Inside the ‘Garden State’ 20th Anniversary Concert: See the Shins and Iron & Wine Perform
Image
It sounded like 2004, back on the plane with Andrew Largeman.

The sun had already gone down over Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on Saturday night for the sold-out Garden State 20th Anniversary Concert, when the curtains opened and Zach Braff stood on stage underneath a spotlight as the Prayer to Ganesh played over the speaker.

The crowd applauded and Braff made his way over to a covered prop nearby and tore the sheet off to reveal the iconic green motorcycle his character rode in the early-Aughts cult classic – sidecar included.

“I...

Well, it’s happening!

“I’m so excited to announced the Garden State soundtrack 20th anniversary concert, benefitting The Midnight Mission, live, for one night only on March 29th, 2025, here at LA’s legendary Greek Theatre,...

Zach Braff Previews His ‘Garden State’ 20th Anniversary Concert and Reveals the One Artist He Couldn’t Get on the Soundtrack
Image
Zach Braff is getting the “Garden State” gang back together – at least the bands featured on the movie’s Grammy-winning soundtrack.

A one-night concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Garden State” – which Braff wrote, directed and starred in – will take place March 29, 2025, at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. On the bill are the Shins, Iron & Wine, Frou Frou, Colin Hay, Thievery Corporation, Remy Zero, Cary Brothers, Bonnie Somerville and Sophie Barker from Zero 7. Special guests will be announced at a later date.

The evening will benefit the Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter and support organization for unhoused individuals in downtown Los Angeles.

“When I was first approached about doing a concert for the 20th anniversary, I was like, ‘I don’t know how we’re ever going to get all these bands together at the same time,’” Braff tells me. “But when the notion of doing it as a benefit for the Midnight Mission,...

Zach Braff on His All-Star Benefit Concert for the 20th Anniversary of ‘Garden State’
Image
Twenty years ago, the music industry was wholly unprepared for the Garden State soundtrack and its “life-changing” songs by the Shins, Coldplay, and Iron and Wine. The 2004 movie, which actor Zach Braff wrote, directed, and starred in, was a coming-of-age cringe comedy about grief, following Braff’s character, Andrew Largeman, as he returns to New Jersey for his mother’s funeral and struggles to feel anything but numb. Then Natalie Portman’s quirky character, Sam, arrives to break him out of his funk.

In one scene, she places headphones on him and says,...

10 Best Directorial Debuts From An Actor That They Also Star In
Image
Actors often turn to directing and often star in their directorial debuts, knowing that their vision will not be questioned. While the performances are talked about, the director is the orchestrator of the film, blending all the moving pieces together. Bradley Cooper's directing debut in "A Star is Born" shows his ability to handle an emotionally taxing role while helping elicit Lady Gaga's performance.

It's no surprise that at a certain point in their careers, actors turn to directing, and they often play a starring role in their directorial debuts. They know themselves as an actor and know that their vision will not be questioned in either role, as they are in charge of so much of the film. While some actors feel that in their first feature, directing alone is difficult enough, many take on the challenge of directing and starring.

While the performances are often the...

“Like Clapping With One Hand”: Why Friends Abruptly Wrote Off Emily Explained By Director
Image
Emily's departure from Friends was due to her lack of chemistry and comedic compatibility with Ross, according to director James Burrows. The actor playing Emily, Helen Baxendale, was almost recast because she was "nice, but not particularly funny." Burrows' described David Schwimmer's scenes with Baxendale as "like clapping with one hand."

Emily's abrupt departure from Friends has been explained by famed TV director, James Burrows. The iconic long-running sitcom, which followed the romantic travails of a group of six friends living in New York City, featured an on-again-off-again relationship between the characters of Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). However, one roadblock to their getting together was Ross' relationship with and eventual marriage to Emily (Helen Baxendale), Rachel's boss' niece, though the couple quickly got divorced and Emily exited the series after Ross accidentally said Rachel's name during their wedding in the season 4 finale.

