing: the music.

The score for "Donnie Darko" is perhaps just as memorable as Frank, that pesky jet engine, the incredible finale, and that one uncomfortable scene in Donnie's (Jake Gyllenhaal) therapist's office. It is the thing that sets the tone for the entire movie, kicking things off...

One Of Donnie Darko's Biggest Challenges Was Landing The Rights To Tears For Fears
Image
The soundtrack to "Donnie Darko" is among my all-time favorite movie soundtracks, and I'm surely not alone in this. Not only is the score by Michael Andrews hauntingly beautiful, but the licensed songs played throughout are New Wave gems. Seriously, what other movie soundtrack has The Church, Oingo Boingo, and Joy Division on it?

However, the most memorable inclusion on the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack had to be not one, but two songs from English pop duo Tears for Fears -- one was the famous Andrews and Gary Jules cover of "Mad World," while the other was the studio version of "Head Over Heels." It's hard to separate either song from the film anymore, and the way they are both integrated into the film shows how carefully constructed each element of Richard Kelly's movie is.

That being said, both the "Mad World" cover and "Head Over Heels" could have easily...

Watch Kevin Bacon, Jimmy Fallon Reimagine Tears for Fears’ ‘Head Over Heels’
Image
Kevin Bacon joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show for a segment called “First Drafts of Rock,” which saw the pair performing an alternate version of Tears for Fears’ 1985 song “Head Over Heels.”

Standing in for Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, complete with ’80s haircuts, Bacon and Fallon showcased the supposed “first draft” of the New Wave song. While the original tune opens with “I wanted to be with you alone / and talk about the weather,” this version takes the discussion of the weather to the next level.

A Dystopian Labyrinth ‘Breaks the Man’ in Tears for Fears Video
Image
It’s all a game. On Thursday, Tears for Fears released the music video for their single “Break the Man” — and it follows identical, black suit-sporting men as they go about their lives mindlessly walking through a labyrinth.

“No more wondering what happens now/No more holding your feet to the fire/When everything is running down/No more pain,” the duo sings on the track as the video becomes a kaleidoscope of dystopia.

By the end of the video, each man reaches the top of a ledge and jumps off to their seeming demise.

Tears for Fears Drop Previously Unreleased ‘Rhythm of Life’
Image
Tears for Fears have shared the previously unreleased “Rhythm of Life,” the first offering from their upcoming Seeds of Love box set.

The demo was recorded by frontman Roland Orzabal and keyboardist Nicky Holland in 1986, but the track didn’t make it onto the 1989 album. Instead, Orzabal gave it to singer Oleta Adams — who sings on the opening track “Woman in Chains” — for her 1990 album Circle of One, which he produced.

“Climbin’ every mountain, always killing time/Count the cost as days go by,” he sings over a steady groove.

Psych: The Essential Episode Guide
Image
As a TV series, Psych is like one of those frozen yogurt chains where the wall is ringed with different flavors and you can keep pulling levers for whatever combination you want. There are the Shawn/Gus episodes, the “Shawn’s psychic lie is threatened” episodes, the increasingly genius and lovingly rendered (often ‘80s-tastic) tributes, and the ensemble classics where the whole cast is just a well-oiled machine after years of riffing off one another. You can have whatever flavor you want. And don’t even get me started on toppings.

Over its eight-year run, Psych interrogated its own premise, built out its supporting cast, let its characters play their favorite movie characters, and adapted its own internal mythology into trilogies that would make any movie-buff weep with appreciation. Here is a baker’s dozen of the most giggle-worthy, self-referential, surprisingly dramatic episodes of Psych.

Is it a coincidence that March 19′s penultimate episode of USA’s Psych — the last one star James Roday will ever direct — features his co-star Dulé Hill (Gus) running and screaming for most it? “No it is not,” Roday says. “It’s been one of the great joys of my experience on Psych, and I know our fans are equally as fond of watching Gus being in peril and trying to scream his way out of it.”

In the episode, “A Nightmare on State Street,” Gus visits a dream therapist (guest star Bruce Campbell) to help determine the true fear behind his terrifying nightmares.

Psych Books Sutton Foster For Terror-Filled Season 8 Finale
After Psych went to its fans to choose what the plot of the Season 8 finale should be, the online poll led to the choice of the James Roday penned “A Nightmare on State Street,” an episode described as “a new vision in terror.” Just how scary it is remains to be seen, but it won’t be without a little romance. Bunheads alum Sutton Foster was cast in the finale, joining an already sizable group of guest stars. The only thing we don’t really know about her character is whether or not she’s even real or just a part of Gus’ subconscious.

The finale will see a sleep-deprived Gus going for dream therapy in order to get to the bottom of the night terrors he’s been having. But things don’t go as planned and Gus soon finds that nothing is as it seems after he leaves his session.

Psych Season 7 Report Card: A
Psych Season 7 was jam-packed with all the shenanigans, malarkey and tom-foolery you would expect from USA Network's longest running original show, which celebrated its 100th episode this season this year.

So while we wait for the Psych musical to air this December, let's take a look back at what made this season so epic in our latest TV Fanatic Report Card...

