Stars: Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Adrian Martinez, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Danny Sapani, Barbara Probst, Marc Rismann, Joseph Millson | Written by Ken Nolan, Gary Spinelli, Robert Littell | Directed by James Hawes

Rami Malek stars as a tech genius CIA agent gone rogue in The Amateur, a ridiculous, but nonetheless entertaining thriller that could easily have been titled Revenge of the Nerd. As such, it has its fair share of good moments, but it’s also not without its flaws.

Malek plays Charlie Heller, a vaguely on-the-spectrum CIA surveillance expert, whose life is brutally upended when his beloved wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is taken hostage and murdered by terrorists while on a business trip in London. When his CIA bosses (Holt McCallany and Danny Sapani) refuse to go after the people responsible, a vengeful Charlie blackmails them into giving him special ops training...

The Wild True Story Behind The Tom Cruise Crime Comedy American Made
Image
In 2014, director Doug Liman and star Tom Cruise brought us what became known as Cruise's best sci-fi action movie in "Edge of Tomorrow." Three years later, the filmmaker and acting pair re-teamed for a wholly different project that, while it isn't necessarily remembered as one of Cruise's best movies, is easily one of the actor's most fun.

"American Made" saw Cruise play thrill-seeking pilot Barry Seal, who after working for Trans World Airlines (Twa) is recruited by the CIA in the late-70s to fly reconnaissance missions over Central America. Soon, Seal finds himself working for the Medellin Cartel, who ask the pilot to smuggle drugs back into the United States on his return flights, making the former commercial pilot very rich very quickly. Meanwhile, he starts running guns to the Nicaraguan Contras but all the while the DEA has been paying attention, and Seal quickly finds himself pursued by multiple agencies,...

Rami Malek’s ‘The Amateur’ Is a Litmus Test for James Gunn’s Upcoming Project as Movie Hits Prime Video
Image
It has been a while since James Gunn took control of the Dcu, and his soft rebooted version of the respective super-verse seems to be unfolding pretty epically already. For one, his action series Creature Commandos fared perfectly well with fans and critics worldwide, and his upcoming project Lanterns is expected to follow suit.

But wait: Although it is not known yet if this forthcoming television series based on different Green Lantern characters from DC Comics will be good enough or not, Rami Malek’s The Amateur just might help with that, since it has been tamed by none other than the very director who is also involved with the DC show: James Hawes.

The Amateur director has also worked on James Gunn’s Lanterns James Hawes in an interview with The Filmmaker’s Podcast | Credits: @The Filmmaker’s Podcast /YouTube.

Rami Malek & Laurence Fishburne's Action Movie With 88% Audience Rt Score Gets Digital Release Date
Image
While there are some big-name action blockbusters still to come, 2025 has already been a notable year for action films. There have been a lot of long-awaited sequels, including Den of Thieves: Pantera, which came out seven years after the 2018 original. A similar sequel release happened with The Accountant 2, which came out at the end of April, nearly a decade after the first movie's 2016 release date. The most successful action releases of this year have come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is climbing the charts.

One of this year's action movie leads was Rami Malek. The star had his biggest breakout role with the USA Network series Mr. Robot, in which he played Elliot and received copious acclaim. After this opened the door to more roles, Malek became a true movie star, later winning an Academy Award for playing Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

James Hawes Talks ‘The Amateur’ Genre Swerve and the “Americana Heart” of ‘Lanterns’
Image
For two decades, James Hawes has quietly been one of the industry’s most accomplished television directors. He’s always exhibited a knack for genre storytelling, but season one of the Gary Oldman-led Slow Horses reaffirmed how he can effectively add an unexpected wrinkle to a well-trodden genre like the spy thriller. That prowess now extends to his second feature film, and first major studio film, The Amateur, starring Oscar winner Rami Malek.

The British filmmaker presents the elegant look and feel of a Jason Bourne or Jack Ryan movie, only he’s chronicling an underestimated CIA analyst character in Charlie Heller (Malek) who has no choice but go out into the field himself. Adapted by screenwriters Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, Hawes’ reimagining of Robert Littell’s 1981 novel tracks Charlie’s defiant globe-trotting pursuit of the terrorists who killed his wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan).

