Glee makes it three straight at the Tonys.
When Darren Criss picked up a Tony Award on Sunday night for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for his turn in Maybe Happy Ending, the veteran star became the third straight Glee alum to win a trophy on Broadway’s biggest night. He followed hot on the heels of Jonathan Groff, who won his first Tony last year for Merrily We Roll Along (and he was nominated this year in the same category as Criss for Just in Time), and Alex Newell, who won best featured actor in a musical for Shucked in 2023.

Just days after teasing that a big announcement was on the way, Lea Michele has confirmed that she will be back on Broadway this year!
Lea will be starring in a Broadway revival of the classic musical Chess alongside Tony winner Aaron Tveit and rising star Nicholas Christopher.
Chess features music written by Abba’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and Egot recipient Tim Rice. It’s billed as “the iconic musical where power and passion collide, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. It’s America versus Russia at the World Chess Championship, where the espionage and romance are as complicated and exhilarating as the game itself. For the two players and the woman torn between them, everything—personal, professional, and political—is at risk… and nobody’s rules are the same.”
The revival will be directed by Michael Mayer, who previously worked with Lea on both Funny Girl and Spring Awakening,...

Years and years after Jussie Smollett claimed to be the victim of a Maga hate crime on the cold streets of Chicago, the whole matter, lawsuits and all, is over — after the ex-Empire star wrote a check.
Actually, two checks.
A day after officials for the Windy City announced they had reached a settlement with Smollett, the performer says he’s giving $50,000 to one local organization, and an additional $10,000 to another. “The decision to settle the civil lawsuit was not the most difficult one to make,” Smollett said today to Deadline. “After repeatedly refusing to pay the City, I was presented with an opportunity to make a charitable donation in exchange for the case being dismissed,” he went on to say (see Smollett’s full statement below).
Back in November last year, the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously overturned the legal consequences Smollett suffered due to the high profile incident. In the court’s opinion,...

Even nepo-babies have to audition, folks. And it seems as though they are, in droves, for the upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer sequel series. According to Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan — a.k.a. Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg, respectively — there have been more than one original cast member from the iconic teen series whose now-teen kids have auditioned for the latest iteration. Now: who wants to play a little game of "speculate and find out," eh?
The news came about during an interview between the two actresses and Us Weekly. During their sit-down with the publication, Hannigan let out a teasing bit of information, saying, "I know somebody who auditioned for something on the show." To which Gellar replied, "I know somebody who was on the show whose child auditioned for the show. I know a few people from the show whose children came in." This, of course,...

Oscar-nominated actor Terrence Howard, star of Crash, Hustle & Flow, and Iron Man, among many other acclaimed movies, has revealed that he once turned down the opportunity to portray the late, great Marvin Gaye in a Lee Daniels-directed biopic exploring the life of the legendary soul singer. His reasoning is that he only likes to accept roles he feels he can fully commit to, and after discovering the rumors about the musician's sexuality, he decided he couldn't play "that character 100%" because he wouldn't kiss another man.
During a recent appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, Howard recalled that the "biggest mistake" of his acting career was passing on the offer to star in a Smokey Robinson biopic because he was already in "conversation with Lee Daniels" about a separate project centered around Marvin Gaye. Maher validated his decision, saying Howard "would've been perfect" in the role that he...

In the age of binge-worthy television, few series manage to rise above entertainment and land a lasting social impact. That’s exactly what happened when Michael Keaton stepped into one of the most powerful roles of his career. At the center of Hulu’s Dopesick, Keaton helped tell a story many Americans already knew, but few fully understood.
It was a story about a family, a drug, and a devastating betrayal of the public trust. The Hulu mini-series creator, Danny Strong, reflected on the story behind the show’s unflinching portrayal of the epidemic and the scandal of the world’s most evil family.

