The 2008 Fantasy Flop Inkheart Deserves Its Streaming Success on Max
Image
The 2000s was a great decade for the fantasy genre. Not only did you have landmark franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter make their mark, but audiences also got to appreciate gems like Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth and Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. It is hard to think of another era that had so many remarkable series and films in the genre that still garners acclaim today. At the same time, with the genre thriving, you had many trying to capitalize and falling short, such as The Gold Compass and Treasure Planet being significant box office flops.

One movie that fell short of expectations was 2008's Inkheart, not making back its budget at the theater, and seeing the scores of critics. However, with the movie now on Max, fantasy fans have been giving the movie a second chance. We will examine the Brendan Fraser-led fantasy,...

The Wondrous World of Harmony Korine: Close-Up on "Mister Lonely" and "Trash Humpers"
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Harmony Korine's Mister Lonely (2007) is showing March 24 - April 23, 2018 and Trash Humpers (2009) from March 25 - April 24, 2018 on Mubi in the United States. The schizoid characters populating Harmony Korine’s very literally titled Trash Humpers are too busy fornicating with trees and trash cans to talk, but when they do, they speak in thought-provoking tongues. As the writer/director’s 2009 feature comes to an end, a character interrupts a late-night vandalism spree to deliver a subdued monologue: “When I drive here at night I can smell the pain of people… smell how they are just trapped… it hurts me to think they’re all living such balanced lives.”Should there be a manifesto to the grotesque philosophy embraced by the humpers, this will probably be it. Premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival (and winner of the Dox award...

Set in the 1980s, some 10 years after his retirement as one of Manchester United's most famed coaches, Sir Matt Busby (Brian Cox) is restless in the twilight of his life. Georgie is an 11-year-old working class kid whose widowed mother (Natascha McElhone) is doing her best to keep him out of trouble. Georgie tries to steal Sir Matt's wallet only to be tracked down, which we see here in this scene.

This fun and fictional tale puts the real-life legendary soccer coach (of England's Manchester United team) coming out of retirement when he discovers that far from being just another young thief, Georgie is an extraordinarily gifted soccer player and...
