Matt Damon Produced An HBO Movie With A Depressing Rotten Tomatoes Score Of 0%
Image
The premise for the 2001 documentary series "Project Greenlight" was novel and fascinating. Prior to production, the showrunners (including longtime friends and frequent collaborators Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) solicited scripts from untested filmmakers and ambitious film students, holding a contest as to which one was the best and could be the most easily produced. Damon and Affleck received over 7,000 scripts before eventually winnowing them down to one, titled "Stolen Summer," written by Pete Jones. Jones then swiftly and, with the producers' aid, made "Stolen Summer" into a feature film. "Project Greenlight," over the course of its 12 episodes, detailed the making of "Stolen Summer" from the script selection to the final product. Jones' movie was produced for only $1.8 million, although it was not a box office success.

"Project Greenlight," which aired on HBO, was meant to encourage independent voices in cinema and continue the 1990s trend of low-budget, indie films regularly catching nationwide attention.

Kyle MacLachlan Is Open To Reprising ‘Desperate Housewives’ Role: “That’d Be Fun”
Image
With a new group of housewives moving into Wisteria Lane, Kyle MacLachlan is open to returning to the neighborhood.

The Desperate Housewives alum recently said he would potentially reprise his role as deadbeat husband Orson Hodge or “something completely new” in a reboot of the Marc Cherry comedy-drama, which ran for eight seasons on ABC from 2004 to 2012.

“That’d be fun,” MacLachlan told People. “I mean, Wisteria Lane still exists on the Universal back lot. It’s part of the tour!”

MacLachlan debuted as Bree’s (Marcia Cross) love interest and eventual second husband Orson toward the end of Season 2 in 2006, becoming a key character in Season 3 regarding the mystery of his first wife’s disappearance.

“If for Desperate Housewives, if that were to come back — […] and if they would even want me to come back — I’d have to look at the role and kind of get a sense...

An Expensive Seinfeld Gag Was Originally Pitched As A Joke
Image
It helps for new television shows to hook an audience right out of the gate with their first season, but there are plenty of cases in which that inaugural period is needed to work out some kinks and find an identity. When it comes to NBC sitcoms, shows like "Parks and Recreation" and the American remake of "The Office" had a slow start, only to find its cultural footing in the following season. The same can be said for "Seinfeld," which has gone on to become one of the greatest sitcoms ever made.

Pitched as a show about how a comedian gets their material, series creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld only expanded the scope of this amount of comedic potential with each passing year. By the fourth season, "Seinfeld" was a prime water-cooler phenomenon that you simply had to be caught up on, with many of its jokes being introduced into the cultural lexicon.

Felicity Huffman Reacts To Kerry Washington’s ‘Desperate Housewives’ Offshoot
Image
With some new housewives moving onto one of TV’s most famous streets, Felicity Huffman is welcoming them to the neighborhood.

The Oscar nominee, who portrayed Lynette Scavo on ABC‘s Desperate Housewives, recently reacted to news of Kerry Washington‘s Onyx Collective offshoot Wisteria Lane, which Deadline exclusively announced last month.

“Isn’t that great? They’re gonna do Wisteria Lane with women of color, and I am all for it,” she said on Good Morning America, before joking: “I am gonna do craft service for it. But I just think it’s wonderful, and I’m a huge fan of Kerry’s.”

Huffman had no suggestions on who should take over her role as Lynette, an overworked stay-at-home mother of five children who longs for the workplace and eventually struggles cancer during the show’s eight-season run from 2004 to 2012.

“Oh my god, I have no idea,” said Huffman.

Desperate Housewives (2004)
According to Deadline, a reboot of Desperate Housewives is currently in development at Onyx Collective, with 20th Television in partnership with Kerry Washington’s production company, Simpson Street. Dubbed Wisteria Lane, the project is described as a “reimagining” of the original series, which ran for eight seasons on ABC from 2004 to 2012.

Wisteria Lane is a “fun, sexy, darkly comedic soap/mystery in the vein of Desperate Housewives, set among a group of five very different friends and sometimes frenemies who all live on a picture-perfect cul de sac called Wisteria Lane. On the surface, all the Wisteria neighbors are living the dream: beautiful homes, gorgeous families, shiny SUVs in the driveway. But behind those white-picket fences and smiling Insta posts are Secrets.“

Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant) is attached as writer. Although original series creator Marc Cherry is not part of the initial pitch, sources told Deadline that he could...

Desperate Housewives Offshoot Series Announced (& Its Title Reveals Connection to Original Show)
Image
The mystery-drama comedy Desperate Housewives ran for eight seasons on ABC from 2004 until 2012, but it continued to have a loyal fandom even after its ending. That's why the series is now getting a spin-off.