Strong, whose recent work includes Dopesick, Empire and Recount, is currently working on a classic Hollywood-era film for director Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Strong wrote the script on spec which was quickly taken off the market by Lbi. Strong is also currently co-writing Ultra with Tony Kushner for Steven Spielberg, based on the Rachel Maddow podcast, Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra.
Strong’s resume includes pop culture successes like the Fox drama series Empire, which he co-created, served as exec producer and director of several episodes, but he is one of Hollywood’s stronger writers in hot button and political topics. He was the creator and showrunner of the Hulu series Dopesick, which starred Michael Keaton and focused on the Opioid scourge and the role of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma in spreading it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first premiered as a feature film in 1992, starring Kristy Swanson as the titular character, as well as Luke Perry, David Arquette, and Hilary Swank, based on disgraced creator Joss Whedon's script. The film was not a hit, but Whedon later turned it into a TV series that premiered in 1997 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and Anthony Head.
The series ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, adding the spinoff show Angel in 1999, which premiered at the same time as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3. The series was canceled after five seasons, and a reboot for Buffy has been in talks since 2018, although Sarah Michelle Gellar said several times she was reluctant to return. There are few female characters more iconic than Buffy Summers from the supernatural drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The teen show redefined concepts, not just for female characters but the supernatural format itself.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer concluded over two decades ago in 2003 after a seven-season run, but its impact has continued, with the story continuing via novels and the 2023 audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. However, a reboot was long in development, and it was recently confirmed it's happening, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to return as Buffy Summers. Now, the actress officially confirmed the news on Instagram, with an encouraging background story about working to make the reboot count.

Nerd movies, like geeks themselves, have come a long way over the last few decades. When films about nerds and geeks started becoming popular in the 1980s, they showed the characters as losers, misfits, and outsiders who had to face bullies, who were often the cool, popular kids. Since the 80s, the roles have stayed the same concerning their brains and status as misfits, but these characters have become more prestigious and important, as brains are more important than brawn in today's society.
When it comes to movies about nerds and geeks, they are no longer just about nerds being picked on by jocks and having to survive. They have become films about the smartest kids in the class doing things that no one ever imagined they could do. Geeks today are cool and often have more in common with regular people than the jocks that used to rule the class.

The Scooby Gang in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most beloved teams of heroes in any television series. While its roster fluctuates over the course of seven seasons, nearly every character who joins Buffy Summers in her crusade against evil is an absolute fan-favorite. The biggest exception to this, of course, is the series' infamous male lead, Xander Harris.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans hate Xander Harris, and there are plenty of characters who deserved to be in the Scooby Gang more. Some characters are more deserving because of greater likability and popularity, while others simply would have been more useful. While Xander is selfish, mean, cruel, misogynistic, and all-around useless, these characters would all have brought something special to the Scoobies.

Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.
Many of the best TV characters ever started off unpopular yet managed to redeem themselves throughout the series. In some cases, annoying TV characters managed to become fan favorites as viewers got to know and understand their backstories, motivations, and likable characteristics. Everyone can change their mind, and it appears that Sarah Michelle Gellar could have done just that when it comes to her opinion on a possible revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The incredibly popular fantasy horror series that debuted almost three decades ago in 1997 has been circling a reboot or revival for almost six years now, but the idea has never managed to gain a foothold. Additionally, Gellar has frequently dismissed the idea of being involved in such a reboot if it did happen, but that could have changed.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar addressed the idea of reviving Buffy, and now seems much more open to the idea. The change of heart appears to have partly been instigated by her latest role in Dexter: Original Sin. She explained to Barrymore:
“It's funny. I always used to say 'no', like, because, you know, it's in its bubble and so perfect.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is an acclaimed film with some serious talent attached to it. In addition to John Wick franchise mastermind Chad Stahelski in the director's seat, the film features a screenplay co-written by Michael Finch and Shay Hatten. While Hatten had also worked on John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Finch was a newcomer to the series with John Wick: Chapter 4. Still, he helped lead the duo to success, as John Wick: Chapter 4 received positive reviews. The film also did well at the box office, making over $440 million.
Prior to John Wick: Chapter 4, Finch had written screenplays for other action films, though his career had been fairly slow moving. His past work has included writing for American Assassin, Blood Brother, Interrogation, and Countdown. Likely aided by the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Finch's career has now taken off, as he is reported to be the screenwriter on over 10 upcoming projects.

Harry Houdini was a famous magician and escape artist from the early 1900s, known for his amazing stunts like escaping from handcuffs, locked containers, and underwater traps. Born in 1874 in Hungary, he moved to the U.S. as a child and became famous worldwide for his talent and showmanship.
In addition to magic, Houdini was a skeptic who exposed fake spiritualists and was also involved in aviation and filmmaking. Now, his inspiring story will be turned into a spy thriller film called Becoming Houdini, produced by Scott Sanders and Danny Strong.
The movie will follow the story of young Erik Weisz (Houdini’s real name) as he rises to fame, with a script written by Michael Finch and Alex Litvak, known for John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Three Musketeers.
Not much is known about the plot of Becoming Houdini yet, and no lead actor has been cast, according to Deadline.
In addition to magic, Houdini was a skeptic who exposed fake spiritualists and was also involved in aviation and filmmaking. Now, his inspiring story will be turned into a spy thriller film called Becoming Houdini, produced by Scott Sanders and Danny Strong.

