The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne, will begin streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on July 17.

The 20th Century Studios spy thriller, which was released in theaters in April, stars Malek as Charlie Heller, “a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.”

In addition to Malek and Fishburne, the film stars Rachel Brosnahan as Heller’s wife along with Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani.

It has been a while since James Gunn took control of the Dcu, and his soft rebooted version of the respective super-verse seems to be unfolding pretty epically already. For one, his action series Creature Commandos fared perfectly well with fans and critics worldwide, and his upcoming project Lanterns is expected to follow suit.

But wait: Although it is not known yet if this forthcoming television series based on different Green Lantern characters from DC Comics will be good enough or not, Rami Malek’s The Amateur just might help with that, since it has been tamed by none other than the very director who is also involved with the DC show: James Hawes.

The movie comes two months after the spy thriller opened in theaters, where it has so far grossed just under $96 million worldwide. While there are some big-name action blockbusters still to come, 2025 has already been a notable year for action films. There have been a lot of long-awaited sequels, including Den of Thieves: Pantera, which came out seven years after the 2018 original. A similar sequel release happened with The Accountant 2, which came out at the end of April, nearly a decade after the first movie's 2016 release date. Chicago – “The Amateur” is a movie for grownups that never manages to stand out. It’s an ordinary, globe- trotting revenge thriller without much of any pizazz, like a Netflix-type movie perfect for folding laundry by, that somehow managed to get into theaters. Rami Malek in the title role is interesting … the story is not.

Malik stars is a low level CIA analyst named Charlie. a whiz with computers who can decode complicated computer systems in seemingly the blink of an eye, but isn’t much for field work or human interaction – outside his connection with his wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan). This all changes when she is killed during a hostage situation in London. In about the time it takes to order a donut, Malik has deciphered the identity of his wife’s killers and presented his treasure trove of digital evidence to his direct superiors, only to find them slow walking the investigation.

If someone like the Joker is going to flinch… you know it’s serious. Rami Malek didn’t just channel chaos in The Amateur; he practically borrowed a page from Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight playbook and lit it on fire.

There’s one intense scene where Malek’s icy stare and quiet menace scream “Gotham’s most wanted,” and well, it feels like Joker in a tailored suit.

Oscar winner Rami Malek is now a full-fledged producer of The Amateur, something he attributes to the cutting room floor of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

Malek had toiled away on a significant monologue only to be greeted with its absence upon finally seeing PTA’s 2012 drama. However, the disappointment incepted the idea of becoming a producer someday so that he could have a voice in the making of such decisions. Since then, he’s accumulated an Emmy via Mr. Robot, an Oscar by way of Bohemian Rhapsody, a notable role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and the honor of serving as the villain in the Broccoli family’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die.

Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake, while promoting his upcoming film, The Amateur, where he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer and vigilante, Malek addressed the possibility of a Mr. Robot reunion. "I don't think it'd be very different," he said of what the project would look like. "I just saw [series creator Sam Esmail] in London a week and a half ago. We had a typical British Sunday roast together. We're brothers. We will always be brothers and Christian [Slater] is here in New York on Broadway, so go check that out. We all keep up."

Currently, The Amateur is scored at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much higher audience score of 86%. The critics' score falls short of matching the score set by 2021's No Time to Die, the Bond film featuring Malek as the villain, which has scores of 83% and 88%. Even so, approaching 70% is a respectable score for The Amateur, which many critics had a great time watching.

"The Amateur doesn’t attempt to rewrite the book in terms of vigilante revenge stories, but it avoids the kind of slipshod errors that hobble most espionage fare," Eddie Harrison of film-authority.

The revenge thriller is among the most satisfying staples of cinema: generally, it features a hero with a very particular set of skills physically dominating anyone and everyone who gets in their way, en route to the ultimate catharsis of seeing wrongdoers get their comeuppance. That’s not the case in director James Hawes’ sophomore feature, The Amateur. Based on the novel by Robert Littell, our bad-guy-hunting hero isn’t a highly trained former assassin. He’s not even competent with a gun. Instead, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a desk-bound cryptographer, a “nerdy fella who works on computers”, as one character calls him. On paper, it’s an intriguing approach. But the execution is only semi-successful.

Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), the mad-as-hell secret-agent geek brainiac at the center of “The Amateur,” is a CIA analyst who works five floors underground at Langley, in the Decryption and Analysis department. There, he’s a master of all things coded and virtual, a surveillance hacker par excellence. Out of the office, he and his adoring business-person wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), reside in a renovated farmhouse and appear to have the perfect life. So when Sarah, on a corporate trip to London, gets taken hostage by a cadre of terrorists and is killed on the spot, it’s as if Charlie’s entire existence had been wiped away. Since the tragedy was an international incident, his bosses at the Agency assure him that the perpetrators will be hunted down. But that’s not enough for Charlie. It won’t sate his rage, his desire for vengeance. Instead, Charlie says, “I want to kill them himself.

Typecasting is a double-edged sword. On one hand, we’ve heard countless stories of idiosyncratic actors lamenting that what made them unique has been diluted by a nonstop series of cookie-cutter roles, giving them little, if any, opportunity to show any range. On the other hand, for some performers, it’s likely that without that typecasting, they may never find consistent work to begin with.

Not to say that Rami Malek should be thankful that the roles he receives seem to be contingent upon him recycling the same awkward veneer for which we all recognize him—the man did, after all, win an Oscar for a vaguely convincing, party-trick imitation of Freddie Mercury. Rather, in the case of “The Amateur,” it would be difficult to come to any conclusion aside from this role having been curated entirely for the actor’s fidgety sensibilities.

Rami Malek, talented as he obviously is, isn't exactly anyone's first choice for a CIA agent out on a quest for vengeance against the criminals who murdered his wife in cold blood. For that matter, neither would James Hawes land at the top of most filmmaker wish lists for a story like this, despite building up a solid career as a television director (most recently on "Slow Horses"). But if there's anything this quiet, unassuming, and minimalist thriller is mainly about, it's this: Appearances can be deceiving,...

Spy thrillers never have been out of vogue and generally rely on action stars to drive the usual scenarios in this well-worn genre, but The Amateur is an effective twist on the formula by plucking a rather nondescript CIA analyst and letting him turn the tables on the bad guys using his own smarts and non-physical skills.

It really becomes Jason Bourne for nerds and as such stands right up there with Bourne as one of the more exciting spy thrillers in many years — at least one that is different and emotional with a nice human touch to it. The fun of it all, in addition to the obvious international globetrotting to the likes of London, Paris, Marseilles and Istanbul, is watching Rami Malek’s Charlie Heller pull off the impossible against formidable terrorists in clever ways no one sees coming.

Today, terrorism definitions are significantly muddier than the binaries of good and evil that were readily amplified during the Cold War. While the C.I.A. has always operated behind closed doors and in dark corners, governed by murky morality, it now does so behind the firewall of an ever-expanding surveillance state.

Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.

Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.

The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.
