10 Films To Watch If You Love Parasite (2019)
Image
Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) created history at the 92nd Academy Awards, becoming the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture, along with its other three wins- Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film. It also became the first South Korean film to win the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival- the coveted Palme d’Or. If you have seen Parasite, you know there isn’t quite a film like the genre-defying, thrilling saga of two families, distinguished by class structures, coming together under the same roof. For those who haven’t seen it, still get prepared to be floored.

A succinct review would be the words of fellow Academy Award-winning director of films like Babel, Birdman, and The Revenant, Alejandro G. Inarritu, who has said how” […] Instead of preaching to us, pointing fingers or predictably, mass shooting oligarchs and corporate monarchs, Bong Joon Ho, sometimes using metaphors...

Born in Tehran in 1983, Farahani’s got her breakthrough role in Dariush Mehrjui’s “The Pear Tree” back in 1998. Since then, she has appeared in Abbas Kiarostami’s “Shirin,” Asghar Farhadi’s “About Elly,” Jim Jarmusch’s “Paterson,” Ridley Scott’s spy thriller “Body of Lies” or even in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, starring in “Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

In 2017, she came to Locarno to present the Rajasthan-set “The Song of Scorpions” on the Piazza Grande.

7 Other Movies of Lee Byung-Hun You Should Watch If You Miss Him After Squid Game 3 Twist Ending
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!Major Squid Game Season 3 Finale Spoilers Ahead!

Squid Game season 3 just ended, and boy, did it hurt. Though it did conclude the series as the final season with only six episodes, it perfectly proved to be the ‘sad ending‘ that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk warned fans about. Not only was it a twist ending for the leading actor Lee Jung-jae, but even for the Front Man portrayer Lee Byung-Hun, suggesting a profound shift in him.

Here’s a quick recap: In the emotional climax that didn’t see many survive, the final game pitted Gi‑hun (Jung-jae) and Myung‑gi (Yim Siwan) against Myung‑gi’s newborn baby. And, making it as heartbreaking as it could get, Gi‑hun sacrificed himself so the infant could win. This had even Front Man In-ho rattled by his selfless act as the baby came victorious.

Shortly after, In‑ho triggered the island’s self-destruct sequence,...

‘Parasite’ is 21st Century’s Best Movie, But Bong Joon Ho’s 95% Rated Movie Deserves the TV Adaptation More
Image
Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite became the best movie of the 21st century according to audience members, and it is indeed an incredible feat for a Korean movie on the international platform.

Directed and co-written by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite was released in 2019 to critical acclaim and worldwide fame, and even won 4 Oscars for its incredible storyline, iconic performance from the cast, and for depicting the themes of poverty in Korea that felt more like a dystopian wasteland for the poor.

Why Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is considered the best movie of 21st century

It was the year 2019 when Bong Joon Ho released Parasite. A film that followed a poor student who slowly paved the way for his family to work at a rich household in Korea, Parasite was more than just a movie; it was a dig at the income disparity in South Korea.

A still from Bong...

Clint Eastwood Inspired This 17 Year Old Korean Movie Based on His Greatest Film Starring Squid Game Actor
Image
Clint Eastwood is a renowned actor and filmmaker, known for his prolific and efficient working style. He has won two Oscars for his directing work, but the legend started as an actor and became a Western icon. One of his most popular Westerns is the third movie in his Dollars trilogy, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Eastwood’s character as the Man with No Name became extremely popular, and so did Sergio Leone’s morally grey style. The movie has far-reaching influences, with one of the most popular ones being Kim Jee-woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird, which starred Lee Byung-hun, known for his work on Squid Game.

A Squid Game Actor Starred In An Underrated Western Inspired By Clint Eastwood
Image
Kim Jee-woon's 2008 action-Western film "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" lives up to all three adjectives in its title. That title was, of course, inspired by Sergio Leone's celebrated 1966 Western "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," a film that starred -- in their respective moral roles -- Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach. As any cineaste can tell you, Leone's classic, set in 1862, is about its three main characters seeking a hidden cache of Confederate gold that's hidden in a cemetery. The film runs 161 minutes (or 171 if you're watching the director's cut), and it features many violent, picaresque adventures on the way to its famed three-way shootout.

