Amazon has pulled the plug on its revival series of Australian soap Neighbours after two seasons, leaving many questioning whether this was the most pointless series rescue ever. Having been on screens for almost 40 years, the long-running soap was originally axed in 2022, and saw out the final episode with a huge number of cameo appearances by many of the familiar faces who have been given their big break on the show over the years. Soon after that, Amazon Freevee agreed to pick up the series and bring it back to screens less than a year after its cancelation, making the huge celebratory series ending redundant. Now, it looks like fans have been disappointed once again.

The high-profile finale in 2022 included appearances by pop star Kylie Minogue and actors Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie, among others, and the viewership of that episode rocketed to a height the show had not seen for many years.

After a two-year run on Amazon Freevee/Prime Video in the U.S. and the UK, among other territories, “Neighbours” will conclude its run in December, it was announced on Thursday.

According to a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the show is “resting” with all remaining new episodes from the show’s current 40th anniversary season continuing to air on Prime Video around the world and Australia’s Network Ten four times a week until the end of the year.

The show promises it will continue providing all the “big soapie twists and turns that our viewers love” at its conclusion.

A New Chapter is a direct continuation of Neighbours, which originally aired on Aussie TV for 38 seasons from 1985 to 2022. Maoyan, the Chinese film ticketing agency and film distribution company, has issued a warning that profits for 2022 are set to take a steep dive. Revenue for last year is expected to come in at RMB2.27 billion and RMB2.37 billion, representing a decrease of up to 31% compared with 2021. Profit attributable to the owners of the company will range between approximately RMB70 million and RMB120 million, representing a decrease of approximately 67% to 81% compared with attributable profit in 2021, which had been RMB369 million. The company’s fortunes are closely allied to the trend of the mainland Chinese box office. Nationwide theatrical grosses took a huge tumble in the second half of the year as the government stepped up its battle against the Covid outbreak, causing the full year box office to fall by 36%.

The company is now trying to diversify away from cinema ticketing with moves into distribution and production.

Updated: It appears unlikely that at least one of two CBS Media Ventures-distributed syndicated daytime talk shows, The Doctors and Daily MailTV, will continue beyond this season. We hear CBS employees were told today that both shows hailing from Jay McGraw’s Stage 29 Prods., are facing a possible end. Former The Doctors host Dr. Ian Smith is taking a diagnostic approach to endemic “racial discrimination and retaliation” issues with the syndicated series from ViacomCBS and the Dr. Phil McGraw’s production company. This comes after CBS boss George Cheeks empathetically supposedly told a fired Dr. Smith earlier this year that the situation should’ve “never happened.” and would “be investigated Asap.”

“To date, the CBS investigation remains incomplete,” an “unlawful discriminatory practices” complaint filed in recent days with the New York State Division of Human Rights and U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states (read it here)

Ian Smith, the former host of the syndicated daytime talk show “The Doctors,” has filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New York State Division of Human Rights alleging racial discrimination and retaliation on the part of ViacomCBS and the show’s producers.

Smith, who was named as the sole host of the show in a drastic reformatting last August, claims his efforts to make the show more inclusive were repeatedly rebuffed by white producers until he was terminated in early January and replaced by a white host.

The complaint lists ViacomCBS, Stage 29 Productions and executive producers Patty Ciano and Jay McGraw as respondents.

A new season of The Doctors is coming soon but it will have a very different look. The thirteenth season of the syndicated series will premiere in September with a new studio, new format, and a new host.

Dr. Ian Smith is taking charge of the series and previous hosts Sonia Batra, Judy Ho, Nita Landry, Andrew Ordon, and Travis Stork will not be returning. This season will have the focus of helping people deal with the times we're living in at the moment.

Emmy-winning syndicated talk show The Doctors is getting a major makeover in the coronavirus era. The long-running series will launch with a new format and sole host, Dr. Ian Smith, when it premieres its 13th season on September 21. Production is slated to begin this month.

With the theme “Take Your Power Back,” the new The Doctors is designed to empower viewers to break through the fear and uncertainty of current times, producers say. The season-long series will provide ongoing tips and solutions to get Americans into fighting shape physically, mentally and emotionally.

The daytime talk show “The Doctors” will feature a new format and host when it returns for Season 13 next month, the show’s producers announced on Wednesday.

Set to premiere on Sept. 21, the new season will see the show shift to a solo-host format with Ian Smith set to take the reins. Previous hosts Travis Stork, Andrew Ordon, Judy Ho, Nita Landry and Sonia Batra will not return for the new episodes.
