A Seinfeld Guest Star Played A Part In Naming Curb Your Enthusiasm

Enthusiasts of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's hit sitcom "Seinfeld" would be able to tell you that the title character (Seinfeld) had many, many girlfriends over the course of the show's 180 episodes. Indeed, Jerry usually only dated his partners for plot purposes, allowing them to stick around for a single episode. The following week, Jerry would be dating someone new. A metric on the show's DVDs pointed out that Jerry dated a grand total of 72 women over the course of the series' nine years. That means he dated each woman for an average of 45-and-a-half days. Only five of the 72 women dated Jerry for more than one episode.

It's easy to see why Jerry never dated anyone for an extended period. Jerry and the other three leads of "Seinfeld" were meant to be shallow, petty, childish, and awful. They were neurotic and self-serving characters,...

The 15 Best Seinfeld Episodes Ranked
Image
With the show continuing to find new audiences in the streaming era and influence current sitcoms, it's safe to say "Seinfeld" is one of the greatest comedies of all time. Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the show ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998, depicting the misadventures of a fictionalized version of Seinfeld and his friends. Each episode was relatively self-contained, with Jerry and his friends running into various misanthropic antics involving dating, their careers, and living in New York City. For a show seemingly about nothing, the phrases, terms, and scenarios throughout "Seinfeld" have entered the modern lexicon as a testament to the show's legacy.

While many of the show's 180 episodes are enduring classics, there are a handful that are just a cut above the rest (with some stinkers mixed in occasionally). From giving each of its main ensemble perfectly inane storylines to thoroughly quotable scenes, these episodes...

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Actress You Forgot Played Jerry's Girlfriend On Seinfeld
Image
The fictional Jerry Seinfeld has never been particularly lucky in love. Sure, he dated plenty of women throughout the show's nine seasons, but he didn't exactly have long-lasting, meaningful relationships with any of them. His closest female relationship is with his ex-girlfriend and ever-present friend Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), which is kind of refreshingly open-minded for a guy like Jerry, but that means there just weren't very many long-term girlfriend guest roles on "Seinfeld." In fact, Seinfeld's longest onscreen romance lasted for just four episodes, and it was with Rachel (Melanie Smith), who made out with him during a screening of "Schindler's List" and absolutely horrified Seinfeld's nearby nemesis, Newman (Wayne Knight). While she's not the most memorable of Seinfeld's girlfriends because she's at least somewhat normal, Smith gives a good performance and manages to hold her own alongside some of TV's funniest comedians of the '90s.

Maybe it was...

I Was Jerry’s Longest-Running Girlfriend on ‘Seinfeld’
Image
While George had Susan and Elaine had Puddy, Jerry’s girlfriends on Seinfeld rarely lasted more than an episode. There was, however, one exception: Rachel, played by Melanie Smith, who appeared in four episodes of the show at the end of Season Five.

While you’d never call the relationship “serious,” Rachel was introduced in “The Raincoats,” a two-parter in which she infamously made out with Jerry during Schindler’s List, only to come back to catch George’s shrinkage in “The Hamptons” and amicably break up with Jerry in “The Opposite.” Moreover, Smith also returned for Curb Your Enthusiasm, where she played an ex of Larry’s who was a survivor of incest.

I recently caught up with Smith to talk about her memories from both Seinfeld and Curb as well as who she thinks would be the better date — Jerry or Larry.

When you got the part on Seinfeld,...

Steven Spielberg's Love For Seinfeld Inspired The Show's Most Inappropriate Joke
Image
The filming of "Schindler's List" was, to put it mildly, a difficult experience for Steven Spielberg. Principal photography took place in Poland in and around many of the concentration camps where Jewish captives were murdered en masse. The weight should be too much for any human being to bear, and it absolutely cut through Spielberg. As he said in Joseph McBride's "Steven Spielberg: A Biography": "I was hit in the face with my personal life. My upbringing. My Jewishness. The stories my grandparents told me about the Shoah. And Jewish life came pouring back into my heart. I cried all the time."

This was not fertile grounds for laughs, but to get through the making of such a soul-scarring motion picture, Spielberg needed some semblance of levity. And so, when he knocked off for the day, he would repair to his quarters in Poland and find lighthearted solace...

Why 3 Actresses Played Dukat’s Daughter In Star Trek: DS9
Image
Three actresses portrayed Tora Ziyal on DS9 due to evolving storylines and casting choices, including Cyia Batten, Tracy Middendorf, and Melanie Smith. Ziyal's tragic arc involved being ostracized by Cardassian society, falling for Garak, and ultimately being executed as a traitor by Legate Damar. Nana Visitor's desire for a Cardassian orphan storyline led to Tracy Middendorf being cast but Melanie Smith's maturity won her the role long-term.

There are various reasons why three actresses ended up playing Tora Ziyal, the daughter of Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Gul Dukat's half-Bajoran daughter was first introduced in DS9 season 4, episode 5, "Indiscretion", which saw Dukat and Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) team up to investigate the fate of a crashed Cardassian freighter. Over the course of the episode, it was revealed that Dukat joined Kira's mission to locate his daughter and kill her, as he knew that...

