Best known now for her roles in dark TV shows like "Yellowjackets" and "Fallout," Ella Purnell is one of those performers whose filmography goes much further back than you'd think. She's the type of actor where you'll watch an older movie for the first time in a while and realize, "Wait, that was her?" I myself had that exact realization when I rewatched "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" for the first time since it came out in 2016. Elsewhere, on Twitter, it seems other people are having the same realization about the 2013 movie "Kick-Ass 2."
As "Kick-Ass" fans may recall, the superhero sequel featured a storyline about Mindy, aka Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), trying to transition from a life of fighting crime to one of navigating regular high school drama. In doing so, she runs afoul of mean girl Brooke (Claudia Lee), who bullies Mindy in ways that might...

It’s been more than two decades since Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams’ classic Mean Girls hit the theatre. But the movie’s grip on pop culture hasn’t loosened one bit. It’s a 2004 teen comedy that grew into a generational favorite. Now, its legacy is still alive and well on streaming. The movie, which earned $130 million at the box office, is currently sitting in the Top 10 movies list of Paramount+.
While much of its success has been credited to Tina Fey’s sharp writing, the movie’s success might never have happened if it weren’t for the perfect cast. It might have turned out differently if not for Rachel McAdams and the casting twist.

The network has ordered a sixth season of the competition show — and announced that Nick Cannon will take over as host. In 2004, a movie premiered that would change the way Americans talked about high school forever while catapulting some of its stars straight to the A-list. To an entire generation of Millennial moviegoers, Mean Girls is the defining film of the high school experience, and its legacy continues to impact today's teenagers, who are still trying to make fetch happen. For Seyfried, who played the air-headed, weather-watching Karen Smith, Mean Girls was her feature-film debut, and it introduced her to audiences who would continue filling theaters for her over the next decade as she starred in giant blockbusters such as Mamma Mia! and Les Misérables.

Mean Girls was a major success when it came out in 2004, but its popularity has only grown over the years. The movie further grew into a franchise that includes a made-for-tv sequel, a Broadway stage musical, and a film adaptation of the stage play.
However, even with all the additions, the 2004 teen comedy movie has become a cult classic. Amanda Seyfried is forever indebted to Mean Girls.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Seyfried reflected on the 2004 teen comedy and the “unadulterated fun” she had while making the film when she was 17.
Host Josh Horowitz reminded Seyfried how loved the film is to this day. “Until the day you die, a 14-year-old girl will come up to you every day and quote you as if it just came out the day before.” Horowitz said.
“I hope they quote it on my grave,” said Seyfried, who played Karen Smith in the movie. “That’s an organic moment. It was, in many ways, a perfect movie, and people relate to it, still. It connected us, and it continues to. I will always be excited to talk about it,” adding “Any day, I’ll honor that movie for what it did for me as a person.”

Amanda Seyfried has been an A-list actress for the past two decades, and her in-demand status in Hollywood has resulted in a sizable net worth. Seyfried shot to stardom in 2004 with her film debut as the unintelligent Karen Smith in Mean Girls. This led to plum roles in hugely successful movies including Mamma Mia!, Les Misrables, and Jennifer's Body. The 2020s have thus far seen Seyfried's career continue to soar, as she earned her first Oscar nomination for her role as Marion Davies in Mank and won both a Golden Globe and Emmy for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu miniseries, The Drop Out.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Amanda Michelle Seyfried grew up with her mother, Ann, an occupational therapist, and her father, Jack, a pharmacist. She has an older sister, Jennifer, who is a musician. Seyfried's early life was marked by a passion for the arts, which...

Countless actresses auditioned for Mean Girls, and Ashley Tisdale was one of them.
The High School Musical breakout stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Monday, where she was asked by a fan if it was true she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the hit 2004 film.
“Gosh, it was so long ago,” Tisdale said. “I just remember screen-testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen-tested. That was like, eons ago, obviously.”
Amanda Seyfried eventually went on to portray Karen, and the film marked the Emmy-winning actress’ biggest role at the time. Shortly after, Tisdale landed The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then High School Musical. Lively starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before landing the lead role in Gossip Girl.
During her appearance on the late night show, Tisdale also recounted her audition for Mean Girls.

