If you’re not watching Resident Alien for the emotional trauma disguised as comedy, then I don’t know what you’re doing with your life.
Resident Alien Season 4 Episode 3, “Ties That Bind,” took us back to the 1970s, gave us lobsters, time portals, Starsky & Hutch cosplay, and enough emotional breakthroughs to power a therapist’s conference.

Harry and D’arcy are off on a time-travel mission to retrieve alien tech Harry accidentally dropped in 1970 — a device powerful enough to restore his alien energy but dangerous enough to wipe out his entire species if handed over to the Grays. No pressure!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Fireflyfans: prepare to be incredibly upset by the crossover that never happened. Although we can’t quite picture it now, the cancellation of the latter after just one season robbed us of what we’d lovingly dub vampires in space. According to a TikTok post (via ScreenRant), James Marsters’ bleach-blonde vampire, Spike, was teeing up for a cameo in the space epic that hailed from Buffy’s creator, Joss Whedon. Revealing what the hopeful scene would have looked like, the Buffy alum said,
“The plan was to put Spike in Firefly, which was another one of Joss’ shows about space. So he took me over and introduced me to the cast of Serenity, Firefly. I wish they would have just called it the same thing. Crazy. Um, uh… and I looked at all the space stuff and thought it was cool. He introduced me to...

Being human can feel pretty alienating sometimes. Humans are weird creatures and the rules of our societies can feel baffling, but there's a great TV series that approaches that theme through the eyes of an actual extraterrestrial. The SyFy original series "Resident Alien," which stars Alan Tudyk as an alien with a truly unpronounceable name that goes by the assumed name and identity of "Harry Vanderspeigle," shows us just how bizarre humans are by depicting life for an alien who's now stuck among us and doing his best to fit in. "Resident Alien" isn't the first movie or series to poke fun at humanity through the eyes of a space alien, with movies like the hilarious Nick Frost and Simon Pegg-starring "Paul" and even the Jeff Goldblum rom-com "Earth Girls are Easy" playing with the concept, but it does take it to its furthest and most ridiculous conclusions.

The love for Firefly isn’t dying any time soon, and Nathan Fillion would like to keep it that way. While the series wasn’t allowed the luxury to run more than a single season at Fox, Fillion might be satisfied with his run as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in that one season. The Rookie star wasn’t so eager to jump on the ‘bring back Firefly’ wagon, because he believed it was enough.
Fillion’s take shouldn’t be overlooked, as Firefly probably dodged a bullet when it ended with a single season. It didn’t have to face the fan complaints of a boring or forced second or future seasons. The series probably avoided the fate of USA Network’s Mr. Robot, which had a great beginning that was ruined by a below-average second season.

Fans can finally rest easy knowing the fourth season of Alan Tudyk's sci-fi dramedy, Resident Alien, is returning. The show faced a grim future after Season 3, but its fate changed. Syfy has set the return date for June 6. The new season also sees a slight release change. New episodes will be simulcast on two NBCUniversal networks, with USA Network joining Syfy to get the show in front of viewers. This was one of the compromises made to ensure the show returns for another season, apart from the budget cuts that were instituted. Apart from the live airing, new episodes will be available to stream on Peacock a week after their on-air debut. The season's trailer has also been released, previewing the events where Patience faces a new threat while Harry finds himself in captivity. The official synopsis for the season reads:

Almost a year after Resident Alien moved from Syfy to NBCUniversal sibling USA Network with a suspenseful Season 4 renewal, a premiere date has been set for said Season 4 and, surprisingly, it involves both the sci-fi comedy-drama’ new and old homes.
The new season of Resident Alien will debut June 6 as a simulcast on USA and Syfy. The decision to keep the show on Syfy in addition to its USA run reportedly came in the months following the Season 4 renewal. Also today, Syfy announced a June 12 premiere for its new scripted series Revival, headlined by Wynonna Earp star Melanie Scrofano. Episodes of Resident Alien and Revival — both based on comics — will be available on Peacock a week after they premiere on the linear networks.

It’s Sad But True: ‘Firefly’ Revival Really Doesn’t Need Nathan Fillion Anymore and That Makes Sense
Fox canceled Nathan Fillion’s Firefly after airing eleven out of its fourteen produced episodes. On paper, Fox couldn’t justify the huge budget of the show with its below-average ratings. Without giving it another chance, Fox decided to pull the plug by airing another hit pilot, Fastlane. However, it didn’t take much longer for fans to figure out that Fox had made a huge mistake.
Fans have been hoping for a revival series since its cancellation. The series got a film continuation, Serenity, which was released 20 years ago in 2005. After all these years, it is high time that we think about a revival without Fillion as the lead. A comic book has already suggested the perfect way that we can replace Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds with a new captain for Serenity.

Sometimes we can't help but wonder what television channels or streaming services were thinking when canceling a TV show. Viewership and cost are the usual suspects behind why a fan favorite TV show doesn't last as long as it should, but that doesn't mean it was a failure.
We're taking a look back at seven science fiction and fantasy shows that we cancelled way too soon, beginning with a show that everyone can agree on:
Firefly
Fans young and old can agree that Firefly was cancelled too soon, after only one season. Created by Joss Whedon and starring Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass, this legendary science fiction show from 2002 has one of the most powerful fan bases on the planet.
Love, action, and humor abound aboard the spaceship Serenity, where our wacky band of space-faring outlaws lived and worked together.

