BBC Scoops ‘The Newsreader’ Season 2

Australian breakout drama The Newsreader is returning to the BBC in the UK after striking a deal with distributor eOne. The series, starring Anna Torv and Sam Reid follows a lives of pair of news presenters in the late 1980s, who are established as the ‘Golden Couple of News’ following season one, and crew of their News at Six program. However, with a new CEO taking charge of the show, Australia preparing to celebrate its bicentennial year and both anchors figuring out what they want from life, the truth about their success is more complex than it appears. The Michael Lucas-created show is for the ABC in Australia, and its second run will launch on BBC2 and BBC iPlayer in the UK in fall. Werner Film Productions makes the show in association with eOne.

Don't tailgate... or else!! Film Movement has released an official US trailer for a Dutch dark comedy dark thriller titled Tailgate, originally known as Bumperkleef in Dutch, which is probably an even better title than the English translation. A cocksure, road-raging family man finds himself pursued and terrorized by the vengeful van driver he chose to tailgate. Now they're in big trouble. "The van driver turns out to be the wrong man to cross on the road, and sets out to teach Hans a deadly lesson. Skillfully pushing the buttons of Hans's arrogance, a simple family road trip turns into a deadly obstacle course in this nerve-wracking, blackly comic morality tale thriller." Bumperkleef features Jeroen Spitzenberger, Anniek Pheifer, and Willem de Wolf. Between this and The Columnist, the Dutch seem to have a knack for mocking social situations in very dark and violent ways, while somehow making us laugh at the same time.

The film is being sold at AFM Online by Montreal-based Attraction.

Dutch road-rage thriller Tailgate has snagged a US buyer at the start of AFM Online.

The film is to be released in the States by Film Movement in a deal announced by Montreal-based sales outfit Attraction.

Scripted and directed by Lodewijk Crijns, Tailgate (aka Bumperkleef) was produced by Topkapi Films in the Netherlands in co-production with Belgian outfit Savage Film.

It was released locally in 2019 becoming a popular and critical success, with the Dutch film critics’ circle voting it Dutch film of the year.

Every now and then, a particularly ferocious type of thriller comes along that knocks everyone for six; even the most weathered horror fan struggles to play dumb. The sort of film that’s so densely drenched in dread that it leaves you jumping, barking, screaming along with the characters and begging for some level of respite, that you just know will likely never come. Mention a film in which a car driver falls foul of the driver of a larger vehicle, who won't stop pursuing him, and most people will immediately think of Stephen Spielberg's Duel. This film, however, really could not be more different. It's set on the busy roads of the Netherlands, where other vehicles are rarely out of sight. The car driver has his wife and children with him and the dispute is, at least to an extent, clearly the car driver's fault.

That driver is Hans (Jeroen Spitzenberger), already in a bad mood when his journey begins because his daughters have taken ages to get organised, his wife keeps asking for a few more minutes and he doesn't want to think about how annoyed his mum will be with him if they're late. It shouldn't be a very long drive but with traffic, you never can tell. Whenever gaps open up.

CANNES -- Miramax Films executive vp acquisitions and co-productions Agnes Mentre said Monday that the mini-major had sealed a deal to acquire North American rights to Dutch Helmer Ben Sombogaart's epic feature "Twin Sisters" (De Tweeling). The film is based on the novel "Twins" by Tessa De Loo and tells the story of German twin sisters who are separated with one being raised in Holland and the other remaining in rural Germany. The sisters' lives take very different turns until they meet again 40 years after World War II. "Twins" was a bestseller in Holland and Germany with more than 3.5 million readers. De Loo's book was originally published in the Netherlands in 1993 and is the author's first to have been translated into English. "Twin Sisters" was written for the big screen by Marieke van der Pol and stars Thekla Reuten, Nadja Uhl, Ellen Vogel, Gudrun Okras, Jeroen Spitzenberger, and Roman Knizka.
