The 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced tonight on American Idol by Ryan Seacrest and 2022 inductee Lionel Richie.

A Tribe Called Quest, Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews Band, Kool & the Gang, Mary J. Blige, Peter Frampton, and Ozzy Osbourne were announced as the performers being inducted.

Jimmy Buffett is set to be recognized for his musical excellence. Other inductees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, MC5, Suzanne de Passe, and Big Mama Thornton.

Nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2024 included Cher, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade and A Tribe Called Quest.

The 2023 inductees included Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliot, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, and The Spinners.

Richie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022 alongside Pat Benatar (and Neil Giraldo), Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart), Carly Simon and Dolly Parton.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, established in 1983, is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. A committee nominates an artist, and “rock experts” evaluate the nominees and vote on the candidates who are inducted.

Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Sinead O’Connor, Cher, Sade, Mary J. Blige, Jane’s Addiction, and A Tribe Called Quest are among the nominees for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2024 class.

Other finalists include Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Lenny Kravitz.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

Of this year’s nominees, Oasis, Osbourne, Carey, O’Connor, Cher, Sade, Frampton, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Kravitz are on the ballot for the first time.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has named 15 acts spanning pop, hard rock, hip-hop and R&b as nominees for induction in its 2024 class.

The nominees for 2024 are Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, the late Sinéad O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade and A Tribe Called Quest. Honorees will be announced in April, with the annual induction ceremony set for the fall.

Ten of the 15 nominees — Carey, Cher, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Kravitz, Oasis, O’Connor, Osbourne and Sade — are on the ballot for the first time. Osbourne, it’s worth noting, has already been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, but he’s a first-time nominee as a solo artist.

Kate Bush will not be in attendance for her induction into the Rock of Roll Hall of Fame this evening (November 3rd).

In a statement released ahead of tonight’s ceremony, Bush said he was “completely blown away by this huge honour – an award that sits in the big beating heart of the American music industry.”

“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I never imagined I would be given this wonderful accolade,” Bush continued. “Last year was such a surprisingly successful time for my track ‘Running Up That Hill’ and I’m sure that a lot of you who’ve voted me in to the Rrhof also drove that track up the charts. Rage Against the Machine have responded to this morning’s news that they are among the inductees in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. The groundbreaking band cited “a surprising trajectory” while thanking their “passionate fans” and others for their inspiration over the years.

In addition to Rage Against the Machine, the 2023 class includes Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, George Michael, Sheryl Crow, and The Spinners. With other nominees like Iron Maiden and Soundgarden missing the cut, Ratm are essentially the lone “rock” act being inducted this year.

In acknowledging the honor, Ratm pointed out their long record of anti-establishment in their statement, which reads as follows:

“It is a surprising trajectory for us to be welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1991 four people in Los Angeles formed a musical group to stand where sound and and solidarity intersect. We called ourselves Rage Against the Machine.

When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened up in Cleveland in 1995 with a massive stadium concert featuring Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Lee Lewis, and countless other rock veterans, Sheryl Crow was one of the youngest artists on the bill. “It’s been an interesting journey for me since I played at that show,” Crow tells Rolling Stone. “My whole life has revolved around Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists. It’s crazy to be inducted on my own.”

Reacting to news in a statement to Rolling Stone, the UK singer said: “I have to admit I’m completely shocked at the news of being inducted into the Hall of Fame! It’s something I just never thought would happen. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. It means a great deal that you would think of me. It’s such a huge honor.”

Bush also seemed to suggest she plans to attend the induction ceremony by joking, “Now, as part of the initiation ceremony, I get to find out about the secret handshake… there is one, right?”

Bush has mostly remained out of the public eye since staging a concert residency in London in 2014. Her last album, 50 Words for Snow, was released in 2011.
