Goosebumps Season 3 is not returning after its two-season run. Despite having good critical appreciation and showcasing the beloved world of R.L. Stine’s stories, the show has come to an end. The decision does come as a surprise to the fans.
A source close to the situation (via Variety) says that Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the series to other outlets and explore a few different creative directions for the IP. This marks a subtle fact that, given the Disney+ and Hulu merger is forefront, IPs are seemingly eyeing big productions and series that pay them well. But is this the reason to call off David Schwimmer‘s star-studded show, or is there something more to it?

We’re just a few weeks from September. The month when Fall officially begins. When the leaves start to die and the weather cools. Pumpkin spice aromas fill the air. Somewhere nearby, a Spirit Halloween crawls into the corpse of a retail space like a spooky shell crab finding a new home. It’s the calm before the feverish storm of excitement that is October. And for some, like me, September is also scarecrow season.
Scarecrows are the harbingers of Halloween. Straw men with faces carved like Jack-o’-lanterns, they usher us into the creepiest (i.e. greatest) time of the year. Standing tall and looming over us in their fields with devilish grins, they mark the transition point between Summer and Fall. Thus, there is no more perfect time to watch a good scarecrow film than in the coming weeks.

The latest TV adaptation of Goosebumps, created for the small screen by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller, originally debuted on Disney+ and Hulu in October 2023, with the second season premiering in January 2025. The final episode of the show's sophomore run ended on an almighty cliffhanger, leaving fans to wonder whether the series would be renewed for a third season at some point in the near future. Now, nearly seven months later, the fate of the popular horror anthology based on the R.L. Stine book series has finally been revealed.
As reported by Variety, Disney+ has decided to hammer the final nail in the coffin of the Goosebumps series after only two seasons on the streaming platform. However, it might not be completely dead and buried, as a source close to the situation has reportedly shared plans that could breathe new life into the Goosebumps property elsewhere. The second season of the new Goosebumps TV series, which was inspired by the works of author R.L. Stine, made its premiere on Disney+ and Hulu seven months ago – and now, Deadline has learned that there will not be a third season on those streaming services. Goosebumps has been cancelled, but producer Sony Pictures Television “plans to shop the series to other outlets and explore a few different creative directions for the IP.” So we may see it continue somewhere else, in some way.
It not clear why this cancellation has happened, as Deadline notes the series “has done well ratings-wise. Seasons one and two combined have racked up 43 million hours watched across 16 international markets, alongside 75 million hours viewed domestically in the U.S. since their debut.”

It’s official, Goosebumps won’t be coming back for a third season. Sources told Deadline that Disney+ has canceled the horror series based on R.L. Stine’s classic books.
The show came from Disney Branded Television and Sony Pictures Television, and each season told a brand-new creepy story with a fresh cast. The second season, titled Goosebumps: The Vanishing, followed a pair of teenage siblings who stumbled onto a strange threat. As they dug deeper, they found themselves caught in a mystery about four teens who vanished back in 1994.
Unlike the original 1995 Goosebumps show, which featured a different spooky tale in each episode, this modern version told one long story over an entire season. It still brought in some of the monsters and objects from the books, but the storytelling was more serialized.

Despite a strong Season 2 premiere, Disney+’s teen horror anthology series, Goosebumps, won’t be getting a third season. Goosebumps: The Vanishing premiered in January 2025 and, upon its debut, was in the top 10 on both Disney+ and Hulu.
Per Variety, Disney+ has canceled Goosebumps, but there may still be hope for the horror series based on R.L. Stine’s book series. The show, which originally debuted in October 2023, featured a 10-episode first season. Its second season, airing in January 2025, consisted of eight episodes and an entirely new cast and story.
The outlet reports that an individual with close knowledge of the show’s situation believes that Sony Pictures Television, which produces Goosebumps, plans to shop the show around to other streamers and possibly explore “different creative directions for the IP.”
In two seasons, Goosebumps brought in 75 million hours viewed in the U.S. as well as an additional 43 hours viewed in 16 worldwide markets.

