Donald Trump owes his continued freedom — and very likely his second term as president — to the fact that he was allowed to exploit the fundamental American right and hard-won tradition of due process, which is designed to protect an individual from arbitrary, weaponized prosecution and state terror.
But as he celebrates his 100th day back in the Oval Office, Trump and his administration are working overtime to ensure that those very same due process rights are gutted or taken away from everyone who is not named Donald John Trump.

Donald Trump’s inaugural committee raised a record amount of cash, collecting $239 million from corporations and wealthy sycophants, several of whom would become nominees for positions in the administration. The previous record was $107 million, which the committee raised for Trump’s 2017 inauguration.
The massive total is another sign of the degree to which the super wealthy are buying influence in the Trump administration — or at least of the degree to which they believe they can.
Several Trump appointees donated to the committee, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

McLintock!(1963) was both true to form and a departure for star John Wayne. By this point, he'd become well-known for his presence in Western films. And the formula remained crowd-pleasing even if not always a sure-fire win. Just three years prior, Wayne's The Alamo (1960) had performed below expectations, leaving Wayne disappointed. With McLintock!, he would return to the Western genre yet again, but this time on his own terms. The movie itself would take a more comedic approach than viewers had, perhaps, previously seen for Wayne to great success.

The FBI will officially be headed by two men with no experience in the bureau, and a lot of blind loyalty towards President Donald Trump.
On Sunday, the president announced that former Secret Service agent and right-wing podcaster Dan Bongino has been selected to serve as deputy and second in command to recently confirmed FBI director Kash Patel.

In recent months, Donald Trump asked advisers for a “list” of staff at the National Archives who he should purge, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Trump said the list was to include, but not be limited to, Archives officials involved with the effort to get the Biden-era Justice Department to help recover classified material Trump hoarded at Mar-a-Lago after he left office the first time. Who's your favorite Batman villain? Most will say the Joker, some might say Catwoman or Bane, but there's options galore. Did you know, though, that within Batman's expansive rogues gallery also lies the original Bat-man? Yes, Count Dracula has appeared in three Batman movies — but you can only watch one of them.
This isn't as out-there a pairing as it looks. Batman mostly fights other freaks in costumes -- from clowns to cats, to scarecrows, to rejected quiz show hosts -- but some of the Dark Knight's nemeses are downright supernatural. Take Ra's al Ghul, the Demon's Head, who has stayed young and fit for 700 years with the help of the magical Lazarus Pit, a functional Fountain of Youth.

On Wednesday evening, one day into her tenure as U.S. attorney general, Pam Bondi announced the end of the Kleptocracy Initiative, launched by the Justice Department in 2010 to battle high-level corruption worldwide and return ill-gotten funds to victims of financial crimes. The former Florida attorney general and legal counsel to President Trump during his first impeachment trial, who spent the last several years as a corporate lobbyist, also closed the KleptoCapture task force, created under Ag Merrick Garland in 2022 to target Russian oligarchs violating U.S. economic sanctions imposed...

As the second administration of President Trump continues its crackdown on veteran federal workers deemed insufficiently loyal — or just not enthusiastic enough about enacting the Project 2025 agenda — his Justice Department is now purging federal prosecutors who made cases against Capitol rioters.
On Friday, Ed Martin, interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, who has espoused conspiracy theories about the 2020 election being stolen from Trump, announced the firings of approximately 30 attorneys formerly assigned to some 1,600 Capitol siege prosecutions. The terminated individuals received notice at around 5 p.m. ahead of the weekend.

In one of his last acts as president, Joe Biden has issued preemptive pardons to several people Donald Trump and his allies perceive to be their enemies and have threatened to criminally investigate. The pardons were issued just hours before Biden is set to welcome Trump to the White House for tea prior to the latter’s presidential inauguration.

Donald Trump has repeatedly bashed Bill Barr since the former attorney general refused to buy into the lie that the 2020 election was rigged. He won’t have that problem with Pam Bondi, should the Senate confirm her as the new leader of the Justice Department.
In the aftermath of Trump’s loss to Joe Biden in 2020, Bondi tried to advance the former president’s baseless claims of election fraud, and falsely claimed that Trump “won Pennsylvania.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert didn't express much enthusiasm over special counsel Jack Smith's report on Donald Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Instead, Stephen Colbert admitted the report doesn't matter.
Smith resigned from his position but also released a summary of his findings. According to the report, there was ample evidence to convict Trump over January 6 had he not won re-election.
"Boom! When people find out what Trump did, his chance of being re-elected two months ago are going to be pretty slim," Colbert joked during his Tuesday night monologue. "It's all true. And you can see it dramatzied in the new Marvel series 'What If...Anything Mattered Anymore,'" he continued.
Colbert noted Smith couldn't continue with his case because laws prohibit the prosecution of a sitting president. The late-night TV host called these regulations "insane" and argued that holding a president to the...

