The Last Starfighter reboot in the works with Rogue One scribe
Rogue One scribe Gary Whitta has taken to social media to share concept art for a reboot of Nick Castle’s 1984 sci-fi film The Last Starfighter, announcing he is working on the project with co-writer Jonathan Betuel.

Whitta stated on the post via twitter: “You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp for creating these images for us.” He was also asked if it was a reboot or a sequel to which he only responded: “Forgot to cc @Sethrogen since I know he’s a fan :)… Okay, back to work… might have a bit more for you later”

Also in the news – Scarlett Johansson in final talks to star in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit

Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel. You might recognize the ships.

Lance Guest in The Last Starfighter (1984)
'The Last Starfighter' Remake Eyed by 'Star Wars' Writer
Lance Guest in The Last Starfighter (1984)
Though not a substantial hit when it first arrived in theaters way back in 1984, The Last Starfighter, renowned for being one of the first movies to ever use CGI visual effects, has gained quite a cult audience over the years. A remake seems like a no brainer, especially with its timely story of a video game obsessed teenager who is called upon to save the universe. But that may not happen anytime soon according to writer Gary Whitta, who loves the idea of doing a reboot. Unfortunately, it seems the rights are currently tied up and almost impossible to obtain.

Remaking The Last Starfighter is Gary Whitta's dream project. And he's not alone. There are apparently many in the industry who would love to take on the project. About remaking The Last Starfighter, the former Star Wars Spin-Off writer states:

"Man, I wish. I'm one of a very long...

Celebrating The Last Starfighter’s 30th Anniversary with Co-Stars Lance Guest & Catherine Mary Stewart
On July 13, 1984, Nick Castle’s The Last Starfighter was released in theaters everywhere by Universal Studios. Written by Jonathan Betuel and starring newcomers Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart, as well as seasoned actors like Robert Preston and Dan O’Herlihy, The Last Starfighter was a landmark film of its time in regards to what it managed to accomplish with CGI graphics and quickly became my personal Star Wars once I discovered it in late 1985 on VHS.

For those who may have never experienced Castle’s underrated classic feel-good sci-fi tale, The Last Starfighter follows teenager Alex Rogan (Guest) who is recruited to be part of an alien defense force after he beats a video game. A trailer park kid who never expected his life to be anything but ordinary, Alex is suddenly tasked with saving the universe from the evil Emperor Xur (Norman Snow), who has wiped out all that oppose him,...

5 Best Star Wars That Aren’t Star Wars
Whilst you’re all revisiting George Lucas’ three classic films on shiny new Blu-ray, or re-reading Simon Gallagher’s utterly fantastic 52 Reasons Why Star Wars Is The Greatest Film of all Time I began to consider the very titular nature of the films themselves…

How much warring in the stars is there, really, in Star Wars? Not too much to be honest, sure there’s a lovely dogfight (no, not the Amores Perros kind) at the end of A New Hope, some land assault type stuff in Empire, another dogfight in Jedi and the much discussed ‘clone wars’ in the prequels, but, for the most part, the saga features more ‘intimate’ character based action than full on intergalatic warfare.

Which lead me to thinking about what other wars in the stars, or star wars, are there outside of the Star Wars universe, and which are the best star wars that...