In Kim's film, the three title roles are played by -- also respectively -- Jung Woo-sun, Lee Byung-hun, and Song Kang-ho, although it takes place in the wilds of Manchuria in 1939 just before the widespread outbreak of World War II.

One Of The Greatest Serial Killer Movies Ever Is Based On A True Story
Image
Before writer and director Bong Joon-ho won the Palme d'Or and swept the Academy Awards with his genre-bending class war masterpiece of Korean cinema, "Parasite," he had created one of the most chilling serial killer movies of all time with "Memories of Murder." The film follows two detectives, one a local of a small Korean town (Bong's frequent collaborator Song Kang-ho) who follows his gut instincts and the other is a more clinical investigator from the big city of Seoul (Kim Sang-kyung), as they investigate a series of horrific rapes and murders in a remote part of South Korea.

The true crime genre is crowded with films that flatten and simplify the investigative process to produce a pat, happy ending. That is why "Memories of Murder" stands out as one of the rare films to acknowledge how little we truly understand about the evil lurking in the darkness. It bears...

Body Swaps and Bloodshed Arrive on Arrow This June
Image
Arrow has revealed its June slate, and it’s a characteristically eclectic mix of the brutal, the bizarre and the barely-seen. From grisly Korean thrillers and resurrected Japanese ghost tales to European horrors and cult cinema favourites, the curated streaming platform continues to expand its niche appeal with a line-up tailored to lovers of the extreme and unconventional.

Kicking off the month is Devils, a slick South Korean thriller featuring a body swap between a detective and the serial killer he has spent years chasing. It arrives alongside Body Parts, a five-part anthology soaked in ritualistic horror and dread, both streaming from 6 June. Together, they lead Arrow’s newly launched Killer K-Horror season, a collection that also includes the underseen zombie satire Zombie for Sale.

From 9 June, viewers can return to Takashi Miike’s gonzo Western Sukiyaki Western Django, the 2007 cult mash-up that blends Leone-styled shootouts with operatic samurai drama.

Neon’s Palme D’Or Whisperer Tom Quinn Reveals Keys To Cannes And Oscar Success: “I’m Happy To Share A Playbook”
Image
There was time when studios thought premiering a film in Cannes in May could turn out to be a major hindrance to that movie’s Oscar chances nine months later. It was a logical assumption. Voters have short memories, and also, if the film doesn’t make a splash on the Croisette, it could be all over for its awards dreams. The fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto became much “safer” (financially and otherwise), and a more logical bet to launch an Oscar campaign, requiring only six months post-launch to keep the contender alive rather than nine. After all, the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Picture had matched only once since Marty won the first Palme in 1955.

That all changed in 2019, when Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner, South Korea’s Parasite, upset conventional thinking and went on to also triumph at the Oscars,...

"A Billionaire Chairwoman": Youn Yuh-Jung Teases Her 'Beef' Season 2 Role and Relationship With Song Kang-ho [Exclusive]
Image
Three months after star Carey Mulligan revealed that production had begun, cameras are still rolling on Season 2 of A24's dark comedy-drama Beef. With a whole new batch of big-name stars, anticipation is running high for what series creator Lee Sung Jin has in store after delivering an acclaimed initial run of episodes that took home eight Emmys in 2024. The shift to an anthology format means viewers will be presented with an entirely new story, dealing with a pair of couples jockeying for power in the elitist world of a Korean billionaire-owned country club instead of Steven Yeun and Ali Wong's rage-filled drivers. At the top of the pyramid will be Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung, who's ready to pull back the curtain just a bit on the status of the series and her upcoming role.

Which Categories Should the Oscars Add Next?
Image
When the 98th annual Oscars arrives next year, it will come with the addition of one long-desired new category: an Academy Award for Achievement in Casting. Two years later, the 100th annual Oscars will include its own new category: Achievement in Stunt Design. After that? We’ve got a few ideas for some other additions.

