Gravitas Ventures Buys Action-Comedy ‘Hustle Down’ – Cannes

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to Hustle Down, R. Ellis Frazier’s action-comedy, and will release theatrically in October.

The deal was struck with Ultramedia, which is handling international sales rights and screening the pic in Cannes.

The movie stars Tom Sizemore (Heat), Paul Sidhu (Repeater), Bai Ling (Crank: High Voltage), Kevin Gage (Heat), Raymond J. Barry (Training Day), Vanessa Angel (Weird Science), and Noel Gugliemi.

It follows Cully (Sizemore), a two-bit hustler and the driver for a Baja drug cartel, who finds himself relying on skilled-but-reluctant bounty hunter, to stay out of the grasps of a merciless assassin, and vicious thugs led by a rival gang leader after he steals a money car stuffed with cash meant for his boss.

Robert Beaumont produced, Benjamin Budd wrote the screenplay.

Mpi Media Group acquires 'Emelie'
The distributor has acquired Us rights to concert filmmaker Michael Thelin’s psychological thriller.

Mpi Media Group will distribute the Tribeca world premiere via its Dark Sky Films elevated genre label in early spring 2016.

Emelie is part of the Scary Movies festival presented by the Film Society Of Lincoln Center and centres on a twisted babysitter. Raymond Harry Herbeck wrote the screenplay.

Sarah Bolger, Chris Beetem, Susan Pourfar, Joshua Rush, Carly Adams and Thomas Bair star.

Screen Media Films has closed a deal for North American distribution rights to Ride, the film Helen Hunt wrote, directed and produced, and stars in alongside Brenton Thwaites, Luke Wilson, and David Zayas. Pic is Hunt’s follow-up to her helming debut Then She Found Me. In this comedy, she plays an editor from The New Yorker who follows her son (Thwaites) to La after he drops out of college to surf and find himself, but she ends up being the one thrust into a sea change of self-discovery. She befriends a limo driver (Zayas) and soon rediscovers her sexuality with a younger surf instructor (Wilson) and begins to heal her fractured relationship with her son and herself. Lightning promotes Will Weissman
Santa Monica-based sales, production and distribution company Lightning Entertainment has bolstered the international sales and distribution ranks and promoted Will Weissman to director of marketing and acquisitions.

Weissman will oversee international and North American marketing and North American VoD operations as well as acquisitions of features for the international sales and North American distribution slates.

He joined the company in 2009 following a career in the music industry and reports to Lightning president Robert Beaumont.

The executive oversees marketing for Lightning’s recent Cannes launches Cavemen, The Occupants and Gus.

The film, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival to rave reviews in March, marks the feature film debut of Jessie McCormack, who directed from her own script.

Revenge Thriller Scorned to Star AnnaLynne McCord and Billy Zane
"90210" and Excision star AnnaLynne McCord has signed on for the revenge thriller Scorned alongside Titanic star Billy Zane and Viva Bianca from Starz's "Spartacus."

Per The Wrap, McCord and Zane will play Sadie and Kevin, a couple whose romantic weekend at a lake house takes a sideways turn when a text message from Sadie's best friend (played by Bianca) to Kevin reveals a lurid love affair between the two, sending Sadie on a vengeance spree. The director is Mark Jones, the creator and director of the Leprechaun horror-movie series, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sadie Katz.

Andrew Traucki’s The Jungle picks up international sales

A Us-based sales production and distribution company has picked up the worldwide sales rights to the next film by Aussie writer/director Andrew Traucki.

Traucki’s film The Jungle has been picked up by Lightning Entertainment of Santa Monica.

The news sees the two parties reunite after Traucki’s 2010 shark film The Reef.

Lightning has already secured sales for the film in a number of regions including Australia’s Ifm/Filmways, France’s Wild Side, Metrodome in the UK, Acontracorrientes in Spain, Eagle Films in the Middle East and Ipa in Thailand.

Filming for The Jungle is due to begin in June in both Australia and Indonesia.

The Jungle is about an Australian leopard conservationist who ventures into Indonesia jungle with a documentary film-maker to investigate sightings of an endangered species of the big cat. However, they become aware that they are being stalked by a deadly, unseen predator.