The dramedy series was set on Wisteria Lane, a street in the fictional town of Fairview in the fictional Eagle State. Desperate Housewives followed the lives of four women, covering their lives across fifteen years. Many of the projects considered Amy Adams' best movies would come in the years that followed, including the science-fiction drama Arrival directed by Denis Villeneuve. 'Desperate Housewives' Prequel Series & Wisteria Lane as a Character Addressed by Creator Marc Cherry
Image
A trip back to Wisteria Lane might be in the cards if creator Marc Cherry has his way. Fresh off the series celebrating its 20th anniversary last month, the Desperate Housewives creator is revealing that he would love to revisit the series, but he would want to do it during a completely different era and to be able to write a very specific character again.

During a chat with People, Cherry revealed that he would love to do a Desperate Housewives prequel series set in the '60s. The Emmy-nominated showrunner said, "I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade. Because the character I miss writing the most is Wisteria Lane. That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street."

“Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry is open to exploring a different era of Wisteria Lane.

In a recent interview with People magazine, Cherry pitched his idea for a prequel to the hit ABC series starring Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria.

“I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade,” Cherry told the publication. “Because the character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane. Desperate Housewives' Creator Wants to Return to Wisteria Lane - But Not for a Reboot
Image
It's time to reopen that box of secrets down in Wisteria Lane as, after 20 years, the show's creator, Marc Cherry is ready to return to the drama-filled cul-de-sac. The Desperate Housewives creator and showrunner recently teased the possibility of a prequel series, revisiting the iconic setting from the long-running ABC hit in an earlier decade. Desperate Housewives became a cultural phenomenon during its eight-season run from 2004 to 2012. Starring Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Nicollette Sheridan, the series followed the women of Wisteria Lane as they, well, behaved atrociously to get what they wanted, killing, stealing and doing all sorts in the wake of the mysterious suicide of their neighbor, Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). And it was delightfully watchable trash.

Philip Baker Hall's Life Changed After He Played Lt. Bookman On Seinfeld
Image
During his career, the late Philip Baker Hall was one of the most underrated character actors in Hollywood. Hall's earliest on-screen role came back in 1970, but he gained praise for several "breakout" roles later in life, including an outstanding late-'90s streak that included "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," and "The Talented Mr. Ripley." By the time of his passing in 2022, everyone seemed to know Hall's great work, even if he wasn't a household name. But according to Hall himself, the world first got to know him by another name that stuck with him for decades: Lieutenant Bookman from "Seinfeld."

Lieutenant Bookman was one of many idiosyncratic characters who stepped through the comedic revolving door that was "Seinfeld." The character, played by Hall, appeared in just two episodes of the hyper-popular sitcom -- season 3's "The Library" and the show's polarizing series finale -- but he made a strong impression. "It's been...

Unprisoned star Kerry Washington says the Hulu series has been canceled after season two.

“Ladies & Gents, that is a wrap on Unprisoned. This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3,” Washington said on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram on Friday.

Washington and Delroy Lindo starred in UnPrisoned, a Hulu father-daughter dramedy based on the life of creator Tracy McMillan.

Unprisoned draws from McMillan’s lived experience growing up in the foster care system as her father, Harold, ultimately, spent a total of 37 years incarcerated.

Washington starred as Paige, a McMillan-inspired mother wrestling with abandonment issues resulting from her father, Delroy Lindo’s Edwin, being locked up and her being raised for a...

Desperate Housewives Ending, Explained
Image
The Desperate Housewives ending wraps up eight seasons of mysteries in the picture-perfect suburban neighborhood, Wisteria Lane, and the ending answers big questions about what happens to main characters Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross), and Gabrielle "Gaby" Solis (Eva Longoria). Although Mary Alice Young's (Brenda Strong) friends have many happy times together, it was clear that the conclusion would be just as emotional as the rest of the series, as most episodes focus on the intense personal lives of the four main residents of this seemingly peaceful street in the small town of Fairview.

There are several mysteries in every season, from why Paul Young (Mark Moses) comes back home after a decade away to what Angie Bolen (Drea de Matteo) is hiding from. The best shows like Desperate Housewives have series finales that are gripping, memorable, and wrap up every major storyline,...

‘UnPrisoned’ Boss on Standout Episode of Season 2 and Why TV “Could Use a Lot More Humor”
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode five of UnPrisoned.]

In season two of UnPrisoned, Paige (Kerry Washington) and Edwin (Delroy Lindo) mending the wounds of their still-shaky father-daughter relationship takes a backseat to their concerns about Finn (Faly Rakotohavana) and how being the son of a mother whose father was incarcerated for most of her life —and who has had no relationship with his own biological father — has affected him.

“I think that maybe the perception last year was that it was a show about a single woman whose father had spent the bulk of her life in prison, and a lot of the narrative did fuel that. But it is a show about a woman, her father and his grandson,” showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It is a multi-generational family, and we have a multi-generational story.”