Both the casting and stunt design awards arrive after years of campaigning from artisans, filmmakers, stars, and even the general public. Make a good enough case, it seems, and AMPAS just might grant you an Oscar statuette-sized wish. Still, it does take time: Before the casting award was announced, the ceremony had not added a new award since 2001, when the organization added Best Animated Feature Film.

Last week’s announcement of the new stunt design category inevitably got us wondering: What other categories should the Oscars add? From bringing back an old favorite, cribbing from other awards shows,...

“As a proud Asian American, it has been a privilege to serve alongside Janet Yang in support and celebration of Asian and Aapi filmmakers,” said Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma. “This endowment builds upon the work the Academy has been doing for decades through our Academy Collection and now through the museum, to share Asian cinema through preservation, public programming, and exhibition.”

Steven Yeun
Steven Yeun’s Top 10 Criterion Favourites
Steven Yeun
If Steven Yeun had decided to pursue law or medical science rather than acting, the cinematic world would have missed out on a gem of an actor. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Yeun is an American actor who has delivered acclaimed performances in the popular television series The Walking Dead, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja, and Lee Chang-dong’s Burning. He is the first Asian American actor to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In 2023, he starred in the dark comedy series Beef (2023), for which he won two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Most recently, he reunited with Bong Joon-ho for his latest sci-fi satire Mickey 17.

With such a list of great honors, it’s undoubted that Yeun is one of the best actors in the film industry. Apart from being a great actor, his script choice is also commendable. The actor discussed his Criterion favorites,...

Bong Joon Ho’s Biggest Challenge: Controlling the Frame, Not the Actors in It
Image
“Mickey 17” director Bong Joon Ho is an obsessive storyboarder. He puts a tremendous amount of time and energy into making the film in his head before stepping on set, mapping out the precise compositions, movement, and edits — which, according to him, remain 99-percent intact in the final version of his films. But while a guest on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, director Bong explained that his attitude toward the actors’ work inside those shots is completely different.

“In terms of directing actors’ performances, I feel like if you’re Clint Eastwood, or if you were a great actor before directing, then you can do it,” said Bong on the podcast via translator Sharon Choi. “But I feel like acting is totally an actor’s realm, the director can provide inspiration and set the general direction of performances.”

The director explained that having a detailed visual plan ahead of time relaxes him,...

Every Bong Joon-ho Movie, Ranked from Great to Greatest
Image
Bong Joon-ho is a one of a kind.

He’s only made 8 films in the past 25 years, but each feature is a precious jewel, expertly chiseled and finely shined. There are a handful of thematic and narrative obsessions that he cleverly reworks throughout his films — the injustices associated with Capitalism, the transformative power of trauma, the importance of communication, animal rights – each time revealing new layers and finding new angles. These are beautiful, powerful, funny, wildly entertaining films. They are endlessly rewatchable and always break new ground. His 2019 feature “Parasite” was the first South Korean movie to ever be nominated for an Academy Award; it wound up winning four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best International Feature Film.

His latest, “Mickey 17,” is one of his best. It’s a searing satire, a sci-fi extravaganza and a deeply empathetic character study (it just so happens that the character...

Parasite (2019) Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed
Bong Joon Ho
Bong Joon-ho is one of the most idiosyncratic filmmakers of the modern era of cinema. The South Korean director has been working on films since the ’90s and has become a mainstay of the international scene over the years. That is, of course, thanks to his impeccable body of work, which showcases his remarkable consistency and ability to deliver wild shifts in tone and style. No two of his films are alike, but they share a DNA that could only be attributed to him – that is, the power of his very singular aesthetic.

After debuting with 2000’s Barking Dogs Never Bite, Bong broke into the industry proper with Memories of Murder in 2003. He followed that up with incredible fare like The Host (2006) and did some Hollywood movies to cement his promising career (Snowpiercer in 2013 and Okja in 2017). However, it was after he returned to fully Korean-language films that he really made his mark.