The updated take has...

Film Review: Non-Professional Storytelling Limits ‘The Amateur’
Image
Chicago – “The Amateur” is a movie for grownups that never manages to stand out. It’s an ordinary, globe- trotting revenge thriller without much of any pizazz, like a Netflix-type movie perfect for folding laundry by, that somehow managed to get into theaters. Rami Malek in the title role is interesting … the story is not.

Malik stars is a low level CIA analyst named Charlie. a whiz with computers who can decode complicated computer systems in seemingly the blink of an eye, but isn’t much for field work or human interaction – outside his connection with his wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan). This all changes when she is killed during a hostage situation in London. In about the time it takes to order a donut, Malik has deciphered the identity of his wife’s killers and presented his treasure trove of digital evidence to his direct superiors, only to find them slow walking the investigation.

“If someone like the Joker is going to flinch…”: One Rami Malek Scene in the Amateur Was Taken Straight Out of Heath Ledger’s Playbook in the Dark Knight

If someone like the Joker is going to flinch… you know it’s serious. Rami Malek didn’t just channel chaos in The Amateur; he practically borrowed a page from Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight playbook and lit it on fire.

There’s one intense scene where Malek’s icy stare and quiet menace scream “Gotham’s most wanted,” and well, it feels like Joker in a tailored suit.

Rami Malek on Producing ‘The Amateur,’ Heath Ledger’s Joker Influence and a ‘Mr. Robot’ Film
Image
Oscar winner Rami Malek is now a full-fledged producer of The Amateur, something he attributes to the cutting room floor of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

Malek had toiled away on a significant monologue only to be greeted with its absence upon finally seeing PTA’s 2012 drama. However, the disappointment incepted the idea of becoming a producer someday so that he could have a voice in the making of such decisions. Since then, he’s accumulated an Emmy via Mr. Robot, an Oscar by way of Bohemian Rhapsody, a notable role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and the honor of serving as the villain in the Broccoli family’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die.

The aforementioned accomplishments meant that Malek had attained enough cachet to pursue his dream of producing a film, and that became James Hawes’ The Amateur. The Ken Nolan- and Gary Spinelli...

Rami Malek Weighs in on Mr. Robot Reunion 6 Years Later
Image
Academy Award-winning actor Rami Malek had his breakout role in the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, for which he received several accolades. As he's set to star in a different spy action film that involves cybersecurity and hacking, the actor also looked back at his role.

Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake, while promoting his upcoming film, The Amateur, where he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer and vigilante, Malek addressed the possibility of a Mr. Robot reunion. "I don't think it'd be very different," he said of what the project would look like. "I just saw [series creator Sam Esmail] in London a week and a half ago. We had a typical British Sunday roast together. We're brothers. We will always be brothers and Christian [Slater] is here in New York on Broadway, so go check that out. We all keep up."

The actor also talked about his hacking and computer skills.

Rami Malek's New Spy Thriller Falls Short of Matching His James Bond Movie's Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Rami Malek stars in the new spy thriller filmThe Amateur, coming to theaters on April 11. With the film's early reviews, The Amateur has managed to score a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it will have a bit higher to climb with added reviews to have a chance at matching the score set by his James Bond movie.

Currently, The Amateur is scored at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much higher audience score of 86%. The critics' score falls short of matching the score set by 2021's No Time to Die, the Bond film featuring Malek as the villain, which has scores of 83% and 88%. Even so, approaching 70% is a respectable score for The Amateur, which many critics had a great time watching.

"The Amateur doesn’t attempt to rewrite the book in terms of vigilante revenge stories, but it avoids the kind of slipshod errors that hobble most espionage fare," Eddie Harrison of film-authority.

Rami Malek Spy Thriller 'The Aamateur' Gets a Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The first reviews forThe Amateur, which releases in theaters later this week, have begun to roll out. The Rami Malek-led spy thriller from 20th Century Studios has the award-winning Mr. Robot actor go back to the world of coding and vigilantism, this time in a big-budget action film. Does it live up to expectations? Despite some comparisons to other successful franchises, The Amateur may not be the all-out hit the studio is hoping for, but it could be more than enough for fans of Malek and the genre.

