Et Tu Review: The Show Must Go On, By Any Means Necessary
Image
The pressure of the stage is a universal truth, a crucible where art is forged in ego, ambition, and quiet desperation. The tradition stretches from the amphitheatres of Greece to the boards of the Globe and into every regional playhouse today.

Et Tu places this timeless conflict within a modern American theater, transforming a production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar into the backdrop for a darkly comedic psychological spiral. The film centers on Brent, a director portrayed with simmering intensity by Lou Diamond Phillips, who finds himself pushed to his professional and mental limits by a hopelessly flawed cast.

His solution to the problem is both shocking and grimly logical within the movie’s satirical world: if the actors cannot be fixed, they must be removed. The story posits that the old theatrical warning, “the show must go on,” is not merely a statement of resilience but a command that might demand a blood sacrifice.

Sabaton Announce New Album Legends, Unleash Two Singles: Stream
Image
Sabaton have announced their 11th studio album, titled Legends, set for an October 17th release. The Swedish power-metal act has also unveiled two singles from the LP: “The Duelist” and “Lightning at the Gates.”

The band has long been known for tackling historic events and figures in its lyrics, and Legends is no different. The album touches on the legacies of Joan of Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, and sword-master Miyamoto Musashi.

The two new songs follow previously released tracks “Templars” and “Hordes of Khan,” which arrived in April and June, respectively.

Singer Joakim Brodén explains that Legends pairs well with the band’s 2014 album Heroes, stating, “Legends have always been woven into our music, and the Heroes album is the perfect example of that! I’m incredibly proud of Heroes and everything it stands for, so Legends is just a natural next step. It’s like the story continues...

‘Spartacus: House of Ashur’ Creator Reveals How (and Why) They Recast One of the Series' Most Important Roles
Image
Hail Caesar! However, in the time period within which the upcoming Starz drama, Spartacus: House of Ashur, is set, no one is really hailing him. At this point in history, Gaius Julius Caesar is not yet the powerful, all-conquering Roman general who became dictator of Rome. Original Spartacus creator, Steven DeKnight, has returned to the world depicted in Starz's epic series. Set in an alternate reality, one of the original series' most hated villains, Ashur (Nick Tarabay), does not meet his death at Mount Vesuvius, but instead is rewarded with the Ludus of Batiatus (John Hannah) for helping the Romans kill Spartacus and ending his rebellion. In the process of crafting his story for the upcoming sequel, DeKnight needed another key figure to return.

Todd Lasance — now of NCIS: Sydney — played the key role of Julius Caesar in the 2010 series. While DeKnight wanted the actor to return to the role in the upcoming sequel,...

Spartacus: House of Ashur reveals major character recast (and why it happened)
Image
Starz's upcoming Spartacus: House of Ashur series will bring back some familiar faces, but there's one new actor who will actually portray a returning character.

Spartacus has consistently maintained a loyal cult following over the past 15 years. The series began in 2010 and ran three seasons with a six-episode prequel series, Gods of the Arena. It was based on the historical character of the slave-turned-gladiator who breaks free and organizes a rebellion against Rome.

Among the various characters was Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay), a former slave who, following an injury, earned his freedom. A rather slimy conniver always ready to sell out anyone to save his own skin, Ashur seemingly met his end in season 2. This new series imagines that Ashur survived, aided the Romans in putting down Spartacus' rebellion, and was rewarded with his own gladiator house.

Julius Caesar is recast in Spartacus: House of Ashur

The show comes from Steven DeKnight,...

Lou Diamond Phillips Finds the Fault Is Not in Our Stars, But in His Props Master, in New 'Et Tu' Clip [Exclusive]
Image
Everyone who's ever trod the boards knows that Macbeth is the most cursed of all William Shakespeare's plays, but in the new black comedy thriller Et Tu, a production of Julius Caesar turns out to be no less ill-starred. In a new Collider-exclusive clip, director Brent takes his frustration out on his hapless props master. The film will premiere on digital and on-demand on July 25.

The film, which is named after Caesar's famous dying declaration, "Et tu, Brute?", centers around a woeful production that threatens to end in more mayhem and bloodshed than the Bard ever imagined. In the clip, Brent confronts his props master, Vicky (Jaclyn Mofid), wondering what the purpose of a props master even is, once everyone has their props and knows what to do with them. Before she can mount a defense, he relates that, on every production he's ever mounted, the props master...

