Look, I know I called Orca a Jaws ripoff and that’s a tad derogatory. I didn’t mean to make it a pejorative, but that’s in essence what nearly every animal attack movie is post Jaws isn’t it? Well yes and no. One of my favorite YouTube channels is Movie Dumpster, and they recently covered The Dunwich Horror. They went into the difference between a cash-in and a ripoff. Go watch their videos as it’s always great stuff but anyway, they are right. Orca isn’t a ripoff necessarily even if it was designed to go after Jaws‘ popularity and box office. Cruel Jaws out of Italy is 100% a ripoff but Orca, and today’s movie Piranha, are much more cash-ins where it doesn’t have to be the same animal at all or even the same story but the advertising and makes audiences want to...

Severin Film's Restoration of Lo Spettro/The Ghost Receives Prestigious Film Festival Selections: "In one of the most prestigious events in company history, Severin Films proudly announces that their restoration of Riccardo Freda’s landmark 1963 horror thriller Lo Spettro/The Ghost starring Barbara Steele has been selected to premiere in the Venice Classics section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in September and open for the Seven Chances section of the 58th Sitges Film Festival in October.
Hailed as “Riccardo Freda’s masterpiece” (At the Mansion of Madness), Lo Spettro/The Ghost resets the bar for Italian horror history with a screenplay by Freda and Oreste Biancoli (Bicycle Thieves), and featuring a career-best performance by the supernaturally beautiful Steele. But after 50-plus years of tattered prints and murky transfers, Severin’s global sleuths finally located the thought-lost original camera negative in a storage facility near Cinecittà, only to...

A morbid curiosity lingers throughout Abraham’s Boys, the new horror drama from director Natasha Kermani and writer Joe Hill. It takes the same foundational impulse behind the recent wave of low-effort childhood character reinventions—think public domain exploitation with no budget or vision—but filters it through a prestige lens and genuine creative ambition. Instead of nostalgia bait, it turns to one of horror’s most enduring literary texts, mining Bram Stoker’s gothic classic Dracula for something deeply intimate and unsettling. Hitting theaters this month via IFC and Shudder, the film is a deliberate and unnerving exhumation of legacy and monsters, both real and remembered. Sun-drenched and slow-burning, Kermani’s latest feature reimagines the Dracula mythos with striking originality.
Based on the short story by Joe Hill, Abraham’s Boys picks up years after the events of Dracula, centering on the sons of Abraham Van Helsing: Max (Brady Hepner) and Rudy (Judah Macley). Their father,...

Sharp and tall, the blades of grass sway gently in an unseen breeze. Amongst the shifting greens is a small boy. His serenity is palpable, bolstered by the tranquility of the natural world around him, and otherwise unswayed by external factors.
His sojourn is interrupted, however, when his mother swoops the boy into her loving and protective arms. In short order, the calming meadow is revealed to be an overgrown yard resting beside a decaying homestead, itself housed within a swiftly disintegrating Detroit community. Abandoned buildings reflect the ghostly aura of a once livable and thriving locale while unchecked fires ravage and opportunistic evils mature. People who are able are getting out, leaving those who remain cemented to the deteriorating country abandoned by the world outside.

While many streaming services are shrinking their once vast catalogs of classic films in favor of chasing original content, Tubi is becoming an increasingly attractive option. Although it's a free service, it has a surprisingly well-rounded collection of older films, especially in the horror department. While you may not always be able to find the most recent horror films fresh from their theatrical run (although they do have some newer movies), they have a well-curated selection of offerings that run across several different subgenres.
It doesn't matter whether you're a fan of zombie films, Italian giallo, slashers, or goofy 1980s horror comedies -- Tubi has you covered. And whether you're a horror movie amateur looking to catch up on some classics or a long-standing fan of the genre hoping to find something a little more obscure, there's plenty to catch your eye here. The Horrible Dr. Hichcock, directed by Riccardo Freda under the pseudonym “Robert Hampton,” is a lurid and atmospheric Gothic horror film that exemplifies the Italian cinema’s talent for crafting macabre yet elegant tales during the golden age of Euro-horror. This genre gem, drenched in decadent visuals and infused with a morbidly psychological undertone, manages to unnerve and captivate in equal measure.
The story unfolds in 19th-century London, where the titular character, Dr. Bernard Hichcock (played with unnerving restraint by Robert Flemyng), is a celebrated anesthesiologist with a dark secret: his fetishistic obsession with necrophilia. After accidentally causing the death of his first wife, Margaretha (Maria Teresa Vianello), during a disturbingly intimate experiment with a powerful sedative, Hichcock disappears, only to return years later with a new wife,...