As of this writing, The Amateur has been hovering around a 66-to-70% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics based on 35 reviews. The overall consensus thus far is leaning towards positive, reflecting the early reactions that surfaced online a week ago. However, it seems some critics are mixed on the by-the-numbers story, which positions Malek as a former CIA coder who is...

The Amateur
Image
The revenge thriller is among the most satisfying staples of cinema: generally, it features a hero with a very particular set of skills physically dominating anyone and everyone who gets in their way, en route to the ultimate catharsis of seeing wrongdoers get their comeuppance. That’s not the case in director James Hawes’ sophomore feature, The Amateur. Based on the novel by Robert Littell, our bad-guy-hunting hero isn’t a highly trained former assassin. He’s not even competent with a gun. Instead, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a desk-bound cryptographer, a “nerdy fella who works on computers”, as one character calls him. On paper, it’s an intriguing approach. But the execution is only semi-successful.

The Amateur is at its best in the first act. Once his wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is murdered and Charlie commits to going after the killers, Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli’s script...

‘The Amateur’ Review: Rami Malek Is a CIA Analyst Turned Avenger in a Thriller More By-the-Code Than It Looks
Image
Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), the mad-as-hell secret-agent geek brainiac at the center of “The Amateur,” is a CIA analyst who works five floors underground at Langley, in the Decryption and Analysis department. There, he’s a master of all things coded and virtual, a surveillance hacker par excellence. Out of the office, he and his adoring business-person wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), reside in a renovated farmhouse and appear to have the perfect life. So when Sarah, on a corporate trip to London, gets taken hostage by a cadre of terrorists and is killed on the spot, it’s as if Charlie’s entire existence had been wiped away. Since the tragedy was an international incident, his bosses at the Agency assure him that the perpetrators will be hunted down. But that’s not enough for Charlie. It won’t sate his rage, his desire for vengeance. Instead, Charlie says, “I want to kill them himself.

The Amateur (2025) Movie Review: Revenge As a Dish Best-Served Lukewarm
Rami Malek
Typecasting is a double-edged sword. On one hand, we’ve heard countless stories of idiosyncratic actors lamenting that what made them unique has been diluted by a nonstop series of cookie-cutter roles, giving them little, if any, opportunity to show any range. On the other hand, for some performers, it’s likely that without that typecasting, they may never find consistent work to begin with.

Not to say that Rami Malek should be thankful that the roles he receives seem to be contingent upon him recycling the same awkward veneer for which we all recognize him—the man did, after all, win an Oscar for a vaguely convincing, party-trick imitation of Freddie Mercury. Rather, in the case of “The Amateur,” it would be difficult to come to any conclusion aside from this role having been curated entirely for the actor’s fidgety sensibilities.

In the film, Malek goes full chameleon...

The Amateur Review: Rami Malek Is The Anti James Bond In This Solid, No-Frills Thriller
Image
Move over James Bond, Jack Reacher, and Jason Bourne -- there's a new action hero in town and his name is Charlie Heller. Okay, so that's probably not the sexiest or most eye-catching attempt to bolster the ranks of our biggest fictional spies but, in all fairness, that's hardly what "The Amateur" is trying to accomplish anyway. For starters, there's the matter of our unconventional leading man. Rami Malek, talented as he obviously is, isn't exactly anyone's first choice for a CIA agent out on a quest for vengeance against the criminals who murdered his wife in cold blood. For that matter, neither would James Hawes land at the top of most filmmaker wish lists for a story like this, despite building up a solid career as a television director (most recently on "Slow Horses"). But if there's anything this quiet, unassuming, and minimalist thriller is mainly about, it's this: Appearances can be deceiving,...

‘The Amateur’ Review: Rami Malek In Gripping Global Spy Thriller That Is Bourne For Computer Nerds
Image
Spy thrillers never have been out of vogue and generally rely on action stars to drive the usual scenarios in this well-worn genre, but The Amateur is an effective twist on the formula by plucking a rather nondescript CIA analyst and letting him turn the tables on the bad guys using his own smarts and non-physical skills.

