Kelly O’Sullivan, Lois Smith Co-Starring in Indie Comedy ‘The Steel Harp’ (Exclusive)
Image
Kelly O’Sullivan and Lois Smith will co-star in “The Steel Harp.” The comedy is directed by O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson, the filmmakers behind “Ghostlight.”

In addition to starring in the film, O’Sullivan wrote the script. Cherry Jones and Reed Birney co-star in the movie, which recently wrapped production in San Francisco.

Smith plays Hanna, a cantankerous nonagenarian, who patrols the Golden Gate Bridge every day and intervenes when people get too close to the edge. On what was to be Hanna’s last day as a “bridge watcher,” she stops Amy (O’Sullivan), a younger woman as stubborn as Hanna herself, from jumping. As the holiday season sets in, Amy and Hanna challenge each others’ resolve and form a bond.

The Uninvited (2024) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analysed: Can Rose help Helen return home?
Image
Written and directed by Nadia Conners, The Uninvited (2024) is an aching, existential ode to aging and ambitions, set in our golden age of utter hopelessness. It conveys that nagging feeling that no matter how hard you scream for things to get better, whether for yourself or the world, they might never be enough. However, it conveys that feeling through the trivial affairs of its privileged L.A. people, who work only in the hours they get paid. It presents this saddening transactionality of present relationships that you often cannot argue against since nearly everyone has been worried about an impending cataclysmic shift in the world. How will you survive through it if you don’t get paid?

‘The Uninvited’ conveys this dread through the conversations of its mainly 40-something characters, who led superfluous lives, whether by choice or for the lack of it. The film is jam-packed with insights into...

The Uninvited

Nadia Conners' comedic drama, The Uninvited, revolves around Rose (Elizabeth Reaser), a former actress and stay-at-home mom, and her husband Sammy (Walton Goggins), a talent agent. The film opens amid preparations for the party they are hosting in their Hollywood Hills home, where the couple, who are getting ready upstairs, exchange humorous and snide quips. When the elderly Helen (Lois Smith) turns up on their doorstep claiming she lives there, Rose triples her duties. She tries to play hostess, find out who Helen is and return her home safely, while trying to get her son to stay put in bed. Meanwhile, the arrival of the guests, including Gerald (Rufus Sewell) and Lucien (Pedro Pascal), brings with them enough drama to fill the night.

The Uninvited
Image
‘Write what you know’ goes the old adage, and Hollywood scribes have long dipped their sharp quills into the inky working methods and attitudes of their own industry. And it’s not about to stop anytime soon — as Hollywood continues to navigate the seismic changes of #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, streaming platforms, the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike. And just as Seth Rogen’s Apple TV+ series The Studio gears up for its finale, we now have Nadia Conners’ heartfelt comedy-drama The Uninvited landing in cinemas to take its turn peering beyond the veneer.

Conners is married in real life to Walton Goggins, who thanks to the likes of The White Lotus has found himself the man-of-the-moment at 53. She therefore knows of what she speaks when offering this tale of once-celebrated theatre actress Rose (Elizabeth Reaser), now in her forties and unable to catch a gig. While she’s just...

The Uninvited (2024) Movie Review: A Mind-Numbing Industry Party Whose Invite Gets Lost in the Mail
Simon Godwin
Somewhere around the end of the first trimester of the year 2020, the entire world abruptly halted due to a pandemic. This sudden stop in our daily routines—professional, personal, or otherwise—offered a welcome respite, allowing us to take a moment to breathe deeply and reset, either to continue our regular lives or to change altogether. However, this worldwide catastrophe and the confinement it entailed also caused many struggles, both personal and interpersonal, as the interruption of every and all activity meant the termination of the human workforce who could no longer fulfill their responsibilities in the new home-office modality.

The arts also suffered because of this. Particularly those that require mass attendance, namely theater, film, and music concerts, causing production delays, postponing scheduled events, or simply resigning to seeing a project be totally scrapped regardless of how advanced it was in its making. British theater director Simon Godwin was...