It is almost unfair to ask if anything is as good as The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling's award-winning anthology series, with its groundbreaking blend of social commentary and hair-raising horror, continues to inspire generations of viewers, and it would be too much to hope that his follow-up series Night Gallery could be as powerful. However, the three-season show contains some legitimate gems with star-studded casts and top-tier directors, and fans are bound to find a few satisfying thrills.
In the horror-fueled anthology Night Gallery one finds famous names like Steven Spielberg and Joan Crawford, Vincent Price and Orson Welles. There are twisted tales from the likes of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Bloch and plenty of Rod Serling's brutally ironic screenwriting. The show may not stand up to The Twilight Zone, but it's worth finding out why fans like Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro haven't forgotten it.

Saoirse Ronan felt "sad" when Ryan Gosling exited 'The Lovely Bones'. The 'Barbie' actor was due to play Jack Salmon, the father of Ronan's character Susie Salmon, in the 2009 movie, but he is said to have departed the project due to creative differences.Ronan has now admitted she missed Gosling on set, but she understands his exit. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, she said: "I just loved Ryan. And his dog, George. "I was just sad that he wasn’t gonna be around. "But I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid."I have spoken to both now, and I complete - it happens, you know what I mean? It’s not personal, necessarily; it’s just sometimes you’re not on the same page."Mark Wahlberg replaced Gosling in the motion picture, and Ronan believes he was more experienced to portray a dad.

Its surprising just how many cult-favorite horror movies were significantly influenced by earlier films and, when it really comes down to it, were totally unoriginal. While this may seem like a point of criticism, paying homage to horror movies of the past or filmmakers wearing their influences on their sleeve was never a bad thing, and just because a movie was derivative does not mean its bad. In fact, many of the biggest cult hits took premises already explored in other movies and expanded upon them to create something even better.
Some of the best cult horror movies owe a lot to classic films of times past, as actors, directors, and writers have shamelessly ripped off well-worn tropes and clichs to create great B-movie favorites, satirical commentaries, or just plain laugh-out-loud hilarious horror comedies. As a genre known to repeat itself, its almost impossible to make a slasher movie these...

The Tigon-produced The Curse of the Crimson Altar is often regarded as a classic of the genre due to its eerie atmosphere and notable cast, which includes genre icons Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, and Barbara Steele. Directed by Vernon Sewell, the movie loosely adapts H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Dreams in the Witch House but takes creative liberties in its storytelling.
The film centres around Robert Manning (Mark Eden), an antique dealer who visits a remote mansion while searching for his missing brother. He is invited by the seductive Eve (Virginia Wetherell) to stay at the mansion, which is presided over by the mysterious Morley family, led by the imposing J.D. Morley (Christopher Lee). This article contains massive spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." Don't say it a third time!
If there ever was a filmmaker who wasn't afraid to let his freak flag fly, it's Tim Burton. Years before the likes of Clive Barker, Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright, and other horror geeks began making films, Burton was infusing all of his short films and subsequent feature films with homages to all manner of horror film ephemera. Even though Burton has expanded and experimented with his personal aesthetic over the course of his career, he's never lost his horror nerd credentials. His latest film, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," is further proof of this, as it's saturated with all manner of esoteric elements, and not just ones involving horror films, either: Burton is also a big fan of alternative music and nostalgic kitsch.

Where are all my witches at?
I, like many women of my age, spent a formative part of my youth enamored with the idea of witches. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t quite my bag, I adored Charmed. My VHS copy of Practical Magic got more play than a yo-yo. And, of course, I was an avid viewer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Did I myself dabble in magical arts, though? No, and I won’t pretend I did either. But man, did I so often wish that one day I’d just wake up with magical powers. I also wished I’d wake up one day and have a twin, too, as I also voraciously devoured the T*Witches novel series.