A writing credit is probably a bit much, but a little acknowledgement might be due to Ashley Tisdale, who said she ad-libbed a line during her audition for the original Mean Girls that wound up in the final cut of the movie.
On Watch What Happens Live Tuesday, Tisdale was asked about going out for the role of Karen Smith, the lovable airhead eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. The actress said she screen-tested for the film alongside Blake Lively and didn’t remember much about the audition except one part.

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

The Plastics have a set of arbitrary rules that dictate their behavior, including wearing certain colors on specific days and limiting hairstyles and wardrobe choices. These rules are enforced by Regina, the leader of the Plastics, to maintain control and exclusivity within the group. The rule about ex-boyfriends being off-limits to friends drives the plot and leads to a love triangle between Cady, Aaron, and Regina.
"On Wednesdays, we wear pink" is an iconic line from Mean Girls, but it's not the only rule the Plastics have to follow. In the 2004 teen comedy, Cady Heron, who has spent her entire life in Africa with her zoologist parents, begins attending an American high school and becomes acquainted with the Plastics, a clique of popular girls ruled by Regina George. When Cady sits at lunch with the Plastics after being invited by Regina, she says via voiceover that sitting with the Plastics...

Tina Fey agreed to return to 'Mean Girls' if she didn't have to sing. The 53-year-old actress and her co-star Tim Meadows reprised their roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall from the original movie in the new big screen musical adaptation, but she admitted their involvement was conditional on them being able to just stick to dialogue.Tina told People magazine: "I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it."So I called Tim and I was like, 'Will you do it? I'll do it if you do it.' And we said yes, as long as we don't have to sing."Tina relished working with the 62-year-old actor - who previously reprised his role in 'Mean Girls 2' - again. She added: "It was fun. The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Two characters, Janis (played by Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), film themselves singing a song that sets the stage for the story to follow. They're troubadours for the TikTok set - and this is a "Mean Girls" for a new generation.
The Cady Heron, Regina George, and Aaron Samuels of the original film, released in 2004, had never seen an iPhone - those wouldn't debut for another three years. "Instagram," "Twitter," and "Snapchat" would have sounded like gibberish. Karen was just a name, and Donald Trump was just a business mogul.
Twenty years later . . . well, things are different. We've seen not just a technological revolution, but a cultural one. More Americans have become more aware of how rampant racism and discrimination - from microaggressions to hate crimes - are in this country. And while we...

Mean Girls (2024) incorporates elements from the Broadway show, including musical numbers, to bring a fresh spark to the familiar story. Reneé Rapp delivers a standout performance as Regina George, paying homage to the original character while infusing her own brand of menace. Mean Girls (2024) embraces an ironic self-awareness, allowing it to successfully balance nostalgia with its musical and remake elements.

Mean Girls 2024, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., and starring a vibrant ensemble including Renée Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey (who also wrote the screenplay), Jaquel Spivey, and many others brings the classic 2004 teen comedy into the modern era with updated cultural references and a more diverse cast. However, the film struggles to justify its existence beyond surface-level changes and ultimately falters in delivering a coherent, impactful story that offers little new or compelling.