“If I’m an Omega, She’s Definitely an Alpha”: Walton Goggins Dishes on Working With His Wife for New Comedy ‘The Uninvited’
Image
Walton Goggins has been an icon in Hollywood for the past two decades, but there is one thing he has never done -- work with his wife. Goggins is married to filmmaker Nadia Conners, and the two finally come together on a new venture. The Fallout actor spoke to GamesRadar+ about the experience of making the comedy The Uninvited. Not to be confused with the horror movie of the same name, the film was inspired by a real occurrence at the couple’s home and has since been remolded for artistic and entertainment value. This undertaking was a change of pace for Goggins, as he told the outlet.

"To collaborate with your spouse, I had never done that before. I sought some counsel from other friends that are are regular collaborators with their significant other. And both Nadia and I are Scorpios, separated really by two days. You know, she's November.

Director Nadia Conners on The Uninvited, life in Hollywood and being married to Walton Goggins
Nadia Conners
Directed by Nadia Conners and produced by Rosie Fellner, Carlos Cuscó and Ari Taboada, The Uninvited stars Elizabeth Reaser, Walton Goggins, Pedro Pascal, Lois Smith and Rufus Sewell.

This funny yet poignant story follows Rose (Reaser), a one-time actress who has transitioned to life as a stay-at-home mother. As she gets her house ready for a work party her husband (Goggins) is hosting, an older woman named Helen (Smith) shows up, insisting she’s come back to her house. This sudden arrival, along with other tricky people from both her past and present, turns the evening into a chaotic one. Through the night’s events, Rose is compelled to face her own self-doubts and think deeply about her experiences as a woman. The film playfully pokes fun at Hollywood’s obsession with beauty while also celebrating the multifaceted nature of being a woman. It delves into ideas around motherhood and...

The Uninvited review – Walton Goggins and Pedro Pascal shine in tasty satire
Nadia Conners
An agent hosts a fancy soiree in the Hollywood Hills in this gently incisive drama about the privileged class, written and directed by Nadia Conners

As the sun goes down in the Hollywood Hills, talent agent Sammy (Walton Goggins) and his actor wife Rose (Elizabeth Reaser) prepare for a house party they are throwing. It’s pretty quickly apparent that, despite Sammy’s sudden lustful lunges at his wife and her tinkling laughter, there is plenty of backstory to be revealed behind the landscaped garden succulents. Sammy’s career is in trouble and he is worried about retaining his star client, megalomaniac director Gerald (Rufus Sewell). Rose is not getting cast much these days, and while she dotes on their only child Wilder (Roland Rubio), she misses her career. Up-and-coming star Delia (Eva De Dominici) is coming by for the evening, as is big-time movie star Lucien (Pedro Pascal), who...

Image
Three faith-based films from two independent distributors hit the top ten, a pair of Indian pics popped and traditional indies flexed at a rapidly improving box office.

Angel Studios’ The King Of Kings is looking at a $19 million weekend on 3,200 screens, its widest opening yet and the highest grossing debut of a faith-based animated film. The story of Jesus told by Charles Dickens to his young son topped the previous record holder, The Prince of Egypt from DreamWorks Animation back in 1998, for a no. 2 domestic box office berth.

Fathom Entertainment’s The Chosen franchise has its two latest installments in the top ten. Just released The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5) Part 3 grossed $6 million on 2,296 screens at no. 6. And last weekend’s holdover The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5) Part 2 nabbed $932k on 622 screens for an $11.4 million cume, rounding out the top ten. It’s the second double dip in a row...

A Pedro Pascal and Walton Goggins Movie (That You Haven’t Heard of) Opens This Week With a 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The latest blockbuster on the block, A Minecraft Movie, will likely top the box office charts in its sophomore weekend after delivering record numbers in its debut frame. It'll compete against a handful of new releases, including the spy thriller The Amateur, the war movie Warfare, and the horror film Drop. But did you know that there is another film debuting theatrically this week; one starring perhaps the two hottest male actors right now? The Uninvited, a comedy-drama that premiered at the South By Southwest Festival last year, features Pedro Pascaland Walton Goggins as part of its ensemble cast. The movie will receive a limited release on Friday.