The View had a double dose of Donald Trump-related “Hot Topics” on Tuesday’s (January 14) edition, and both of them brought on some disagreements between the cohosts. First, the panelists — Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin (since Sara Haines was out for reasons unexplained) — reacted to the release of Jack Smith’s report on his investigation into Trump’s election interference attempts in 2020 with some very scattered takes. Behar, for one, thought it meant “adios to democracy” that Trump wasn’t held criminally liable for the actions described in the report and predicted “trouble” for the country in his next term in the White House. Goldberg argued that statutes of limitations shouldn’t apply to situations like this, and Hostin agreed with that, maintaining that for the sake of American history, Trump should be re-tried (after finding out from producers that his original charges were...

The 130-page report is damning, and concludes that “the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial.”

Donald Trump would have been convicted of illegally trying to overturn the result of the 2020 U.S. election had he not become President again, according to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s partially released report.
The evidence against Trump was “sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial,” Smith wrote in the portion of the report that was released early Tuesday. Trump has already hit back on his Truth Social platform to say the findings were “fake” and criticize the process.
“But for Mr Trump’s election [in 2024] and imminent return to the presidency, the office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial,” said the Department of Justice report, which went into further detail around the case. Addressing why the case was closed, the report noted that the U.S. Constitution forbids the prosecution of a sitting president.

Seth Meyers ditched the typical late night hosting attire of a suit years ago but, as Donald Trump gears up to begin his second term, the NBC host is getting worried that he’ll soon be hosting the show in the nude.
Returning from his holiday hiatus on Tuesday night, Meyers mourned having to throw out an entire “A Closer Look” segment that his team had already written, because Trump said so many “insane” things during his Tuesday press conference.
Among those things? Wayne Gretzky should run for Prime Minister in Canada, special counsel Jack Smith “executes” people, and that Trump plans to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
“My man is in mid-season form already!” Meyers marveled. “This brings us to a segment called, ‘I Can’t Believe We’re F–king Doing This Again.'”

The Florida judge who has overseen one of the criminal cases against Donald Trump has blocked the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s final report on his investigations.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ordered that the Justice Department be temporarily enjoined from releasing the report as the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals reviews the issue.
After Trump was elected in November, Smith moved to dismiss both of his pending cases against him. They included charges that Trump withheld classified documents after he left the White House, and other charges that he conspired to remain in power even though he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden. Trump pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Even though the cases against Trump were dismissed, Smith has continued an appeal relating to two co-defendants in the classified documents investigation, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira.

A federal appeals court has affirmed a jury’s $5 million sexual abuse and defamation verdict against Donald Trump, rejecting the president-elect’s effort for a new trial in the case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll.
“On review of abuse of discretion, we conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” the three appellate judges wrote. “Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination claimed errors affected his substantial rights as required to warrant a new trial.”
A jury in 2023 found that Trump sexually abused Carroll in an incident at the Bergdorf-Goodman department store in 1996. The jury also found that Trump defamed her in statements he made in 2022, and awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.

In their latest motion to dismiss Donald Trump’s hush money conviction, his attorneys are citing President Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter.
“President Biden argued that ‘raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,'” Trump’s legal team wrote in a filing today. “These comments amounted to an extraordinary condemnation of Biden’s own DOJ. This is the same DOJ that coordinated and oversaw the politically motivated election interference witch hunts targeting President Trump by disgraced Special Counsel Jack Smith, the other biased prosecutors in Smith’s special counsel’s office, and others. This is the same DOJ that sent Matthew Colangelo to Da Bragg to help unfairly target President Trump in this empty and lawless case.”
Read the Trump motion to dismiss.
Trump was convicted earlier year of 34 New York state felony counts related to hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Batman Dracula: Andy Warhol’s Quirky 1964 Batman Film (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Forget everything you know about Batman on screen—there’s a weird, wild gem you’ve probably never heard of. Back in 1964, Andy Warhol, yes Andy Warhol, made his own Batman movie. And no, he didn’t ask DC for permission. Batman Dracula was Warhol’s DIY tribute to the Dark Knight, shot on a 16mm Bolex camera and only ever shown at his art exhibits. Talk about the underground.
The movie, starring Jack Smith as Bruce Wayne and Count Dracula, is a total trip. No flashy explosions, no CGI, just a surreal, almost abstract chase across Long Island and New York City, culminating in a weird showdown between Batman and Dracula. Warhol didn’t care for typical superhero rules—this was his twisted take, full of camp and weirdness. Batman and Dracula? Perfect combo, right? And Warhol was all in.

