Scream Factory‘s October home video line-up includes 4K editions of End of Days, Black Sunday, and Nosferatu the Vampyre.

End of Days will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on October 7.

The 1999 action-horror film is directed by Peter Hyams (Timecop) and written by Andrew W. Marlowe (Hollow Man).

It is almost unfair to ask if anything is as good as The Twilight Zone. Its surprising just how many cult-favorite horror movies were significantly influenced by earlier films and, when it really comes down to it, were totally unoriginal. While this may seem like a point of criticism, paying homage to horror movies of the past or filmmakers wearing their influences on their sleeve was never a bad thing, and just because a movie was derivative does not mean its bad. I, like many women of my age, spent a formative part of my youth enamored with the idea of witches. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t quite my bag, I adored Charmed. My VHS copy of Practical Magic got more play than a yo-yo. And, of course, I was an avid viewer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Contagion 4K Uhd from Warner Bros.

Contagion will infect 4K Ultra HD on February 27 via Warner Bros. The 2011 thriller has been newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative, overseen by director Steven Soderbergh, with High Dynamic Range.

The ensemble cast features Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, and Sanaa Lathan. Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) wrote the script.

Three previously released featurettes are included: “The Reality of Contagion,” “The Contagion Detectives,” and “Contagion: How a Virus Changes the World.”

Body Double Vinyl Soundtrack from Waxwork Records

The soundtrack from Brain De Palma’s Body Double is coming to vinyl for $40 from Waxwork Records.

Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.

Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.

In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.

Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.

Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has left an impression on viewers. With its acerbic (and maybe muddled) allegory about social and economic class in the UK, the movie is a big twisty swing from the writer-director of Promising Young Woman. It also features star Barry Keoghan going there. In some scenes, there constitutes prancing around a luxurious manor in his birthday suit, galloping as free and liberated as a baby elephant charging a watering hole.

In others, there consists of the literal water (and other fluids therein) pooling around the hole of a bathtub. You know the scene: After Felix (Jacob Elordi), the wealthy patron and object of obsession for Keoghan’s Oliver Quick, is spied pleasuring himself in the bath, Ollie sneaks in afterward to slurp up the remainder that didn’t go down the drain. One of my moments of dread is the threat of random violence. The moment in the original Terminator when the machine shows up at people’s homes, knocks on their door and asks if they are Sarah Connor then promptly shoots them when they answer yes is still chilling. Drawing inspiration for me from the classically brutal Martyrs (2008) and the odd cheapy eye transplant film Mansion Of The Doomed (1976) is this lovely gripping Italian horror thriller The Goldsmith (aka L’orafo) (2022)

The film opens on a chase scene in broad daylight over urban dirt fields, three children who turn out to be younger versions of the people in the film are fleeing from an older man. Arianna (Valentina Carbone), Stefano (Matthias Cavallo) and Roberto (Federico Graziani). During the chase, the girl drops a gold cross. The old man catches up to them and reaches down for the cross. The male children charge to stop him.

By definition, a "Scream Queen" is an actress known for her numerous and notable appearances in horror films. Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis received this title, mainly due to her work in the Halloween franchise. In the 1960s, Barbara Steele was The Queen, thanks to her roles in gothic horror movies, while other actresses gained the title after just one film. For example, Janet Leigh, Curtis' mother, earned the title primarily because of one memorable scene in Psycho. More recently Essie Davis was fantastic in The Babadook and Keke Palmer's performance in Nope was phenomenal - though these were one-off roles.

You can’t argue with disc collectors eager to rediscover movies they loved at age 10, in terrific kiddie matinees. Cowboy star Rory Calhoun makes a perfectly fine Italian vagabond ladies’ man for this very un-serious ‘oriental’ adventure, and Yôko Tani is the requisite princess who needs kissing lessons. Tim Lucas’s welcome, info-packed commentary satisfies our curiosity about the long-unavailable title — it’s different than the A.I.P. release we (barely) remember.

Barbara Steele has one of her better performance showcases in Camillo Mastrocinque’s classy ghost story with a somewhat dispiriting twist. Steele’s fan-collectors won’t need extra encouragement, as she’s in most every scene and gets to play a variety of moods from delicate to seductive to outright poisonous. Quality performances flatter a flawed screenplay, and the fine direction and attentive cinematography clearly inspired Steele to give it everything she had. Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. Today in 1978, Joe Dante's Piranha was released in the states. Today in 2021, it remains an understated, low-budget mild masterpiece of a creature feature.

A film like Piranha always lies somewhere between getting a bad wrap and not receiving adequate love. Admittedly it runs roughly on the Jaws plot formula - a quaint resort town is met with aquatic monster disaster on the weekend of the town's biggest event, which could have been preventable if those in power prioritized their people's safety over money. However, Piranha isn't a ripoff of Jaws- at its most uninspired it's a clever homage, even featuring a scene with Jaws memorabilia like a watch and pinball machine.

We regret to report that actor John Richardson has passed away this week, just two weeks before what would have been his 87th birthday.

John found fame in the 1960s via films such as Mario Bava's Black Sunday and Hammer Film's remakes of She and One Million Years B.C., wherein he co-starred alongside many of the most beautiful actresses of the era, such as Ursula Andress, Barbara Steele and Raquel Welch who famously bemoaned, on first being introduced to John, that her new leading man was more beautiful than she was!

John's role in One Million Years B.C. (1966), Ray Harryhausen's prehistoric animated cult classic, led to a long relationship with his co-star Martine Beswick and a move to Hollywood, where he landed roles in big budget Hollywood productions such as Vincente Minnelli's On A Clear Day You...

I’m a sucker for black and white horror films and thrillers. Hold That Ghost! (1941) and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) are the closest I ever got to an actual horror film when I was a child. The latter actually frightened me and gave me more than a handful of nightmares while in kindergarten. As I got older, I thrilled to the suspense-filled Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Wise’s The Haunting (1963), and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) on network television viewings. I picked up a VHS copy of John Llewelyn Moxey’s masterful The City of the Dead under the insipid title of Horror Hotel and discovered a classic that I love to this day. There is an overall spookiness that I associate with black and white that I wish contemporary horror film directors would go back to.