‘To Kill A Monkey’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Efe Dead Or Alive?
Image
Netflix’s To Kill a Monkey was, to me, a tale of betrayal, of loss, and of grief. It was a story about a man named Efe, who came from an underprivileged background, who just wanted to provide for his family. But then he unwillingly entered a swamp from which he was never able to escape. So let’s find out what happened with Efe in the end, if he was able to save himself or if he fell prey to the system.

Spoiler Alert

Did Efe get Oboz killed?

A bond of blood, an association of trust and camaraderie, was broken with one wrong decision, and though it’s not explicitly shown, he could have done so much more to bring the odds in his favor. At the beginning of the series, we saw that Teacher was a psychotic person who, for no reason, threatened others just to establish his authority,...

Netflix to officially take a leap of faith on a ‘high-octane’ live-action Assassin’s Creed series adaptation
Leonardo Da Vinci
Sharpen your wrist-blades, ignore the vertigo, and prepare for a pub crawl with Leonardo Da Vinci because Netflix is taking Ubisoft’s iconic Assassin’s Creed video game franchise to screens for a “high-octane” live-action TV series adaptation! Emmy nominees Roberto Patino and David Wiener will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

“Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” the forthcoming show’s logline reads. “The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us,” Wiener and Patino say in a joint statement.

Every Classic Tragedy Reference in ‘Arcane’ Season 2’s Opening Including Phantom of the Opera
Image
Music is an integral aspect of Arcane‘s storytelling, and the opening sequence of season 2 gives this belief a whole new meaning. It features famous scenes or references from classic tragedies like William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera, as @flowchartkenYT pointed out in a YouTube short. Many fans noticed these similarities when the opening was first released.

All these references suggest a tragic future for the characters, which hasn’t come true yet. This makes one wonder if this was just a stylistic or aesthetic choice, or if there is more to these references? The characters share many similarities with the plays that are being referenced in the opening. So, let’s list them all out!

1. A Glimpse of Phantom of the Opera Through Viktor

Phantom of the Opera is a novel by Gaston Leroux, which was later turned into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Superman's Opening Text Perfectly Sets Up The Debut Of A Classic DC Comics Villain
Image
Mild spoilers follow.

James Gunn's "Superman" is the movie fans have been waiting for. This is a brilliant, corny, unapologetically earnest and sincere superhero movie that genuinely values niceness above brawn, the first movie in decades that understands every aspect of the character.

Gunn takes the Man of Tomorrow back to his roots — a genuinely nice guy who tries to do the right thing and use his powers for good, but who simply can't solve everything by himself. He also makes a rather smart choice of placing the story in a world that has already been introduced to superheroes. Superman is the biggest hero, but he is not the first. In the world of the movie, attacks by alien monsters are common, and robots are to be expected. Portals to other dimensions are not things to mock out of incredulity, but are real possibilities. This means the world, from the get-go,...

Beyond ‘Erotic Vagrancy’: TCM Reframes Legacy of ‘Cleopatra,’ Elizabeth Taylor, and the Director Who Went Down with the Sphinx
Image
It was an ordinary spring day in 1962 Italy… ordinary outside of a warm greeting between the very married superstar Elizabeth Taylor and the very married actor Richard Burton that a photographer happened to catch. The “kissing picture,” as it would become known, caught like wildfire, and the paparazzi never let up. Richard Burton dubbed the ensuing press storm “Le Scandale,” and the judgement of the world swiftly followed — included a condemnation from the Vatican newspaper calling it Taylor’s “erotic vagrancy.”

At the center of Le Scandale — one which TCM host Ben Mankiewicz calls the “biggest in the history of American celebrities” — was a mammoth film, perhaps the biggest in the history of American cinema: 20th Century Fox’s “Cleopatra.”

“The first photograph of them kissing as the rumors were circulating that they were involved was [taken by] a paparazzo hiding under a car, under like a Fiat… lying on the ground,...

The Boys Homelander Star Denies He Bases His Character Solely On President Trump
Image
The Boys Homelander actor Anthony Starr denies that his performance is based on President Trump. The Boys premiered on Prime Video in 2019 and quickly became one of the most popular superhero shows with its extreme violence and cutting political satire. The series follows a ragtag team as they try to take down Homelander, Vought International, and the rest of The Seven. Starr won over audiences with his stellar performance as the megalomaniac Homelander. As the show includes subtle, and other times not-so-subtle, political commentary, Homelander has been compared to President Trump. The Boys season 5 does not have a release date.