What also sets The Uninvited apart from its fellow newbies — barring the presence of Pascal and Goggins — is the excellent response that it is debuting to. It currently holds a "fresh" 100% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, albeit with just seven reviews currently listed.

‘The Uninvited’ Trailer: Pedro Pascal and Walton Goggins Are Part of a Party Run Afoul in L.A. Satire
Image
Writer/director Nadia Conners is shining a light on the dark side of being a woman in Los Angeles amid the Hollywood elite — and what better way to satirize your surroundings than by including them in a meta film?

Conners makes her narrative feature debut with buzzy film “The Uninvited,” which premiered at SXSW 2024. “The White Lotus” Season 3 star Walton Goggins, who is married to Conners in real life, leads the film alongside Elisabeth Reaser, who plays Conners’ semi surrogate. The onscreen couple host a dinner party for their actor pals, only to have the evening interrupted by a past lover (played by none other than Pedro Pascal), a former client, and a confused elderly woman who incites a group existential crisis. To note, both Goggins and Pascal are lead stars of HBO series: Goggins appears in “The White Lotus” and Pascal will return for “The Last of Us,” which...

The Uninvited addresses the sobering truths of aging with incisive comedy and sharp social commentary. Writer/director Nadia Conners gets top marks for putting the audience in the shoes of a lovely and caring protagonist who's constantly told she's past her prime. A drumbeat of rejection and criticism leads to a truthful reckoning about how women are poorly treated. Misogynists be damned. The ladies in our lives are indispensable and deserve much more credit for everything they do.

Rose (Elizabeth Reaser) tries on different outfits before a mirror. She gets an unnerving call informing her that she's been denied an acting role because she looks too old for the part. Sammy (Walton Goggins), her agent husband, wonders why she isn't dressed. The guests...

Bill Paxton Once Pitched A Wild R-Rated Twister Sequel - Why Wasn't It Made?
Image
A Twister sequel could have come much sooner than Twisters in 2024 if it were up to Bill Paxton, but, sadly, the actor's idea for a second movie never actualized. The 1996 disaster film, directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, starred Paxton as Bill Harding, one of the two leads. Beside him in the Twister cast was Helen Hunt, who played Jo. The two characters were storm chasers (and estranged husband and wife) who came together in an attempt to deploy their tornado research device ("Dorothy") by placing it in a tornado's path.

Twister was the second highest-grossing movie of 1996, earning over $495 million against an $8892 million budget. Bill Paxton's disaster film also received Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, but lost to Independence Day (1996's highest-grossing movie) and The English Patient, respectively.

Twister was a certified hit following its premiere in May...

Almost There: Lois Smith in "Five Easy Pieces"
Image
by Cláudio Alves

No matter how respected or prolific a thespian may be, the glow of Oscar gold isn't guaranteed. Just ask Lois Smith, a titan of the contemporary American stage with nearly 150 screen credits to her name. The closest she ever came to the Academy's good graces was at the start of the 70s and the New Hollywood craze, when playing Jack Nicholson's pianist sister in Five Easy Pieces. Bob Rafelson's film is something of a classic for those interested in this era of American cinema, but its legend tends to circle around the leading man and, maybe, Karen Black. Still, Smith delivers a performance worth considering and, as the title of this post suggests, she was almost there…...

Joe Manganiello Says True Blood Cast Was 'Really, Really Overqualified'
Image
True Blood's Joe Manganiello believes the cast, due to its high caliber, was "really overqualified" to feature in the show. The actor played the werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the hit HBO vampire series.

Per Variety, Manganiello, in a recent episode of Podcrushed, reflected that although True Blood was an intelligent show that still had cultural resonance, the quality of actors it attracted was enviable given their talent, training, experience, and extensive rsums. "What's funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified," he said. "Well, I should say the material was deceptively tricky because it was kind of written in like Tennessee Williams. It was very operatic at times."

