Exclusive: Actress Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) has boarded The Runt, an Oscar-qualified live-action short film written, directed and produced by Emmy-nominated TV veteran Christy Stratton (Modern Family), as executive producer.
Walsh is just the latest to attach in that capacity today, following Brendan Gleeson with The Boat and Sharon Horgan with Calf. The project reunites her with Stratton, with whom she previously collaborated on the Emmy-nominated web series Everyone’s Crazy But Us.
The Runt follows Janet Bauer (Luna Martin), who like most 12-year-olds in 1979, lives for Friday nights at the Moonlight Rollerway. This particular Friday is special — it’s the last one before junior high starts. When Janet finds out the 8th grade girls have chosen her to be the 7th grade “runt,” she decides she must skate with a boy to prove her maturity and avoid this fate, which would ruin her life forever.

Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV may have exposed the ugly underbelly of ’90s kids TV, but good things have come from the documentary series that’s up for Best Documentary at this year’s Emmy Awards.
In Deadline’s conversation with the executive producers and participants of the Investigation Discovery project during Contenders Television: The Nominees, former All That cast member Bryan Hearne says he feels like there is a “100 percent chance” that positive change will follow now that executive producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz have shined a light on this dark period.
The docuseries, which is also vying for an Emmy in Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, set out to uncover the toxic and dangerous culture on the sets of Dan Schneider’s Nickelodeon children’s shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV kicked off with a bang, taking everything you knew about the beloved children’s network and crushing it to bits.
The Discovery premiere, which can now be seen in its entirety on Max, is a shocking and scurrilous look at arguably the most beloved children’s network for decades: Nickelodeon.
Nickelodeon began the careers of many actors, including Ariana Grande, Josh Peck, Keenan Thompson, Keke Palmer, Melissa Joan Hart, Zendaya, Nick Cannon, and Ryan Reynolds, among many others.
Quite on the Set doesn’t suggest that all Nickelodeon shows are at issue, as it ties the corruption to a writer and producer named Dan Schneider, who created The Amanda Show with Amanda Bynes, elevating her to a household name.
When you look at Amanda Bynes now, it’s hard not to imagine that had someone saved her from Schneider’s mechanizations,...

TV producer Dan Schneider has issued a new response to an Investigation Discovery docuseries that uncovers the toxic and dangerous culture on the sets of his Nickelodeon children’s shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The first two installments that dropped Sunday were meant to reveal “an insidious environment rife with allegations of abuse, sexism, racism, and inappropriate dynamics with its underage stars and crew,” according to ID.
The next two episodes air tonight.
“Dan expected and asked a lot from his teams,” according to a statement obtained by Deadline. “They worked long hours and consistently made successful shows. In the challenges of production, Dan could get frustrated at times, and he understands why some employees found that intimidating or stressful. In a career spanning 30+ years, Dan worked with thousands of people, many of whom still tell him how much they enjoyed and appreciated working on his shows.

In the first two episodes of Investigation Discovery’s documentary series into the alleged sexual abuse, racism and sexism that took place on several Nickelodeon series during early ’90s and 2000s, child stars accused network producers and crew members of child sexualization and fat-shaming, and female writers say they were forced to split their salaries and act out sexually suggestive scenes in the writers room.

Behold "Everyone's Crazy But Us," a new web series about Pinot-chugging parents (Diedrich Bader and Janet Varney) who can't understand why they're the only normal couple on the block. Part of the problem is they're drunk. The series, written and directed by Christy Stratton, feels like a more honest and scathing episode of "Modern Family." This time the familial incompetence isn't endearing so much as it's obvious and hair-raising. And, to borrow the greatest phrase from late '90s movie marketing, wickedly funny. The guest-stars are also fantastic: Enjoy Keegan-Michael Key as a nervous helicopter parent, Kate Walsh as a non-fan of citrus hand soap, and Guy Branum as a wry commentator on the art of event planning. We've seen a few shows about difficult people (namely, Hulu's "Difficult People") but I like how "Everyone's Crazy But Us" isn't straining to make us hate its buffoonish characters. It's finding different notes of lunacy,...

With the pressures of senior year beginning to weigh down on many characters in last week’s season premiere, it was only a matter of time before the strain started to manifest itself in the characters’ actions. None of this, of course, accounted for any out-of-school issues that could be equally as difficult to cope with, and could further complicate matters. This week’s episode sees two relationships get pushed to a breaking point as another character tries to cope with a new personal revelation, in an enjoyable outing that points to a potential career path for Jenna.
Jenna’s imposed silence, and how others react to it, is a very revealing aspect of this week’s episode. A lot of people around Jenna are...

Jenna’s affair with Collin, a relationship that came at the cost of her friends and parents, came to a screeching halt in last week’s episode, as the weight of Jenna’s actions finally caught up with her. With her Collin bias now gone, the sobering realisation of the weight of Jenna’s actions was not far behind. This week’s episode focuses on Jenna’s attempts to repair the bridges she burned over the last few weeks, in a strong episode that manages to keep away from the reset button.
Watching Jenna’s recovery and associated remorse this week is particularly compelling. While the show could have gone the easy route and had everyone forgive Jenna, as she is clearly ashamed of her own actions.

This episode deals with the aftermath of Kevin Hamilton’s discovery about his daughter, delivering an even-handed look at the different ways people view sex, set amidst some major events.
It was interesting to see the gradual progression of the dinner between Jenna and Matty’s families, and it was a very effective way to illuminate the differences between the way the two were raised.