Maika Monroe in Longlegs (2024)
6 Movies to Watch if You Liked ‘Longlegs’
Maika Monroe in Longlegs (2024)
Neon-disturbed latest indie-horror flick, “Longlegs,” recently became one of the biggest surprise hits this summer. An occult thriller that opened with mostly wide critical acclaim, the movie has slowly gone on to win audiences, as the global box office collection now stands at a stellar $47.3 million. What’s even more impressive is that it became the highest-grossing regional debut ever for the distributor house, marking 2024 as one of the best years for horror genre fans.

But that’s not to say that the Nicolas Cage starrer serves strictly as a genre film. In fact, the discourse regarding “Longlegs” has been pretty varied. While part of the audience has hailed it for evoking an unspoken existential terror manifested through its carnivalesque frights, others have admired the film as a mood-setting procedural thriller. Some are even calling it a long-awaited giant step in serial killer cinema. That’s probably why it’s...

15 Best Korean Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
South Korea has a strong presence in the international landscape of entertainment, especially in music and cinema. The horror genre has been explored in South Korea since the early days of the country's cinema and evolved significantly throughout the decades, becoming a synonym of innovation and expertise in the genre. K-cinema is particularly associated with some of the best supernatural horror and zombie horror movies, yet Korean horror cinema has something for every taste.

Known for blending cultural themes into horror, the genre has been through different phases. Early Korean horror movies were often cautionary tales that reflected tendencies and fears within Korean society, perfectly exemplified by the 1960 psychological horror movie The Housemaid. Around the late 1990s and early 2000s, the genre experienced a renewal in South Korea. This shift propelled the making of more high-octane action horror, like 2006's The Host, and other subgenres that are still popular in Korean cinema today.

Monster Movie Masterpiece 'The Host' From 'Parasite' Director Coming to Max in February
Image
Warner Bros. Discovery and its streaming service are looking to capitalize on the immense talent of South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho in more ways than one. In addition to the upcoming March theatrical release of his highly anticipated 2025 film Mickey 17 (which WB produced and is distributing), the filmmaker's earlier work is making its way to their streaming service. Bong Joon-Ho's monster 2006 movie, The Host, is set to land on Max on February 1st. And the South Korean monster movie is as unconventional as it is gripping.

The film follows a mutated fish that wreaks havoc in a South Korean city, and the Park family, consisting of grandfather Hee-Bong (Byun Hee-Bong) and his three children, Gang-du (Song Kang-ho), Nam-Joo (Bae Doona), and Nam-il (Park Hae-il), who attempt to rescue Gang-Du's teenage daughter Hyun-seo (Go-Ah-sung) after she is seemingly taken away by the mysterious giant monster. The film is based on the true story of King Yeongjo, a famous Joseon king who led the dynasty to its apogee. However, he also suffered from an inferiority complex because he was the son of the previous king’s concubine, who was not of noble birth. Due to this fact, he spent his life constantly trying to achieve perfection, both in his practices and his behavior. He even demanded the same from his son, Prince Sado, who did not seem to share his inclinations, being interested instead in painting and archery. The continuous conflict between father and son eventually resulted in the former locking the latter in a wooden rice chest, leaving him there to die.

Beef Season 2: Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
The Netflix original series Beef has been a steady hit for the streamer, and a second season has been ordered with a brand-new cast. The witty comedy-drama series follows lead characters Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Ali Wong) as a road rage incident spirals out of control and takes over their lives. Joining the ranks of many of Netflix's other big-budget shows, Beef features a fresh concept that has the potential to deliver laughs in abundance while also accentuating its dramatic aspects.

Beef tackles the over-the-top drama of modern life, and it finds its humor through the escalation of pettiness to the absolute extreme. As with most bleak comedies, the basis of the plot merely serves as a jumping-off point for the biting critique of society, and the jokes are multilayered and fresh. Being a co-production with A24, the cinematic aspects of Beef weren't neglected either, giving the...

'Mickey 17' Image Brings Double Robert Pattinson in Bong Joon-ho's Delayed Sci-Fi Movie
Image
Despite numerous release date changes, Bong Joon-ho's next film, Mickey 17, is still highly anticipated. The movie is based on the novel Mickey7 and tells the story of expendable employee Mickey (Robert Pattinson). Whenever he dies on one sort of expedition or another, a carbon copy of him is made with most memories still intact. However, things get dicey when a Mickey copy, who was thought dead, returns to base when a new Mickey has already been made. The initial trailer for the film shows only a glimpse of the chaos that ensues when the two Mickey's come into contact.