It really becomes Jason Bourne for nerds and as such stands right up there with Bourne as one of the more exciting spy thrillers in many years — at least one that is different and emotional with a nice human touch to it. The fun of it all, in addition to the obvious international globetrotting to the likes of London, Paris, Marseilles and Istanbul, is watching Rami Malek’s Charlie Heller pull off the impossible against formidable terrorists in clever ways no one sees coming.

Charlie is a happily married and devoted CIA analyst,...

‘The Amateur’ Review: Rami Malek Kills People with Math in a Jason Bourne Movie for Stem Kids
Image
Logic suggests that rogue CIA assassin Jason Bourne might be much less of a threat if — instead of a shredded government super-soldier with a sniper’s accuracy and no personal attachments — he were a vaguely autistic wife guy who couldn’t hit someone with a bazooka if they were standing right in front of him. James Hawes’ “The Amateur” begs to differ.

An aggressively competent spy thriller that has less use for logic than its lead actor does for his smile, this globe-trotting Robert Littell adaptation would have us believe that no one is more dangerous than a math nerd who refuses to think of himself as a killer, and the film makes a compelling enough case to sustain itself across the entire television season’s worth of plot that it packs into two hours. Rami Malek has made that argument before, of course, and the “Mr. Robot” star’s...

‘The Amateur’ Review: A Relaxed and Pleasurable Throwback to the Spy Pulp of Yesteryear
Image
A lot has changed in geopolitics since Charles Jarrott’s 1981 adaptation of Robert Littell’s novel The Amateur. Today, terrorism definitions are significantly muddier than the binaries of good and evil that were readily amplified during the Cold War. While the C.I.A. has always operated behind closed doors and in dark corners, governed by murky morality, it now does so behind the firewall of an ever-expanding surveillance state.

James Hawes’s adaptation of Littell’s novel, written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, is, like its predecessor, concerned with the inherently questionable ethics of an institution that has never, and will never, operate in daylight. “Nice office,” C.I.A. Director Moore (Holt McCallany) remarks to data analyst Charles Heller (Rami Malek) in the film, to which Heller cheekily responds that it is—if you don’t mind never having sunlight.

The Amateur is a relaxed and pleasurable throwback to...

"We've Filmed It a Couple of Different Ways": 'Outlander's Caitríona Balfe Doesn't Know How the Series Ends Even After Filming It [Exclusive]
Image
The final season of Outlander just got a colossal update from one of its leading stars. Outlander follows Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII nurse who goes back in time to Scotland in 1743. She meets the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and falls for him while also landing in the middle of an epic rebellion. Starz confirmed more than two years ago that Outlander would end with Season 8, and the final season even wrapped filming back in September 2024, but it’s still lacking an official premiere date. Caitríona Balfe recently sat down for a chat with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to talk about her upcoming action movie, The Amateur, and she teased an emotional season finale:

“Wrapping Outlander was very emotional. Everybody came to set, which was just very weird because they gave Sam [Heughan] and I a seven-page scene that was just full of dialogue to finish on,...

Daisy Ridley's 10 Best Roles Outside Star Wars
Image
Daisy Ridley is best known for playing Rey Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but she's also an acclaimed actor who's starred in a variety of great movies that weren't set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars movies have, for better or worse, defined Ridley's career. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was Ridley's big break in Hollywood, and she's now returning to the franchise in the upcoming movie New Jedi Order. Rey Skywalker is a major part of her acting career, but it's far from the only part of it.

Since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley has starred in 13 movies, video games, and even a Podcast series. Ridley's post-Rise of Skywalker career has been incredibly impressive, and she's managed to establish herself as much more than Rey in that time. Some of Daisy Ridley's best movies haven't even mentioned lightsabers or the Force,...

