Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.

The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.

Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.

Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.

He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.

The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.

“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.

Smith was finishing work on his latest movie, the psychological thriller Wasatch, when he suffered a stroke. No further details were provided.

Born in Monterey, CA, raised in the Midwest and a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Smith began his entertainment career working for commercial and music video director Bob Giraldi. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a writing career.

Smith was a native of Monterey, Calif., and was raised in the Midwest. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Smith began his career in entertainment working for commercial and music video director Bob Giraldi. He spent four years learning production in New York before leaving Giraldi Productions to pursue his screenwriting career in Los Angeles.

When Smith first arrived in LA, he joined Panavision Hollywood, where he supplied cameras to Quentin Tarantino and Emmanuel Lubezki. In 2000, Fox made “Men of Honor,” starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. and directed by George Tillman Jr. Smith was the sole credited writer on the screenplay.

Jim Caviezel, Laura Dern, Michael Chiklis and Alexander Ludwig are all set to star in the football pic "When the Game Stands Tall" at Mandalay and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

Based on Neil Hayes' book, the story follows a visionary De La Salle High School football Coach Bob Ladouceur (Caviezel) and his assistant coach Terry Eidson (Chiklis).

The pair took the Concord, Calif., Spartans prep team from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak from 1992-2003 that shattered all records for consecutive victories in any American sport.

Dern will play Ladouceur’s wife, Ludwig will play the Spartans’ standout running back Chris Ryan.

Scott Marshall Smith adapted the screenplay, while Thomas Carter ("Coach Carter") directs and David Zelon ("Soul Surfer") produces. Shooting begins this week in New Orleans.

"Coach Carter" and "Save the Last Dance" helmer Thomas Carter is set to direct the $20 million true story tale "When the Game Stands Tall" at Mandalay says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is based on the inspirational true story of high school coach Bob Ladouceur, who led his perennial losing California football team, the De La Salle Spartans, to twelve consecutive undefeated seasons from 1992 to 2004 and a streak of 138 straight victories.

Scott Marshall Smith ("The Score") is adapting the screenplay, while Cathy Schulman and David Zelon are producing. Shooting aims to kick off in September with a cast of relative unknowns.
