Roger Ross Williams’ One Story Up & ‘White Nanny, Black Child’ Producer DocHearts Team For Fela Kuti Doc Series
Image
Exclusive: Prolific doc makers from both sides of the Atlantic are teaming up for a doc series on Afrobeats icon Fela Kuti.

Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams and his One Story Up banner has teamed with BAFTA-winning UK producer Andy Mundy-Castle’s DocHearts to create the program, which we understand is likely to be a four-part limited series on the African music pioneer.

Access has been secured to those close to the late Nigerian star, whose funeral in 1997 attracted hundreds of thousands of people. His focus on meshing West African music with funk and jazz, along with his ultra-charismatic performances, made him one of the 20th Century’s most important musicians, influencing the likes of Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jay-Z and Kanye West.

“We’re embarking on a landmark project to tell the definitive story of a radical African icon whose fearless fusion of music and politics shook the...

Will Trent Built an Unkillable Cast — Why Amanda & Ormewood Have to Survive
Image
Nowadays, so many TV casts lose actors every few seasons, which means the relationship dynamics and strong character arcs suffer. Viewers don’t always have time to become invested in characters.

ABC’s Will Trent has differed because they’ve had the same cast and characters since the series began, and the cast works so well together that they often feel like a family on-screen and off-screen.

While other actors have joined the cast in recurring roles, the series thrived because the focus remained on the core five characters.

(Wilford Harewood/ Disney)

Over the past three seasons, we’ve come to care about Will, Angie, Faith, Ormewood, and Amanda. We’re invested in their journeys, and we’ll riot if anything happens to either Amanda or Ormewood.

They are vital to the show’s fabric.

Sabrina Carpenter Announces New Album ‘Man’s Best Friend’
Image
It’s officially the Summer of Sabrina (again). One week after returning with “Manchild,” Sabrina Carpenter has announced the new album Man’s Best Friend, out Aug. 29 via Island Records.

Carpenter teased the album this morning in an Instagram Live video, rifling through a stack of records by Donna Summer, Abba, and Dolly Parton, before she landed on her own. She put Man’s Best Friend on the turntable, the camera pausing on the spicy cover.

Man’s Best Friend marks Carpenter’s seventh studio album, following 2024’s Short n’ Sweet (its deluxe edition,...

Miley Cyrus ‘Something Beautiful’ Review: A Rapturous Prog-Pop Fantasia
Image
For more than a decade, Miley Cyrus has swung deliberately back and forth between maximalism and a relatively simple pop formula. For every Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz in her discography there’s a Bangerz. For every “Mother’s Daughter,” there’s a “Malibu.” And like clockwork, Cyrus’s ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, finds the singer squarely in the former mode, following up the more straightforward pop of 2023’s Endless Summer Vacation with a post-apocalyptic prog-pop visual album.

Unlike that of its predecessor, the music on Something Beautiful oozes as much personality as the singer herself. Following a psychedelic prelude in which Cyrus outlines her creative ethos—“The beauty one finds alone is a prayer that longs to be shared,” she says—the title track, an intermittently explosive prog-rock torch song, serves as a Big Bang of sorts, as Cyrus’s desire is expressed in short, ecstatic bursts of brass and electric guitar.

Danny DeVito Improv-ed One of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Funniest Moments, Rob McElhenney Says
Image
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creators Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton possess the kind of prodigious talent that extends well beyond the small screen. Case in point: They too, can produce groovy disco tracks capable of keeping an entire club — or more importantly, Danny DeVito’s Frank Reynolds — dancing all night long.

In the series’ early days, the trio briefly shifted their influences from the Marx Brothers to Donna Summer, penning an original disco song for Season Two’s “Mac Bangs Dennis’ Mom,” an instant Sunny classic inspired by none other than DeVito’s improv skills.

“We’re on set that day, in the scene where Frank and Mac go to the discotheque to meet some ladies,” McElhenney explained during an episode of The Always Sunny Podcast. In the script, Frank had a “very specific move that he’s dancing to,” but DeVito decided to find a groove all to his own,...

‘The Masked Singer’: Paparazzo Definitely Thinks a Certain ‘Boy Meets World’ Scene Helped Him
Image
Spoilers ahead for “The Masked Singer” and Paparazzo’s identity

Matthew Lawrence has never really been known to sing or dance in his work, but if you were a fan of “Boy Meets World,” you might remember an episode where he definitely did a major choreographed performance. And according to the actor, it might’ve helped him on “The Masked Singer.”