Nobody likes cancellations. The word itself will make your skin crawl. But sadly, this is what we're currently faced with. In 2025, Disney+ has renewed more shows than it has canceled. In fact, the only show the streaming giant has axed was the highly anticipated Tiana series. Well, that's until now. Unfortunately, Disney+ has just given the boot to the acclaimed horror anthology Goosebumps after two thrilling seasons.
This news is a huge disappointment to fans who had hoped the spooky adaptation of R.L. Stine’s beloved books would continue to deliver chills and eerie tales. But for us, we saw it coming. The signs were there. Although both seasons 1 and 2 were received well by critics and viewers alike, it's been almost seven months since the second season's release and there’s been an unmistakable silence.

The “Goosebumps” franchise returned to the small screen in 2023 with a Disney+ series that was only loosely inspired by R.L. Stine’s classic books, and the series essentially rebooted for the second season – titled “Goosebumps: The Vanishing” – with all new characters and an all-new story. But after just two seasons, we’ve learned that “Goosebumps” has been cancelled.
Variety reports this afternoon, “According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, series producer Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the show to other outlets and explore different creative directions for the IP.” In other words, the Goosebumps property is far from dead on the small screen, but this particular take on the franchise isn’t likely to continue.
The site’s exclusive report also notes, “The two seasons pulled in 75 million hours viewed combined in the U.S., on top of 43 million hours viewed across 16 international markets.”

Disney+ is no longer feeling Goosebumps.
The streamer has canceled its Goosebumps series, based on the enduringly popular books by R.L. Stine, after two seasons. The most recent season, subtitled The Vanishing, premiered in January.
Sony Pictures TV, which owns the rights to Stine’s books and produced the series, will shop Goosebumps to other outlets and also look for other creative directions for the property. There are more than 200 stories in Stine’s original Goosebumps books, spinoff series and short story collections.
Goosebumps on Disney+ was an anthology series. The first season premiered on Disney+ in October 2023 — a few weeks before Halloween — and performed solidly, ranking among Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series for four weeks. Season two debuted in January and didn’t do as well, never making the Nielsen charts.
To date, sources say, viewers have watched 118 million hours of Goosebumps worldwide — 75 million in the United States and 43 million in 16 international markets.

Despite garnering strong reviews and solid viewership for the streamer, Disney+ will not be moving forward with Goosebumps. The show took an anthology structure to adapting R.L. Stine's classic novel series, with season 1 following a group of high school students investigating the tragic death of a teen in the past that also leads to bizarre supernatural secrets.
Season 2, subtitled The Vanishing, subsequently shifted to twin siblings moving in with their father in New York City for the summer, only for their trip through an abandoned Fort to unleash a long-dormant evil. Each episode of the seasons incorporated certain Goosebumps stories into their serialized story, ranging from The Haunted Mask to Night of the Living Dummy and Stay Out of the Basement.

While Angry Orchard has joined forces with Jason Voorhees this Halloween and Fanta has linked up with horror icons including Chucky and Michael Myers, Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce’s beer company Garage Beer is channeling the spirit of Goosebumps this spooky season.
Garage Beer has joined forces with Goosebumps artist Tim Jacobus for special 12-pack packaging this Halloween that embraces the spirit of the season in classic Goosebumps style.
Tim Jacobus was the artist behind the cover paintings for the entire original line of R.L. Stine’s books back in the ’90s, and the Garage Beer artwork is unmistakably true to that artwork.

There was a summer where an alligator randomly showed up in the creek behind my childhood home. He was nowhere as big as what we see in the movies, but still, we all kept our distance until the day our visitor finally swam away. It wasn’t even a “see you later, alligator” kind of situation; he never returned.
That was when my fascination for crocodilians first took off. Movies like Alligator (1980) and Lake Placid (1999) helped shape this interest, as did all the non-fiction books I could find on the subject. Yet it wasn’t until years later I learned that “crocsploitation” was also popular in literature.
So to make up for lost time, I read just several of these novels this summer. This includes older, newer, adult, and children’s works.
Not every one of the eleven books I devoured was as good as the best, but I can...

Dylan Minnette began his acting career as a child actor, most notably in Prison Break, where he played the younger version of Wentworth Miller's Michael Scofield. He went on to appear in several smaller television roles before landing a major role in Netflix's teen drama, 13 Reasons Why, as Clay Jensen. The actor is also known for his appearances in the horror and thriller genres on the big screen, including Let Me In, Don't Breathe, The Open House, and the fifth installment of the Scream franchise. From that point forward, Minnette has dedicated much of his time to being the co-lead singer for the indie rock band Wallows. With no new acting projects announced yet, the actor, 28, recently weighed in on whether he has completely left acting behind for good.

