Nowadays, so many TV casts lose actors every few seasons, which means the relationship dynamics and strong character arcs suffer. Viewers don’t always have time to become invested in characters.
ABC’s Will Trent has differed because they’ve had the same cast and characters since the series began, and the cast works so well together that they often feel like a family on-screen and off-screen.
While other actors have joined the cast in recurring roles, the series thrived because the focus remained on the core five characters.

Over the past three seasons, we’ve come to care about Will, Angie, Faith, Ormewood, and Amanda. We’re invested in their journeys, and we’ll riot if anything happens to either Amanda or Ormewood.

In the last few decades, many critically acclaimed crime dramas delighted critics and the audience. However, a few of them are almost always in everyone's Top 10.

Since it premiered in January 2023, ABC’s Will Trent has been a fan favorite with its character arcs and intriguing cases.
However, many fans are divided because some details have deviated from Karin Slaughter’s best-selling series.
Adapting a long book series is challenging and will never be a direct adaptation. The executive producers, Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen, strived to include key twists but add their own signature.
(Zac Popik/Disney)
Let’s examine the key differences between the two and which version is superior.
Changing the Casting of the Characters
Many diehard fans complain that Will does not look like how he was described in the book, which was tall and blond, since Ramón Rodríguez is dark and Latino.
However, his version still features the essence of the character. He acts socially awkward, and connects to Will’s storylines, making viewers feel for his intense trauma with foster care and dyslexia.

The third season of Will Trent brought a lot of emotions to bear for its leading characters, especially Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen), who started out the season not even on speaking terms but ended in a place of both tenderness and complete romantic separation. So are they still endgame, or are they finally, fully finished on the romantic front? To recap, Season 3 began with Angie on administrative leave from the Atlanta Police Department after Will turned her in for covering for Crystal’s murder of Lenny, which opened the door for her to kill many, many other men. Meanwhile, Will disappeared off to Tennessee to get away from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and his heartbreak over ending things so terribly with Angie. Even after Will came back, at Amanda’s (Sonja Sohn) insistence, to deal with the Rafael Wexler (Antwayn Hopper) case, things were very...

We’re only a few weeks removed from the Will Trent Season 3 finale, and the show’s star is already pulling back the curtain on what to expect in Season 4. Will Trent was renewed for a fourth season roughly halfway through Season 3, and ABC confirmed not long ago that it plans to debut the next season before the end of the year. Starring in the lead role of Will Trent in the hit drama series is Ramón Rodriguez, known for his work in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Battle Los Angeles, and Need for Speed. Rodriguez directed the Season 3 premiere earlier this year, and during a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, he was asked if he has any plans to continue directing on the show.
"I will definitely be directing at least one episode next season. It makes the most sense for me to direct the premiere as I did this past season.

Will Trent star Ramón Rodriguez just dropped a huge update on the future of his hit ABC procedural series. Will Trent first debuted on ABC at the beginning of 2023, and the show has released new seasons each of the last two years. To no one’s surprise, it was performing exceedingly well during its third season, and ABC decided to move forward with Season 4 before the end of Season 3. The network is also expecting Will Trent Season 4 to air before the end of this year, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it stuck with an early 2026 release date, similar to previous seasons. Will Trent’s Rodriguez recently sat down for an interview with the LA Times, and he was asked what he could reveal about the fourth season:

The longstanding murmur in Hollywood has been that Christopher Nolan is a creative genius who doesn’t believe in mortal distractions like cellphones. Surprisingly, however, he is not disconnected from humanity!
As it happens, the Oscar-winning filmmaker does carry something similar to a cellphone (not exactly so), if and when need arises. Nevertheless, the British-born director admitted once that this lifestyle choice did not come impromptu, but rather he got inspired by one of Dominic West’s cult classics that premiered more than two decades ago.
The show the Oppenheimer director was referencing was, of course, the popular crime drama that caused a storm on television screens when it first premiered – The Wire.
Christopher Nolan admitted to using ‘dumb phones’ to maintain secrecy
As Christopher Nolan was busy doing the promotional tour for his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, the 54-year-old director stopped by the sets of Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Star Trek: Discovery's five-year mission came to an end on Paramount+ last year, and series star Sonequa Martin-Green hung up her combadge after her character, Michael Burnham, completed her five-season journey from convict to captain. Although she expected a longer ride, she felt the series' conclusion put a fitting end to Burnham's journey. The My Dead Friend Zoe star talked about her experience with the show's conclusion in a recent interview with ScreenRant.
Green initially expected the series to run longer than it actually did. Says Green, "...in the very beginning, it did seem like it was going to be a six-season situation because the contract with Pinewood Studios was for six years, and there were some other things. But we actually assumed that it would go for seven [seasons], so it was a bit of a shocker. TV has completely changed, though, and I always say that because it's a totally different landscape.

Ever since Will Trent began in 2023, it’s been a favorite since it balanced unique cases and character-rich arcs.
It’s improved each season, and Will Trent Season 3 took that to new heights as the cases had higher stakes and often involved the characters’ personal lives.
The series also injected more humor, so severe cases weren’t overly heavy. The result was a more balanced overall tone.

Will Trent co-showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen addressed the fate of two main characters following Season 3's emotional cliffhanger ending. After reuniting with his long-lost father, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Gbi) Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) was tasked with preventing a bioterrorism attack that endangered the lives of innocent civilians in Atlanta. However, Will was forced to choose between finding out what the terrorists are planning and saving Gbi Deputy Director Amanda Wagner's (Sonja Sohn) life after she was held hostage in the headquarters.
While Will Trent teamed up with his father, Sheriff Caleb Rousard, to unpack the terrorists' next steps, Wagner was left to fight the hostage takers alone. Meanwhile, Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) was inside the HQ when the hostage situation was happening, and she made a plan to save Amanda.

[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Will Trent Season 3’s finale, “Listening to a Heartbeat.”] Things got very, very hectic on multiple fronts on Tuesday’s (May 13) Season 3 finale for Will Trent. The episode picked up where the penultimate episode left off — with the hospital being overrun by sick patients after a bioterrorism attack — and among the many ill patients was Nico (Cora Lu Tran). Will (Ramón Rodríguez) raced to find the source of the outbreak — with the help of newfound father Caleb (Yul Vazquez), above work mom Amanda’s (Sonja Sohn) protective concerns — and he tracked it down to a container that’d been widely disseminated and used by people across the city. The good news? The CDC, which just so happens to be in the same city, had a supply of anti-toxins for this exact purpose. The bad news? It’d need to be transported through potentially hostile territory with some police muscle. Faith (...

Will Trent Season 3, Episode 17, finally confirmed the identity of Will's father in a shocking twist that came out of nowhere. The titular Atlanta-based agent (portrayed by Ramón Rodríguez) from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Gbi) has a complex family history in the ABC drama series, with Gbi Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) initially raising him before he was placed into a foster care system.
While the identity of Will's real parents remained a mystery throughout its three-season run, much of the character's family history focused on the fact that he had a traumatic childhood (primarily due to his foster mother's murder), combined with the fact that Will Trent already has dyslexia.
Will Trent's latest episode finally delved into the character's parentage after the big reveal that his long-lost father was still alive and working with him on the week's case.

ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.
The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.
ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.
Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut.

A delightfully heartwarming police procedural, ABC's Will Trent premiered in 2023 and was developed for TV by Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen, based on the novel series by Karin Slaughter. With a focus on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (Gbi) and the Atlanta Police Department (Apd), it quickly garnered fans and proved to be a step above similar shows on the air.
Not entirely episodic, Will Trent usually focuses on two separate cases at a time with the Gbi and Apd, though they sometimes overlap and spread across multiple episodes. Because the stories are often ongoing, viewers are that much more invested in the show, because when one puzzle is solved, there is always another waiting. Coupling that with the ever-changing personal lives of the cast, Will Trent has had audiences gripped from the very beginning. Unlike many other shows, though, it's only gained in popularity, with its third season averaging...