In an interview with theLA Times, Starr sets the record straight that his performance is not just a take on President Trump. He clarifies that he takes inspiration from other figures in history, and season 4 was partially based on Caesar. Starr expands on his career as a whole, and he...

This Ted Lasso Fan Theory Makes Me More Excited About Nate’s Story Ahead of Season 4
Image
The third season of Ted Lasso wrapped up with a lot of mixed feelings, healing, heart, and hopeful goodbyes. One character’s journey, though, still feels unfinished: Nate Shelley. Starting as Ted’s buddy, moving on to becoming a villain, Nate’s redemption has been messy and slow, just like actual life. A recent fan theory has brought hope to the minds of viewers that we could see Nate in season 4, in a better light.

The theory teases a full circle growth for Nate and explores the direction of the show after Ted’s departure. With rumors of a possible spinoff, the theory could be a fresh perspective on the narrative, which can maintain the emotional backbone of the show.

House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones director on the joys of killing characters
Image
Director Alan Taylor has a very particular speciality: killing characters on HBO shows. Whether it's Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos, Wild Bill Hickok on Deadwood, Julius Caesar on Rome, or Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, characters best beware when Taylor approaches set.

Last year, Taylor claimed another victim: Princess Rhaenys Targaryen of House of the Dragon, who fell to her death after battling her nephews in the sky astride her dragon in the best episode of the show's second season. "It is emotional because she'd been there as a big part of Season 1, and knew that her time was coming," Taylor told Gold Derby. "There's a sadness there that the actor is not going to be around anymore, because they become such a part of the intense family. For many actors, and I think it was true of her, there's a relief as well. She savored that she knew...

Why Thunderbolts*' Writer Doesn't Expect Us To See Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow Again
Image
As Marvel Studios nears the theatrical release of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," which will serve as the kickoff of the McU's Phase Six (thus closing the book on the franchise's dismal Phase Five), fans can't help but be laser focused on next year's "Avengers: Doomsday." It's not that the quartet's first official appearance in the MCU looks dire; it's just that Marvel, smarting from the franchise-hobbling failures of "The Marvels" and "Captain America: Brave New World," sweatily upstaged their summer 2025 slate last March with a bizarre PR stunt involving a ridiculous number of chairs.

This is not the Marvel Studios of the 2010s, where almost every single movie was a potential billion-dollar event. With the film business still struggling to recover from the Covid-19 stoppage and the (absolutely necessary) union strikes, studios need to go above and beyond to convince potential ticket buyers that their latest theatrical offering is...

Netflix’s Glossy Adaptation of the World’s Second-Biggest Comic Book Series Gains New Ground
Image
A little over a decade ago, director Steven Spielberg had difficulty explaining to American audiences that Raiders of the Lost Ark was inspired by the comic book series "The Adventures of Tintin," and not the other way around. Spielberg directed a feature film adaptation of the Tintin books in 2011, and while the movie made a decent amount of money worldwide, it struggled to find an audience domestically. The property was simply not a part of popular culture in the United States, at least not to the degree that it was in Europe. Now, another Franco-Belgian comic book icon is getting an opportunity to appeal to audiences across the globe. Netflix recently unveiled its five-episode adaptation of the Astérix comics, titled Astérix & Obélix: The Big Fight.

The show is gaining new ground on the streamer's viewership charts, particularly in Europe. According to FlixPatrol, Astérix & Obélix has accumulated over 3,100 points since its release last week,...

SNL Puts A Hilarious Spin On The Time Travel Of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Image
Traveling through time sounds like an excellent adventure ... until you remember that deodorant wasn't invented until the end of the 19th century and "splinter-free" toilet paper didn't enter the market until 1935. Between these and other historical inconveniences, time travel has the potential to be a pretty bogus journey.

On the flip side of that, our present time -- as miserable as it might sometimes feel to those of us who live here -- would probably look quite bodacious to time-travelers from the past. That's certainly the case for abolitionists Harriet Tubman (returning guest host Quinta Brunson) and Frederick Douglass (Kenan Thompson) in a sketch from this week's episode of "Saturday Night Live." After partaking in a radical experience with '80s teens Will (Marcello Hernández) and Todd (Andrew Dismukes), Harriet and Frederick politely decline the offer of a return ride to the "1-800s."