Joe Manganiello on Why the Cast of ‘True Blood’ Was “Really, Really Overqualified”
Image
Joe Manganiello is sharing why he thinks the cast of True Blood was way too “overqualified” to be starring in the hit drama fantasy series.

On a recent episode of Podcrushed, with hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, the actor, who played Alcide Herveaux, looked back at the “really wild, crazy, intelligent” show that “pushed the culture forward at the time,” as he described it. However, he noted that the series cast actors with extensive résumés.

“What’s funny about True Blood was, you know, we were all really, really overqualified,” Manganiello admitted. “Well, I should say the material was deceptively tricky because it was kind of written in like Tennessee Williams. It was very operatic at times.”

He continued, “But, you know, but it’s all theater kids. It’s like people with Tonys and Oscars and, you know, Mike McMillan and I were the Carnegie Mellon kids,...

Box Office: Glen Powell’s ‘Twisters’ Makes $10.7 Million in Previews
Image
“Twisters” is getting ready to shake up the summer box office.

The disaster movie, a sequel to the 1996 classic “Twister,” has made $10.7 million in Thursday previews at the box office. The Universal film, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers, is expected to open between $50 million and $55 million this weekend.

“Twisters” comes with a $155 million price tag, so it’ll need to storm the global box office to turn a profit. Warner Bros. is distributing the film internationally, where it’s made $X million so far. It will open in larger markets like France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom this weekend.

Released 28 years after the original film, “Twisters” stars Powell as Tyler Owens, a popular storm chaser on the internet, and Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a meteorologist and ex-tornado chaser who is haunted by a major storm from her past. With her colleague Javi (Ramos...

The 10 Best Blockbuster Performances By Character Actors, Ranked
Image
This week marks the arrival of "Twisters" (read /Film's review), a sequel arriving nearly three decades after the original blockbuster hit "Twister." Because of how much time has elapsed between films, the cast for "Twisters" is entirely different. Although "Twisters," like its predecessor, boasts plenty of flashy special effects to create the sensation of powerful tornadoes popping up throughout Oklahoma as it tracks different groups of storm chasers trying to wrangle these bouts of Mother Nature's anger, the film doesn't quite live up to the secret weapon that "Twister" had: surprisingly committed character actors delivering better-than-needed supporting performances. But character actors popping up to steal the show in big-budget blockbusters isn't unique to "Twister" or its sequel, so let's rank the 10 best blockbuster performances by character actors.

Where To Watch ‘Twister’: Is the Original Tornado Movie Streaming?
Image
Before Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, there were Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who starred in the original high-octane thriller Twister (1996) as storm chasers.

Romantic tension similar, but also different, to that between the main characters in Twisters unfolded in the original film. The new installment also nods to the reboot in several ways. The conflict within the two films is also similar. Twisters looks to touch down to a $50 million start at the box office opening weekend.

With Universal’s sequel directed by Lee Isaac Chung about to hit theaters, some may be wondering where to watch the original natural disaster film.

Where Can I Watch ‘Twister’? Is It Streaming?

Twister, which came out in 1996, is available to stream on Max as well as with the Hulu and Max bundle. It is also available to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV+ and more.

Twisters Review: '90s Blockbusters Aren't Dead Yet In This Heartfelt Spielbergian Sequel
Image
If you were forced to pick a '90s blockbuster that lent itself to the legacy-sequel craze, the original "Twister" would probably be near the bottom of the list, and "Minari" director Lee Isaac Chung would be the very last name you'd pick to bring such a follow-up to life. Boy, what a difference nearly 30 years makes. Back then, there was practically a cottage industry built around productions featuring an A-list headliner surrounded by a strong stable of character actors, a journeyman filmmaker bringing a sturdy sense of direction, and a straightforward enough hook to put butts in seats. A movie like that merely needed a savvy marketing push and the promise of big-screen spectacle to set it on the right track ... and thrill-seeking audiences could be relied upon to take care of the rest and lead it to box-office glory, thank you very much.