Now, ScreenRant has shared an exclusive new image of the film as part of their 2025 Movie Preview. Bong Joon-ho is a director whose projects have received plenty of attention, especially since his 2019 film Parasite took home the Oscars for Best Picture and Best International Feature, the first non-English speaking...

Back in October we learned that Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, Cailee Spaeny, and Youn Yuh-jung would lead the ensemble this time out — and now we're getting word that Parasite star Song Kang-ho is aboard for some Beef too.

Per Deadline's reporting, the regular Bong Joon Ho collaborator is the latest addition to Beef Season 2's cast, though his specific role in the show remains under wraps at this point. What we do know however is that this inbound...

The Firefighters (2024)
South Korean Film Market Faces Challenges Despite Local Success
The Firefighters (2024)
The South Korean film market produced mixed results this week, indicating persistent volatility. Local projects performed well, although they struggled to sustain the recent box office revival trend.

The firefighter drama “The Firefighters” was the weekend’s biggest hit. Directed by the renowned Kwak Gyeong-Taek, the film grossed $4.3 million and had 657,124 admissions, accounting for 41.9% of the market. Its captivating story follows a rookie firefighter and a seasoned veteran as they navigate rescue operations’ emotional and physical challenges, emphasizing themes of heroism and sacrifice.

Despite this local success, the overall box office performance revealed major challenges for the industry. The top ten films collectively earned less than $10 million, a significant drop from last week’s $16 million. This drop indicates ongoing difficulties in keeping audiences engaged.

Disney’s animated sequel “Moana 2” maintained its strong international appeal in second place, earning $2.5 million and 389,500 admissions. The film remains popular with local audiences and...

10 Best Korean Horror Movies
Image
Many of the best Korean horror movies have earned praise from critics and audiences worldwide. Though a majority of the horror films produced in South Korea implement tropes familiar to all audiences, they also introduce themes and mythological antagonists that are culturally specific, allowing their stories to feel like something entirely brand new to worldwide audiences. Several of the Korean horror movies listed contain the expected type of violence and bloody scenes associated with the genre, but rather than focusing on gory kills and frequent jump scares, most Korean horror movies tend to human aspects.

This is just one of the many ways Korean horror movies differ from those in America, and these differences allow such films to stand out among a large number of horror releases each year. Acclaimed directors like Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook are among the talented South Korean filmmakers who have helped bring to life...

Best Korean Action Movies, Ranked
Image
In the 21st century, South Korean cinema has experienced unprecedented success, both in terms of international acclaim and box office profits. South Korean cinema has found a cult audience in the United States among cinephiles seeking to escape the sanitized nature of mainstream Hollywood cinema.

After decades of little international attention, South Korean cinema began to make a global splash in the late 1990s through a movement now known as New Korean Cinema. This collection of films became renowned for using the genre to explore social issues affecting South Korean society. Since the birth of New Korean Cinema, directors such as Park Chan-wook, Kim Jee-woon, and Na Hong-jin have created some of the best action thrillers of the 21st century. Oldboy, I Saw the Devil,...

10 Monster Movies Where The Creature Wasn't The Point Of The Film
Image
Monster movies are a classic feature of the horror genre and have deep roots in cinema because of the universal nature of the narratives. However, the creatures in these movies aren't what they seem to be on the outside, as they often serve as a metaphor for the overarching themes and critiques the plot focuses on. This becomes especially clear when the monsters featured in the film aren't seen onscreen for long periods of time, as the narrative is more concerned with the development of the characters and their dynamics.

The Universal classic monster movies helped establish the genre as a place for the fears and anxieties of humanity to be explored safely. Since then, monsters have taken on many forms in cinema, and how they manifest visually will determine how the characters and audience interpret them. Whether they're giant creatures, grotesque, or can pass as humans, they all serve...
