What Do We Know About the upcoming Dcu original series Lanterns? More thank you may think. The HBO series will be the first live-action project on television from James Gunn’s rebooted DC cinematic universe. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in and discuss Lanterns.
We will see multiple Green Lanterns
While we met several members of the Green Lantern Corps in the Ryan Reynolds-led feature film, this new series is intentionally plural, as we will meet more than just Hal Jordan. According to James Gunn, Lanterns will center on Jon Stewart, who briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in a non-speaking role. We also know that James Gunn’s longtime friend and collaborator Nathan Fillion is portraying Lanterns hero Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie and will potentially appear.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios productions are going along smoothly. Besides Superman's presence at CinemaCon this week, which is in the editing process, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently filming, as it's also set to meet its June 2026 release date. Besides the feature films, the DC Universe is also steadily growing on the television front, with Peacemaker Season 2 in post-production and Creature Commandos Season 2 greenlit. However, one of the most exciting projects that just started filming is Lanterns, the HBO series centered around two Green Lanterns investigating a murder mystery on Earth. New set photos for the series have dropped, showing one of the stars in a precarious situation.
The DC Film news account on X posted photos taken by Ed Stanton, depicting Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart in the middle of an action sequence. Interestingly, rather than being in a Green Lantern uniform, the...

Lanterns is currently shooting in Atlanta, and while we've already had a first official look at the Dcu's Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the latter - portrayed by actor Aaron Pierre - has now been spotted on set.
Once again, his superhero costume is nowhere to be found. We can't even see John's Green Lantern Corps Power Ring, and his carrying a gun into battle suggests he might not have it for some reason.
Fans have wondered how Lanterns will portray these heroes, particularly on a television budget. HBO doesn't shy away from investing heavily in its offerings, but several episodes of CG-heavy Green Lantern action would soon add up; depowering Hal and John for a while might help.
While Lanterns has been described as a grounded story, Superman star, Nathan Fillion, has been confirmed to return as Guy Gardner.

When I say this, I say it on behalf of everyone: this year passed by like a blur. But what saved us from the turmoil of ‘life’ are great movies and TV shows that came out in 2024.
This year saw many high-profile and fan-favorite TV shows, including Silo, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and more. However, amid the Ott crowd, we might have missed out on some great TV shows ranging from sitcoms, and action-packed mystery thrillers to sci-fi series.
A snippet from Silo | Credits: Apple TV+
As Ott platforms are becoming our go-to option for streaming shows or movies and we can see a dip in cable subscriptions, it’s getting easier to lose track of all the shows released every year. 2024 gave many shows that deserved much more love and attention. When Bryce Dessner got a call asking to score the music for “Manhunt,” Apple TV+’s thrilling limited series about the search for John Wilkes Booth after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, it was an easy “yes” for him.
Not only did he and his brother Aaron grow up in West Virginia, they’ve also named the National songs after Civil War battlefields.
Early in the process, showrunner and creator Monica Beletsky sought Dessner out and, together, they explored ideas for how the music would sound. The seven-part limited series follows Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies), Lincoln’s close confidant and secretary of war, who goes on a mission to track down Booth (Anthony Boyle) after he kills Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The score needed to have edge and grit and gloom, so Dessner crafted a “dark twisted American folk music” sound.

“Something that we were all really drawn to is the ornamentation of the Victorian era,” explains “Manhunt” production designer Chloe Arbiture about taking a bolder approach to designing over 200 sets for what a well-known period in history: the aftermath of the assassination of the 16th U.S. President. “We wanted modern audiences to relate to it and to feel like there was a stake in it,” she explains about her team’s focus on ornamentation, decoration and detail. “When we look through; I mean even I’m guilty of it, but when I look through black and white photographs, I don’t really feel like this big human connection to things. But we all talked about how what makes the story human is color, is richness, is detail, and that’s something that really drove us through the entire creative process from the beginning to the end.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

After Manhunt episode 6 saw Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's desperate pursuit of John Wilkes Booth come to an end, the show's focus shifted to the conspirators who supported Booth, both on the night of the assassination and the months leading up to it. Manhunt creator Monica Beletsky blended fact and fiction in the show's depiction of the trial covering Stanton's charges of a grand conspiracy. As was the case for the entire show, the narrative departed from reality in a few places to put emphasis on particular characters and elevate the drama.

Edwin Stanton's ending in the Manhunt finale nearly went much longer. Creator Monica Beletsky reveals she wrote scenes for Stanton after barricading himself in his office, though found the ultimate ending to be "really powerful". This decision stayed true to the show's exploration of Stanton's efforts to stay true to Lincoln's legacy after his assassination, avoiding taking the focus away from the late President by exploring Stanton's later health and financial struggles.
With his efforts to bring those involved in Abraham Lincoln's assassination to justice at an end, Manhunt creator Monica Beletsky reveals how Edwin Stanton's ending was different in the show. The finale of the Apple TV+ historical miniseries saw Lincoln's Secretary of War strive to link Andrew Johnson to Lincoln's murder with a grand conspiracy trial, only being successful in getting a guilty verdict for John Wilkes Booth's direct conspirators.