Per Deadline, Burrows wrote...

"Friends" Star Bonnie Somerville Ties the Knot: "It's Never Too Late"
Image
She'll be there for you. Bonnie Somerville, best known for playing Mona throughout the eighth season of "Friends," just tied the knot in the Santa Susana Mountains. On April 8, the actor married creative director Dave McClain - the person she says made her believe in true love. According to People, the ceremony took place at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in California, with Somerville's mom, Maureen, walking her down the aisle.

"I never believed in soulmates until I met Dave," Somerville told People. "I love everything about him." And evidently, so does Maureen. "She raised me alone so she's my best friend and both mom and dad to me," Somerville explained. "She loves Dave and they have an amazing bond."

As Mona, Somerville played one of Ross Geller's love interests who was trying to balance their relationship with the news of Rachel Green's pregnancy. Her character eventually broke things off...

Nash Bridges: Was Reunion Movie Worthy of a Full-On Series Revival?
Image
Don Johnson returned as Nash Bridges this Saturday night, with Cheech Marin’s Joe Dominguez again riding shotgun. Did the reunion movie for USA Network prove worthy of a full-on series revival?

The two-hour movie — which producers, at least at one point, hoped would serve as a backdoor pilot for a full series relaunch — picked up with Nash and Joe chasing after Trevor Garrison, a baddie involved in trafficking teenage girls. After a gunshot from Joe accidentally explodes a nearby gas truck (but in doing so Ko’s Trevor), both he and Nash nonetheless get a two-week suspension from the...

Heels Review: Stephen Amell's Starz Drama Is Friday Night Lights With Wrestling — and So, So Good
Image
At the height of my wrestling and boy band obsession, I wrote a crossover fan fic in which *Nsync’s Justin Timberlake dated a WWE wrestler who was best friends with the Hardy Boyz and Lita. It was not good.

On the other hand, Starz’s upcoming drama Heels (premiering Sunday, Aug. 15 at 9/8c; I’ve seen the first seven episodes) — created by fellow wrestling fan Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and executive-produced by Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse) — is very good.

Blue Bloods Season 10 Finale Recap: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Bonnie Somerville
As I suspected: You don’t guest-cast Bonnie Somerville for just any ol’ role.

The NYPD Blue alum returned to familiar territory by appearing in the (early) Season 10 finale of CBS’ Blue Bloods as Paula Hill, a woman who had a special favor to ask of Commissioner Frank Reagan — to get her son, a cop, transferred to a less dangerous assignment. And why would Frank consider this request?

10 Netflix Movies to Ring in Your New Year's Eve
Finding New Years Eve films on Netflix isn't as easy a task as you might think. The simple reason being is that there really aren't that many of them. I was quite surprised to realize this so, I had to revise my expectations a bit. Eventually, the list became more about movies that evoke the holiday/New Year's spirit which is how I eventually put together 10 films for your Netflix New Year's Eve.

As I stated, this list is more about how the holidays make us feel. It was important for me to try and capture that because this time of year means many things to many different people. This list does its best to represent the highs and the lows of the holiday season. This is a special time and one that needs to be documented and cherished because it only comes but once a year, right?

Code Black Update: CBS Officially Passes on Season 4
We’re calling it: The would-be Code Black revival is Doa. Although officially cancelled by CBS back in May, the medical drama — which continued to perform solidly in the ratings in the weeks following its axing — regained a (faint) pulse over the summer when CBS president Kelly Kahl indicated that he was reconsidering the decision.

“It’s doing incredibly well, it’s a well-done show. We’d like to figure out a way to maybe make it work,” Kahl told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We’re going to take a look.”

Watch Bradley Cooper as ‘Jack Bourdain’ in Fox’s Short-Lived ‘Kitchen Confidential’ Comedy (Video)
Bradley Cooper
Most viewers probably don’t remember this, but Bradley Cooper starred as a fictionalized version of the late Anthony Bourdain in a Fox sitcom based off his best-selling book “Kitchen Confidential.”

