That Wild Opening Scene In The Mummy Wasn't Actually CGI
Image
With its majestic panorama of Thebes, it's hard to believe that the wild opening scene in The Mummy is not actually CGI. Over the heads of Anubis and other gods of Ancient Egypt, the opening shots of The Mummy eventually settle on High Priest Imhotep and his lover, Anck-su-namun, the prize of Pharaoh Seti I. The opening, which also features a narration by Oded Fehr's Ardeth Bay, paints a dramatic and epic picture of Ancient Egypt before the action switches to the early 20th century.

Upon its release in 1999, The Mummy was a successful blockbuster because of its clever blend of humor, action, and stunning visual effects, which were developed by Industrial Light & Magic. Once Imhotep is awakened from his slumber, much of the film is devoted to impressive CGI sequences, including reanimating Imhotep's corpse and those of his guards, sandstorms, and various plagues, but much of it was also practical.

Daily Dead’s 2018 Holiday Gift Guide: Gift Ideas for the Kids (And the Kid in All of Us)
Welcome back for another installment of Daily Dead’s 2018 Holiday Gift Guide! Since we spent yesterday focused on grown-up toys, I thought it was only fair to dedicate today to all the little ghouls and fiends out there who also enjoy horror and sci-fi. With that in mind, I’ve put together this list of age-appropriate gift ideas that younger fans might dig this holiday season.

And now that we’re just about wrapped up with this year’s Gift Guide series (one day to go!), I just wanted to remind you that Daily Dead is once again giving away prize packs of movies and some horror goodies for 10 lucky readers, thanks to this year’s Hgg sponsor, Rlje Films. Winners will receive one copy of the upcoming Christmas anthology All the Creatures Were Stirring, one other title from Rlje Films, and a few other horror-tastic surprises, all just in time for the holidays.