Severin follows up their 2023 collection of Italian gothic titles with an essential second volume that brings together three films and a miniseries. Each work takes a very different approach to the gothic as both a visual aesthetic and a set of thematic preoccupations. The results range from virtually archetypal to resolutely revisionist. For this well-appointed set, Severin provides a veritable bounty of bonus materials: new restorations, alternate cuts, commentary tracks, cast and crew interviews, visual essays, even a soundtrack CD.
Antonio Margheriti’s Danza Macabra, from 1964, is one of the very best Italian gothic films. Despite receiving negative reviews, Lost River deserves a second chance or to be newly discovered by fans of Ryan Gosling. The film centers around a family struggling to survive in a desolate Detroit and is filled with mystery, underground worlds, and the meeting of eroticism and violence. While Lost River may not be a carbon copy of Gosling's previous works or the filmmakers that inspired it, it showcases his versatility and willingness to embrace various forms of artistic expression.
Ryan Gosling has become one of Hollywood's most beloved and revered actors thanks to his versatility, which can see him playing polarizing roles, such as Driver in Nicholas Winding Refn's Drive to Ken in Greta Gerwig's Barbie; his handsome look and vibrant personality certainly does not hurt either. Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.
Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.
In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.
Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.
Check out the Steelbook artwork and full list of features included in the release below.

Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has left an impression on viewers. With its acerbic (and maybe muddled) allegory about social and economic class in the UK, the movie is a big twisty swing from the writer-director of Promising Young Woman. It also features star Barry Keoghan going there. In some scenes, there constitutes prancing around a luxurious manor in his birthday suit, galloping as free and liberated as a baby elephant charging a watering hole.
In others, there consists of the literal water (and other fluids therein) pooling around the hole of a bathtub. You know the scene: After Felix (Jacob Elordi), the wealthy patron and object of obsession for Keoghan’s Oliver Quick, is spied pleasuring himself in the bath, Ollie sneaks in afterward to slurp up the remainder that didn’t go down the drain. It’s disgusting, off-putting, and supposedly “titillating,...

One of my moments of dread is the threat of random violence. The moment in the original Terminator when the machine shows up at people’s homes, knocks on their door and asks if they are Sarah Connor then promptly shoots them when they answer yes is still chilling. Drawing inspiration for me from the classically brutal Martyrs (2008) and the odd cheapy eye transplant film Mansion Of The Doomed (1976) is this lovely gripping Italian horror thriller The Goldsmith (aka L’orafo) (2022)
The film opens on a chase scene in broad daylight over urban dirt fields, three children who turn out to be younger versions of the people in the film are fleeing from an older man. Arianna (Valentina Carbone), Stefano (Matthias Cavallo) and Roberto (Federico Graziani). During the chase, the girl drops a gold cross. The old man catches up to them and reaches down for the cross. The male children charge to stop him.

By definition, a "Scream Queen" is an actress known for her numerous and notable appearances in horror films. Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis received this title, mainly due to her work in the Halloween franchise. In the 1960s, Barbara Steele was The Queen, thanks to her roles in gothic horror movies, while other actresses gained the title after just one film. For example, Janet Leigh, Curtis' mother, earned the title primarily because of one memorable scene in Psycho. More recently Essie Davis was fantastic in The Babadook and Keke Palmer's performance in Nope was phenomenal - though these were one-off roles.

It’s not weird that we do this one first, right? Shhhh. We don’t have to actually tell anyone. One of you is going to give me shit, aren’t you? I think if we did do Dark Shadows Og, we’d have to do a whole Dark Shadows week. If you want that please send your love notes to the higher ups. You can’t argue with disc collectors eager to rediscover movies they loved at age 10, in terrific kiddie matinees. Cowboy star Rory Calhoun makes a perfectly fine Italian vagabond ladies’ man for this very un-serious ‘oriental’ adventure, and Yôko Tani is the requisite princess who needs kissing lessons. Tim Lucas’s welcome, info-packed commentary satisfies our curiosity about the long-unavailable title — it’s different than the A.I.P. release we (barely) remember.

Brooke Shields became a star and attracted mild controversy in this show, director Louis Malle’s first American production. Co-writer & producer Polly Platt and cinematographer Sven Nykvist collaborated on Malle’s fascinating look at life in a New Orleans brothel early in the 20th century. Prostitute Susan Sarandon raises two children in the upscale bawdy house, and art photographer Keith Carradine becomes an artist in residence. It’s a non-moralizing portrait of a bygone lifestyle. The handsome remastered release co-stars Diana Scarwid and Barbara Steele — and comes with a new interview with Brooke Shields.

If you’ve watched the new Netflix mystery drama, The Pale Blue Eye, then you’ve seen a work of fiction in which a young cadet named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling) helps Detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) in his attempts to solve a series of murders at New York’s West Point Military Academy.
Of course while the real-life Poe did in fact attend West Point, the man is much better known as the legendary author, poet, literary critic, and editor who is widely regarded as the inventor of detective fiction, a major proponent of the short story, and one of the foundational writers of the horror genre. You know the names of his most iconic tales: “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “Masque of the Red Death,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat,” and so on. Arrow swings into 2023 with a disc of a horror thriller ‘with issues’ — but appointing it with intriguing extras. Sandra Dee gets her perky nose all tangled up in an inter-dimensional conspiracy run by sneaky occultist Dean Stockwell — and we know that it’s all going to lead to a sacrificial altar. Roger Corman designer Daniel Haller directed this cross between a Poe picture and a psychedelic epic, for good old American-International.