Nathan Fillion’s Firefly had a cancellation in the cards long before the actual news came. The ratings were low despite the fans, who got to see it, loving the space Western. These fans saw the possibility of Fox axing the show and started a campaign to save the show. It was just a sign of what was to come after Fox cancelled the series.
The network didn’t wait to air all of its episodes, instead cancelling the series after airing just eleven out of fourteen produced episodes. Fox immediately replaced it with another crime action series, Fastlane. However, fans soon proved that Fox made a huge mistake.
Once the completed version of Firefly began rebroadcasting, fans flocked in to watch the show. They saw that Joss Whedon had a vision that was unlike anything on TV at the time. The fanbase only grew in number and called themselves the Browncoats.

Nathan Fillion’s Firefly broke many hearts when its cancellation was announced. The cast of the Fox series still had a week of filming left to get through, and it wasn’t easy for them to pretend that everything was okay. However, they were a tight group of talented actors who set aside their emotions to complete the shoot of the series.
While the cast knew they were lagging on the ratings chart, the cancellation still came as a shock to many. Fox didn’t want to give the series another chance, as they already had another action crime drama waiting to take its place. Sadly, McG’s Fastlane too faced a similar fate and was cancelled after one season.

HBO's "The Last of Us" is back, and the show's second season (read /Film's review) not only brings a time jump but also a whole host of new characters along with it. The best of the bunch so far is undeniably Dina (Isabela Merced), Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) best friend and partner in crime at the Jackson, Wyoming settlement she and Joel (Pedro Pascal) now call home. Other new Jackson residents include the young community leader Jesse (Young Manzino) and the sharp-edged therapist Gail (Catherine O'Hara).
Interestingly, though, season 2 doesn't open with a spotlight on its heroes. Instead, the season premiere focuses heavily on a pack of young people who feel they've been wronged by Joel and are out for blood. Among them? Kaitlyn Dever's Abby, Tati Gabrielle's Nora, Ariela Barer's Mel, Danny Ramirez's Manny, and Owen (more on the actor who plays him momentarily). The latter...

When a beloved TV show is canceled after just one season, it's a disappointing outcome. While every TV series risks cancelation no matter what, it always comes as a shock when a genuinely good show is struck down before it has the chance to establish itself. From overlooked crime TV shows that only lasted one season to short-lived comedies, no TV genre is safe from the dreaded cancelation after just one outing. For many of these series, as time has progressed, critical and audience reception has further proved they should've gone on for longer.
All of these TV shows were canceled too soon for a variety of reasons, but most of the reasoning comes down to numbers. Whether they were too expensive to produce or didn't garner enough viewership, the networks and streamers behind these shows determined that the risk of production wasn't worth the reward. Quick Links What is Nickelodeon's Space Cases? How Space Cases Was Ahead of its Time Why Nickelodeon's Space Cases Deserves Better
Long before Star Wars: Skeleton Crew launched on Disney+, Nickelodeon brought audiences a now-forgotten sci-fi series in the '90s. Today, it is easy to take for granted sci-fi shows with high production values and popular intellectual properties attached as streaming platforms compete to attract subscribers with stories set in established universes. Yet, as viewers flock to shows like Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Dune: Prophecy, and The Penguin, it is a reminder of how many incredible series are left behind, overshadowed by bigger names or fading from memory entirely. Nickelodeon's Space Cases had everything these new series offer, except the advantage of a recognizable legacy. Nearly 30 years later, Space Cases still feels like a "long strange trip" worth revisiting, a hidden gem in need of love before it disappears into the void forever.

Nickelodeon's Space Cases had everything these new series offer, except the advantage of a recognizable legacy. Nearly 30 years later, Space Cases still feels like a "long strange trip" worth revisiting, a hidden gem in need of love before it disappears into the void forever.

The gone-too-soon category of television series will always have Firefly at its top. The show was canceled after just one season at Fox. Even before the network announced its cancelation, fans saw the possibility of Fox axing the show and started a campaign against it. The campaign was not only unsuccessful in stopping the cancelation, but it also failed to secure the show’s revival.

No one in the Firefly team was to be blamed for the low ratings and subsequent cancelation. Fox ruined the show by sticking its fingers in the creative process even before the Nathan Fillion show took off. In the years that followed, Firefly has gained cult following for its brilliant premise and world-building.

Firefly would be more successful on a streaming platform like Netflix or Apple TV+ now says Serenity's composer. Firefly developed a cult status after only 11 out of 14 episodes aired and popularity grew with home video release. After Disney acquired Firefly, fans are hopeful for a revival on Disney+ despite challenges for a second season.
Firefly was a series that never seemed to reach its potential, and this is something that the composer who worked on the 2005 spin-off film Serenity believes would have been very different if the series was released now on a streaming platform. David Newman, who worked on the equally ill-fated movie based on the character of the Joss Whedon series, is pretty confident that the current cult status of the sci-fi series would have grown considerably with the power of Netflix or Apple TV+ behind it.
