Anson Mount's Highly Underrated Western Series Hits Hulu This Month
Image
Hulu subscribers will have a chance to check out an underappreciated Western series this month. On Sept. 15, the streaming platform will add all five seasons of Hell on Wheels.

Created by Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton, Hell on Wheels originally ran for fives seasons on AMC between 2011 and 2016. Its reviews were largely positive with the fifth and final season garnering especially strong acclaim with a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite sticking the landing, the series doesn't seem to have garnered the attention it deserved in recent years, though its fan base continues to grow as more people discover the show.

‘Deep Woods’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Jilon VanOver, Eddie Spears, Tony Denison, Jon Proudstar, Jessie Prez, Rachel Cerda | Written and Directed by Steve Laughlin

Deep Woods, the first feature from writer/director Steve Laughlin, begins in quite a different location, the opulent chrome and glass offices of the architectural firm owned by Ty Ellsworth. Ty has, seemingly out of the blue, got in touch with his college buddy Nick and suggested a hunting trip. Ty wants to “experience nature before it’s paved over” and since Nick is both Native American and a game warden, who better to go with?

For the film’s first half hour, Laughlin gives us a contrast between the world Ty knows and the rural, backwoods area Nick lives in. A tribal dance, talk of wendigos, a run-in with some loggers at a bar and of course, warnings from Sheriff Hadden to stay on the trails once they’re in the woods.

And, also has an incomparable philosophical subject: Nicolas Cage wears a Stetson!

About the Movie The Old Way

A story about vengeance, shooting and… Nicolas Cage, who is still the absolute star of the B Series with the personality that he has after that Oscar (for Leaving Las Vegas), which more than one academic must regret having given to him. This "animated feature film is a touching, adventure-filled tale about the life of White Fang, a wolf dog who's life unfolds from being a puppy in the wild to dog-fighting in Fort Yukon." The film is made by a Spanish-Luxembourgish filmmaker and it originally comes from an animation company in France, which is why the original release title is Croc-Blanc. This Us release from Netflix features an English-speaking voice cast with Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Eddie Spears. And it's already available now to stream if you want to watch it. The watercolor-esque animation style for this works well for animals, but it makes the humans look so jagged. Still might be good. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Alexandre Espigares' White Fang,...

White Fang (2018)
Film Review: ‘White Fang’
White Fang (2018)
The wild wolfdog isn’t the only thing that gets tamed in “White Fang,” Luxembourgish animator Alexandre Espigares’s ravishingly designed new take on the old Jack London chestnut: London’s hard-bitten survivalist narrative is in for a wholesome cleanup too. Ostensibly more faithful to the novel than Randal Kleiser’s 1991 live-action family adventure — rather than introducing a human protagonist, it wisely stays loyal to London’s predominant mutt’s-eye-view — it nonetheless retains some of that film’s Disneyfied plot adjustments, and tempers certain visceral details to puppydog-cute effect. That’s understandable given the junior target audience, though it’s uncertain whether smaller fry will be sufficiently enraptured by the film’s richly rendered Yukon environment to wait out its stately, staggered storytelling.

Either way, enterprising families can find out for themselves via Netflix, which scooped up Espigares’s film after a warmly received premiere in Sundance’s Kids sidebar.

‘White Fang’ Review: Jack London’s Classic Story Is Vividly Reimagined in Lush Animated Offering — Sundance 2018
Jack London
Jack London’s “White Fang,” the classic story of a wild wolf-dog rendered against the harsh environment of gold-rush Alaska, has spawned a number of cinematic adaptations — a well-regarded 1991 live-action feature starring Ethan Hawke, a 1993 animated series — but it’s in the hands of French animator Alexandre Espigares that the tale comes to its most vivid life. Adapted from London’s novel by a cadre of screenwriters (there are three listed in the film’s official press kit: Dominique Monfery, Philippe Lioret, and Serge Frydman), Espigares’ film captures the essence of London’s hard-knock story while reimagining it for a slightly younger audience (in short, it’s still traumatic, but not traumatic enough to drive away the audience who will also love it so very much).

That the film includes some star-studded voice talent for this American version (the film will be translated for a variety of territories), including Nick Offerman,...