Check out the sketch above, co-starring Emil Wakim as Julius Caesar,...

‘SNL’ Spoofs ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’: Harriet Tubman And Frederick Douglass Refuse To Return To The Past
Image
Saturday Night Live opened strong with a hilarious sketch spoofing Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, the 1989 film starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as time-traveling teens to meet historical figures to help them ace an exam.

In Will & Todd’s Radical Experience, Marcel Hernandez and Andrew Dismukes bring to life the titular duo on a similar mission to Bill & Ted, who return to present day with Julius Caesar (Emil Wakim), Queen Elizabeth (Chloe Fineman), Leonardo da Vinci (Mikey Day), Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass (Kenan Thompson).

Only when it was time for the group to return to their respective times did Tubman and Douglass declare their intentions; they planned to stay put in the present. Will and Todd nervously explained to the pair that history would suffer if they refused.

“Without the two of you, who would end slavery?” asked Todd.

“Lots of people are working on that,...

Asterix & Obelix Back in the Fray in Netflix Animated Series ‘Asterix & Obelix: The Big Fight’
Image
For over six decades, the names Asterix and Obelix have conjured images of indomitable spirit, potent magic potions, and resounding slaps delivered to hapless Roman legionaries. Since their debut in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in 1959, the diminutive, cunning warrior Asterix and his eternally strong, menhir-delivering friend Obelix have stood as icons of French popular culture. Created by the legendary duo of writer René Goscinny and artist Albert Uderzo, their adventures resisting Julius Caesar’s legions in 50 BC have captivated generations, selling over 385 million books worldwide in 111 languages and dialects. The saga of the small Gaulish village holding out against Roman occupation has spawned a multimedia empire, encompassing numerous animated and live-action films, video games, merchandise, and even a beloved theme park, Parc Astérix.

This one underrated comic movie proves Karl Urban is a Sci Fi & Fantasy icon

Denzel Washington Wants to Turn His Latest Shakespearean Show Into a Feature Film
Image
Denzel Washington's latest venture in the world of Shakespeare could become a feature film adaptation if the Oscar-winning actor's hopes are realized. The Washington-led Broadway production, Othello, may get the big-screen treatment, with its director revealing talks about a potential movie are underway.

Speaking during Othello's red carpet premiere with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kenny Leon shared that he and Washington are "absolutely" discussing the potential of a film adaptation. Though Leon admits he isn't sure how the play would translate to the big screen, he believes the adaptation must convey the same truth the Broadway version does to stay connected to the real story.

"[It's] two different art forms... [But the story's still] got to tell the same truth... We’re trying to get this up first... It's important for today because, for hundreds of years, we're still dealing with ourselves. Humanity is still struggling with itself. This play is about...

‘Othello’ Director Kenny Leon and Denzel Washington Are “Absolutely” Discussing a Potential Film Adaptation
Image
Othello may have just hit Broadway, but the future of seeing it on the silver screen — with Denzel Washington — looks promising, too.

The highly anticipated show starring Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal celebrated its official opening on Sunday. Last year, Washington told Australia’s Today about a number of projects he had coming up. Broadway’s Othello was one of them, but so was the film version.

The play’s director, Kenny Leon, told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet at the Othello opening that there have “absolutely” already been talks about adapting the play into a film. Leon, who’s now worked with Washington on three projects (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences), added that he hopes Gyllenhaal could also return. “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen,” he said.

Leon went on to say he doesn’t know what Othello would look as a film,...

Daredevil: Born Again Episode 4 review: "Sic Semper Systema"
Image
Daredevil: Born Again’s showrunners are clearly going for a grimdark vibe in their version of New York City, but they’ve chosen to balance such a choice with some of the strangest scenes I’ve ever witnessed in a piece of Marvel media. The juxtaposition of such darkness with such weirdness gives me glimpses of the Tim Burton-directed Batman flicks from the '90s, which I love. But these moments are so off-brand for Marvel, so fleeting, and so discordant that I’m still not fully sure how I feel about them as a whole. A big takeaway after watching Born Again’s fourth episode, though, is that this kind of strangeness isn’t going away. In fact, from this reviewer’s perspective, it appears that as things get darker and darker, they’re also only going to get weirder. This is both promising and frightening to me.