In the ninth and final episode of Apple TV+'s Manhunt, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton realizes that the new president, Andrew Johnson, wants to remove him, and as a result, Stanton barricades himself in his office for three months in order to keep his job, an extraordinary feat that actually happened in real life. Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's Vice President, Andrew Johnson took up the mantel as president. However, his ideals did not quite meld with those of Edwin Stanton, or Lincoln, and as a result conflicts like the barricade occurred.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers for the finale of “Manhunt,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
The seven-episode historical miniseries “Manhunt” has come to a dramatic close. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) brought several of John Wilkes Booth’s conspirators to trial over Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, resulting in numerous hangings. Legally, he wasn’t able to thread the needle to prove a grand conspiracy, leaving him somewhat unsatisfied in his efforts to find justice for Lincoln. Yet Stanton has his next fight almost immediately after the verdict, as incoming President Andrew Johnson aims to have him removed from his position — leading the secretary of war to barricade himself in his office in protest.
Reflecting on the series — and especially the trial that takes up the majority of the final episode — Menzies speaks to how his animated facial expressions guide the audience through the highs and lows of prosecuting Lincoln’s assassins.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Manhunt series finale.] The Manhunt series finale depicts one of war secretary Edwin Stanton’s most famous acts. The politician barricaded himself in his office for three months in protest of President Andrew Johnson’s attempt to remove him from office. Johnson became the first American president to be impeached because of this move; just one vote saved him from complete removal. The impeachment took place while Stanton was still a shut-in that office. Barricading himself in the room was the final scene Tobias Menzies filmed for the Apple TV+ limited series, which debuted its finale on Friday, April 19. The Emmy winner tells TV Insider that it was a perfect way to wrap this political dogfight of a tale that tells “such a strange bit of history.” “Those moments, for me, really transport you back to a different time because it feels so analog,” Menzies shares. The grand conspiracy case failed due to unreliable witness testimony casting doubt on the evidence provided by Stanton. Missing pages from John Wilkes Booth's diary were burned by Stanton, leading to conspiracy theories about his potential involvement in the assassination. Mannhunt was really about the long-term effects of Booth's murder of Lincoln, particularly regarding Reconstruction.
The series finale of Manhunt saw Secretary of War Edwin Stanton attempt to bring justice to all those involved with John Wilkes Booth's assassination of Abraham Lincoln, with varying degrees of success. Manhunt episode 7 largely focused on the trial that began less than a month after Lincoln's death, during which Stanton brought charges of grand conspiracy against the last remnants of the Confederacy. While the testimony of brave individuals like Mary Simms and her brother Milo brought the conspiracy into focus, less reliable testimonials cast enough doubt on the evidence for the grand conspiracy to be declared inconclusive.

John Wilkes Booth was the worst. Even if he hadn’t assassinated Abraham Lincoln and ruined some of Reconstruction’s more powerful measures for integrating freed Black people into American social and political life, Booth was still a vain, violent, callow, self-aggrandizing bigot.
Anthony Boyle, who plays Booth in the gripping, bracing Apple TV+ limited series Manhunt, invests his performance with all of these facets of Booth’s personality, while never making him a caricature, and crucially, never allowing him to appear as an all-too-seductive antihero. Instead, drawing on the “self-delusion and grandeur and pure, pure narcissism” he found in Booth’s letters, Boyle shows what made the man such a riveting actor and wily foe, turning on a dime repeatedly in nearly every scene to calibrate his real-time performance as himself to get his way in his attempts to evade capture by the Union, directed by War Secretary Edwin Stanton...

Apple TV+’s historical drama Manhunt takes place after Lincoln’s assassination. The story revolves around Edwin Stanton, the US Secretary of War and one of the two main characters. During one of the most grueling periods in American history, Stanton took it upon himself to assist Lincoln in creating a nation that was free to all people. Whether the real Edwin Stanton truly was as righteous as shown in this Apple TV+ series would be up for debate, but Tobias Menzies’ portrayal of Stanton has won my heart. Through his own journey, this fictional Stanton makes the audience acknowledge the ideas and struggles of the Black folks that he stood for. For centuries, White folks had enslaved and oppressed people of color, but for men like Lincoln and Stanton to appropriately use their privilege to put an end to this cycle of violence and oppression was a display of valor and humility.

