Darren Ritter will be written out onscreen in Chicago Fire Season 14 when it premieres on Wednesday, October 1, on NBC. It was announced during Season 13 that Daniel Kyri, who plays the firefighter, was one of two cast members not returning in Season 14, but the finale did not write him out. (Showrunner Andrea Newman had told us ahead of time that was the case and she hoped to have him and Jake Lockett back this fall.) And now, social media posts from August 4 confirm that Kyri will be appear in Season 14 as Ritter. “Back! For a limited time only,” he wrote on an Instagram story of himself, Hanako Greensmith (Violet), and Jocelyn Hudon (Novak) on the set of Firehouse 51. He also reposted Hudon’s Instagram story of himself, David Eigenberg (Herrmann), Christian Stolte (Mouch), Miranda Rae Mayo (Kidd), and Brandon Larracuente (a new series regular) during what looks like a call. See both of them below.

Chicago Fire‘s Daniel Kyri seems to be returning for a period of time for the NBC procedural’s 14th season.
Earlier today, the actor posted a selfie to his Instagram Story opposite co-stars Jocelyn Hudon and Hanako Greensmith with the caption: “Back! For a limited time only,” alongside a peace sign emoji. In another behind-the-scenes image, Kyri could be seen decked out in firefighter gear next to fellow cast members David Eigenberg, Christian Stolte, Miranda Rae Mayo and newcomer Brandon Larracuente.
NBC had no further comment on the matter. Deadline has reached out to Kyri’s reps for additional details.
As we reported exclusively earlier this April, Kyri is exiting the mothership series after Season 13, alongside fellow series regular Jake Lockett. The actor, who has also appeared in One Chicago shows Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, began his tenure on the Wolf Entertainment drama as recurring character Darren Ritter.

The One Chicago universe is poised to return this fall with its firefighting procedural drama, Chicago Fire, returning with Season 14, which will premiere on Wednesday, October 1. Given how things wrapped in the Season 13 finale, as well as off-screen changes, it was pretty clear that the coming season would be different. It was initially reported that Jake Lockettand Daniel Kyri, who played Sam Carver and Darren Ritter on the show, would not be returning. However, it a surprising turn of events. Firehouse 51 won't be saying goodbye to Kyiri's Daniel Ritter just yet. The actor, who exited his role as a series regular after Season 13, has recently confirmed he'll be returning for the new season.
Taking to his social media account, Ritter shared an image of him on set with a caption which read, “Back! For a limited time only.” This clearly suggests that while audiences can be excited by Ritter's return,...

One of the longest-running franchises on television is Dick Wolf's Windy City One Chicago universe, which includes Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. In the aftermath of all three shows ending their respective seasons for the 2024/2025 broadcast lineup, it was revealed that NBC gave all the One Chicago shows new season orders. However, the renewals did not come without a catch: budget cuts. These budget cuts are rumored to affect shows like Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, which will look to minimize production expenses by reducing how much screen time certain series regulars have going forward. Despite this controversial decision, the streaming numbers for Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire have seen a streaming spike.

Goodbyes might be coming in Chicago Fire season 14, but it seems there are three characters we don’t have to worry about leaving NBC’s hit series!
As first reported by Deadline, NBC has inked new deals with three core members of the Chicago Fire cast to ensure their return for the upcoming season. Set to return are Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Dermot Mulroney, who have all closed new deals to continue on NBC’s original One Chicago drama. This will guarantee that we won’t have to worry about saying goodbye to Severide, Kidd, or Chief Pascal in the upcoming season.
It honestly makes sense that this is the trio Wolf Entertainment and NBC worked to lock down first for the new season. Kidd and Severide are the show’s central couple and are in the midst of a major storyline with the season 13 finale revealing the...

You already know how much we love the One Chicago universe here.
But naturally, there’s always a soft spot for Chicago Fire in particular, as it’s the mothership and the strongest of the pack, leading to two successful spinoffs.
Chicago Fire has been smoldering hot since its debut in 2012, and as we head into its fourteenth season, the series has only proven that it has many stories still left to tell.
(Peacock/Screenshot)
With Chicago Fire Season 13, the series still has six key characters from the first season who remain strong, which is rather impressive. Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide remains at the helm of the series and has been throughout the season.
We also have Joe Miñoso‘s Joe Cruz, Christian Stolte as Randall “Mouch” McHolland, and David Eigenberg’s Christopher Herrmann.