Donald Trump and his incoming administration officials think Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are suckers. They’re not shy about saying it.
Within the past month, Biden, Harris, and the current administration have repeatedly vowed an orderly, peaceful, fully cooperative transfer of power between Biden and Trump — a twice-impeached former president and convicted felon whom the president, vice president, and Democratic leaders regularly denounced as a “fascist” tyrant and clear threat to the constitutional order.
It hasn’t just been the legal transfer and procedures to which Democrats have committed themselves.

The cohosts of The View have long had strong opinions that Donald Trump is guilty of various crimes and deserves to spend time in prison for them. So in response to the development that all of the pending charges against him have been dropped and his sentencing for the 34 felony counts he was found guilty of is indefinitely suspended, well, they had a lot to say. On Tuesday’s (November 26) show, Whoopi Goldberg introduced the news that Jack Smith, special prosecutor, moved to dismiss his cases and joked, “After all that time and money, are we going to get a rebate?” Joy Behar was the first to respond to the story, saying, “It kind of shows you there’s no such thing as karma, doesn’t it? It’s like the Easter Bunny and affordable housing. It doesn’t exist.” Behar then took a more serious tone and said, “I...

Just less than two months before Donald Trump returns to the White House, the former and future president saw two of his most treacherous legal battles end with whimpers.
Reading the clear writing on the wall, Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith filed paperwork Monday to drop the felony charges against Trump related to 2020 election subversion that led to the bloody January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“The Department’s position is that the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated,” Smith said in the short filing before the federal court in Washington, DC. “This outcome is not based on the merits or strength of the case against the defendant.”

Special Counsel Jack Smith is dropping the Justice Department’s criminal election interference and classified documents cases against Donald Trump, according to motions filed Monday in D.C. court.
The cases were unlikely to see a trial or resolution given Trump’s victory in November’s election, and the incoming administration’s imminent control of the Justice Department. Monday’s motions by Smith mark the end of the government’s furious and fraught saga seeking accountability for Trump’s involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt said that one of Donald Trump’s first priorities in office should be to exact revenge. He suggested that Trump get rid of any Justice Department employees who were involved in cases that brought charges against the former president.

A New York judge has delayed ruling on whether Donald Trump’s hush money conviction should be overturned in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity.
Judge Juan Merchan granted a stay of the current deadlines until Nov. 19, when prosecutors will spell out what they see as the “appropriate steps” going forward given Trump’s election victory. The judge had set today as the date when he would issue a ruling on whether to toss out Trump’s conviction.
Earlier this year, Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to porn actress Stormy Daniels. Sentencing has been scheduled for Nov. 26.
Merchan had delayed sentencing until after the presidential election, but he also was reviewing a Supreme Court decision that presidents could not be held criminally liable for official acts while in office. Even though the hush money...

Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election in convincing fashion, trouncing Kamala Harris in the Electoral College and becoming the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years. He claimed during his victory speech that he has “an unprecedented and powerful mandate” to do what he wants — and what he wants, judging by promises he’s made on the campaign trail, is terrifying.
He’ll also be far better-equipped to carry out his agenda than he was during his first term in office.

Donald Trump — the twice impeached former president, Jan. 6 coup leader, convicted felon, adjudicated sexual abuser, and man who mismanaged the 2020 economic implosion and coronavirus disaster that killed more than 1 million people in this country — has persuaded American voters to give him another term in the White House.
After a campaign marked by nativism, open bigotry, and aspiring authoritarianism, Trump triumphed over Vice President Kamala Harris, despite being denounced by several of those who worked most closely with him in his first term as a “fascist.” The 45th president will become the 47th in late January.

