Revisit the Classic Doc ‘Best Worst Movie’ and the Story Behind ‘Troll 2’ on Screambox!
Image
Now streaming on Screambox is the classic documentary Best Worst Movie, which explores the untold story behind the infamously terrible Troll 2.

Hailed by Variety as “strangely moving, insightful and entertaining,” the documentary is directed by the cult classic’s star, Michael Paul Stephenson.

“In 1989, unwitting Utah actors starred in the undisputed worst movie in history: Troll 2. Two decades later, the legendarily inept film’s child star unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of an Alabama dentist-turned-cult movie icon and an Italian filmmaker who come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure.

“Is Troll 2 really the worst movie ever made as claimed by IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes? Or is Troll 2, as some would claim, a misunderstood masterpiece that never fails to entertain… a work of genius. Twenty years after Troll 2 was made, the feature length documentary Best Worst Movie explores the phenomenon that is Troll 2...

Banijay Germany’s Good Times Founder Steps Down, Replaced By Shona Fraser

Sylvia Fahrenkrog-Peterson, the founder of Banijay Germany label Good Times, is stepping down after 25 years, replaced by Joint MD Shona Fraser. Fahrenkrog-Peterson opened the label in 1998, going on to oversee the likes of Mein Lokal, dein Lokal, Der Trödeltrupp and Armes Deutschland before Banijay acquired in 2019. Fraser, who joined recently and has been responsible for establishing Battle of the Reality Stars, Love Island and Naked Attraction in the German market, will take sole leadership, working closely with Chief Operating Officer Knut Kremling. “Together with the strong Good Times team, I am looking forward to creatively shaping the future of this production house, working closely with colleagues at Banijay,” said Fraser. “I’m a true fan of the existing portfolio and want to fully develop its potential, as well as exploring new exciting ways to captivate audiences with a fresh slate of programmes.

October 26th Genre Releases Include Deep Red (4K), Beyond Darkness (Blu-ray), Wnuf Halloween Special (Blu-ray)
Image
Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.

Other releases for October 26th include Don’t Breathe 2, The Amazing Mr. X, Boardinghouse, Eye of the Devil, Skull: The Mask, Frankenstein’s Daughter, and Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection.

Review: Attack Of The Murder Hornets Examines the Giant Wasp Invasion of 2020
Image
It has been a long and crazy year since the pandemic first started. Our memories are all a little dusty, but remember back in the summer of 2020 when news about the Murder Hornets hit? These big monster wasps that had invaded North America from Asia and were decimating the honeybee population? Also, grabbing small children out of their yards and flying away with them to devour their souls? But we were all like, “Hey Nature? How about you ease up a bit?” And then more nightmares happened and Murder Hornets kind of faded into the background.

Well, they’re back! Kind of. Over the past few months, Michael Paul Stephenson has been working on a new documentary focusing on the invasion of the formidable Murder Hornet and everything that means for North America.

The aptly titled Attack of the Murder Hornets follows a group of agricultural professionals, beekeepers, and naturalists...

Documentary On “Totally Evil” Murder Hornets Coming To Discovery+ — TCA
Image
Dastardly murder hornets are buzzing toward Discovery+.

At its Winter Press Tour presentation Thursday, the streaming platform announced a February 20 premiere date for Attack of the Murder Hornets, a documentary that examines the vicious, invasive species–formally known as Asian giant hornets–that have secured a beachhead in North America. The insects first showed up on this continent in 2019, displaying a nasty penchant for decapitating native honeybees by the thousands.

“I do see [them] as something totally evil and something that should not be here,” declared Ted McFall, a commercial beekeeper in Washington State who appears in the documentary. He was the subject of a New York Times article last May after murder hornets beheaded 60,000 of his bees.

“Hopefully we’re going to eradicate this thing so other bees are not going to have to suffer the same fate as that one particular colony,” McFall commented. “We depend on our bees…...

‘Attack of the Murder Hornets’ Doc Buzzes to Discovery+ (Exclusive)
Michael Paul Stephenson
Discovery+ will take on the infamous murder hornets in a new documentary feature, titled “Attack of the Murder Hornets,” by filmmaker Michael Paul Stephenson.

“Attack of the Murder Hornets,” launching on Discovery+ on Feb. 20, centers on a concerned crew of beekeepers and scientists who must work together to protect the Washington community from the threat of the Asian giant hornet, infamously known as the “murder hornet.”