R.L. Stine has always held a special place in the hearts of all those who have grown up reading his horror stories, right from the “Goosebumps” novels to the “Fear Street” series. Naturally, one finds their attention piqued upon the release of the latest slasher genre “Fear Street” instalment, “Fear Street: Prom Queen” (2025). The genre of horror has seen many developments in recent years, thanks to improved CGI technology. However, the real thrill lies in tricks from the old playbook of horror that play mind games with the psychology of the audience in the form of anticipation.
Slasher horror films came into being with two cinematic gems from 1960, the first being Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and the second being Michael Powell’s “Peeping Tom.” Since then, it has undergone an evolution in terms of how it is made. But what still remains at the core of this horror subgenre is the clever pacing,...

Slasher movies are in the midst of yet another renaissance thanks to recent releases like Josh Ruben’s Heart Eyes, the upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the seventh Scream film, set to continue Ghostface’s masked rampage in 2026. It makes sense, then, that the new instalment of the Fear Street franchise would lean into the stabbiest of horror subgenres. But perhaps no-one told director Matt Palmer that, while harvesting the fertile crop of slasher films gone by, it’s also possible — and desirable — to sow something fresh, too.
The original Fear Street trilogy, based on the books by R.L. Stine, was directed by Leigh Janiak and released as something of an event by Netflix in 2021, over the course of three weeks. But this new film relies primarily on the goodwill generated by that event, rather than bringing much in the way of original ideas...

At one time, Watcher director Chloe Okuno was attached to direct the fourth entry in Netflix’s R.L. Stine-inspired Fear Street franchise – but while Fear Street: Prom Queen has made its way out into the world without her involvement (the movie ended up being directed by Matthew Palmer), Okuno has been busy getting another genre project set up. It’s called Brides and was meant to reunite her with Watcher star Maika Monroe, but now Deadline reports that Monroe ran into scheduling conflicts with her work on the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him and has had to drop out the project. She has been replaced as the lead of Brides by Olivia Cooke, whose credits include Bates Motel and House of the Dragon.

Netflix has returned to horror territory with the release of Fear Street: Prom Queen. The film is their fourth entry in the Fear Street film series, which is based on R.L. Stine's book series of the same name. While the latest installment of the franchise has not exactly endeared itself to critics, it has topped the Netflix chart, as you would expect. Ahead of the release of the new movie, director Matt Palmer has revealed one of his strongest inspirations for the movie. This time, we need to travel further back in time and land in 1976, when the cult horror classic Alice, Sweet Alice was released.

Look alive, Shadysiders! Netflix's newest slasher, Fear Street: Prom Queen, has earned the crown after just one weekend, taking top spot on the streamer's Top 10 list despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 31%. Prom Queen marks the fourth entry in the popular Fear Street saga that began in 2021 with three movies released in quick succession, with the latest offering being a stand-alone film based on the 15th novel in R.L. Stine's young adult novel series.
Combining familiar elements from slasher films of yesteryear like Prom Night and Alice, Sweet Alice, Fear Street: Prom Queen follows prom season at Shadyside High as the school's wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. When a gutsy outsider (India Fowler) puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of '88 suddenly finds itself in for one hell of a prom night.

One person particularly key in introducing impressionable readers to the horror genre is prolific novelist R.L. Stine, who created book series like "Goosebumps" and "Fear Street." Of the two, "Goosebumps" was geared towards younger audiences, though it didn't skimp out on the variety of scares that Stine cooked up for each book. As creepy kids' shows like "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" premiered in the '90s, "Goosebumps" got into the juvenile horror anthology fun with its own television adaptation. As evidenced by the 2015 movie series starring Jack Black as Stine and the acclaimed 2023 Disney+ and Hulu series, Stine's source material offers plenty of family-friendly frights.
This article is focused on the '90s anthology series that premiered in 1995, which first brought the franchise into live-action. Initially airing on Fox Kids, the show directly adapted many of Stine's stories, often dividing them into multi-part episodes. While "Goosebumps" was never...