Star Trek: Why DS9's Gul Dukat And Garak Hate Each Other
Image
Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) hated Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Cardassian tailor, and former spy, Elim Garak (Andrew J Robinson) with a passion, and the feeling was mutual. Garak was exiled from Cardassia Prime and forced to live on Terok Nor. He remained on the station after it was passed into Federation hands and renamed Deep Space Nine, where he formed a close bond with Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and continued to be a thorn in the side of Terok Nor's former prefect, Gul Dukat.

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's early days, Gul Dukat and Elim Garak had a strong dislike of each other, for reasons that weren't made immediately clear. It appeared to stem from the conflict between the Cardassian military and the secretive intelligence agency the Obsidian Order, of which Garak was a member. However, it wasn't until Star Trek: DS9 season 4 that the...

DS9's 7 Best Love Stories & Romances Ranked
Image
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was largely a show about the horrors of war and religious persecution, but it did manage to carve out a space for some of the franchise's most enduring romantic relationships. DS9 was set on the titular space station, now under Starfleet control after it was abandoned by the villainous Cardassians after their occupation of the peaceful planet Bajor ended. Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) takes command of the station after enduring personal trauma and doubts about his career in Starfleet, hoping to encourage the growth of a healthy post-war community on the station.

While the episodic nature of previous series like Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation made portraying enduring romantic relationships tricky, DS9 was a darker, more serialized story, allowing relationships to grow and evolve over time in ways that were, at that point, unique to the franchise. Fans...

How Many Women Jerry Dated On Seinfeld (Were Any Longer Than 1 Episode?)
Image
Jerry’s dating life is one of the greatest running gags on Seinfeld, with his indecisiveness leading to a significant amount of relationships. Outside of Elaine, who Jerry primarily dated before Seinfeld began, the sitcom doesn’t give the title character any long-term relationships. Instead, most of Jerry’s girlfriends are only confined to one-episode arcs, with a select few dating him for at least two installments. From Courteney Cox as Meryl to Jennifer Coolidge as Jodi, the long list of Jerry’s girlfriends on Seinfeld also includes pre-fame roles for many notable actresses.

The DVD extras for Seinfeld season 9 confirm that Jerry dated 73 women across nine years of his life. As it doesn’t seem that all 73 were depicted on-screen, the total includes those who are either seen or alluded to throughout Seinfeld’s nine seasons. With 180 episodes of Seinfeld, Jerry has a new girlfriend in nearly half of the series’ installments.

James Bond Star George Lazenby Apologizes for Homophobic Remarks From Australian Interview
George Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
George Lazenby, the one-time James Bond known for “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” apologized Monday for remarks made on a stage in Perth, Australia, that were deemed “creepy” and “homophobic.”

The Australian actor, 83, spoke Saturday in an interview as part of a national tour of classical music for The Music of James Bond, and Lazenby was later dismissed from the final leg of the national concert tour, which is scheduled for this coming Saturday in Melbourne.

“I am sorry and saddened to hear that my stories in Perth on Saturday might have offended some people. It was never my intention to make hurtful or homophobic comments and I am truly sorry if my stories that I have shared many times were taken that way,” Lazenby wrote in a tweet on Monday. “I only ever wish to share some stories and hopefully entertain some people. I personally have friends within my close circle who are gay,...

Church Usher Who Confronted Alleged Nashville Church Shooter Praised as ‘Hero’ for Preventing More Bloodshed
Authorities in Tennessee believe Sunday morning’s mass shooting inside a church that killed one and wounded seven would have been much deadlier if not for the bravery of an usher who brought the masked alleged gunman’s rampage to an end.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron told Wkrn that 22-year-old church usher Robert Engle confronted the suspect not long after he allegedly began firing indiscriminately on congregants at the Church of Christ Burnette Chapel in Antioch.

Engle was pistol-whipped by the suspect, Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, who actually shot himself during the struggle, the news station reports.

Tropical Storm Emily Joins Tempestuous Emily Club with Stewart, Quartermaine, Bishop, McLaughlin & O'Brien
Just like tropical storms and hurricanes, famous soap opera women named Emily tend to be unpredictable and even dangerous--and fun to follow!

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. The original name-lists featured only women's names, but in 1979, men's names were introduced. Of course, in the soap opera world, the best dramatic, tempestuous and unpredictable characters are almost always women.

In honor of Emily the Tropical Storm, here are our five favorite soap opera women named Emily (characters and actors).

1. Emily Stewart

Emily Stewart is a woman with many talents, including being a newspaper mogul and high class prostitute. Played (over the years) by Janine Sagan, Pat Reynolds, Jenny Harris, Marissa Morel, Colleen McDermott, Melanie Smith and Kelley Menighan Hensley, she churned up As The World Turns from April 1972 to September 2010, and made a brief appearance on The Young And The Restless in March 2007.