Indeed, Lawrence was eliminated from the Fox singing competition on Wednesday night, and revealed to be the voice under the Paparazzo mask. It makes him the second Lawrence brother to compete on the show, after his brother Joey Lawrence was revealed as Walrus back in season 8.

Looking back on his career, Matthew Lawrence concedes that there have never been many songs or dances for him — intentionally so. But, when asked if performing a dance to Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” with the men of “Boy Meets World” back in...

‘The Voice’: Kelsea Ballerini Makes Confession About Boyfriend Chase Stokes During Knockouts
Image
The Voice coach Kelsea Ballerini couldn’t help thinking about her boyfriend Chase Stokes during the show’s latest round of Knockouts, joking that she wanted to “go home and make out” with him. Ballerini’s comments came after a spellbinding performance from Team John Legend‘s Olivia Kuper Harris, who was paired up against fellow Team Legend member Jacquelyn George. For her performance, Kuper Harris sang Donna Summer’s “Last Dance,” which had Ballerini feeling a certain way. “Olivia, that first part made me want to go home and make out with my boyfriend,” she quipped, referencing the Outer Banks actor. “It was so strong and sexy, and then you got up and showed a playful side. As Adam [Levine] would say in very caveman terms, ‘Big time wow.’” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kelsea Ballerini (@kelseaballerini) Ballerini and Stokes confirmed their relationship in February 2023. ‘The Voice’ Season 27 Episode 11 recap: Kelsea steals an artist from Adam because she ‘wouldn’t do good in jail’
Image
The Voice Season 27 continued the third stage of the competition on Monday with the third installment of "Knockouts" performances. In this round, each coach will set four head-to-head matchups from their team and will be forced to choose only four winners. While they won't be able to save any of the losers from their own team, each coach will have a Steal to bring a loser from another team with them to "The Playoffs." By the end of the round's 16 performances, 20 artists will remain in the competition.

One hallmark of this round is that the artists get to choose their own song to perform rather than have it selected by their coach, as was done in the "Battles." Another is that without guest mentors assisting during rehearsals, it's the first time that John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine get to work one-on-one with the artists on their team.

The Voice’s Last Season 27 Knockouts Leave Us Going Yodelayheehoo No!

As The Voice brought its Season 27 Knockouts to a close Monday evening, five more contestants were issued mic-drop moments — as in “Drop the mic and go.” Losing one would-be winner in particular really bummed me out, too, especially after the performance that she’d just given. Don Mischer, Director and Producer of Television’s Biggest Live Events, Dies at 85
Image
Don Mischer, the Emmy-accumulating director-producer who called the shots on the biggest live entertainment events in the world, from Super Bowl halftime shows and Olympic opening ceremonies to the Oscars and the Emmys, has died. He was 85.

Mischer died peacefully in his sleep in Los Angeles on Friday, a family spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

The San Antonio native also helmed the Kennedy Center Honors, starting with the inaugural 1978 event through 1986 — he then produced the CBS telecast from 1993-2001 — and guided Barbara Walters‘ highly-rated ABC interview shows beginning in the late 1970s.

Meanwhile, Mischer was the architect of dozens of landmark TV specials, including 1983’s Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, which featured a reunion of The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson’s “moonwalk” during a “Billie Jean” performance, and 1990’s The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson and 1998’s Sonny & Me: Cher Remembers, both of which aired mere months after the shocking deaths...

Will Trent Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Rescuing Will Before The Deadly Secrets Killed Him
Image
While many cults have blurred the line between religious sanctuary and controlling, Olas Collective almost relished in creating killers and soldiers for Rain’s bidding.

Parts of Will Trent Season 3 Episode 13 were predictable, while others, like Will’s reactions to being drugged and high, were a surprised delight.

I wish Will didn’t have such a savior complex, but I’m relieved that he remembered how valued and important he was to the team and his friends.

(Daniel Delgado Jr./ Disney)

Let’s dive into the baptismal water and discuss how Will and the team learned the deadly secrets of this cult.

Olas Collective Seemed United, But Their Unity Was Frightening

Initially, Olas Collective seemed unifying as Rain baptized and welcomed Will, clarifying the importance of discerning between guilt and shame.

‘The greatest performance I have ever seen’: ‘American Idol’ showstoppers round sends 4 contestants straight into the Top 24
Image
Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.