Hell On Wheels Season 2 Preview
The first two episodes of AMC's post-Civil War Western drama Hell on Wheels almost immediately remedies everything that made it likable but ultimately very uneven fare last year.  I reviewed that first season knowing the series was not Deadwood and couldn't be, but given the similarities of timeframe and location, comparisons were inevitable.  Though Hell on Wheels' primary protagonist Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a Confederate vigilante, shares somewhat similar emotional reluctant-hero complexities with Deadwood's Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), railroad magnate Doc Durant (Colm Meaney) is no Al Swearengen (Ian McShane).  There are plenty of character parallels to be drawn, and Deadwood wins almost all of them, but it doesn't mean Hell on Wheels isn't good television.  It's just not great television.  At least, it wasn't.  But its second season is already looking up.  Hit the jump for why you should consider tuning in for another dose of this worthy Western.

Blu-ray Review: First Season of AMC’s Watchable Western ‘Hell on Wheels’
Chicago – AMC’s watchable western series “Hell on Wheels” is just good enough to sustain audience interest despite its meandering plot. As soon as Gustavo Santaolalla’s catchy theme music kicks in over the brooding title sequence, it’s effortless to become absorbed within Joe and Tony Gayton’s handsomely photographed dramatization of the first transcontinental railroad’s epic construction in 1865.

The most intriguing aspect about the series is how it parallels the expansion of the railroad with the colonization of America itself, and how necessary progress was forged by men with little more on their minds than self-serving greed. Financier Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney) has figured out an excellent way to make a fortune off the railroad with the help of government subsidies. Since he’s being paid $16,000 per mile, he intends to add as many arcs and curves to his railroad as possible, rather than have it chug straight to its destination.

Melbourne actor Ben Esler: From The Pacific to AMC's Hell On Wheels
Note to overseas Irish pub bartenders: you may have been fooled by Australian actor Ben Esler.

.We would go to the Irish pub and try it out and either it worked or they were very polite . nobody said anything,. Esler says of his Irish impression.

That thick Irish impression has been one of his keys to success in Tinseltown, utilising it on new AMC production, Hell On Wheels.

Other actors on the series including Phil Burke, Colm Meaney and Dominique McElligott helped the 29-year-old Melbourne actor get the accent down for his character, Sean McGinnes . who.s .a little budding Al Capone..

.Sean is a guy who.s come from poverty and he.s desperate to make it in America but he.s a little bit ruthless and he can be a bit scary and dangerous sometimes,. Esler says of the young Irishman looking to make his fortune in the west.

‘Hell On Wheels’ Season 1, Episode 9: ‘Timshel’ Recap
At the end of last week’s Hell on Wheels Bohannan, Elam and a small group of Union soldiers were besieged by the Cheyenne, led by Black Moon’s brother Pawnee Killer. While things looked dire for our band of vengeance-seeking soldiers, through some sheer tenacity and creative killing techniques, they managed to thwart off their attackers by rendering them all lifeless.

‘Timshel’ starts off big, with Joseph Black Moon (Eddie Spears) finally forced to take the life of his violence-loving brother Pawnee Killer (Gerald Auger), and then explaining to Bohannan that in order for anyone to believe that the path of the railroad is safe, the southerner is going to have to take back some “proof.” Of course, Black Moon is referring to the scalps of the fallen Cheyenne, but Bohannan refuses, despite ...

AMC to Ride ‘Hell on Wheels’ Into A Second Season and The Significance of Standing On Its Own
Even though the most cynical of critics will tell you that the western is dead, cable viewers and more importantly, AMC thought differently. The cable network that successfully launched Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead gave Hell on Wheels a second season to continue its tale of the Transcontinental Railroad during the Reconstruction era of the United States.

Hell on Wheels fit right in with AMC’s other original scripted dramas, featuring a complex knot of longer, drawn-out serialized narratives instead of quicker, stand-alone stories. It looks at the massive good and bad that the train brought including the greed and corruption; it sheds light on the less than smooth transition for the emancipated slaves and the ever-changing climate of the immigrant.

With the corpses still warm from the Civil war, Hell on Wheels follows specifically Anson Mount who stars as Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier looking...