Chaos Walking was released in 2021 and was based on Patrick Ness's science fiction trilogy of the same name. The film adapted the series' first book, The Knife of Never Letting Go. Tom Holland starred as Todd Hewitt, a young man who lives in a world with no women where all creatures can hear each other's thoughts through a series of images, words and sounds called "noise". When Viola Eade (played by Daisy Ridley) crash lands on the all-male planet, Todd protects her from danger. Chaos Walking was an infamous box office flop for Lionsgate, making only $27.1 million despite the film's $100+ million budget.

The Amateur Trailer Teases A Tense Revenge Thriller As Meek CIA Man Rami Malek Goes Rogue
Image
Over the last few years, Oscar winner Rami Malek has developed quite the line in playing socially awkward, variously psychologically traumatised, somewhat eccentric geniuses who sit all across the moral spectrum. Mr. Robot's Elliot Alderson, No Time To Die's villainous Safin, Bohemian Rhapsody's Freddie Mercury... the list goes on. In The Amateur, Slow Horses alum and One Life director James Hawes' upcoming revenge thriller, Malek is CIA decoder Charlie Heller, a man whose life is turned violently upside down when his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) is killed in a terrorist attack. In the tense first trailer for the film, which boasts the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Caitriona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, and Michael Stuhlbarg among its starry ensemble, it very quickly becomes clear that Charlie is set to become a worthy addition to Malek's resumé of unorthodox mavericks. Check it out below:

Rami Malek is back in ‘Mr. Robot’ mode in ‘The Amateur’ trailer [Watch]
Image
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Rami Malek in a lead role. Since he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, his biggest roles have been as a Bond villain in “No Time to Die” Denzel Washington’s LAPD partner in crime thriller “The Little Things,” and a supporting role in “Oppenheimer’s” large ensemble. None of these movies were really what you’d call Rami Malek movies. “The Amateur,” which 20th Century released a trailer for on Wednesday, is a Rami Malek movie. The espionage thriller looks to take advantage of Malek’s unique characteristics in a way nothing else quite has since “Mr. Robot.”

Malek stars as an antihero on a revenge mission who uses CIA resources for his own purposes. Here’s the official logline from 20th Century: “Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for...

Rami Malek’s 20th Century Thriller ‘Amateur’ Among First Studio Shoots To Get Rolling In UK After Strikes
Image
Exclusive: After a grueling few months for UK film and TV producers, there are signs that the industry is starting to head back to work following twin actors and writers strikes in the U.S.

Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.

Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.

The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.

Amateur is directed by James Hawes, whose debut feature, the Anthony Hopkins vehicle One Life, has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season.

Is American Made Really Based on a True Story?
Image
Originally titled Mena, 2017's American Made stars Tom Cruise as a fictional version of the real Barry Seal, a previous Twa aviator who also conducted operations for the CIA, and who joined the Medellín Cartel as a drug runner in the 1980s. As a way to avoid jail time, Seal would become an informant for the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). The film, directed by Doug Liman and written by Gary Spinelli, also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Alejandro Edda, Mauricio Mejía, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jesse Plemons.

American Made grossed $134 million worldwide against a production budget of $50 million, and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Cruise's performance in particular. "This is yet another hyper-competent, boyishly devil-may-care character that offers Cruise, famous for his derring-do on set, a chance to do his own stunts and fly a plane; it's not a role all that far out of the aging megastar's wheelhouse,...

In The Mood For Some Tom Cruise And True Crime? Netflix Has You Covered
Image
Tom Cruise loves chucking himself out of planes, but did you know he can actually fly them? The "Mission: Impossible" star has been a qualified pilot since 1994 and owns several aeronautic vehicles, including a P-51 Mustang that popped up in "Top Gun: Maverick." As he once told Hello magazine (via The Netline), "All I ever wanted to be was a pilot or an actor," affirming that he very much shares Pete Mitchell's need for speed (which should come as a shock to literally no one on the planet). But it's not just the "Top Gun" movies; 2017's "American Made" likewise saw Cruise hopping into a cockpit for a real-life crime story that cements the adage, "Truth is stranger than fiction."

Cruise stars in "American Made" as Barry Seal, a wannabe hotshot pilot who's working a cushy yet, for him, soul-draining gig flying commercial jets for Twa in the '...
