Daisy Edgar-Jones and Will Poulter on the “Hopeful” Depiction of Queer Life in 1950s America in ‘On Swift Horses’
Image
Daisy Edgar-Jones cites admiration as her first draw to the buzzy TIFF film On Swift Horses. “I loved the producers behind the film. I love Call Me by Your Name and Nomadland, so I was so excited about them taking this project on,” she says of Peter Spears and Mollye Asher while seated alongside her co-star Will Poulter in the middle of a busy press day at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere Sept. 8.

“And then I read the script, and I thought it was so beautiful and lyrical and just this kind of gorgeous exploration of love and self-discovery.” Her cherry on top? “When I found out the cast — Will, Jacob [Elordi], Sasha [Calle] and Diego [Calva] — I was like this is such a cool opportunity to be in a period film with a really exciting young cast.”

Set in the 1950s, the film, adapted from author...

Peter Spears on the Difference in Creating the Sex Scenes in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Call Me by Your Name’ Versus ‘Queer’
Image
“Nomadland” Oscar-winning producer Peter Spears is winning 2024 with two films: Daniel Minahan’s “On Swift Horses” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer.” For Guadagnino, Spears has also produced “Call Me By Your Name,” and made a cameo in it, as well as “Bones and All.”

“Well, I think that the more you work with someone, the more you just get a sort of muscle memory with somebody,” Spears tells IndieWire about his creative partnership with Guadagnino at the TIFF premiere of “On Swift Horses,” which he also produced. “The trust in each other goes deeper. “One of my favorite things I’ve done in my professional career is getting to work with [Guadagnino]. I say we’re brothers, we’re sisters. I feel really fortunate to have had the experience.”

Spears revealed that he is currently working on two new projects with Guadagnino. He confirmed that one of the projects, which was previously announced,...

‘On Swift Horses’ Review: Jacob Elordi & Daisy Edgar-Jones In Star-Crossed Noir-ish Queer Love Story — Toronto Film Festival
Image
It is the Eisenhower era, a time of post-war promise in California, a place for new beginnings and new love. Into this setting, Shannon Pufahl placed her debut novel On Swift Horses, which was a prize winner for lesbian fiction, but in the movie version, this becomes a more complicated romantic drama, mixed with gambling, noir-ish tones, horse racing and a complex love triangle that don’t all mesh as well as they might, but give this attractive and talented cast an “A” for trying to make it all plausible.

Lee (Will Poulter), an agreeable guy has come home from the Korean War to settle down and start a dream kind of family life with his wife Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones), and for a short while, all seems just fine until Lee’s wayward brother Julius enters the picture after some time on the road. Lee’s hope is they all...

Daniel Craig’s Racy Turn in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ Earns Raves at Venice Film Festival With 9-Minute Standing Ovation
Image
The Venice Film Festival showered Luca Guadagnino’s Queer with lots of love Tuesday night at the film’s world premiere. In particular, the capacity crowd inside Sala Grande went wild for star Daniel Craig, who broke away from his James Bond persona for a provocative and challenging role opposite Drew Starkey, who also earned cheers from the capacity crowd that included Pedro Almodóvar.

The Spanish auteur, who is also in the Venice competition with his buzzy drama The Room Next Door, was seated across the row from Guadagnino and his cast. He embraced them one by one during the lengthy standing ovation. Craig looked emotional at several points as his wife, Rachel Weisz, was beaming and hollering in unison with the crowd while standing on her feet.

Queer world premiere just wrapped with huge 9.5 minute standing ovation for the wild Luca Guadagnino art film. Yes, it has racy elements...

Meet Freddy Macdonald, the 23-Year-Old ‘Sew Torn’ Filmmaker Who Dazzled SXSW
Image
The phrase, “a change of heart,” would forever alter the course of Freddy Macdonald’s life.

Last month, the 23-year-old wunderkind’s feature directorial debut, Sew Torn, premiered at South by Southwest to glowing reviews, capping an extraordinary five-plus years for the young filmmaker. As a high school senior, Macdonald — whose American family had relocated to Switzerland a handful of years earlier — started applying to film schools, and he decided to take a lofty crack at the American Film Institute’s (AFI) graduate program. As part of the application process, Macdonald had to make a short film that told a story involving the aforementioned idiom, “a change of heart,” and so he started trading ideas with his father, Fred Macdonald.

The father-son duo soon found themselves in the oeuvre of the Coen brothers, specifically No Country for Old Men. The inciting incident of the Coens’ best picturing-winning neo-Western involves Josh Brolin...

Since he was previously nominated for producing “In the Bedroom,” he could follow Jim Burke (“Green Book”) and Dan Janvey and Peter Spears (“Nomadland”) as the fourth person in five years to take the academy’s top prize on his second bid.

Anthony Chen Talks Sundance Title ‘Drift’, Upcoming Projects And Plans To Shoot In Hong Kong
Image
Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen is on a roll – his English-language debut Drift is premiering at Sundance Film Festival, he has Chinese-language drama The Breaking Ice being readied for festival play later this year, and several other directing projects in different languages at various stages of development and pre-production.

Drift, which stars Cynthia Erivo as a Liberian refugee scratching out an existence on a Greek island, is thematically not a million miles away from Chen’s previous two features – Ilo Ilo and Wet Season – in that they’re stories about outsiders or people struggling to find their place in the world and fit in. “I seem to gravitate to telling stories about outsiders and the bonds, or the human connections, that we make between strangers,” says Chen, who has some experience with feeling dislocated, as he grew up in Singapore but spent many years living in the UK.

Image
Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will factor in this year’s movie awards races.

Bones and All is the acclaimed cannibal romance reteaming Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet following their work together on the Sundance breakout Call Me by Your Name.

The MGM film written by Guadagnino’s regular collaborator David Kajganich —who’d previously penned his features Bigger Splash and Suspiria — is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis. It tells the story of Maren (Taylor Russell), a young woman in 1980s Virginia who leans into her cannibalistic urges after striking up a relationship with the nomadic “eater,” Lee (Chalamet).

Guadagnino told Deadline in a recent edition of the Crew Call podcast that when he first read Kajganich’s script, he didn’t view it as a work of “horror” — instead gravitating towards its...

Bones and All: Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal romance comes to PVOD next week
Image
Suspiria remake (watch it Here) director Luca Guadagnino’s horror film / cannibal love story Bones and All has received good reviews – it’s sitting at 82 positive on Rotten Tomatoes, and our own JimmyO gave the film an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. But it’s not the sort of movie that was ever going to set the box office on fire, and it has pulled in just 11 million during its three weeks of release. So it’s no surprise that United Artists will be sending the movie to PVOD on December 13th.

Bones and All is in good company, as IndieWire reports that major awards season contenders The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans (a box office failure directed by Steven Spielberg) will also be reaching PVOD on the same date.

Directed by Guadagnino from a screenplay by his Suspiria collaborator David Kajganich, Bones and All stars Taylor Russell...