Harry Houdini was a famous magician and escape artist from the early 1900s, known for his daring stunts like escaping from locked handcuffs, sealed containers, and even underwater traps. Born in 1874 in Hungary, he moved to the U.S. as a child and became a global sensation for his skill, showmanship, and charisma.
Beyond magic, he was also a skeptic who exposed fake spiritualists and a pioneer in aviation and filmmaking. His story was inspiring enough that the famous magician will apparently appear on the big screen in a spy thriller titled ‘Becoming Houdini’

(Updated with Special Prosecutor statement) Jussie Smollett’s 2021 conviction over his alleged fake assault on the streets of Chicago is now behind the Empire actor. However, the former U.S. Attorney appointed to the case insists this decision doesn’t mean Smollett is innocent of falsely reporting a Maga connected hate crime in early 2019.
In a somewhat surprising ruling, the Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday overturned the legal consequences Smollett suffered due to the high profile incident. In the court’s opinion, the Illinois Supreme Court found that special prosecutor’s Dan Webb’s decision to retry Smollett violated his rights.

On the night of the 2000 presidential election, as the counting began in a tight race between Texas Gov. George W. Bush and incumbent Vice President Al Gore, it all came down to Florida. And then, all hell broke loose.
Director Jay Roach and writer Danny Strong captured the stakes and the personalities that drove that strange moment in “Recount,” the Emmy-winning 2008 HBO movie starring Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, Bob Balaban and Laura Dern. Instead of “Stop the Steal,” the rally cry in 2000 for Bush supporters was “Stop the Recount.”
“The events in ‘Recount’ were in some way a rehearsal for January 6,” Roach says. “It proved that there was potential to physically disrupt an election.”

Toya Turner has frequently appeared in small roles in TV and movies over the years, but in the 2020s, she's begun to have more central parts in notable productions. Turner began her professional acting career in 2006, appearing in the short film Adia in the starring role. She went on to appear in smaller roles in lesser-known TV series, though she always gave memorable performances for whatever little screen time she was afforded. In 2024, Turner had a one-episode role in Chicago Fire, her first of many appearances in the Chicago universe.
Though she was getting roles throughout the 2010s in some more notable series than she had previously, Turner was still only appearing for either one-episode guest parts or small roles in a handful of feature films. It wasn't until 2020 that Turner earned her first starring role with her performance in the canceled too-soon TV series Warrior Nun as Shotgun Mary.

Lee Daniels clarified his statements about his hit show “Empire” being his “worst experience,” saying it was merely the first time he’d ever taken creative notes from a network and struggled with being told how to represent the Black community.
“That’s so not true,” Daniels said of previous reports of him dissing his experience with Fox in conversation with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” while promoting his new Netflix film “The Deliverance.” “What I meant was the worst because all of my films have been independently financed. It was the first time I was taking notes from anybody … no one gave me notes to do anything.”
While “The Deliverance” director said it’s “normal” for studios to submit notes to a showrunner or TV creator, but said it was still a “jarring” collaboration. He called his stint with Fox a “great” one, though he added...

At the start of its run in 2015, Empire was a rare network TV hit during a time when network TV was beginning to take a major backseat to cable and streaming. The series quickly became a pop-culture phenomenon and, at least during its first season, consistently improved viewership from one week to the next. Anyone would be thankful to have a hit of this stature, but co-creator Lee Daniels has revealed that, while the show did make him a lot of money, aspects of its success made it "absolutely the worst experience" for a creator used to calling all the shots.
During an interview with The Film Stage to promote his Netflix horror film The Deliverance, Daniels spoke about the Empire phenomenon, explaining that he got into television because he wanted to challenge himself on a creative level. Lee Daniels speaks poorly of his experience working on Empire. Empire was a drama show that ran across six seasons from 2015 to 2020, telling the story of a hip-hop mogul who has to choose between his three sons when he has to make one the successor of his multi-million dollar company. Daniels co-created the show alongside Danny Strong. Daniels is also known for his work on films such as Precious, The Butler, and The Deliverance.
Speaking with The Film Stage, Daniels reflects on his time working on Empire. According to the co-creator, his time working on Empire was "absolutely the worst experience." Daniels went on to explain that he had mostly worked in the independent sector up until his time on Empire, but wanted to see what working on a major network show was like. Lee Daniels’ TV series Empire ran for six seasons on Fox, but the director has confirmed that the behind-the-scenes process wasn’t his favorite. In a new interview with The Film Stage, Daniels confirmed he “only did Empire just so I could see what that experience was like.”
As it turned out, it wasn’t great, with Daniels describing the making of Empire as “horrible.” He added, “Absolutely the worst experience. Horrible! But guess what? Fucking that money, money, money! I was able to put my kids through college and shit.