Last year, scientists discovered the detrimental impacts of these murder hornets to other species, such as the more common honeybee. They use their big mandibles to behead honeybees — a single hornet can behead 20 bees a minute, while a small group can destroy a hive of 30,000 bees.

The hornets are threatening the United States’ food supply as the hornets target bees, the most important pollinator of food crops. The hornet, which is native to East Asia, was first found in the United States in September 2019.

During the Covid-19 pandemic,...

Fantastic Fest 2017 Review: Haunters: The Art Of The Scare, From Old-School to Extreme Horror
It's all fun and games until someone is left a whimpering mess. Five years ago, The American Scream debuted at Fantastic Fest. Under the direction of Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie), it lovingly documented the growing phenomena of handcrafted haunted houses. As I wrote in my review: "The reaction of the community to the haunted houses, professional-looking and handmade and customized and, yes, more often goofy and silly than actually scary, says more about the homeowners, their families, and their neighborhood than a volume of scholarly sociological observations." My, how times have changed. Directed by Jon Schnitzer, Haunters: The Art of the Scare examines and updates the same phenomena, revolving around three different aspects: a family-run haunted house, similar to the one in The...

‘The Disaster Artist’ Is A Masterpiece For Fans Of ‘The Room,’ But What About Everyone Else? [SXSW Review]
It’s a film about the making of arguably the worst movie ever made. That is how the team behind “The Disaster Artist” will hope to sell it to a public that may have yet to experience the wonder of Tommy Wiseau‘s self-financed passion project, “The Room.” Just as “Plan 9 from Outer Space” had Tim Burton‘s “Ed Wood“ and “Troll 2” had Michael Paul Stephenson‘s documentary, “Best Worst Movie,” so now does “The Room” have James Franco‘s “The Disaster Artist.” How it will play to the uninitiated remains a legitimate question, but one thing is for certain: its base are going to be in Valhalla.

Newswire: Bob Odenkirk gets caught in a web of greeting-card intrigue in a Girlfriend’s Day exclusive
In the Netflix original film Girlfriend’s Day, Bob Odenkirk stars as a Ray Wentworth, a washed-up greeting card writer who gets caught up in a web of eccentric intrigue and murder when he enters the race to create the perfect card for a new holiday: Girlfriend’s Day. Directed by documentarian Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie, The American Scream), the film not only creates the entirely new genre of “greeting card comedy noir,” it’s also got the sort of dark, deadpan vibe that appeals to our sensibilities here at The A.V. Club.

And, in a roundabout way, The A.V. Club helped make the film happen. You see, after reading an interview with Bob Odenkirk published on this very site, Stephenson reached out to him to invite him to the L.A. premiere of The American Scream. After the screening, Odenkirk asked Stephenson if he had...

Bob Odenkirk Stars in Hilariously Dark Trailer for Netflix Film Girlfriend's Day
Netflix has a new film on the way starring Bob Odenkirk, and it looks pretty damn funny! Here's the official synopsis...

In the Netflix original film, Girlfriend's Day, director Michael Paul Stephenson (The American Scream) invites you to experience a clever and quirky story about love, loss and the worst place to get a paper cut. Meet Ray Wentworth (Bob Odenkirk), once a king of the wordsmith world, and now a down-on-his-luck romance card writer. In an effort to recapture the feelings that once made him the greatest, he gets entangled in a web of murder and deceit as writers vie to create the perfect card for a newly crowned holiday: Girlfriend’s Day.

You'll see a lot of familiar faces in this trailer like Andy Richter and Breaking Bad's Stephen Michael Quezada! The whole trailer is just so dark and goofy, I love it! The paper cut scene alone had me cracking up.

First Trailer for Netflix's Film 'Girlfriend's Day' Starring Bob Odenkirk
"I hate optimistic people. They bum me out with their upbeat attitude." Netflix has unveiled a trailer for a dark comedy called Girlfriend's Day, co-written by and starring Bob Odenkirk as a greeting card writer. The wacky plot involves Odenkirk getting entangled in a web of murder and deceit as writers vie to create the perfect card for a new holiday: Girlfriend's Day. It's described as a "clever and quirky story about love, loss and the worst place to get a paper cut." The full cast includes Amber Tamblyn, Natasha Lyonne, Ed Begley Jr, Stacy Keach, Rich Sommer, June Diane Raphael, Andy Richter, Stephanie Courtney and Echo Kellum. This looks much darker and weirder than expected, but I'm not so sure about this one. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Michael Paul Stephenson's Girlfriend's Day, from Netflix's YouTube: Ever wonder who penned the perfect words to the Mother's Day card you sent last year?...

