Favorite Attractions (and a Few Overlooked) at Disney California Adventure
Image
Back in 2001, Disneyland Resort opened a second theme park gate – Disney California Adventure – dedicated to the Golden State and all its glory. In the early days of operation, the park suffered from a lack of entertainment and inspiration, and an unavoidable comparison to the masterpiece across the street named Disneyland. But after a rocky start, Disney California Adventure has been slowly improving to where it is now considered one of the great theme parks in the country.

Cars Land – opened in 2012 – rivals any other intellectual property (IP)-themed land in the world, which is quite a feat among competition including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and Pandora: The World of Avatar. The 2021 opening of Avengers Campus has made the park the go-to place for full-on Marvel immersion. With even more expansion on the horizon, the future looks brighter than ever for Disneyland’s second gate.

“Phooey!” Happy Birthday Donald Duck!
Image
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Look who turned 90 years young! If you are looking for the lowdown on this cantankerous and cranky birthday duck, you’ve come to the right place. Donald Duck burst onto the scene June 9, 1934, and his popularity has continued to climb ever since. Donald has a reputation for being a little “ill tempered” from time to time, but we actually think he’s a little misunderstood, so let’s give our #1 duck a little love, with a look at some of the highlights of his illustrious life and career.

What Kind of Duck is Donald?

Donald may have more of an “everyduck” appearance, but he is actually modeled after a specific breed – the American Pekin. This is where Donald gets his bright white plumage, and golden bill and legs.

Disney animator Dick Lundy is credited with developing Donald as a character, and artists Dick Huemer...

Eric Adjepong
Top Chef: Kentucky has just four contestants as of the Thursday, March 7 episode and we need to take a moment to marvel: It's three women and a black man. Eric Adjepong, Sara Bradley, Kelsey Barnard Clark and Michelle Minori are all that remain of the 15 contestants who put their knives to good use throughout season 16. With just one more round before the finals, Top Chef: Kentucky could have an all-female final competition. In "The Tase of Macau," airing Thursday, March 7 at 8 p.m. on Bravo, the four contestants must cook with the world's smelliest fruit, durian. The fruit is a delicacy in...

10 Great Newcastle Signings By Terrible Managers
Nigel French/Empics Sport

If Alan Pardew’s recent successes and the 5th place finish he lead the club to in 2012 has proved one thing, it’s that underwhelming managers can manage spectacular things. It might be unfair to cast Pardew off entirely as a terrible manager – it is a close run thing there for a while and the jury should still be out – and over the years Newcastle have been stuck with some seriously poor managers.

But there have been some surprising moments of over-achievement from even the very worst – including Gordon Lee, the man generally held as the very worst manager ever to take control at St. James’ Park. If nothing else, this at least offers the lesson that we shouldn’t always trust generic opinions either way, and indeed that high-points are indeed possible by otherwise irredeemable managers.

But who is the greatest player to have defied...

book review: A Disney Book You Don't Know About...And Others You Should
I’ve run out of shelf space for books relating to the life, career, and films of Walt Disney, but it seems there are always more coming along—and a surprising number of them have worthwhile new material to share. But the one even I didn’t know about was published some months ago by the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. When you visit the Museum—which you absolutely should—you’ll find that photographs are not allowed inside the exhibit rooms. That’s why there’s a handsome book called Picturing The Walt Disney Family Museum with photography by Jim Smith, text by Richard Benefield,…...