There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

Sarah Snook Goes Fantastically Wilde In ‘The Picture Of Dorian Gray’ – Broadway Review
Image
The Picture of Dorian Gray

Opening night: March 27, 2025

Venue: Broadway’s Music Box Theatre

Written by: Oscar Wilde

Adapted and Directed by: Kip Williams

Performer: Sarah Snook

Camera Operators: clew, Luka Kain, Natalie Rich, Benjamin Sheen, Dara Woo

Running time: 2 hrs (no intermission)

Deadline’s takeaway: If only Oscar Wilde were alive to offer up a pithy description of Broadway’s playful The Picture of Dorian Gray starring the remarkable Succession actor Sarah Snook, because this is a production that most of us will need more than a few words to convey all of its exuberant theatrical dazzle.

Equal parts acting masterclass, tech wizardry, illusion and clockwork stage management, all costumed and set designed with the wit and color schemes of the most vivid Cindy Sherman photographs, Dorian Gray marks audacious Broadway debuts by both Snook and director-adaptor Kip Williams.

So what if the use of video cameras on stage is already bordering on cliché,...

Ever since Kanye West went on an abhorrent antisemitic tirade in fall 2022 — which cost him his billionaire status and lucrative partnerships with Adidas and Gap — the Grammy winner has been fighting off an ever-growing list of lawsuits.

The 47-year-old, who changed his name to Ye, has been sued more than two dozen times by former Yeezy employees, teachers at his failed Donda Academy, musicians claiming sampling disputes and two models who alleged he sexually assaulted them.

Some suits — including from Donna Summer’s estate and his former manager — have been quickly and quietly settled.

Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer Rap ‘Not Like Us’ as the Culps for SNL50 Concert | Video
Image
Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer reprised their iconic roles as Marty and Bobbi Mohan-Culp during the “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” Friday.

The old married music teachers even sung Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” Gasteyer’s Bobbi chimed out the backing vocals in an opertatic tune, as Ferrell’s Marty rapped the verse. Both comedians went back and forth singing “A minor” trying to find the key, as SNL alum Leslie Jones filmed from the crowd.

Ariana DeBose Won’t Star in ‘Evita’ in London ‘Due to Scheduling’ (Exclusive)
Image
Ariana DeBose won’t be crying for Argentina.

The Oscar winner was in talks to star in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of “Evita” at the London Palladium, but sources tell me things didn’t work out “due to scheduling.” The musical is scheduled to run June 16 to Sept. 6.

DeBose is currently shooting “Scarpetta,” the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“We’re 70% there,” DeBose told Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye in January about her possible “Evita” deal.

“Evita,” from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of Argentine political powerhouse Eva Perón. Elaine Paige played the title role in the original 1978 West End production in London. Patti LuPone originated the role on Broadway in 1979. Madonna starred in the 1996 film adaptation.

My sources insist that DeBose is interested in returning to Broadway “when the time is right.

Nightlife Impresario Bryan Rabin Is Bringing Back Giorgio’s and a Bit of Disco Decadence to New Year’s Eve in L.A.
Image
In the fall of 1990, inside a fully functional second floor magic shop located above a methadone clinic on Hollywood Boulevard, Bryan Rabin made his first splash on the Los Angeles nightlife scene (alongside his partner, the late actor Jimmy Medina) with a traveling, if extralegal, after hours club called The Lounge. “It was the Wild West. We’d just drive around at night and look for spots. I was 20 years old, full of moxie, and we’d just tell people we wanted to throw a bar mitzvah in their space,” recalls Rabin, noting the club migrated from photography and film studios to empty lofts and attracted everyone from Billy Idol to Thierry Mugler and Wolfgang Puck to dance there. “We moved every week to keep away from the police and had to call or fax everyone the day of each party.”

From there, he opened Prague in a Czechoslovakian meeting hall on Western Avenue,...

Barbra Streisand Remembers Producer Richard Perry and His ‘Uncanny Ability to Pick the Hits’
Image
Barbra Streisand celebrated Richard Perry’s “uncanny ability to pick the hits” in a tribute to the late producer, who died this week at the age of 82.

Streisand worked with Perry on two albums, Stoney End and Barbra Joan Streisand, both of which came out in 1971. As Streisand noted in her tribute, it was Perry who “encouraged [her] to record contemporary songs” after building her career largely on standards. And the two records they made contained several successful singles, none more so than Streisand’s version of the Laura Nyro-penned “Stoney End,...

