‘Empire of the Dark’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Steve Barkett, Christopher Barkett, Tera Hendrickson, Richard Harrison, Dawn Wildsmith, John Henry Richardson, Patricia Schiotis, Joseph Pilato, Jan Bryant | Written and Directed by Steve Barkett

In the 80s and 90s there were so many post-apocalyptic films. Many of the most fun out-of-this-world ones were of the low-budget B movie variety, and we’ve probably all heard the term “so bad it’s good” when it comes to these films.

Steve Barkett is a name you may not know off the top of your head, but if you love those B-movies from that era, you’ll know his films. In 1982 he made The Aftermath, and in 1995 he made Attack of the 60 Foot Centrefold. But in between those two films, in 1991, he wrote, produced, directed and starred in Empire of the Dark. Vci Entertainment and Mvd Visual previously brought us The Aftermath on Blu-ray. Now, as we are coming upon the...

‘Goblin Queen’ is a Fantasy Short ‘Narnia’-Lovers Will Adore
Short of the DayWhen the figments of a child’s imagination aren’t imaginary.

I’m not much of a fantasy fan, but even I was beguiled by this selection for Short of the Day, Goblin Queen, written and directed by Reed Shusterman. Think of it like a darker Narnia movie but from the perspective of a parent stuck here in the real world. That’s the situation in which Winona (Stacey Mosley, The Muppets, Swan’s Crossing) finds herself when her daughter Amber Lynn (Amy Letcher, Black Sails) is revealed to be the ruler of a magical land in another dimension. Amber Lynn keeps leaping back and forth between realms, and as you might expect, while making one of these transitions home, she’s followed by a most-inhospitable goblin.

Goblin Queen is concise and direct, it knows exactly what it is and what we expect from it and starts delivering as promptly as a good narrative...

She has appeared in Army of Darkness and her love of zombies has resulted in Plague Town, a zombie novel that was released earlier this month. We recently had a chance to ask her some questions, and learned more about the inspiration for the novel, working on Army of Darkness, and who she’d want on her zombie survival team.

Dana and Titan Books are also giving readers a chance to participate in the Plague Town Pandemic Tour, where the winner will receive a signed copy of the book and will have a character named after them in the next novel in the series:

Indie Web Series Vampire Mob Back For Season 2
Kirsten Vangsness in Vampire Mob (2010)
Award winning filmmaker Joe Wilson brings us Vampire Mob, an indie web series showcasing a hitman vampire forced to live with his mother-in-law, for eternity. The series is completely independent, getting its money strictly through audience donations; they raised over $10,000 in order to create their story.

“After losing all our money on Kickstarter, we raised the budget of $10,000 on our own site and got to make a story – no network, no company, no FCC, no sponsor – nothing to fuck it up! Just people helping people tell a story. We shot an 80-page script with 23 actors, and I’ve never worked harder making a project happen than this one! We also worked with fight choreographers Jan Bryant and Dan Speaker, who have worked on Hook, Master and Commander, and Army of Darkness.”

Among the cast members in the show are Emmy winning actress Marcia Wallace (The Simpsons) and Tony winner Rae Allen...

Web Series Vampire Mob - A Totally Indie Effort - Returns for Season 2
It was back in the summer of 2010 that we first reported on Joe Wilson's web series Vampire Mob, and now we've heard from Joe that Season Two has begun with six episodes already available, including “Dinner for Six” with cast members Kirsten Vangsness ("Criminal Minds"), Emmy winner Marcia Wallace ("The Simpsons") and Tony winner Rae Allen ("The Sopranos").

The road hasn't always been a smooth one for writer/director/editor Wilson, who told us, "After losing all our money on Kickstarter, we raised the budget of $10,000 on our own site and got to make a story - no network, no company, no FCC, no sponsor - nothing to fuck it up! Just people helping people tell a story. We shot an 80-page script with 23 actors, and I've never worked harder making a project happen than this one!