The Cfd is looking at some major changes in Chicago Fire Season 14. A department-wide initiative aims to reduce costs, which may result in the permanent removal of certain programs, items, and workers. Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman told TV Line that layoffs and cuts in their show are inspired by what's happening in our world. "It’s very real to the Cfd," she said. The show did not introduce an auditor to craft and out for their departing characters. "[It] wasn’t even done intentionally for that, but because it’s so in the zeitgeist, people coming in and gutting departments and gutting places, it’s very real to the Cfd. They’ve done that, too,” the showrunner said. "And so, that is definitely happening next season," she continued, then added:

In the weeks leading up to the Chicago Fire Season 13 finale, the pressure was mounting on Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to take the reins of control at Firehouse 51. With 51 Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) under fire and Commissioner Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) making a return, there was much for Herrmann to handle. Despite the pressure, the Season 13 finale ended with Herrmann deciding against taking on a desk job to remain a firefighter. That decision cleared the path for his long-time friend, Mouch (Christian Stolte), to ascend to lieutenant in an emotional sequence of events. Series showrunner Andrea Newman, in a conversation with ScreenRant, discussed the scene between the two, and Herrmann's decision to sacrifice his position for his friend.
"That's a fun one. That, again, was one that we knew from the beginning, because the moment he stepped on the stage Dermot was so great," Herrmann explains to the outlet. "We were like,...

The 2025 One Chicago crossover introduced viewers to never-before-seen duos across the three shows. It gave rise to some interesting interactions, including potential romances. Lizzie Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) is known for speaking her mind; when she fancies someone, she will pursue that person. The crossover had her and John Frost (Darren Barnet) working together, and some chemistry was established. Chicago Fire's Hudon thinks a cross-show romance akin to Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Trudy (Amy Morton)'s would be great for Lizzie. "She shows up on [Chicago] Med and flirts with John Frost, so I feel like that’s also a relationship for them to explore as well, Darren on Med," the actress said when asked if Lizzie's future includes Severide's (Taylor Kinney) brother, Damon (Michael Bradway). She added:
"I don’t know what way they’re going to go with love and trust for her, because I think her and Frost get along really well.

When Boden (Eamonn Walker) left at the end of Season 12, he wanted Herrmann (David Eigenberg) to fill the hole left at 51. And Herrmann certainly has done that just with who he is, but the assumption was he’d be the next chief. Chicago Fire Season 13 even saw him taking the steps to do so, including becoming captain and planning to take the chief test, after Dermot Mulroney came in as Dom Pascal to lead the firehouse. But that all changed in the finale. Pascal had been questioning if Herrmann wanted to be chief, and it turned out he was right to do so. In the finale, Herrmann revealed to Mouch (Christian Stolte) that not only was he not going to be chief, he was also stepping down to be a regular firefighter again so his friend could be lieutenant on engine. Showrunner Andrea Newman told TV Insider that Herrmann came...

As for Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) and Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri), both characters survived the episode despite their confirmed exits.
Carver revealed he’s transferring to Denver for his sobriety, but ended the episode by kissing Violet (Hanako Greensmith), making his goodbye feel incomplete.
Ritter’s exit wasn’t addressed at all.
Showrunner Andrea Newman says that’s intentional, leaving room for future returns: “We want to give them some good, surprising moments and goodbyes, and then maybe hellos later down the line,” she told TVLine.

Season 13 of Chicago Fire has been fiery and action-packed in so many ways and that state of affairs seems set to carry on for some time. Previous episodes building up to the Season 13 finale saw Dermot Mulroney arrive as Chief Dom Pascal, the new head of Firehouse 51. The One Chicago crossover and Monica's death also shook things up. There are suggestions that, ahead of the Season 13 finale of Chicago Fire, which airs tonight on NBC, some familiar faces in Ritter (Daniel Kyri) and Carver (Jake Lockett)would be leaving the show. On the issue of the season finale itself, the episode is poised to feature a shake-up at the very top of Firehouse 51.

The Season 13 finale of Chicago Fire will air on NBC tomorrow night, but the future of the show has already been shaken up. It was reported back in April that both Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett would leave the show after the Season 13 finale, but new information has come to light that might discredit this. Chicago Fire was already renewed for Season 14 at the start of May, and while NBC has yet to announce an official return date for the show, it’s expected back on the network before the end of this year, if not extremely early in 2026.