'Game of Thrones' Fans Need To Watch HBO's 'Rome'
Image
As Game of Thrones fanatics eagerly anticipate Season 3 of House of the Dragon, not to mention the countless other spin-offs in the works, one HBO original series is the perfect placeholder. In 2005, the premium cable channel unveiledRome, a wildly ambitious and highly expensive historical epic boasting all the large-scale cinematic bells and whistles Game of Thrones has been praised for.

Winner of seven Primetime Emmy Awards, Rome is ranked #90 on IMDb's Top 250 TV Shows and holds a 96% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. Perhaps more timely and topical than ever, the lofty big-budget TV event portrays the final days of the Roman Republic as it is overtaken and turned into the Roman Empire, shifting perspectives from those fighting on the street and those making decisions in their ivory towers. In plainer terms, Rome walked so Game of Thrones could run.

The 25 Best TV Shows on Jio Hotstar
Ken Leung, Kit Harington, and Harry Lawtey in Industry (2020)
Monopolies, mergers, and content shuffling through various streaming services are frustrating endeavors. They utterly break the illusion of accessibility towards films and media that the lure of Ott had invited when Netflix would disrupt the space, and the rest of the studios would follow suit with their own corresponding Ott service.

If one views the acquisition of Hotstar by tech giant Jio, leading to the dissolution of their streaming service Jiocinema, and the merging of Hotstar to form JioHotstar, it is essentially to swallow the media library of Disney+Hotstar. As a result, JioHotstar currently has the Disney Library, which includes Marvel and Star Wars, as well as re-integrates live sports broadcasting. More importantly, JioHotstar is now again the home of the HBO series and the sole distributor of Peacock and Paramount + content.

If one were to logically extrapolate and make a list of the best TV shows in Jio Hotstar,...

Dune: Messiah comes to theaters in 2026, with an amazing plot
Image
One book, two movies, and the third installment from parts of the second book of Frank Herbert's interstellar opus are on the way. Fortunately, for the fans who have poured $1.122B into Warner Bros.' and Legendary's coffers, Denis Villeneuve thinks we haven't seen anything yet.

Critical acclaim. Fandom frenzy. Box-office dominance. An impressive array of award nominations sprinkled with some major wins. In an exclusive report with Deadline last October, Villeneuve has "announced" it is time for his "deep" navigation of Herbert's second of six books, Dune: Messiah. This will be the focus of Denis Villeneuve's last of "his" trilogy.

The crux of Dune: Messiah is a conspiracy from within. That's all we're saying here. Needless to say, 2026 can't get here fast enough. As for production time, Villeneuve told Deadline that he's "[going] back behind the camera faster than I think." When he finally gets there, what can we expect?...

15 Best TV Shows Like Shogun
Image
For a brief, shining moment in the late 2000s and early 2010s, we were living in a golden age for prestige television. But in recent years, the bloom has definitely gone a bit off the rose, as streamers competing with each other become more risk-averse and heavily dependent on cheap, reliable standards. There are still great shows out there, of course, but there are fewer of the magnitude that cause a massive segment of viewers across all demographics to sit up and take notice. One of these recent series was "Shogun," a massive hit for Hulu that won over audiences and cleaned up at the Emmy Awards, taking home an astonishing 18 trophies for its first season. In a world where shows are being cancelled left and right, "Shogun" has already been renewed for both a second and third season.

Taking place in 1600, it revolves around English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis...

The 40 Best TV Shows Of The 2000s, Ranked
Image
For many, TV has the power to etch lasting memories and define entire chapters of one's life. From drama and comedy to sci-fi and animation, devoted fans have flocked to various review sites. Although places like IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are certainly helpful in curating a selection of outstanding TV shows from the 2000s, they are not explicitly necessary to guide viewers to these remarkable gems.

Whether these shows have achieved their high-ranking statuses due to their captivating plot lines, top-tier animation, or brilliant writing, there is a reason they are considered the best among hundreds of TV series from the first decade of the century. Regardless if viewers prefer uplifting classic 2000s comfort cartoons, thrilling dramas, or beautifully filmed and deeply informative nature docuseries — there is a 2000s show for every audience, catering to a diverse range of tastes and interests.