With that comes the possibility of generational curses, the fear of which prompts Paige to not only let...

The last season began on Edwin’s release day, and the story continued because Paige decided to let him live with her and her teenage son Finneas (Faly Rakotohavana).

Paige’s inner child (Jordyn McIntosh) also helps her through tough spots in her present life.

For those who need a recap of UnPrisoned Season 1, here’s what to remember:

‘UnPrisoned’ Creator on Her Dad and the Real Nadine Dying One Day Apart Before Show’s Launch
Image
Comedy isn’t the first genre most would assign a show about a man getting out of federal prison and reuniting with his family after serving decades behind bars. But humor is the instinctive approach UnPrisoned creator and writer Tracy McMillan took for the Hulu series, which draws from her lived experience growing up in the foster care system as her father, Harold, ultimately, spent a total of 37 years incarcerated.

“Every person who has ever been arrested or who is in prison is surrounded by people who love them — or not — but that impacts way more than just that one person,” McMillan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The goal was to make it safe to talk about this in a way. Because if it’s happening this much but no one’s talking about it, then how can I reduce the shame around this thing by putting it out there?”

In the dramedy,...

Desperate Housewives' Return Would Only Work Under 1 Condition
Image
Desperate Housewives cast is open to returning for a revival, hinting at a potential comeback with original characters front and center. A potential revival would need to honor the show's rich history and original cast, rather than wiping the slate clean for a reboot. Wisteria Lane and its core characters were essential to the show's success, making a comeback without them seem like a pale imitation.

Desperate Housewives is one of few shows where the cast is still interested in returning following a long and successful run, but it would only work under one condition. The hit drama focused on the lives and loves of a group of women living in the fictional Wisteria Lane. Each of the eight seasons had an overarching mystery that left many questions about what was happening behind closed doors for the cul-de-sac's residents. Despite Desperate Housewives ending after eight seasons in 2012, its cast has...

Everything You Need to Know About 'Desperate Housewives' Behind-the-Scenes Drama
Image
With any long-running TV show, there are bound to be rumors of behind-the-scenes drama and feuds. Most of the time these are just ploys to get people talking, but sometimes they have some weight behind them. Weve seen these kinds of stories come out of shows such as The Good Wife, where a feud between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi almost tore the series apart. And, of course, the ever-infamous feud between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker on, and off, the set of Sex and the City. But theres another series that has its fair share of scandals: Desperate Housewives. The show follows four housewives; Susan (Teri Hatcher), Bree (Marcia Cross), Lynette (Felicity Huffman), and Gaby (Eva Longoria), and the dramas and scandals that fill their day-to-day lives. The inciting incident is the death of their friend and fellow housewife Mary Alice (Brenda Strong), and when they discover that...

This 'Desperate Housewives' Episode Changed the Show for Good
Image
In a show like Desperate Housewives which thrives off of unhinged drama, it’s hard to narrow down one specific moment that changed the series. The show begins with the death of Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong), who also serves as the show’s narrator. Her death is shocking enough on its own considering it happens in the first few minutes of the pilot episode, but it helped get the show rolling as the entirety of the first season followed the mystery surrounding her death. Going forward the series dropped lots of major bombshells. From creepy neighbors, to loan sharks, and tornadoes. Every storyline played into making Desperate Housewives what it is, but there’s one episode in particular that sticks out as a turning point for the show, and it’s the episode “Bang” from Season 3.

The Chilling True Story That Inspired ‘Desperate Housewives’
Image
In the early 2000s, the women of Wisteria Lane ruled soapy television. Created by Marc Cherry, Desperate Housewives began airing in 2004 and portrayed a group of women who find themselves struck by tragedy when their friend Mary Alice (Brenda Strong) inexplicably kills herself. The entirety of the first season follows the aftermath of Mary Alice’s death, and sees her friends try to uncover the mystery behind it. The series lasted 8 seasons, and with each passing season the storylines got progressively more unhinged, with tornadoes striking the lane, and planes crashing onto it. But despite some more unique moments, the show’s inspiration is grounded in surprising, and dark, reality.

The Last Five Minutes of ‘Desperate Housewives’ Ruins the Show
Image
Desperate Housewives changed the scope of television when we were welcomed into the neighborhood of Wisteria Lane in 2004. Created by Marc Cherry, the series followed a group of women, “housewives”, who consistently found themselves elbow-deep in dirty laundry — and not the machine-washable kind. The series started off with a bang — literally, when Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) committed suicide for unknown reasons. She's our narrator for the series and through her, we follow her friends, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria), Susan (Teri Hatcher), Bree (Marcia Cross), and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) as they try to uncover the reason behind her suicide, all the while balancing their own messy dramas. Every season brought a new mystery to the lane, and there was no predicting what would happen next. Everything from tornadoes, to a plane crashing in the middle of the street, and illegitimate children — there was never a shortage of drama on Desperate Housewives.