Barbara Steele has one of her better performance showcases in Camillo Mastrocinque’s classy ghost story with a somewhat dispiriting twist. Steele’s fan-collectors won’t need extra encouragement, as she’s in most every scene and gets to play a variety of moods from delicate to seductive to outright poisonous. Quality performances flatter a flawed screenplay, and the fine direction and attentive cinematography clearly inspired Steele to give it everything she had. Severin’s quality HD transfer is everything we’d want, with dual language tracks and good extras including a Kat Ellinger commentary and a second track featuring stellar input from Ms. Steele herself.

Dario Argento in 4K — that sounds like a good idea, especially for his more visually jolting giallos. Arrayed in garish reds and blacks, this blood-soaked mystery shocker emphasizes exotic murders — stabbings, scaldings, lacerations from broken glass. David Hemmings is again the investigator, digging into evidence sourced not in photographic details, but the hidden artwork of a disturbed child. Techniscope images by Luigi Kuveiller and music by Goblin, with abbondante gore orchestrated by Signor Argento at the top of his form.

Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.

Today in 1978, Joe Dante's Piranha was released in the states. Today in 2021, it remains an understated, low-budget mild masterpiece of a creature feature.
A film like Piranha always lies somewhere between getting a bad wrap and not receiving adequate love. Admittedly it runs roughly on the Jaws plot formula - a quaint resort town is met with aquatic monster disaster on the weekend of the town's biggest event, which could have been preventable if those in power prioritized their people's safety over money. However, Piranha isn't a ripoff of Jaws- at its most uninspired it's a clever homage, even featuring a scene with Jaws memorabilia like a watch and pinball machine.
Dante's Piranha, with the help of an excellently witty script from John Sayles, balances tongue-in-cheek humor with legitimate horror in a way where neither the laughs nor terror fall short. It demonstrates an effective use of a low-budget,...

His name was Christopher Lee and though the hulking actor towered above the crew and co-stars, he proved shockingly agile as the newborn creature in 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein. No matter how hospitable or well-tailored, his Dracula was a clear and present danger—fleet of foot and supernaturally strong. We regret to report that actor John Richardson has passed away this week, just two weeks before what would have been his 87th birthday.
John found fame in the 1960s via films such as Mario Bava's Black Sunday and Hammer Film's remakes of She and One Million Years B.C., wherein he co-starred alongside many of the most beautiful actresses of the era, such as Ursula Andress, Barbara Steele and Raquel Welch who famously bemoaned, on first being introduced to John, that her new leading man was more beautiful than she was!
John's role in One Million Years B.C. (1966), Ray Harryhausen's prehistoric animated cult classic, led to a long relationship with his co-star Martine Beswick and a move to Hollywood, where he landed roles in big budget Hollywood productions such as Vincente Minnelli's On A Clear Day You...

Finally, a horror shocker that needs to make no excuses! Harry Kümel’s interpretation of the Elizabeth Báthory legend excels in all departments and succeeds in each of its aims. Erotic Eurohorror meets Sternbergian visual decadence, making a vivid (and bloody) statement about classic screen exoticism. Given the full glamour treatment, silky Delphine Seyrig is striking as the deceptively congenial vampire queen. It’s a rare throwback to the beginnings of erotic Eurohorror — sex and death, together again! Blue Underground takes the leap to 4K Ultra HD and stacks the extras with key interview content, and a soundtrack CD.

I’m a sucker for black and white horror films and thrillers. Hold That Ghost! (1941) and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) are the closest I ever got to an actual horror film when I was a child. The latter actually frightened me and gave me more than a handful of nightmares while in kindergarten. As I got older, I thrilled to the suspense-filled Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Wise’s The Haunting (1963), and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) on network television viewings. I picked up a VHS copy of John Llewelyn Moxey’s masterful The City of the Dead under the insipid title of Horror Hotel and discovered a classic that I love to this day. There is an overall spookiness that I associate with black and white that I wish contemporary horror film directors would go back to.