Mean Girls' Janis Ian may have been a popular girl herself in middle school, as hinted by a quote about her original choreography for the Plastics' dance routine. Janis Ian is portrayed as a mean girl and potentially the true villain of the movie, especially through her treatment of her supposed friend, Cady. Janis Ian shares similarities with Regina George, as both make cruel comments disguised as jokes and have a desire for control and admiration from others.
Janis Ian ardently hates the popular girls known as the Plastics in Mean Girls, but one quote has viewers wondering if she might've been one herself in middle school. Lindsay Lohan leads the Mean Girls cast as Cady, a formerly homeschooled teenager who starts attending a typical high school for the first time. An actor's inaugural showing on the big screen often serves as an early glimpse of prodigious talent destined for greatness. Some command the spotlight right away despite little experience, while others emerge later as a fully formed tour de force after years of quiet cultivation. Kirsten Dunst's complex portrayal of Claudia in Interview with the Vampire at just 11 years old showcased her mature acting abilities and earned her a Golden Globe nomination, while late bloomers like Edward Norton or Julie Andrews may hone their abilities in obscurity before a breakout introductory performance finally earns overdue recognition.
While an actor’s first feature film can sometimes be a role that is small and unmemorable, there are some debut performances that are too good to forget. The actress told Yahoo Entertainment, in an interview published online Wednesday, that filming the commercials “was even more fun than it looked.”

The Mean Girls reunion commercial features Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, but Rachel McAdams is notably missing. Mean Girls has become a cultural phenomenon, with a successful film, a made-for-tv sequel, and a Broadway musical-turned-movie. Rachel McAdams is apparently not interested in making “fetch” happen, and she is one of the core Mean Girls cast members to not return for a recent Black Friday ad for Walmart. Now who doesn’t even go here?
Nearly 20 years after Mean Girls was released, Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith) reunited in the name of good deals and, yes, pink. But Rachel McAdams, who played leader of The Plastics Regina George, was noticeably absent, taking away so much from the reunion and instead bringing most of the attention back to her. While the “Mean Girls” musical movie is slated for 2024, the real “Mean Girls” sequel has just dropped in time for the 2023 holidays…thanks to a Walmart ad.
“At North Shore, some things never change,” lead actress Lindsay Lohan says in a voiceover as she reprises her iconic role of Cady Heron, almost 20 years since the 2004 film was released.
In this follow-up, the Burn Book is actually all the Walmart Black Friday deals that are blowing up North Shore High, where Gretchen Weiners’ (Lacey Chabert) teenage daughter is enrolled and where Cady (Lohan) is the guidance counselor. Turns out, the former Plastics all still wear pink on Wednesdays, but this time, it’s for carpool.
Gretchen is a typical stage mom, encouraging her teens to do perfect TikTok dances. Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) is putting her reporting skills on display still, and also continues to hang with Cady and Gretchen.

For every actor who lands a role in a TV show or movie, there's usually an actor (or several) who didn't get the part. Even Hollywood's biggest stars have to go through an audition process at some point, and that means dealing with rejection - for example, Blake Lively lost out to Amanda Seyfried on playing Karen Smith in "Mean Girls," while "Better Caul Saul" actor Bob Odenkirk was incredibly close to playing Steve Carrell's iconic Michael Scott in "The Office." Apparently, Adam Brody really wanted to play Star-Lord in "Guardians of the Galaxy," and Britney Spears came close to landing the role of Allie in "The Notebook."
For every actor who almost missed out on their iconic breakout roles, there are those who were almost cast instead. Some stars came down to the final few only to be beat out by another actor. Others were cast only to be fired and recast.

Actors Amanda Seyfied, Lindsay Lohan, and Lacey Chabert are reuniting for a secret new project after nearly more than 20 years, as the iconic ‘Mean Girls’ cast held a mini reunion for a special secret commercial project in Los Angeles.
In the classic teen-comedy 2004 film, Lohan, 37, portrayed Cady Heron, a student who had just moved from Africa and gets outcast at her high school.
It was there she was introduced to the seriousness of the social hierarchy as she met teen queen bees Karen Smith (Seyfried), Gretchen Wieners (Chabert), and their leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams) — they’re fiercely known as The Plastics. However, Rachel McAdams was not present at the reunion, according to People magazine.
The ladies were all smiles and Seyfried, 37, and Chabert, 41, and much like The Plastics, all of them came out wearing pink.