Lee Daniels’ first-ever horror effort, “The Deliverance,” is not to be confused with 1972’s “Deliverance.” Although, much like John Boorman’s three-time Oscar nominee about idiot canoers going through hell in rural Georgia, it does make movie-watching pretty painful.
Not since “Hillbilly Elegy” has Netflix done Glenn Close so dirty. That’s true even taking into account her small part in the hugely horrible “Heart of Stone” for the streamer last year. “The Deliverance” director Daniels, an ambitious storyteller with an admirably spotty track record, is best known for creating the TV show “Empire” with Danny Strong and, before that, helming the Sundance darling “Precious,”.
Back in 2009, Daniels’ talents as a producer on 2001’s “Monster’s Ball” preceded the success of his eventual Best Picture contender, “Precious,” but the bleak family drama about a Black family living in Harlem is what turned him into a celebrated director. His gritty portrait of...

The Directors Guild of America is moving forward with plans to establish a diversity committee for its Jewish members.
At its most recent meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 11 (held the day after the 2024 DGA Awards), the national board approved the formation of a provisional Jewish committee, which all guild subgroups pass through before receiving official standing. The most recent diversity groups to gain permanent status are the disability committee, which was created as a provisional committee last May before being officially adopted at the Feb. 11 board meeting, and the LGBTQ+ committee, which was voted in as a provisional group in June 2021 before earning its permanent designation in January 2022.

“Empire” star Terrence Howard is suing CAA for breach of fiduciary duty, saying the talent agency allegedly asked him to take a lower salary for the popular show. He outlined his claims at a Friday press conference.
Howard played music mogul Lucious Lyon for six seasons of the Fox drama, produced by Imagine Entertainment and what was then 20th Century Fox TV. CAA also represented the producers of “Empire” in a package deal that was lucrative for the agency, he says. As such, Howard’s legal strategy asserts, the agency did not act in his best interest by pushing for a higher salary because it had a profit participation stake through its package, so CAA had an interest in maximizing the total profit that 20th TV realized on the series. Since 2020, the practice of talent agencies receiving packaging fees on TV series was essentially banned after the Writers Guild of...

Terrence Howard sued his former talent agency CAA for breach of fiduciary duty and fraud on Friday, alleging the company urged him to take a “lowball” salary for his role on the hit TV show Empire due to a conflict of interest.
The actor, who portrayed hip-hop music mogul Lucious Lyon on six seasons of the celebrated Fox drama, claims CAA failed to act in his best interest because it also represented Empire’s co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong along with the show’s production companies in a package deal.

‘It’s time for change,” former Empire star Terrence Howard said today announcing he is suing CAA over allegedly screwing him financially over the hip hop soap’s blockbuster six season run. “We need accountability. We need access. We need to be able to share in the profits.”
In a press conference Friday at the office of The Cochran Firm, Howard accused his former agency of engaging in a lucrative packaging deal with the show’s creators and producers Imagine. Consequently, according to Howard and his legal team, the actor was bilked of “a much higher salary given the success of the show.”
“I trusted CAA to look after me, and they looked after themselves.”
At its height, the Taraij P. Henson co-starrer series hauled in around $100 million in advertising for Fox, this new lawsuit claims. Money that Howard thinks he helped generate in his on-screen role as ruthless hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon.

Terrence Howard is suing CAA for an alleged conflict of interest in the agency’s dealings over his compensation on Empire.
In the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, Howard alleges his agents who packaged the deal with Fox prioritized the interests of themselves and the show’s producers, which it also represented, by inducing him to take below-market salaries over his six-season run starring in the series. CAA declined to comment.
“I trusted CAA to look after me, and they looked after themselves,” Howard said.
James Bryant, a lawyer representing Howard, takes issue with packaging fees, in which agents are paid directly by a studio for attaching actors or a director to a writer’s pitch. “Over the last several years, agencies have become much more powerful and found a much more lucrative way of making money,” he said. “It’s by being the packaging agent,...