One Chicago has done an excellent job of cultivating different flavors for its three shows. Chicago Fire is the ambitious, multi-faceted thriller that offers death-defying feats, Chicago Med is the talky one-location drama, and Chicago Pd offers intrigue and grim investigations. Chicago Fire has been on the air for 13 seasons, and its firefighters have been saving lives for even longer. Eventually, the notion of retirement is going to come up, but we did not expect it to rear its ugly head the way it did during the recent episode "Cut Me Open." Suddenly, the career of one of Fire's most liked characters is in jeopardy.
We're talking, of course, about Mouch (Christian Stolte). He was earmarked, alongside his buddy Mouch (David Eigenberg), as the firefighters most likely to be affected by the layoffs that are being put into play by the Chicago Fire Department. The performance efficiency expert who made this ruling noted that Mouch is nearing retirement age, which makes him easier to cut (in theory).

We know who's leaving Chicago Fire in the upcoming season. Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) and Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) have been shown the door, even though there are a few episodes left in the current season. We're not here to talk about them, though. We're here to discuss the characters who are essential to the show's make up.
Ritter and Carver are going to be major losses, but the show will survive without them. The four characters we've selected below are exceptions to this rule. It would be hard to imagine Chicago Fire without them, and as such, we're confident they will stick around for season 14. At least we hope. My goodness, can you imagine?

We don't want to say goodbye to any Chicago Fire stars. Our attachment to each of the characters who work at Firehouse 51 is what makes the show so appealing. Unfortunately, we will be forced to part ways with both Darren Ritter, played by Daniel Kyri, and Sam Carver, played by Jake Lockett in season 13.

The actor did not comment on his future, or lack thereof, with Chicago Fire, until the afternoon of Monday, April 28. He posted a lengthy message on Instagram, detailing just how much the cast and crew and fans have meant to him over the last few years.

Chicago Fire picked up right where it left off with "Post Mortem." The dramatic episode concluded with Jack Damon (Michael Bradway) suffering serious lung damage on the job, and being told that he may never be able to fight fires again. The episode "Permanent Damage" explores the paranoia and fear that Damon has about his condition.
Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) paid his half-brother a visit, and urged him to be optimistic when it comes to his recovery. Damon's future depends on whether he can pass certain tests, and the 51 vereran told him that he's seen several firefighters recover without any difficulty. Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) was the chosen one. He was the veteran who was pegged by Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) to replace him as Chief in Chicago Fire's season 12 finale. It made sense on paper. Herrmann is a good worker, well-liked by all, and he knows what it means to put ones life on the line on a regular basis.
Herrmann didn't have the credentials or the know how when the Boden conversation occurred, hence the arrival of Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), but it seemed like it was only a matter of time until he put the pieces together and showed himself to be ready for this increased responsibility. Or so we thought. Because as of right now, we doubt Herrmann will ever lead Firehouse 51.

When Boden (Eamonn Walker) returns to Chicago Fire, things will be a little different than he left them. For one, there is a new chief who took over from him. However, Boden had blessed longtime Firehouse 51 member Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) as his successor should the latter choose to pursue that path. After trying, Herrmann was not convinced this was his path and the new chief noticed Herrmann's desire to withdraw from pursuing the position. "That same thing that Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) picks up on will be a discovery for Boden within this episode, I can give you that. But there’s no resolve to it, because growth is painful, and you don’t just one day pass an exam and all of a sudden you know how to do the job," Walker told TV Line of Boden's realization that Herrmann might not be interested in the position.

Chicago Fire Season 13 has been rough on firefighter Sam Carver.
But let’s be honest: his entire run on the show has been difficult.
Carver joined Firehouse 51 with a chip on his shoulder, and he didn’t like how open his new co-workers were about their lives.
While Carver has softened over the past year, his storylines have remained difficult.
Carver is currently in rehab to deal with an alcohol problem. He turned to drinking after his relationship with paramedic Violet Mikami imploded.
But Carver also realized he needed help and asked his direct boss (Stella Kidd) for the room to seek it.
Carver left his post at Firehouse 51 to enter a program, leading some fans to worry he might be gone for good.
When Jack Damon was added as a full-time firefighter, it raised additional questions about Carver’s future on the show.

Meanwhile, Severide and Kidd find out that Jack Damon is out at Firehouse 20. He says that it’s his choice, but it’s really not, and it shows the toxicity of some of the firehouses.