Best Episode: "Juliet Takes A Luvah" because Shawn could not seem to catch a break the entire episode and it was. Hilarious to watch. The shenanigans of "Office Space" made that episode a close second

Best Homage: "100 Clues" to celebrate the 100th episode. Complete with alternate endings voted on live by the fans, this episode had everything that makes Psych great, including a cameo from Curt Smith. May he rest in peace... just kidding.

Best Gus Nickname: Blue Ivy Carter. I'm sorry. It was the best pop-culture reference the show made this season.

'Psych' 100 'Clue' Tribute Features Fan-Voted Endings
Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych (2006)
For its 100th episode, "Psych" did a spoof of the 1985 cult classic film "Clue." They even tapped three of the actors from that madcap mystery to guest star, though in new roles. Christopher Lloyd, Lesley Ann Warren and Martin Mull reunited on the screen, joined by Garrett Morris, Curt Smith and Steve Valentine. But this time it was Shawn who figured out who did it.

Actually, it was the viewing audience at home who got to pick which ending they wanted to see. There were five suspects and separate votes held for the East and West coast airings. On the East Coast, it was Garrett Morris' butler character. The band had apparently been stealing his music for years -- he had a mean whistle -- and he was fed up with it.

The West Coast went with a "Clue" alum, voting for the author played by Christopher Lloyd. But TV.

Psych 100th Episode Review: Rock Stars
We didn’t need "100 Clues" to tell us that Psych is a rock star of a USA Network original. But we did need this episode to give us one more reason to love this series.

In true Psych fashion, fans were treated to both a tribute to Clue And a tribute to all the things that make an episode so memorable: murder, mystery and guest stars.

I suppose the sillyness began with Shawn and Gus in those ridiculous rock star costumes. If there is one look that wasn’t mean for either of these men, it was tight pants, eyeliner and those claws Shawn had on his hands.

It has been a while since we’ve seen the pair don costumes, and now that I’ve witnessed these, I'm confident I can go several more episodes without seeing them in another one. It will take me long enough to expel...

It was a dress rehearsal for USA's plan to let viewers of "Psych" choose the ending of Wednesday's episode, celebrating the drama's 100th episode and culminating the network's two-year experiment at an exclusively fan-centered approach at marketing.

In the episode, Shawn (actor James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) try to solve a murder at a party hosted by an old rock star in a California mansion. There are five suspects: the groupie, the manager, the author, the host and, of course, the butler. During the show, the suspects are narrowed down to three and viewers are asked to vote on social media who they thought committed the crime. Three endings were filmed, each lasting three minutes, and the top vote-getter will be used.

Aaron Sorkin at an event for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
'Psych' Star Talks Gus, Aaron Sorkin & More!
Aaron Sorkin at an event for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
From his lifelong career as a tap dancer to his roles on "Psych" and "The West Wing," Dule Hill never seems to have a dull moment.

Although his days of working with Aaron Sorkin are behind him (for now ... ), Hill has been starring on USA's "Psych" for seven seasons as Gus, Detective Shawn Spencer's (James Roday) straight-laced assistant. But he almost turned down the job.

In honor of the series' 100th episode right around the corner (airing Wed., Mar. 27 at 10 p.m. Et), the "Psych" team has teased a "Clue"-like episode in which viewers can weigh in on the ending.

Hill sat down with HuffPost TV on Tuesday morning to discuss "Psych," Gus, Aaron Sorkin and more.

Will Gus be one of the suspects 100th episode?

I can't give that up! You have some real investigative reporting going on. Here's what I'll tell you: Throughout the show, everyone is a suspect at some point.

Psych Season 7 Premiere Giveaway
It’s that time again Psych-Os. The seventh season of Psych kicks off tonight with the conclusion of last season’s cliffhanger. If there was any doubt about where we were headed last season, yes, Henry is in a very bad way, and the result leads to a very new perspective for Shawn.

While a lot of shows on cable networks, even some of the best, seem to struggle if they make past a handful of seasons, Psych is still going strong. Not simply, “as funny as ever,” but actually continuing to develop and grow, it’s pushing itself to new heights. The continuation of “Santa BarbaraTown” (or however they expect that to be written) is just the beginning. The season will also feature a 100th-episode spectacular that includes a reunion of some of the cast of Clue, and we will be seeing “Psych: The Musical.”

Also, don...

Lukas Haas and Wilson Cruz in Meth Head (2013)
Lukas Haas spirals into oblivion in 'Meth Head' -- Trailer
Lukas Haas and Wilson Cruz in Meth Head (2013)
The first time moviegoers saw Lukas Haas was when he was the 9-year-old Amish boy in Witness, and ever since then we’ve watched him grow up.

The haunted little boy in Lady in White (1988), the alien-fighting teen in Mars Attacks! (1996), and the imperious drug kingpin known as The Pin in Brick (2005) are just a few of his memorable roles. But now he’s taking the lead in the new indie drama Meth Head, as a young man who falls into a Shame-like spiral after getting hooked on the stuff that makes even the most clean-cut souls break bad.

Check it out after the jump.