Heels, Blindspotting & More Canceled by Starz, The Venery of Samantha Bird Scrapped
Image
Starz has decided to cancel its original shows Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, along with the yet-to-premiere series The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels is a drama about two wrestling brothers dealing with their complicated relationship after their father's death. Run the World is a comedy following a group of women in Harlem, while Blindspotting is a spinoff/sequel to the 2018 film and focuses on a man's partner after his imprisonment.

Despite the apparent end of the writers strike, which will launch a long list of productions that were halted, Starz has decided to cancel some of its original shows. Including the popular drama starring Stephen Amell, Heels. Just months after the premiere of the second seasons of Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, Starz has decided not to continue with any of the series for a third installment. ‘Heels’, ‘Run The World’ & ‘Blindspotting’ Axed At Starz; ‘The Venery of Samantha Bird’ Not Moving Forward
Image
Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.

The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.

Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.

Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

“I Miss Gabby So Much”: Eva Longoria Hopeful For A Desperate Housewives Revival
Image
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria reveals she would be interested in a revival. The series, created by Marc Cherry, premiered on ABC in 2004 and quickly found success, generating impressive ratings during its eight-season run. It explored the lives of four women residing in a seemingly picture-perfect community while uncovering many of their secrets through the narration of deceased neighbor Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). Longoria portrayed Gabrielle Solis, a former model whose complicated marriage to Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) was an important storyline throughout.

A Desperate Housewives reboot has already been dismissed by several cast members, but Longoria still appears eager to return. In a recent interview with Access, the star shared that she would "be the first to sign up" for a potential revival but admitted that it seems unlikely to happen. Read Longoria's comments regarding a Desperate Housewives revival below:

"She'd be an influencer for sure. She'd be a social media mogul.

Caroline B. Marx (‘UnPrisoned’ costume designer) builds ‘subtle clues’ of character development into clothes [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“The story itself is just so compelling… it’s all about healing,” shares Caroline B. Marx about what drew her to the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned,” which centers on a daughter attempting to reconcile with her father after his 17-year prison sentence. The costume designer appreciated that the show is “based on reality” — it draws inspiration from the life of creator Tracy McMillan — and that it is “socially relevant.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Kerry Washington stars as Paige, a relationship therapist who welcomes her father Edwin (Delroy Lindo) into her home despite the effects his incarceration had on her as a child. Marx collaborated closely with the actress to pick the color palate of Paige’s fashion, which McMillan had described to her as “Minneapolis but by way of Brooklyn.” The creator conceived of Paige as a “hipster but she’s adulting now,” but Tracy herself “doesn’t wear color at all,...

Starz Drama Series ‘The Venery Of Samantha Bird’ Pauses Production With Two Episodes Left To Shoot
Image
Exclusive: Starz’ The Venery of Samantha Bird has shut down production as a result of the writers strike.

Deadline understands that the drama series has paused filming with two episodes of its eight episode order left to shoot. The series shoots in Montreal.

It comes after Netflix’s Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable and HBO Max’s Hacks were shut down for similar reasons and writers rooms for shows such as Starz’ Power Book III: Raising Kanan, NBC’s Night Court, Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Showtime’s Yellowjackets and ABC’s Abbott Elementary also closed their writing rooms.

The series stars Katherine Langford in the title role and was created by Anna Moriarty.

It follows Samantha Bird, who, while visiting family in New England, Samantha Bird reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But underneath their fever dream lurks a more unsettling interpretation of this affair.

Fans of “Seinfeld” should get the reference, given that Sue Ellen Mischke (played by future “Desperate Housewives” star Brenda Strong) was the nemesis of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Elaine Benes, who nicknamed Sue Ellen “the braless wonder” because she never wore one. Elaine bought her a bra as a gift, with Sue Ellen turning the tables by wearing it beneath a blazer, sans shirt.

Marcia Cross Still Hasn’t Seen the Last Episode of ‘Desperate Housewives,’ But She is Ready for Next Iconic Role
Image
After playing Kimberly Shaw in “Melrose Place” and Bree Van de Kamp in “Desperate Housewives,” Marcia Cross is ready for her next iconic role.

“I always assumed that after ‘Desperate Housewives’ there will be a third act. It has not happened yet. That’s the double-edged sword of being an ‘icon.’ Everybody thinks you are that character and by the time they forget about it, you are not on anybody’s list anymore,” she said at Series Mania in Lille, France.

“I am at this funny crossroad: I am this incredibly ripe human and yet Hollywood is not particularly interested. We are tackling LGBTQ+ issues, although there is still a long way to go, we are talking about people of color, but – and I hate to say it – we don’t love to see older women. We were 40-year-old women doing ‘Dh’ and that was a big deal. Now, I want to see 60-year-old women.