Blu-ray Review: Troll / Troll 2 Double Feature
In the wake of the success of Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins in the mid-’80s, movie theaters were flooded with low-budget horror movies about pint-sized creatures wreaking havoc on unsuspecting humans. No one took better advantage of this phenomenon than Charles Band, who would build a dynasty of films about little monsters first with his Empire Pictures and later with Full Moon Features—everything from Ghoulies to Puppet Master, Demonic Toys to Dolls. One of Empire’s first fantasy horror films about little monsters, 1986’s Troll makes its HD debut on Scream Factory’s Blu-ray alongside its notorious sequel, Troll 2, often considered one of the worst movies ever made.

The original Troll, directed by makeup effects legend John Carl Buechler in his feature debut, tells the story of the Potter family, recent transplants to a San Francisco apartment complex who begin to notice strange goings-on in their building,...

Netflix Buys Indie Films ‘Girlfriend’s Day’ With Bob Odenkirk, ‘Mercy’ From Chris Sparling
Netflix is expanding its roster of original movie titles. The streaming video-on-demand platform has picked up two different indie films, Girlfriend’s Day and Mercy, for both digital and theatrical releases.

The first indie feature Netflix picked up is the comedy Girlfriend’s Day, starring Bob Odenkirk as a struggling greeting card writer who must clear his name after he’s framed for murder. Odenkirk, who just released a sketch series W/ Bob & David on Netflix with David Cross, co-wrote and is producing the indie flick. Girlfriend’s Day is directed by Michael Stephenson (of Best Worst Movie) co-stars Amber Tamblyn. Netflix is planning a limited theatrical release for Girlfriend’s Day alongside its streaming debut.

Additionally, Netflix has picked up the home invasion thriller Mercy from writer-director Chris Sparling (Buried, The Sea of Trees). Starring James Wolk and Caitlin FitzGerald, Mercy tells the story of four estranged brothers who...

Blu-ray Review: Metamorphosis / Beyond Darkness
Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of two Italian films from 1990, the mad scientist creature feature Metamorphosis and the haunted house movie Beyond Darkness, may very well be the first time many horror fans have ever heard of either movie. The major common factor between the two is the presence of actor Gene Lebrock as the lead in both. In fact, these movies represent two of his seven credited acting roles, which means that by picking up Scream Factory’s double feature Blu-ray disc, you will effectively own more than 20% of Gene Lebrock’s filmography. It’s important to set goals.

In 1990’s Metamorphosis, he plays Dr. Peter Houseman, a brilliant scientist trying to perfect a serum that will stop the aging process. In order to test his experiment, Houseman administers the serum to himself and before you can say “Brundlefly,” begins undergoing a… what’s the word?… not “change”… not “transformation”… at any rate,...

Jeff Garlin
It is no slur on the good name of funnyman Jeff Garlin (well, not too much of one, anyway) to suggest he isn’t the first person one would think of to make a sports movie. So, how did he come to both co-write and direct the forthcoming comedy Dealin’ With Idiots about the apparently very competitive world of youth league baseball?

“The inspiration was my son playing baseball,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm star and director of 2006′s I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With recently told EW. “I was like, I have to write a movie about this. So I did.

Best Worst Movie Director Will Helm Bob Odenkirk's High-Concept Drama Girlfriend's Day
HBO.s Mr. Show With Bob And David was so amazing, it makes Bob Odenkirk.s few career missteps completely forgettable, and after years of behind-the-scenes work, his recurring role as Saul Goodman on AMC.s Breaking Bad is the series. most oft-utilized respite from tension, and we.re hoping that spinoff comes through. But before all that, Odenkirk is coming back to the big screen in Girlfriend.s Day, which will be produced by Magic Stone Productions and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment, according to Coming Soon. Odenkirk wrote the film.s screenplay, and he.ll play the lead character. This will be the first narrative film directed by Michael Paul Stephenson, who directed the highly enjoyable niche documentaries Best Worst Movie and The American Scream. Already it sounds like a match made in some kind of strange heaven, and the off-kilter concept cements my interest in the project. In a...

Zero Charisma: The Greatest Movie About Game-Playing Geeks
By Kevin Kelly

Movies about geeks have never been particularly flattering. Even in films like Revenge of the Nerds where the nerds win the day, there is plenty of dramatic license taken to make them badass so they can win the girl. But stories that cut to the heart of geekdom and reveal what true nerdery is all about? Those are extremely rare. It's even rarer when you find yourself pulling for the geek at the heart of those stories, despite everything else.