In the series of the same name, Cooper portrayed “Jack Bourdain,” an executive chef of an upscale restaurant called Nolita. The short-lived series ran for just one season on Fox during the 2005-06 TV season, averaging around 4 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Although 13 episodes were made, Fox only aired four of them.

The series premiered shortly after Cooper’s role in the 2005 comedy “Wedding Crashers.”

It also featured Nicholas Brendon, John Francis Daly, Jamie King, Bonnie Somerville, Owain Yeoman, John Cho and Frank Langella.

“A Star is Born” Trailer suggests an awards hopeful
Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for the rare remake that also has Academy Award aspirations. Most of the time, remakes are passable at best, and atrocious at worst. This one, however, could be different. The film in question is, in case you couldn’t guess, A Star is Born, which also marks the directorial debut of A-list actor Bradley Cooper. Teamed up with Lady Gaga, the pair seek to make this latest version of the story the most successful one yet. Warner Brothers is clearly optimistic about this one, considering the movie is a fall release. You’ll be able to see the Trailer at the end of the article, as always, but first…let us discuss! The film is the latest version of the classic story. Warner Brothers describes the plot as such: “Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Cooper) discovers-and falls in love with-struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about...

Code Black: Cancelled by CBS; No Season Four for Medical Drama Series
Angels Memorial is closing its doors. CBS has cancelled its Code Black TV show after three seasons. Creator and showrunner Michael Seitzman has already confirmed the Code Black cancellation. Although the production utilized the extraordinary measures of amputating some original series regulars (Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville) and grafting on a big name (Rob Lowe), the patient eventually succumbed to acute ratings anemia. A CBS medical drama, Code Black stars Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, and Lowe. The story unfolds at Angels Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles — home of the busiest, most notorious ER in the country. The high patient volume dwarfs the resources available to the exceptional staff — creating a condition known as Code Black. According to Seitzman...

Here Are the 3 Broadcast TV Shows We’re Still Awaiting Decisions On
Rob Lowe, Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, and Boris Kodjoe in Code Black (2015)
Updated May 24 at 7:31 a.m. Pt with “Code Black” canceled by CBS.

Is “Ghosted” coming back?

That’s a question on viewers’ minds as upfronts week comes to a close, with Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW all having announced their fall programming schedules as of Thursday. ‘Cause some of those slates have holes in them, meaning the statuses of almost half a dozen shows on broadcast television are still up in the air.

Look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC and The CW, who have already killed or renewed everything they’re going to — fans need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.

Rob Lowe, Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, and Boris Kodjoe in Code Black (2015)
When "Code Black" returns with its second season later this month, it will be minus doctors Christa Lorenson and Neal Hudson. Also missing? Any explanation of where they went.

“We went back and forth on this a lot,” executive producer Michael Seitzman tells TVLine when asked how the CBS medical drama will address the departures of Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey. “We toyed with a lot of different versions of addressing it. But none of them seemed to have any real weight.”

Every scenario felt like it was “generated in a writers’ room and not in the real world,” he continues.

Rob Lowe Joins Code Black Season 2 as Series Regular
Code Black wasn't an out of the gate hit.

His aggressive, rule-breaking style is greeted enthusiastically by Dr. Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden), but not by all the other doctors.

Code Black: Cancel or Renew for Season Two?
CBS hasn't had a successful medical drama in quite some time. How has Code Black been performing in the ratings? Will the network want it back for a second season or, will it be cancelled instead?

Code Black takes place in an Emergency Room in Los Angeles where underfunding and understaffing pile huge pressures on its staff. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Raza Jaffrey, Bonnie Somerville, Melanie Chandra, William Allen Young, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, and Luis Guzman.

The series debuted in late September 2015 to a 1.54 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.58 million viewers. That was an okay start for the 10pm drama though the CBS execs were surely hoping for better.