Fans of Gladiator Should Watch This Stanley Kubrick Classic
Image
The release of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator in 2000 saw audiences flocking to theaters to witness the might and spectacle of hand-to-hand combat in the Colosseum of Ancient Rome. Amidst the pageantry and savagery of Gladiator was the political intrigue that took place in the corridors of power and the struggle of its main protagonist against insurmountable odds, as he not only fights on the floor of the Colosseum but wages a crusade against the ruling powers of the Roman Empire. While entertaining, Scott’s big-budget Hollywood epic can trace much of its premise to Spartacus.

Released in 1960 and directed by Stanley Kubrick, Spartacus was one of many large-scale period pieces prominent in Hollywood at the time. Featuring an all-star cast that included Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, and Tony Curtis, the film is based on the real-life slave revolt that shook Rome to its foundations in the waning days of the republic.

'Flight Risk' Pushes Mark Wahlberg Past Denzel Washington at the Worldwide Box Office
Image
While Mark Wahlberg's Flight Risk may not rank highly with audiences, it did earn him a new ranking elsewhere. The action thriller premiered in theaters last weekend and overtook Mufasa: The Lion King at the box office, grossing over $13 million. This latest role helped Wahlberg overtake another Hollywood legend, Denzel Washington, on a list of the highest-grossing stars of all time, per The Numbers. While both actors sit at $2.7 billion earned at the domestic box office, Wahlberg now holds the #40 spot.

Flight Risk follows the story of a U.S. Marshall transferring a witness to New York on a small plane across the Alaskan wilderness. However, tensions rise as he realizes the other passengers are not who they pretend to be. Michelle Dockery, Topher Grace, Leah Remini, Monib Abhat, and Paul Ben-Viktor round out the cast with Mel Gibson directing.

The film currently sits at a shocking 26% critics score...

The Monster Movie Thrills of ‘Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit’
Image
Every horror fan has to start somewhere. And while some of us were immediately immersed in scary media from a young age, others were eased into this world of killers and monsters by family-friendly retellings and even cameos. My point is: gateway horror comes in all shapes and sizes, and even as a hardened genre veteran who eats extreme films like August Underground for breakfast, I still believe it can be rewarding to look back on the G-rated frights of yesteryear.

And with the release of Aardman’s long-awaited Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, I think this is the perfect moment to look back on the on the unexpected thrills of studio’s surprisingly horror-adjacent work in Wallace & Gromit: The Case of the Were-Rabbit – a film that borrows heavily from some of the all-time best monster movies.

Like most Aardman projects, production on Curse of the Were-Rabbit was a slow and expensive ordeal,...

Take Notes, Eiichiro Oda: ‘Castlevania’ Had the Most Fashionably Vicious Line of Villains and None of Them Failed Like Kaido
Image
Villains are the lifeblood of any great story. Not just anime, even Shakespeare wrote plays around villains, Macbeth and Julius Caesar for instance. But as time passed, the impact of the hero defeating the villains was seen as an opportunity to gain more following and popularity.

Castlevania’s imposing and majestic villain Carmilla | Credits: Netflix

This led to the growing number of antagonists in stories with barely half a brain and nothing but brute force and evident evil intentions, thus justifying their being pummeled by the main character.

True villains are showcased in Netflix’s Castlevania, and they’re not just a part of the narrative; they define it. Be it Carmilla, Isaac, Olrox, or Drolta – none of them are your standard run-of-the-mill antagonists.

Castlevania’s villains are a perfect fusion of style and substance.

Castlevania’s antagonists could as easily be the focus characters. They carry a charm that...

'Return to the Arena': Spartacus Revival Series Gets First Look Trailer (With 1 Returning Star)
Image
More than 10 years after the last installment of Spartacus aired, House of Ashur marks the return of Starz’ hit series. The teaser promises the same degree of stylized action, drama, and character complexity that previous iterations of the franchise have boasted.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be centered around Ashur, played by Nick Tarabay. Those with a keen memory may remember that in the 2012 series finale of Spartacus: Vengeance, Tarabay’s character died, but Starz explains his return as follows: "The series poses the question: what if Ashur, hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance? And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus in return for aiding the Romans in killing Spartacus and putting an end to the slave rebellion?"

What Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' might tell us about Jod's downfall
Image
There are a lot of influences that Skeleton Crew could cite as inspiration, from The Goonies to Peter Pan. With the inclusion of a turncoat who had been something of a friend, it's recently looked a lot like Treasure Island. One character dynamic points to a different source, and that is the rivalry between Jod Na Nawood and Captain Brutus.