Richard Perry Dies: Music Producer Behind Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’ & Other Hits Was 82
Image
Richard Perry, a music producer behind hits like Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” has died. He was 82.

The record producer died on Tuesday in Los Angeles after suffering cardiac arrest.

Daphna Kastner, a friend of Perry, told AP she referred to him as a “father friend, adding, “He maximized his time here. He was generous, fun, sweet and made the world a better place. The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.”

Perry made a big name in the 1970s, producing for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Art Garfunkel, Carly Simon, and Ringo Starr. In the late 1970s, he started his own Planet Records label and signed acts like The Cretones, Pointer Sisters, and Billy Thermal, among many others. He sold the label to RCA Records in 1983.

The Sylvester Stallone disaster movie, Daylight, gets a new 4K Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber
Image
The 1996 disaster movie, Daylight, will soon be coming to your home in crisp ultra high-definition picture. Blu-ray.com has recently reported that the Sylvester Stallone film from Rob Cohen, who directed Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and The Fast and the Furious, will be getting a new 4K remastered physical media release from the Kino Lorber distributor. In addition to Stallone, the movie co-starred Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya, and Jay O. Sanders. This new ultra-hd version is expected to hit retailers next year on March 11.

Daylight is not particularly well regarded by Stallone fans, and it had the misfortune of coming out just as disaster movies were bombing left and right. It grossed an abysmal $33 million domestically, which seriously hurt Sly’s career, even though it did well enough overseas that it likely broke even by the time it hit home video. It was meant to be the...

Admittedly, I knew nothing about Waack dancing before the stellar Sooni Taraporewala’s engrossing series on Amazon. The nine episodes, crisply edited with reams of ravishing repartees , simply jump at us with their verve and vivacity.

Although Ms Taraporewala follows the underdog’s movie manuel to a T, there is something immensely dewy and inviting as the young ladies, all incipient maestros on the dance floor, combine their passion for dance with a gritty survival instinct.

And the majestic crumbling relics of Kolkata! Ooof! The City Of Dreams has never looked dreamier. Cinematographer Igor Kropotov stalks the streets and crumbling havelis of Kolkata with the reverent eagerness of a tourist who has decided to stay back. This is Kolkata like never before.

The series opens with the camera cruising curiously through a crumbling haveli as we hear the sounds of Donna Summer’s stupendous track ‘MacArthur Park’ in the distance:...

Kanye West Ghosted ‘Fuk Sumn’ Sample Negotiations — Now He’s Being Sued, Again
Image
Kanye West hasn’t managed to keep his lawyers around for long enough to clear a number of samples included on Vultures 1, the collaborative album he released with Ty Dolla $ign in February. But the more time he spends cycling through different legal representatives, the more he needs them. The rapper has just been hit with another copyright infringement lawsuit related to the album, this time for the song “Fuk Sumn.”

According to Billboard, representatives for the Memphis rappers behind “Drink a Yak (Part 2),” released in 1994, claim that the Vultures...

Stevie Wonder Pays Tribute to Quincy Jones: ‘I Love You Madly’
Image
You can hear the influence of Quincy Jones, who died Sunday, in practically every genre of music. In the music of Stevie Wonder — who grew up listening to Jones’ own records and work with Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and others — Jones’ influence lives strongest in the way Wonder arranges his music and in the verve of his singing.

Jones and Wonder worked together several times, including productions for Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, and USA for Africa, but Wonder still marvels at the times Jones recorded his songs — including “You’ve Got It Bad,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Archie Bunker's Place
Image
Even if you've never seen "All in the Family," there's a high probability that you're at least somewhat familiar with the character of Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), his well-meaning albeit shrill wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), and his constant conflict as a conservative patriarch against a progressively evolving world. If that sounds like the set-up for every family sitcom ever made, it's because, well, it is. "All in the Family" is one of the most influential TV shows in history, and that's not even factoring in the web of spin-offs it inspired like "The Jeffersons," "Maude," "Gloria, "704 Hauser,' "Good Times," and "Archie Bunker's Place."

The latter was a direct continuation of "All in the Family," set primarily in the neighborhood tavern purchased by Archie in the eighth season of the flagship sitcom. "Archie Bunker's Place" starts when he takes in a Jewish business partner named Murray Klein after co-owner...