The Fear Street trilogy was an instant hit on Netflix. The 2021 horror franchise took viewers on an epic tale of horror in different eras, with each building on the other. The three films were certified fresh on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with over 80% critic ratings each. Netflix announced a fourth movie, Fear Street: Prom Queen, which has some connections to past films. However, this return to Shadyside was not what was promised. The film has pulled off something rare on Rotten Tomatoes by uniting critics and viewers with similar levels of disappointment. Fear Street: Prom Queen has amassed the lowest score of the franchise. It is currently rated 31% by critics and 30% by viewers, something rare on the platform, where viewers and critics usually see things with a significant difference. Netflix's long-awaited Fear Street: Prom Queen is among the latest horror movies to premiere in the past few weeks, being released on the streaming service on May 23, 2025. Sadly, the fourth installment in the Fear Street film series isn't garnering the positive reviews many hoped for, and has seriously failed to live up to the trilogy that so impressed genre fans and critics back in 2021.

Most film critics turned their backs on “Fear Street: Prom Queen” the day it started streaming. And yet, halfway through its world premiere weekend, Netflix‘s trending teen slasher is still popular with plenty of subscribers. Now four movies strong, Netflix’s Fear Street franchise is shaping up to be the best example of the ‘old wine in a new bottle’ trope when it comes to mainstream slasher flicks. With each entry focusing on a different era of Shadyside’s history of serial killings, the interconnected elements were one of the biggest highlights of the trilogy, which was released back in 2021. Now, even though the fourth installment to the franchise, Prom Queen, is more independent in nature, it showcases crucial connections to the overarching Fear Street narrative as well.

In 2021, Netflix released the horror film series Fear Street, based on R.L. Stine's book series of the same name. After a four-year break, a new film is officially out.
Fear Street: Prom Queen further expanded the universe created in the first three films. The slasher, set in 1988, just premiered on Netflix on May 23. The franchise has received positive reviews from critics and the audience, but the final entry didn't follow the same path as Fear Street: Prom Queen has the critics and the audience in agreement on Rotten Tomatoes, with negative scores below 40%.

A new chapter of the miserable history of Shadyside unfolds as Netflix’s beloved Fear Street franchise brings its latest entry, Prom Queen, four years after the release of the original movie trilogy. Adapted from R. L. Stine’s Prom Queen, the movie revolves around Shadyside High senior prom night of 1988, which becomes a hunting ground for a new masked serial killer. Unlike the previous entries, there is a noticeable distance the narrative maintains with the established mythos of Sarah Fier or Goode family shenanigans, featuring only some minor acknowledgements. This effort to treat the movie as its own thing would have worked if the characters were interesting enough instead of being limited to high school drama stereotypes. While earlier entries made conscious efforts to build emotional connections and made the leads appear like rounded characters with individuality, Prom Queen doesn’t bother with anything of that sort. As a result,...

Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen has allowed fans to immerse themselves in high school nostalgia — onscreen and in real life.
Based on author R.L. Stine’s books, the fourth film in the streamer’s slasher series began streaming Friday. Writer-director Matt Palmer’s feature stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt and Rebecca Ablack. Set in 1988, the movie centers on teen girls disappearing from a popular clique at Shadyside High.

As enamored as I was with the Goosebumps books at the public library when I was growing up, I was just as obsessed with R.L. Stine's Fear Street novels. There was something more dangerous about them, more edgy, more slasher-y. While Goosebumps sparked my imagination with frightful fun, Fear Street gave me something to look forward to fearing when I was old enough to cross the street to Shadyside.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers about “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” now streaming on Netflix.
Growing up in the U.K., “Fear Street: Prom Queen” director and co-screenwriter Matt Palmer wasn’t too familiar with R. L. Stine’s teen horror novel series that launched the Netflix film franchise. They had “Goosebumps,” Stine’s more popular series for younger readers, but “Fear Street” hadn’t made as much impact across the pond.
Luckily, Palmer was still approached to direct “Prom Queen,” the fourth chapter in the “Fear Street” film series, before producers had cemented which of the ten titles they had narrowed down to consider adapting next. This book spoke to him, even as he was well out of high school.
“The idea was like, ‘What if you tried to write a teen movie in the John Hughes mold — the kids were in “The Breakfast Club” — but there was a...
