"Rey Skywalker" was perhaps the single most controversial line in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Disney's Star Wars revival, following the studio's acquisition of Lucasfilm, was met with a lukewarm reception from theater-going audiences. There were certainly high points and not all criticism was justified, but most fans would agree that the sequel trilogy suffered from its lack of an overarching plan.
When Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker ended with Rey declaring herself a Skywalker, there was a predictable backlash. The scene prompted a range of complaints and while some audience members simply seemed reluctant to embrace a new protagonist in the Star Wars saga, others felt that Rey wasn't close enough to the Skywalker family to consider herself one of them, or felt a Palpatine shouldn't have taken the Skywalker name. Despite these complaints though, the sequel trilogy would likely have received a warmer response...

Despite Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s attempt at retconning Rey’s lineage, Rey “no one” was still far better than Rey Palpatine. When the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens sent the Internet into a frenzy back in November, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. In fact, given the sheer amount of hype that preceded it, it’s a modern day miracle that the footage wasn’t pigeonholed to the point of no return for not being the greatest thing in the history of things.
However, in balancing the old with the new, J.J. Abrams and the folks at Disney offered up an excellent taster for the new trilogy, topped off with a spectacular shot of the Millennium Falcon in all its glory. But perhaps the point that was raised the most in the days after its arrival was the whereabouts of the original cast, who were conspicuous by their absence.