Mary Simms’ story is a testament to Black oppression. During the trying times when Black people were considered the property of White men, Mary Simms was one of the many forgotten names who stood up to the atrocities of White entitlement. Even though Apple TV+’s historical drama Manhunt follows the detailed narratives of Edwin Stanton and John Wilkes Booth, it also sheds light on other characters like Mary Simms. It was probably one of the most harrowing periods in American history that shaped the future of the country. It might even be one of the few wars that the country actually fought for righteous reasons (scoffs). If it weren’t for Lincoln, it would’ve taken another century for the US to abolish slavery and free the Black people. But again, in my very honest opinion, in the present day, the American Civil War might just have become a tool.

The Apple TV+ seven-part limited series Manhunt explores the aftermath of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater) and the hunt to find John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle). Told through the eyes of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies), a little-known figure in American history, the story unfolds as a personal and political tale of what can happen when people feel threatened by change. One of the things that’s so interesting about this series is that, even though you think you know the story of this famous presidential assassination, you’ll discover that there were so many layers that you hadn’t realized, from the conspiracy that set things in motion, to the cat-and-mouse game to capture Booth, to the Black American woman that played an important role in the trial that brought it all to light.

Booth's capture in a burning barn is historically accurate, but Manhunt takes creative liberties with what happened to his body. In reality, Booth's body was returned to his family for burial, while Manhunt shows Edwin Stanton disposing of it in a body of water. Manhunt's portrayal likely reflects Stanton's revengeful wishes, deviating from actual history for dramatic effect.
In the sixth episode of Manhunt, John Wilkes Booth and his accomplice are surrounded by Union soldiers, and Booth faces his ultimate fate, but as it turns out, the television series took creative liberties when it came to what happened to Booth after his death. In Manhunt episode 6, Booth's death is depicted accurately, but with added drama for effect. The portrayal of Stanton's involvement in the Booth investigation is exaggerated for the show. Booth's final moments and interactions with Julia Garrett are fictionalized for a more emotional impact.
Manhunt episode 6 saw the dramatic conclusion of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's fervent pursuit of John Wilkes Booth, and in a few instances historical accuracy was eschewed in favor of a more captivating narrative. After limiting Booth's screen time in the previous two episodes, Manhunt episode 6 went into great detail about the final confrontation between Booth and Union soldiers at the Garrett farm, which led to Booth's death. While the larger story points stick to the truth, creator Monica Beletsky changed some details or provided context that may or may not be accurate in service of the drama.
Manhunt episode 6 stuck to the formula laid out by the previous episodes.

Historical facts are occasionally abandoned for a more engaging narrative in Manhunt episode 5. Booth's interactions in the show are largely fabricated, as there are no witnesses to his journey after Lincoln's assassination. The portrayal of Andrew Johnson's meddling in the show differs from the severity of his real-life actions.
Manhunt episode 5 saw many of the primary characters involved in the hunt and capture of John Wilkes Booth moving into position for the end of the chase, and in doing so, historical facts were occasionally abandoned in favor of a more engaging and exciting narrative. While episode 4 focused on the conspiracy behind the assassination, Manhunt episode 5 featured a new villain in the form of President Andrew Johnson and his plans for Reconstruction. The Apple TV+ drama stuck fairly close to the truth regarding the final stages of the hunt for Booth, although there were some slight inconsistencies.

In the previous episode of Manhunt, Stanton had been researching the spy lines that the Confederacy Secret Services took. He believed that Booth and his accomplice, Herold, took this road for a safe passage to Richmond, Virginia. In search of answers, Stanton comes across Sanders, whom he had suspicions about being a Confederate sympathizer. It turns out Sanders was indeed one, as he had also been responsible for funding the Manhattan fire plot. Being a millionaire, he benefits the people in power, which is why it wasn’t easy to arrest him.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed President Johnson promises Stanton that he’ll bring the Confederate collaborators to justice but then pardons them to win their support for his own interests. Manhunt episode 4 accelerates towards the climax, diverging from facts to explore historical conspiracies in the Civil War. Edwin Stanton's alleged role in ordering Jefferson Davis' assassination is a scandalous plot point in the episode. Characterizations like Sanders and Baker are exaggerated for dramatic effect, fostering an intense but fictional confrontation.
Compared to previous episodes, Manhunt episode 4 moves through its primary plot points at breakneck speed, as Edwin Stanton's hunt for John Wilkes Booth hurtles towards its endgame. The episode also departs almost entirely from the true story of John Wilkes Booth in favor of exploring some of the historical conspiracies on both sides of the American Civil War, even if there is no concrete proof about the players involved. All the major notes in Manhunt episode 4 are based on real world events, but as has been the case throughout each episode, liberties are taken to accentuate the intrigue.

Boston Corbett shot Booth in a Virginia farmhouse (he died hours later). The assassination and the pursuit are now the subjects of Manhunt, a brisk new limited series on Apple TV+.