The Hilarious Files: James Roday and Dule Hill Preview Psych Season 6
Best known for its outrageous homages to cultural icons, including fun references to films and television shows past, as Psych prepares for its sixth season, stars James Roday and Dule Hill chatted a bit “tongue in cheek” with the press in a recent conference call about to expect as the hysterical series about a fake psychic detective returns.

Could you talk a little about the upcoming Halloween, Indiana Jones, and Cuckoo’s Nest-inspired episodes?

James: Yes, we did in fact deliver on those other ones. Those are in the can. Those are fully produced and being mixed.

Dule: We also have a “Shining” episode this year too.

James: “Shining” is what you get in place of “Clue.” So we still felt like we should swing big. Halloween is the vampire episode. And I think it’s airing the week of Halloween.

Are there any special guest stars in the Halloween episode?...

Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych (2006)
James Roday previews 'Psych' at Comic-Con, teases season 6 (Hint: Someone has a new romance!)
Dulé Hill and James Roday Rodriguez in Psych (2006)
There’s nothing like your first time — at Comic-Con, that is. And James Roday remembers his perfectly. “We got really scared, because we work in Vancouver, and we didn’t really have that great of a sense of how crazy our fanbase was. It was like, ‘This is going to be a nightmare. We’re going to walk out there, and it’s going to be half-empty, and it’s going to be really sad for us.’ And we stepped out onto that stage, and it was at capacity, standing room only, people going crazy, people being turned away. It...

Psych Review: The Christmas Spectacular!
Psych delivered not one, but Two all new episodes of the show this week, giving fans twice the reasons to laugh.

First up, we were treated to "The Polarizing Express," the first Christmas episode the show has tackled since its third season. It gave us an in-depth take on what life would be like in Santa Barbara if Shawn hadn’t returned five years ago.

We enjoyed a look into Shawn’s active imagination and found our beloved characters doing some pretty interesting things, if not shocking, things.

Henry was a disheveled mess who didn’t clean dishes and smelled “like Bigfoot.” Gus was married to Keisha Knight-Pulliam. Lassiter was the Chief of the police department/ Buzz was a detective and the real Chief was... well... I’m not really sure what she was, but Carlton sure was getting handsy.

Juliet, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found,...

Psych Summer Finale – One, Maybe Two, Ways Out – Review
You’ve probably already heard me say that Psych has let me down once or twice this season. It’s still easily one of my favorite shows, but a couple of episodes struck me as not quite being up to par. Last week’s episode delivered the goods, and tonight’s summer finale One, Maybe Two, Ways Out is among the best the series has produced.

With Nestor Carbonell returning, and Franke Potente guest-starring, things take a spy turn, and Shawn and Gus are knee-deep in a complicated situation they don’t really understand.

The action is turned up, Shawn can’t figure out who to trust, and the new man in Jules’ life isn’t helping him concentrate. Of course, he may be distracted by a couple of other 80′s guests, but this isn’t an episode that leaves him a lot of downtime to get his bearings. Shot at,...

Curt Smith Talks Psych Episode 5.08 Shawn 2.0
The Tears for Fears singer, Curt Smith makes his first appearance on the USA Network series

In the 1980s, Curt Smith was one-half of the highly-successful pop duo Tears for Fears. These days, Smith is still performing his music and you'll be able to see and hear his work on tonight's Psych entitled Episode 5.08: Shawn 2.0, where he will appear as a guest-starring actor. You will also be able to hear his cover version of the Psych theme song as well. Smith recently held a conference call to discuss his involvement on Psych and here's what he had to say:

I want to know what can you tell us about the Tears for Fears version or the Curt Smith version of the Psych theme song. Obviously it's become a very popular theme song. It's a very fun theme song. How did you sort of want to reinterpret it?

Curt Smith...

Psych Q & A With Special Guest Curt Smith Plus Episode Preview
I have to come right out and be honest, and tell you that, as huge a fan of Psych as I am, one or two episodes this season have let me down a bit. I’m not absolutely sure why that is, but I think that we have come to a point in the show where overplaying the general doubt in Spencer’s abilities is actually annoying.

Much like the oft-compared (even rather brilliantly within the show) The Mentalist, or something like House, after the first dozen or so times our heroes turn out to be right, it would be nice if the rest of the cast opened to the idea that they might be right.

Despite my misgivings about a couple of episodes, you don’t want to miss the next one. With not only Lost‘s Nestor Carbonell, but also Tears for Fears‘ Curt Smith appearing both in...

Wake-Up Video: Gary Jules’ ‘Mad World’
A very happy birthday today to Curt Smith, former singer for British band Tears for Fears. The duo were an MTV staple in the 1980s, with hits like “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Head Over Heels” and “Mad World.” The latter song was given a second life when it was covered by Gary Jules for the 2001 film “Donnie Darko.” The movie didn’t really pick up steam until it hit DVD, and the slow burn for the song was the same: Though it was released in 2002, it became a hit over a year later. Most recently, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert performed the Jules version back in April. The video manages to capture the tone of “Donnie Darko” without including any shots of Jake Gyllenhaal.
