Oliver Stone on Cancel Culture: Director Talks ‘Gone with the Wind’ Removal, Refutes Misconduct Claims
Image
In an upcoming hour-long interview with the BBC World Service’s radio program “The Arts Hour,” always-outspoken filmmaker Oliver Stone opens up about a variety of hot button issues. The Oscar-winning director, producer, and writer joined host Nikki Bedi for a wide-ranging chat that, given Stone’s predilection for unfiltered opinions, includes plenty of discussion about questions regarding so-called cancel culture.

When asked about how older, potentially offensive films should be treated in the current climate, including “Gone with the Wind,” which was temporarily pulled from new streaming service HBO Max last month, before returning with an informative disclaimer, Stone said he does not support the wholesale removal of such work.

“It’s very true that ‘Gone with the Wind’ is a very colored treatment of the South, but I think it’s a classic, it was my mother’s film of her generation,” Stone said. “She loved it and it defined so many people,...

Melissa Gilbert Recalls Abusive Doors Audition for Oliver Stone
Melissa Gilbert
Actress Melissa Gilbert is the latest to come forward with allegations of sexual harassment, revealing details about her demeaning audition for director Oliver Stone for his biopic The Doors. The actress first went public with her story last week, but earlier today, she spoke with Today host Megyn Kelly, where she had more to say about this incident.

"It was an audition for The Doors. I went in, I read the sides, I read the script and he asked me to do a scene that he had just written and it was really sexual, very graphic scene. The casting woman had left the room. I was alone with him and an actor and he asked me not only to read it, but stage it. To get down on my hands and knees and deliver this really horrendous dialogue. It was really sprung on me and I started to cry. He said,...

Melissa Gilbert Says She Had a 'Humiliating and Horrid' Casting Experience with Oliver Stone
Oliver Stone
Melissa Gilbert says she once “ran out of the room crying” after an audition for Oliver Stone‘s 1991 movie, The Doors.

During an interview Monday on Andy Cohen‘s exclusive SiriusXM channel, Radio Andy, the Little House on the Prairie actress alleged Stone “humiliated” her while she was auditioning for the part of Pamela Courson in the film, which chronicles the career of the famous ’60s rock band and its lead singer, Jim Morrison. (Meg Ryan ultimately landed the role.)

“There were moments where there were men in more powerful positions,” she said of her experience in the industry over the years.

The actress took to her Twitter Friday to outline a time she was talking to the Platoon director about potentially starring in one of his movies. But after the initial meeting, Arquette said she began to feel increasingly uncomfortable.

“Years ago Oliver Stone wanted me to do a movie. We talked about the material which was very sexual. The meeting was professional,” the Oscar winner, 49, said. “Then I received from him long stem jungle roses. It’s not uncommon to receive flowers but something about them felt weird.

Oliver Stone has been accused of sexual harassment by actress and model Carrie Stevens. Stevens revealed in a Twitter post that Stone groped her while walking out of a party, and the revelation was a response to Stone’s own comments defending Harvey Weinstein against many sexual harassment allegations.

When I heard about Harvey, I recalled Oliver walking past me & grabbing my boob as he walked out the front door of a party. Two of a kind!

— Carrie Stevens (@CarrieStevensXO) October 13, 2017

Stone was asked to weigh in on the Weinstein scandal during a panel at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, to which he responded: “I believe a man shouldn’t be condemned by a vigilante system. It’s not easy what he’s going through, either.” He continued by saying the right thing to do would be to “wait and see” whether or not the many accusations...