Updated with more details: Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in a remarkable comeback that will return him to the White House, after a roller-coaster campaign during which he was indicted four times, criminally convicted and survived two assassination attempts.
“This will truly be the golden age of America,” Trump told supporters in West Palm Beach, Fl as the Associated Press called the vital state of Pennsylvania for him at 11:25 p.m. Pt, essentially assuring an electoral win with Alaska assured to fall in his column. Wisconsin may prove to go for the GOP too if current trends out of the state continue, which would add to battleground state wins in North Carolina and Georgia.
“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Trump added to cheers from the self-declared “Maga movement.” Taking another tone, Trump said: “It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us.

This week’s Saturday Night Live featured an special election edition of the game show parody What’s That Name?, where contestants struggle to remember the names of people in their lives. Host John Mulaney played a smug contestant who quickly named Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff and Trump investigator Jack Smith, raving to Michael Longfellow’s host about how invested he is in this presidential campaign, which he dubbed “the most important election in American history.

While most news outlets have focused on Tony Hinchcliffe’s comments during Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally, Jon Stewart zoomed in on another, more pressing part of the Trump campaign: his anti-immigration rhetoric. Specifically, “The Daily Show” host went in on Trump’s mass deportation plan.
Trump has said that if he’s elected, on “day one” he will begin deporting people from the United States. In various interviews, the former president has also said that the number of people he plans to deport ranges from “2 million” to “21 million at least.”
On Monday night, Stewart assured his audience that Trump probably had a “very detailed and precise plan” for his mass deportation. He then systematically broke down all the reasons why that isn’t the case at all.
“We’re only deporting people who have come here illegally. Or people who have come here legally but sneaky legally.

The political comic kicked things off with addressing the presidential candidates’ respective final pushes to get out the vote ahead of Election Day Nov. 5. He quipped about Beyoncé’s appearance at Kamala Harris’ event and promptly laid into the headline-churning Donald Trump rally in his own backyard at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

The Supreme Court won’t hear X Corp.’s challenge to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s access to former President Donald Trump’s Twitter DMs.
In his investigation into Trump’s efforts to remain in power after the 2020 election, Smith obtained a search warrant for the messages, but Twitter was also prevented from disclosing the warrant to the former president.
X Corp., the successor to Twitter, has challenged the gag order, arguing that it violated the First Amendment.
The high court justices declined to take the case, but made no comment.
The Elon Musk-owned company initially balked at complying with Smith’s investigation, and was fined $350,000 by a district court judge for its delay. It turned over the data, but challenged the terms of the non-disclosure order.
An appeals court, though, sided with the district judge.

Jack Smith’s latest filing in the election interference case against Donald Trump dropped some bombshells this week, but Seth Meyers latched onto one in particular on Thursday night: a “Star Trek” reference apparently made by Trump.
It’s alleged in the filing that, during a call with his lawyer Sidney Powell — who initially pushed a conspiracy theory of election interference involving Hugo Chavez before flipping on Trump and pleading guilty to six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duties — Trump muted the call, called her claims “crazy,” and referenced “Star Trek” in describing her allegations.
“Now here’s my biggest question: what was the ‘Star Trek’ reference?” Meyers asked seriously. “Was it original series or “Next Generation”? Hell, if it was DS9, I might vote for him. Ooh! Is it the famous episode where Picard tries to communicate with the aliens who only speak in allegories?...

Stephen Colbert thought he knew everything there was to know about Donald Trump's alleged criminal activity around the 2020 election. However, new information released by Special Counsel Jack Smith left the Late Show host pleasantly surprised.
Trump was charged with a host of crimes related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and enter a slate of fake electors. But when Vice President Mike Pence didn't go along with the plan and every court case was thrown out, Trump's scheme fell apart.
However, the ex-president received good news in July 2024. The Supreme Court ruled that a president essentially had immunity if they acted in their official capacity. Earlier this week, Jack Smith attempted to counter that ruling by releasing more details about Trump's actions around the election and framing the Republican as an office-seeker, not holder.

Liz Cheney decried Donald Trump’s “depraved cruelty” in a blistering speech that was her first appearance with Vice President Kamala Harris since endorsing her last month.
Noting that she has never voted for a Democrat, Cheney praised Harris for “working to unite reasonable people from across the political spectrum.” The joint appearance, designed to win over Republicans and independents, also was symbolic, as it was held in Ripon, Wi, regarded as the birthplace of the GOP.
CNN and MSNBC carried the remarks; Fox News very briefly dipped into the speech.