Those halcyon days might be...

Twister, a 1996 disaster film, follows two storm chasers tracking violent tornadoes; it became a cult classic. Twisters, the upcoming sequel, releases on July 19, featuring a new cast and bigger, more threatening tornadoes. The classic film's iconic cast includes Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Lois Smith.

The 1996 disaster film Twister featured an iconic leading cast. The action movie follows the story of two almost-divorced storm chasers who are attempting to track down extremely violent tornadoes. Though it has a somewhat goofy and over-the-top premise, Twister has remained one of the 90s classic action movies to this day.

Twister became such a cult classic that it inspired the upcoming sequel film Twisters. Set for release on July 19, Twisters ups the stakes of the original Twister film by adding tornadoes that are bigger and more threatening than ever. Glen Powells Twisters Swirling Up a Storm With Strong Opening Weekend Projections
Image
Twisters is predicted to make somewhere in the neighborhood of $45 million to $50 million during its opening weekend domestically. Boxoffice Pros long-range tracking, which calculates approximately a month ahead of the films release, actually forecasts Twisters to make much more, with a domestic take of $65 million to even $95 million. According to star Glen Powell, Twisters is definitely not a reboot [] There are no characters from the original movie back, so its not really a continuation.

While July certainly doesnt qualify as tornado season, Twisters is still coming. The long-awaited follow-up to the Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt-led Twister (1996) is storming its way toward its theatrical release next month. And the long-range numbers predict Glen Powells Twisters is swirling toward an opening-weekend total somewhere in the neighborhood of $45 million to $50 million (per Deadline). But the disaster flick could be headed toward an even bigger box office debut.

Twisters could whirl its way toward a $50M opening when it blows into cinemas in July
Image
When Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters opens in theaters on July 19, the reimagined version of Jan de Bont’s 1996 classic could make a $50 million debut. According to analysts, a summer heatwave is heading our way, which could bring audiences to air-conditioned theaters. Between beating the heat with a bucket of buttery popcorn and an overpriced fountain drink, walk-up business could also play a part in Twisters whipping up dollars on its first weekend at the box office.

For a while, analysts predicted a slow summer at cinemas. However, movies like Inside Out 2 ($800M) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($294M) have reinvigorated interest in returning to theaters, leading number crunchers to take another look at their box office crystal ball. While Twisters has a lot going for it, tornado warnings across parts of the United States could have people opposed to watching weather-related carnage on the silver screen. My prediction?...

Return To The Suck Zone With The New Twisters Trailer
Image
It's been 28 years since Jan De Bont's "Twister" ripped through theaters and whipped up a $496 million worldwide gross. In the meantime, it's become a weekend cable mainstay, where viewers can tune out its wafer-thin plot and simply enjoy the foul weather spectacle. It's far from a classic, but its visual prowess is undeniable, and its colorful cast of storm chasers led by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt seem to be having a ball. Any film that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Jami Gertz, Todd Field, and Lois Smith is bound to be fun on some level.

So why has it taken so long for Universal to make a sequel to the second-highest-grossing film (domestically) of 1996?

"Twisters" didn't exactly have a stormy development process, but it did go through a couple of iterations over the last four years. Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct in early 2020. When that fell through,...

Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order: Organized CrimeSeason 4 Episode 10 “Crossroads.”] The Organized Crime Control Bureau now has to mourn one of its own. Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) latest undercover operation on Organized Crime has him looking into an organization moving heroin tied to his brother Joe’s (Michael Trotter) drug use. And in order to maintain his cover, Stabler can’t react—as a montage of moments from the season plays—when he’s ordered to bury the body of none other than Detective Sam Bashir (Abubakr Ali) after he went missing connected to the case. He leans on the fact that he was a Marine (his tattoo) to let his anger out and question Angus (Stephen Lang) about it. Angus claims they had nothing to do with his death. Later, Mama Boone (Lois Smith) asks Angus, “We’re just doing Red Coat’s doing now?” He says it’s part of the arrangement he made ...