Luckily this year at SXSW we stumbled across Zero Charisma, a film about a gamemaster struggling to keep his RPG campaign alive after losing one of the main players. But problems arise when he has to battle with the replacement for popularity, and his world begins to unravel. The entire movie hinges on the fantastic performance of Sam Eidson as Scott Weidemeyer, and while he might seem a bit over the top,...

Michael Paul Stephenson
Anyone who's ever attended SXSW immediately appreciates the sense of fun in the air. In that spirit, Indiewire's latest curation of Hulu's Documentaries page includes a series of lighter, and often funny, docs that can help you approximate the Austin experience, even from afar. Watch these films now for free! A great place to start is with a SXSW alum, Michael Stephenson's "Best Worst Movie," still one of the most enjoyable documentaries ever made about bad films and fan culture. Stephenson, the child star of the so-bad-it's-amazing "Troll 2," revisits his fellow castmates and filmmakers to find out the impact of being involved with one of the worst movies ever made. Of course, SXSW's Interactive conference has proven to rival music and film as the event's most popular gathering, bringing together emerging technology and innovative gaming. Flashing back more than thirty years, Lincoln Ruchti's "Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade...

Meet the 2013 SXSW Filmmakers #12: Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews On Their Gamers Movie for Non-Gamers, 'Zero Charisma'
Having spent over a decade together, Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews have been romantically and creatively involved since high school. Their latest work is the entertaining indie comedy, "Zero Charisma." The pair have collaborated previously with director Michael Paul Stephenson as Dp (Graham) and editor (Matthews) on two of his docs, "Best Worst Movie," and "The American Scream." What it's about: An obsessive fantasy nerd gradually becomes unhinged when a charismatic hipster joins his role-playing game. What you should know: "We want people to know that this film is not exclusively for gamers. There are a lot of movies out there for gamers by gamers that can be fun, but this film is an indie comedy/drama first and foremost." On the challenges: "Despite many good examples, it can still be hard to convince people that a untraditional main character will resonate with audiences. Just because someone is nether heroic...

Break Out Your Twenty Sided Die And The Trailer For SXSW Selected Comedy Zero Charisma
Michael Paul Stephenson is on a roll. Once a trivia answer amongst cult film buffs thanks to his childhood acting role in Troll 2 - considered by many to be the worst movie ever made - Stephenson turned that notoriety into an asset when he made his directorial debut in 2009 with Best Worst Movie, a documentary about Troll 2's enduring cult. And then last year he proved it was no fluke, returning to screens as director of acclaimed documentary The American Scream. And now Stephenson is diversifying, serving as producer on SXSW selected comedy Zero Charisma, a picture co-directed by Best Worst Movie and The American Scream cinematographer Katie Graham and editor Andrew Matthews.Metal-loving gamer geek Scott Weidemeyer lives with his ornery grandmother and...

Sam Eidson in Zero Charisma (2013)
SXSW Film Festival: Check out the trailer for role-playing game indie-comedy 'Zero Charisma'
Sam Eidson in Zero Charisma (2013)
One of the more intriguing films listed in this year’s just-announced South By Southwest Film Festival lineup is Zero Charisma. Why? Well, partly because it’s an indie-comedy about role-playing games (and it’s not every day you get to see one of those). And partly because it’s directed by Andrew Matthews and Katie Graham, who worked as, respectively, the director of photography and the editor on the excellent 2009 Troll 2 documentary Best Worst Movie. (Zero Charisma is also exec produced by Best Worst director and producer, Michael and Lindsay Stephenson.)

Below, you can read the official synopsis...

Top 5: J.J. Abrams Directing Star Wars: Episode VII, Bullet To The Head Set Visit, Warm Bodies, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Sundance 2013
Even though we're nearly three months removed from Halloween, I want to use this week's opening paragraph to throw some support behind director Michael Stephenson's touching documentary, The American Scream. I recently caught the film via Netflix where it's available to "Watch Instantly" and I was impressed to say the least. Stephenson's previous entry, the indelible Best Worst Movie, quickly became one of my all-time favorite docs for the unexpected emotional punch it packed in following the lives of those impacted by Troll 2. Scream delivered on a similar level with its themes of family, community, and the pursuit of one's passion (in this case, home haunting). If you haven't seen it already, I recommend either checking it out on Netflix or picking up a copy for yourself from the film's website. All recommendations aside, much to the surprise of no one, this week's Top 5 is headlined by the...
