Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

After toiling in the trenches with Nick Box’s three releases from the week of April 13, it’s something of a relief to jump ahead to May 8, 2023 with a discussion of Louis DeStefano’s Amityville Emanuelle.

Presumably influenced by the French book and film series of the same name (minus the extra “m”), Geno McGahee’s screenplay returns to a tried and true Amityville premise: a cursed object, a spectral haunting, and some sexy shenanigans.

Amityville: Emanuelle immediately situates itself within the “franchise”s canon with recreated footage of Ronald DeFeo’s murder spree in April of 1974. This is familiar territory: we’ve seen variations of the shootings in Amityville II, The Amityville Legacy, Amityville: The Awakening and more.

New England filmmaker, Geno McGahee, is known for his Scary Tales franchise, beginning with his 2008 original Scary Tales, followed by Scary Tales: Last Stop, Scary Tales: Dead Zone and the upcoming October release, Scary Tales: Dark Walker. The interest in the series has led McGahee to release a series, featuring 8 episodes in season one and the same expected for season two, which is currently in development.

McGahee noted that “my anthology films have really taken off and it has led me to this decision to start a series. I’ve always been a fan of shows like Tales From The Darkside and Tales From The Crypt and I’m hoping to produce something similar with my own creations coming to life and entertaining the audience.”

Scary Tales: Dead Zone has just been unleashed on Tubi bringing a treat this Halloween season. Featuring a classic anthology formula with a wraparound tale, twists and tales that are based on true events, this horror film has a little bit of everything.