Who is Brutus in Skeleton Crew named after?

A mutiny is a common trope in pirate stories and it's been entertaining to watch how Jod shifts from quasi-Jedi to conniving swashbuckler throughout the series so far. He even uses a sea shanty to inspire the crew to carry out another kind of mutiny against their new captain, Brutus. In episode 7, "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble," he kills Brutus in cold blood and then calls him "back-stabbing." I had just moments before realized that a traitor could have been named for Marcus Brutus,...

Silo: What's A Caesar Shift Cipher?
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo season 2's episode 6.

Silo season 2 makes the Caeser shift cipher a crucial part of one of its main story beats, raising many questions surrounding what it means and how Lukas uses it. Although a lot has been happening in Silo season 2, some of its story developments are far more intriguing than the others. For instance, even though Juliette's efforts to return home are engaging to watch, the political conflicts inside Silo 18 are arguably more compelling than Juliette's journey.

Another interesting plot point that has emerged midway through Silo season 2's runtime revolves around Salvador Quinn, Silo 18's former Head of It. Bernard gains access to Salvador Quinn's final cryptic letter in Silo season 2's episode 5, which, according to Meadows, reveals some harsh truths about the world they live in. Although Bernard has not been able to crack the code, Lukas implements some intriguing techniques,...

Gal Gadot's Long-Gestating Cleopatra Movie Gets an Exciting Update
Image
Recent reports reveal that Gal Gadot, starring as the Evil Queen in Disney's highly anticipated live-action Snow White, may soon be headlining the long-delayed epic Cleopatra.

According to Production Bulletin, Cleopatra is currently in active development, with Universal Pictures and Atlas Entertainment attached to the likely big-budget epic period film. The report also suggests that the production team has narrowed down an exciting new location for the film, with Morocco listed as the filming destination. Morocco notably served as a filming location for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott's recent big-budget blockbuster. In Gladiator II, the opening scenes set in "Africa Nova" were filmed around the city of Ouarzazate, south of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Morroco has also been used in other incredibly popular productions, including Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

Gladiator II Is A Musical Now, Thanks To Some Hasty SNL Reshoots
Image
"Gladiator II" is not a musical, unless you count a couple of ominous poetry recitals from Paul Mescal and Joseph Quinn. But "Saturday Night Live" saw the lack of ballads and rap battles as a missed opportunity, and Mescal stopping by 30 Rockefeller Plaza for guest host duties this week was a perfect opportunity for some reshoots.

The "SNL" trailer for "Gladiator II" aims to capitalize on the box office success of "Moana 2" and "Wicked" by adding 50 minutes of singing, including the central showstopper, "There's No Place Like Rome." Mescal himself fully commits to the bit ... in fact, he seems more enthused about this musical version of "Gladiator II" than he did in the actual movie. Perhaps all along he was secretly longing to break into song.

The sketch is also, arguably, even more historically accurate than Ridley Scott's spectacle-filled epic. There's no evidence that the Romans captured sharks...

On February 24, 2022, forces from the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine. For many who had been watching events from afar, the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to be a matter of history repeating itself. Many of Putin’s tactics were eerily reminiscent of Adolf Hitler, from the utilization of domestic terrorism as a reason to launch a preemptive strike and the widespread use of state-sponsored propaganda to cloak the actions as justified. All too often, events that occur half a world away seem distant and unrelatable, especially with so many modern distractions that occupy our time. The war in Ukraine, covered by several different press outlets, was occurring at the same time as many were finally getting used to the return of normalcy following a worldwide pandemic.

Here Are The Soap Opera Thanskgiving Traditions We Still Miss
Image
Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, food, and favorite traditions. While The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless continue to make new memories for their fans, we’re taking advantage of the holiday to look back on some of the celebrations past from soaps we’ve lost over the years.

Cut It Out

For the last few decades of the show’s run, it wasn’t a Thanksgiving on As the World Turns unless the Snyder family was hunkering down to carve the old Hubbard squash. Enjoy this complete episode from 1994, and your glimpses of the Hughes, Stewart, Snyder, and Walsh families… along with a very young Jason Biggs, long before he got up close and person with an American Pie.

Children’s Table

The Martin family was there for the first episode of All My Children, and they were there for the last.
