Chess, the first-ever Broadway revival of the Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus & Tim Rice musical which will star Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher, will begin previews at the Imperial Theatre on Wednesday, October 15, with an opening date of Sunday, November 16, producers announced today.

The production, previously announced, will feature a new book by Emmy winner Danny Strong (Dopesick) in place of Rice’s original (the musical is based on Rice’s original idea). Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) is on board to direct.

The fall revival will mark Michele’s return to Broadway following her acclaimed 2022-23 run in Funny Girl. Tveit is a 2021 Tony winner for his performance in Moulin Rouge!, and Christopher last appeared on Broadway in the 2023 revival of Sweeney Todd.

Additional casting and creative team will be announced shortly.

Devin Harjes, who had roles in TV series including HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Fox’s Gotham and NBC’s Manifest, has died. He was 41.

According to Harjes’ official website, he died May 27 in New York City. The Hollywood Reporter said he had been battling cancer, which Deadline confirmed with his representatives.

Born in Lubbock, Texas, on July 29, 1983, Harjes studied acting in college and eventually moved to New York City, where he appeared in Off Broadway productions and in student films.

Harjes, who also practiced martial arts, was best known for playing boxer Jack Dempsey on Boardwalk Empire in a two-episode arc on the Prohibition-era gangster series. His other small-screen credits included Gotham, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil, Elementary, Blue Bloods, FBI and Manifest.

His film credits include the 2012 indie The Forest Is Red and most recently Danny Strong’s 2017 J.D. Salinger biopic Rebel In the Rye starring Nicholas Hoult.

Lea will be starring in a Broadway revival of the classic musical Chess alongside Tony winner Aaron Tveit and rising star Nicholas Christopher.

Chess features music written by Abba’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and Egot recipient Tim Rice. It’s billed as “the iconic musical where power and passion collide, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s America versus Russia at the World Chess Championship, where the espionage and romance are as complicated and exhilarating as the game itself. Years and years after Jussie Smollett claimed to be the victim of a Maga hate crime on the cold streets of Chicago, the whole matter, lawsuits and all, is over — after the ex-Empire star wrote a check.

Exclusive: Lbi Entertainment has signed for management the prolific Emmy winning writer, director and producer Danny Strong.

Strong, whose recent work includes Dopesick, Empire and Recount, is currently working on a classic Hollywood-era film for director Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Strong wrote the script on spec which was quickly taken off the market by Lbi. Strong is also currently co-writing Ultra with Tony Kushner for Steven Spielberg, based on the Rachel Maddow podcast, Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra.

Strong’s resume includes pop culture successes like the Fox drama series Empire, which he co-created, served as exec producer and director of several episodes, but he is one of Hollywood’s stronger writers in hot button and political topics. He was the creator and showrunner of the Hulu series Dopesick, which starred Michael Keaton and focused on the Opioid scourge and the role of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma in spreading it.

Everyone can change their mind, and it appears that Sarah Michelle Gellar could have done just that when it comes to her opinion on a possible revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The incredibly popular fantasy horror series that debuted almost three decades ago in 1997 has been circling a reboot or revival for almost six years now, but the idea has never managed to gain a foothold. Additionally, Gellar has frequently dismissed the idea of being involved in such a reboot if it did happen, but that could have changed.

During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar addressed the idea of reviving Buffy, and now seems much more open to the idea. The change of heart appears to have partly been instigated by her latest role in Dexter: Original Sin. She explained to Barrymore:

Lee Daniels’ TV series Empire ran for six seasons on Fox, but the director has confirmed that the behind-the-scenes process wasn’t his favorite. In a new interview with The Film Stage, Daniels confirmed he “only did Empire just so I could see what that experience was like.”

The Paramount Global-backed broadcast network has handed out a formal series order to The Gates, the first Black daytime soap opera in 35 years.

The network on Monday announced that the series following the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community, will debut in January 2025. The specific time period, launch date and other details will be revealed later.

The official series pickup comes a month after CBS announced it was teaming with the NAACP to develop The Gates with the news marking a show of confidence in the script from. The actor, who portrayed hip-hop music mogul Lucious Lyon on six seasons of the celebrated Fox drama, claims CAA failed to act in his best interest because it also represented Empire’s co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong along with the show’s production companies in a package deal.

‘It’s time for change,” former Empire star Terrence Howard said today announcing he is suing CAA over allegedly screwing him financially over the hip hop soap’s blockbuster six season run. “We need accountability. We need access. We need to be able to share in the profits.”

In a press conference Friday at the office of The Cochran Firm, Howard accused his former agency of engaging in a lucrative packaging deal with the show’s creators and producers Imagine. Consequently, according to Howard and his legal team, the actor was bilked of “a much higher salary given the success of the show.”