The Vincent Price Collection, the first in a series of Blu-ray sets celebrating the beloved actor’s glory days, arrived in 2013. They sold like hot cakes, quickly going out of print only to pop up on eBay with price tags that would make Bill Gates tremble. That initial release has just been reissued and is a near-duplicate of the original. All the films are here including The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Haunted Palace, Witchfinder General, and The Abominable Dr. Phibes. But there are changes—the Poe-related intros Price recorded for a PBS affiliate have been removed due to rights issues. And something new has been added; The Masque of the Red Death,...

Stars: Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Allan Kolman, Susan Petrie, Barbara Steele, Ronald Mlodzik, Barry Baldaro | Written and Directed by David Cronenberg
When it comes to horror we all tend to have our favourite type, some will say slashers while others may say they enjoy good old Hammer. I grew up on horror and when I was younger I had a thirst for any film I could get hold of, I found the styles I loved and directors that really caught my interest. One of these directors was David Cronenberg, but one movie that never really sat right with me was Shivers, I just didn’t get it. Then I grew older and wiser and with greater understanding realised just how good the film actually is.
Shivers was Cronenberg’s first full feature movie, and what a shock it was to the world (especially Canada), it threw not only...

The Vestron Video Collector’s Series returns when legendary director David Cronenberg’s horror classic Shivers arrives on Blu-ray™ and Digital September 15, 2020 from Lionsgate.
A cult favorite, Shivers is acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg’s feature-length debut and new title to the Vestron Collector’s Series. When the residents of a luxury apartment complex outside Montreal are infiltrated by parasites and transformed into violent, sex-crazed maniacs, it falls upon Dr. Roger St. Luc to contain the outbreak from spreading to the city at large in a film that “scares and shocks us because it’s so cleverly made,” according to Roger Ebert.

The Thief of Baghdad
Blu ray – All Region
Colosseo Film
1961 /100 min.
Starring Steve Reeves, Georgia Moll, Arturo Dominici
Cinematography by Tonino Delli Colli
Directed by Arthur Lubin
When he shuffled off this mortal coil in 1995, Arthur Lubin’s New York Times obituary was titled “Arthur Lubin, 96, Director Of ‘Mr. Ed’ TV Series, Dies.” It’s doubtful the prolific Lubin would have complained about that particular credit headlining his accomplishments; the man who directed Karloff and Lugosi, jumpstarted Abbott and Costello’s film career and gave Clint Eastwood his first break, also had a thing for talking animals. In 1950 he bought the rights to a book about a talking mule and began a series of hit comedies starring a four-legged chatterbox named Francis and his two-legged pal played by Donald O’Connor.
Industrious to a fault, Lubin’s career was spent crisscrossing from theater to film to television and back again yet...

Little Monsters and Shivers are next in Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series. Michael Felsher made the announcement today, noting that both releases will be out in September with a wealth of bonus material. The Collector's Series started back in 2016 with Chopping Mall and Blood Diner, before going through to 2018 and then disappearing again, leaving fans out in the cold. Now we're getting two awesome movies and the return of the mighty Vestron Video Collector's Series. And the best part is, we can expect more.
Little Monsters is a cult classic from 1989 starring Fred Savage and Howie Mandel. The story focuses on a boy named Brian who befriends a real-life monster under his bed. Brian discovers a secret world of monsters who sneak into children's bedrooms at night to pull pranks on them. Little Monsters is truly a lost classic and deserves to be seen by a lot more people.

Fear is the universal language. Terror is, as we have sadly seen so often, a global phenomenon. And monsters inhabit every crevice of this small world, from the deepest recesses of the South Pacific to the most remote peaks of the North Pole. So it should hardly be a surprise that horror films are and have been a component of cinema in just about every country that embraced the art form. Along with love, fear is the most profound human emotion, and any art — especially filmmaking — is the way in which we express those feelings to the rest of the world.
While the U.S., Canada and the U.K. (along with other primarily English-language nations like Australia and New Zealand) have produced healthy shares of the world’s catalog of horror movies, there is a vast, deep, diverse library of genre output that...

Barbara Steele is a horror mainstay who, like Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, found a place in the genre during the gothic heyday of the 1960s and made a comfortable home there for years. Also like Price, Steele has a look that, when the time calls for it, she can manipulate to ooze sinister intentions. Somehow she can turn just a little extra cock of her eyebrow into a visage that makes the audience squirm, and she’s employed this knack for the malevolent over the course of several decades in films like Black Sunday, Piranha, and Shivers. So when I went diving into Steele’s filmography, I wanted to find something that tapped into that evil streak, and I found it tucked in a little Italian gothic noir film from 1963 called The Ghost.