A Walk Through ‘MacArthur Park’: Jimmy Webb Tells the History of an Odd Pop Classic That Found New Life as the Musical Climax of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’
Image
Here’s one cake that didn’t get left out too long in the rain: the eternal pop pastry that is “MacArthur Park.” The song’s epic length and unusual structure haven’t kept it from turning into a decades-spanning perennial, one that is just finding yet another new life as a result of its extensive use in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which scores a full-on movie-musical climax with actor-singer Richard Harris’ original 1968 version before switching to Donna Summer’s disco remake for the end credits.

Jimmy Webb is one of the indisputably greatest songwriters of all time, known for undying classics like “Wichita Lineman,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Galveston” and “Highwayman.” “MacArthur Park” is undoubtedly a more polarizing song than those others, but more music fans than not will break into a grin upon hearing the start of a seven-minute, suite-like epic that likens a failed romance to...

Disco Mickey? A look at one of the weirdest (and most fun) Disney albums ever
Image
Disney is known for picking up on trends in music. But did you know they once had an entire album dedicated to the disco craze?

The rise and fall of disco in the 1970s remains one of the stranger tales in all of music history. For a time, this was the dominant music trend, maybe a reaction to the counterculture of the 1960s. Somehow, this mix of different genres with synthesizers, electric pianos, and quirky beats connected with folks of the time.

Disco clubs were soon filling cities around the United States with those infamously crazy fashions of bell-bottom pants, open-vest shirts, and more. It reached its height in 1977 with Saturday Night Fever and John Travolta’s character became the epitome of what every clubgoer wanted to be.

The list of stars connected to the genre was plentiful: Abba, The Village People, the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, the Jacksons, Diana Ross,...

John Early Is Looking for That Special Sound
Image
It’s a sunny afternoon at the end of August in a crowded Echo Park cafe, and John Early is telling me, unprompted, about his pulled groin.

I have to admire this spontaneous confession from the mischievous blond actor and comedian, given our lack of privacy. This is of a piece with Early’s standup act, which can feel like gossip about information that’s supposed to be confidential, or that we’d rather not acknowledge. Take his warning that if you let your boyfriend go to therapy, “they are...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Writers Break Down Those Two Spectacular Needle Drops
Image
[This story includes spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.]

Clocking in at just under two minutes, the involuntary calypso dance sequence in the original Beetlejuice, during which Catherine O’Hara’s Delia Deetz leads her dinner guests in a lip sync of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-o,” is arguably the most famous scene from the 1988 film. An homage in the sequel was always a given.

But, for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton wanted to go even harder. The film’s climax includes another dance number — this one set to all seven minutes and 21 seconds of Richard Harris’ bonkers and much covered “MacArthur Park.” (Donna Summer’s disco-fied version spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1978.) It isn’t just another needle drop. It practically drives the narrative of the entire third act.

Screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, no strangers to the Burton-verse with their massive hit Netflix series Wednesday, spoke with...

How Tim Burton Chose That Song For Beetlejuice 2's Batty Climax
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

Ever since the first "Beetlejuice" escalated the obsession the ghostly Maitland couple had with Harry Belafonte to them trying to rid their home of the obnoxious Deetz family by making them do a possession lip sync dance number to "Banana Boat (Day-o)," it seemed like a given that a follow-up setpiece had to happen if "Beetlejuice" ever got a sequel. Of course, follow-ups to gags can be tricky, especially in comedy sequels. Some try to go bigger and wilder, such as the climactic news team battle in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Others try and undercut or subvert the expectation, like when Phoebe Cates' Kate starts delivering a monologue about some trauma that happened to her on Lincoln's birthday and is cut off in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." Others still merely pick up where the bit left off in the first film,...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Soundtrack: From ‘Day-o’ to ‘Margaritaville’
Image
Plenty of bananas and a gruesomely gorgeous wedding cake get praise in musical moments in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Several 80s artists like Donna Summer, Jimmy Buffet and The Bee Gees have songs featured in the film, which is a followup to the 1988 original starring Michael Keaton as the ghost with the most, Winona Ryder as goth girl Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia’s stepmother Delia Deetz.

Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega joins the sequel in addition to other newcomers, and she has another fun dance moment set to one of the songs in the film’s soundtrack below. A choir sings a beautiful rendition of “Day-o” which can be heard in the film’s trailer. Of course, there wouldn’t be a musical dance moment — or more — without some possessed bodies and souls. The Afterlife provides ample opportunity to feature more genre songs from the 80s, as...

How ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar Brought the Franchise Back to Life
Image
The path to finally getting a “Beetlejuice” sequel off the ground started on the set of the Netflix series “Wednesday.”

“Wednesday” creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar would meet with Tim Burton, the show’s executive producer and the director of the first half of the season, every morning during production. They would go over the scenes that were supposed to be shot that day, just to talk them through. But then they got a text one day from Burton. He wanted to meet them after the shooting day had wrapped.

“We thought something was wrong,” Gough admitted in an interview with TheWrap.

But something wasn’t wrong. Instead, Burton wanted to talk to them about something – a sequel to his 1988 hit “Beetlejuice.”

“He basically said, ‘Beetlejuice is the movie that everybody asks for a sequel to,’” Gough said. Burton, at the time, had been talking to original...

Movie Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Image
Following his return as Batman in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash (2023), Michael Keaton again revisits another iconic character in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a prospect apparently strong enough to lure director Tim Burton out of retirement to helm the project. Unfortunately, the result is slightly better than a rehash of the first film, but has nowhere near the original’s charm or appeal.

The film begins by re-introducing the audience to Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) who has been using her ability to commune with the dead as a means to earn an income. However, when a family tragedy occurs, the family must reconvene at the long abandoned home in Winter River to sort through the remnants of their lives. There, Lydia’s estranged daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), learns the truth of her mother’s story and the demon named Beetlejuice.

After last working together on Batman Returns (1992), director Tim Burton (who ostensibly...

How Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ Changed Pop Music Forever
Image
When Donna Summer was recording her album I Remember Yesterday, she wanted each song to evoke a different decade. “I Feel Love” was meant to represent the future of music, and as time has gone on, that idea has become a prophecy.

Co-produced by Giorgio Moroder and Peter Bellotte, “I Feel Love” is a hypnotic, ethereal piece of synth music. Based around the Moog synthesizer, the only part of the song not played by a machine is the kick drum. Above that iconic loop, Summer gives a dreamy vocal performance...

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Review: Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton Help Tim Burton Rediscover the Ghoulish Mischief of His Glory Days
Image
There’s an inventive sequence early in the unexpectedly delightful Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in which the Bee Gees’ “Tragedy” accompanies Monica Bellucci’s soul-sucking demoness as her hacked up body parts are shaken loose from crates in the afterlife’s lost-and-found warehouse, where she proceeds to stitch herself back together like a gorgeous DIY Frankenstein monster. That scene multitasks as a show of kinship with the same actor’s role as a vampire bride in Bram Stoker’s Dracula; a tribute from Tim Burton to a key Gothic literature inspiration; and a darkly delicious valentine to the director’s offscreen partner of the past two years.

One of many inspired set-pieces in a clever sequel laced with hilarious callbacks to the 1988 original and amusingly eclectic pop-culture references to everything from Carrie to Mario Bava, from Soul Train to Donna Summer, it’s not the only time during the movie that I scrawled,...

The Best British Comedy of All Time Was Initially Rejected by Miramax
Image
The Full Monty initially struggled to secure production due to similarities to another film, eventually finding success with Fox Searchlight. The cast adamantly decided to only do one take for the striptease scene. The follow-up series aired last year.

Just a few beats into Tom Jones' "You Can Leave Your Hat on" or Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff," and plenty of people will be replaying a couple of iconic scenes from the British hit The Full Monty. The movie depicts a group of men from Sheffield who find themselves unemployed after the steel mill they work for closes down. Gaz has to find money to enable him joint custody of his son, while other ex-employees have their own issues to contend with. In a bid to get him and his friends some cash, he floats the idea of doing a striptease to a live audience, inspired by the famous dance striptease troupe,...

Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Vultures 2’: It’s Time to Unsubscribe From the Kanye Disaster
Image
In February, Ye (the former Kanye West) shocked the music industry when Vultures I, the first of a planned trilogy with Ty Dolla $ign as Y$, opened at Number One on the Billboard 200 chart. It was only a year ago when Ye’s rank antisemitism and adoration of white supremacists prompted an exodus of corporate supporters. Then, with Vultures I, he joined a wave of “canceled” men reestablishing ties with polite society. Critics stung by his unrelenting anti-Black stunts grudgingly admitted that Vultures was impressively produced. “Kids love Kanye,” declared...
